Mary Lynn Rajskub and Jay Ryan have boarded the Netflix, CBC and Aptn comedy North of North, which has started production in Nunavut in northern Canada.
Rajskub played Chloe O’Brian on the long-running 24 drama and also starred in the comedy Night School with Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish and Mayfield Games with Mira Sorvino. Ryan is a veteran of New Zealand soaps and series like Mary Kills People and Beauty and the Beast.
Other new cast members for North of North include Maika Harper, Braeden Clarke, Kelly William, Zorga Qaunaq, Doreen Simmonds and Tanya Tagaq. They join the previously-announced lead Anna Lambe, who plays young Inuk mother Siaja, with Keira Cooper, a 7 year-old actress from Iqaluit, Nunavut, playing her daughter Bun.
Siaja wants to build a new future for herself, not easily done in her small Arctic town where everyone knows your business, according to a synopsis for North of North from the producers.

November comes with many things; crisp days of dwindling daylight, falling leaves and dropping temperatures. It comes with bustling grocery stores, hours prepping Thanksgiving dinners, unbuttoned trousers and Black Friday sales. But November also comes with complicated feelings for many Indigenous artists.
Native American Heritage Month can oftentimes feel like the only time of year when people are interested in hearing Indigenous stories; the one moment where our voices are collectively uplifted, only to be cast aside again Dec. 1. But to limit the celebration and wealth of our languages, cultures, and history of our communities to a mere 30 days is a disservice to us all.
These ten projects from artists across Turtle Island, spanning multiple mediums, each invoke a sense of pride, resilience and love, and mark some of my favourite pieces of art — Native or not.
As November blows by, I encourage readers to spend the rest of it curling up with these 10 hilarious,...

The Toronto Intl. Film Festival’s Docs program gets underway Sept. 8 and will feature 22 nonfiction films — a hefty 57 increase from last year’s lineup, which was cut back to 14 due to Covid.
Notable titles include Oscar winner Laura Poitras’ “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,” which is pictured above and making its Canadian premiere following a world premiere at the Venice Film Festival; “Blackfish” director Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s latest docu “The Grab” and veteran filmmaker’s Werner Herzog’s “Theatre of Thought.”
Sacha Jenkins’s “Armstrong’s Black & Blues” will serve as TIFF Docs’ opening film.
Thom Powers, lead TIFF documentary programmer, winnowed the list of 22 from 700 submissions. While constructing this year’s program, Powers noticed various themes emerge across submissions, one being being the act of resistance.

FrancofoniaIt seems slightly off-kilter to term a film by Alexander Sokurov, everyone’s favorite Slavophile modernist, a “mash-up.” Yet Francofonia, which opened the Museum of the Moving Image’s fifth annual First Look festival, brings to mind an idiosyncratic synthesis of motifs derived from Godard’s Histoire(s) du cinéma and Volker Schlöndorff’s Diplomacy. With more than a passing resemblance to the ever-popular fiction/non-fiction hybrid film, Sokurov’s rambling meditation on the aesthetic imperatives of authoritarianism was an appropriate choice to open a festival that specializes in experimental hybridism. New work by such disparate filmmakers as Dominic Gagnon, Léa Rinaldi, and Louis Skorecki traverses generic boundaries—even though, for seasoned festival audiences, this sort of genre-bending is now more of a routine occurrence than a transgressive event. First Look’s desire to showcase subversive hybridity was evident in Quebecois filmmaker Dominic Gagnon’s double bill—Pieces and Love...

A concert hall acquires magic slowly, as memories and music percolate into the walls. The process is fickle: Audiences and musicians revere certain shabby rooms, while other, more serviceable spaces remain generic receptacles. National Sawdust, a deluxe live-music pod floating inside an old brick box in Williamsburg, opened Thursday. Within minutes, it was already dispensing experiences of the kind that lodge in the mind: the vocalist Theo Bleckmann threading a Handel melody through buzzing clouds of electronic dissonance, Foday Musa Suso weaving a tapestry of kora patterns around Philip Glass’s piano, the Inuit singer Tanya Tagaq emanating walrus roars and eldritch howls. If that sounds like a lot of territory to cover in one night, consider it a preview of the range to come. The programming is thick with music, dizzyingly varied, directed not to one constituency but many.My first impressions of National Sawdust were dominated by Chris Thile.

In celebration of the Parks Canada centennial this stunning collaboration of Canada’s elite in filmmaking and music combine to create a visionary glimpse into the unique terrains of Canada’s national parks. Spanning our country, the diversity of landscape is showcased through the exquisite portrayal of time and memory and by the exceptional scores produced by the equally diverse roster of Canadian musicians. The film episodes serve as an ode to the terrains that give Canada it’s identity, and celebrate how as a country we can showcase our beauty and talents, but also make evident that with change of weather and life needs to be change of action and perception.
The films, chunked into episodes for each park, encapsulate a microcosm of sound, stopping the idea of filmmaking to allow the effortless landscapes to reveal themselves and accentuate the music of nature, whether it be silence, animal calls,...

Absolutely brilliant. It's the only way to describe Tungijuq, the Inuit fable captured on film by Montreal-based music video and commercial directors Felix And Paul in collaboration with Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq Gillis - best known for her collaborations with Bjork.
This is a visually stunning, completely unique piece of work, one that plays out entirely without dialog simply because it needs none. The images and sound are completely immersive all on their own. I can only hope that this immensely talented trio have plans for some sort of similarly themed feature because seven minutes of this just isn't enough.
Felix And Paul have made the entire short available online and you can watch a streaming version below or head over to their website to watch it in high definition.

The 2010 edition of the Worldwide Short Film Festival kicked off in fine style here in Toronto last night. As is the norm for the festival, now in its sixteenth year, the opening night program was devoted to major award winners from around the globe and these were all more than deserving of the accolades. Here's the breakdown:
The night began with Cordell Barker's animated gem Runaway. Though I'd seen this a bunch of times before, this was my first crack at it on the big screen where it belongs. Barker was present for the screening and the crowd was more than appreciative. Check the trailer for this one below.
Up next, Seeds of the Fall, another dark comic gem from Sweden's Patrik Eklund. Eklund is a great favorite of ours here at Twitch - his wry comic timing is truly spectacular - and actually has a pair of films in the festival this year.
