Robert De Niro took the stage at the Kennedy Center on Sunday and, looking out at the balcony box where honoree Billy Crystal was sitting, told him of his career, “I had no idea you had done so much. And you’ve done it all in such a relatively short amount of time. You’re only 75. That means you’re just about six years away from being the perfect age to be elected president.”
The joke got some of the biggest audience cheers of the night — and a laugh from President Joe Biden, 81, embarking on a re-election campaign where his chronological advantage is, based on polls, top of mind to voters and the source of some doubts.
It was also one of a few references to age throughout Sunday evening’s Kennedy Center Honors which, in addition to Crystal, honored opera singer Renée Fleming, hip hop star and actress Queen Latifah,...

Sen. Elizabeth Warren is seeking an independent investigation into the Federal Reserve as well as the U.S. banking regulatory system while calling out Fed Chairman Jerome Powell for failing in his duties.
“I’m calling for an independent investigation of the Fed and the whole regulatory system here. The fed doesn’t just get to do its own investigation,” Warren told host Jonathan Karl on ABC’s This Week.
“I'm calling for an independent investigation of the Fed and the whole regulatory system here,” Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren tells @JonKarl after bank failures.

Employers added 263,000 jobs in September and the unemployment rate fell to 3.5, in line with expectations that job growth would slow during the month.
Still, the pace of hiring was slightly higher than predictions.
The biggest job gains were in leisure, hospitality and health care, according to figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
To tame inflation, the Federal Reserve has been trying to slow the economy by raising interest rates, moves that risk sending the U.S. into a recession.
Average hourly earnings in the private, nonfarm sector rose by 10 cents, or 0.3, to 32.36.
Employment in movies and recording industries rose slightly to 444,400, up 5,200 jobs from the previous month. Broadcasting jobs fell slightly, to 234,100, off by about 1,000 jobs. Performing arts and sports employment rose by 2,500 jobs, to 492,900.
Jason Furman, the Harvard professor who was chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers under President Barack Obama, said that the latest numbers were what “was mostly predicted.

Disney+’s WandaVision was kinder to Wanda Maximoff than most of Marvel Comics have been to the Scarlet Witch in recent decades.
“Despite Wanda Maximoff’s fifty-seven year history with Marvel, comics haven’t been exceptionally kind to the Scarlet Witch, which made WandaVision’s deep exploration of her grief a breath of fresh air. Created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee in 1964, Wanda made her first appearance in comics way back in X-Men #4.”

Two figures that have a propensity for showing up at disasters are being celebrated today.
President Donald Trump heads to flood-ravaged Houston for “Howdy, Modi,” a gathering at Nrg Stadium expected to draw 50,000 people. The event celebrates Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was first elected in 2014 and is credited with modernizing India’s economy and addressing climate change. But his military moves in the Kashmir region are controversial, and protesters are expected outside the stadium for him and President Trump.
The Commander-in-Tweet also found time this morning to give a shout-out to The Mothman, a West Virginia legend that purportedly shows up just before major disasters. They’re celebrating the creature today with a festival in that state.
President Trump’s tweetstorm also criticized the Federal Reserve for its interest rate policies, and again raised the Hunter Biden flag as he continues his counter-attack on the whistleblower rumors.
