Annette Bening enlists Jodie Foster’s help to accomplish a swimming goal she failed to achieve decades prior in the first trailer for Netflix’s fact-based film Nyad.
The biographical drama from directors Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin centers on marathon swimmer Diana Nyad (Bening) attempting to become the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without the aid of a shark cage. Foster plays the athlete’s coach and friend Bonnie Stoll in the movie that plays select theaters Oct. 20 and then hits the streaming platform Nov. 3 after debuting at the Telluride Film Festival earlier this month.
Nyad’s trailer shows Foster offering a dose of reality when she hears the swimmer’s plan. “That’s insane,” Foster says. “Diana, you tried that when you were 28, and you did not make it when you were 28. You’re 60.”
This leads Bening to reply, “I don’t believe in imposed limitations.

It looks like director Duncan Jones (Warcraft, Source Code, Moon) is finally moving forward on hit long-awaited passion project, Mute. He even got Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) and Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood) to star in the film. How cool is that!
Mute is an original film that was written by Jones and Mike Johnson, and here’s an official story summary that has been released:
Berlin. Forty years from today. A roiling city of immigrants, where East crashes against West in a science-fiction Casablanca. Leo Beiler (Skarsgard), a mute bartender has one reason and one reason only for living here, and she’s disappeared. But when Leo’s search takes him deeper into the city’s underbelly, an odd pair of American surgeons (led by Rudd) seem to be the only recurring clue, and Leo can’t tell if they can help, or who he should fear most.

We can still feel the heat generated from Craig Zobel’s Compliance. His sophomore film, which was made on a dime (his directorial debut Great World of Sound was made for a nickel and was also showcased at Sundance), got under the skin of select imbecile auds at its Park City premiere, but in the same token it intellectually tickled the critical masses. Adept in human discord in its purest form, this quality surely got infused on his third directing outing, Z for Zachariah, which is large scale humanity in crisis. You don’t often see Blacklist scripts (ranked #26th in 2009) break into Sundance, but in a Take Shelter scheme of things, this shot in New Zealand production benefitting from a plethora of producers on board could fit a sci-fi mold of Duncan Jones’ Moon. Despite the presence of A listers such as Chris Pine and Chiwetel Ejiofor, conceivably, big...

A decade ago, when the Afm forged in to replace Mifed in November, it was a bastion of B-movies with B-List stars hawking themselves in multiple films, and a slew of deals that often didn’t result in anything. Now, with studios only wanting to finance sequels and superhero movies, and requiring partners to fully fund or partly pay for everything else on their slates, indie companies have new currency and are dealing with some of the biggest films in the business, with everyone from Gary Ross (The Free State Of Jones) to Quentin Tarantino (The Hateful 8) in Santa Monica courting foreign buyers.
As it sheds the schlockfest stigma the Afm once bore, attendees are focused on the increased importance of offshore returns and a more disciplined approach to the business. There’s a lot of money in the market, but rigor is key while packaging has become tougher as...

After kicking ass and taking names earlier this year in John Wick, Keanu Reeves is set to return to a genre that helped define his career. According to Variety, the 50-year old veteran has agreed to star in Replicas, a sci-fi thriller coming to us from Lotus Entertainment and di Bonaventura Pictures.
It’s understood Reeves will play a neuroscientist in the flick, which is to be directed by Hysteria helmer, Tanya Wexler. Chad St. John is on screenplay duties, and the plot will center around a father who is hellbent on getting his family back after they are tragically killed in a car accident. And so, our neuroscientist throws caution to the wind and attempts to infiltrate a government laboratory in order to bend the physical laws of nature itself.
Put simply, Replicas asks one universal question: how far will a man go to save his family? In tandem with the casting news,...

Replicas, a joint project between Lotus Entertainment and di Bonaventura Pictures, was written by newcomer Chad St. John and will be directed by Tanya Wexler (Hysteria). Production is slated to begin next spring. From the press release: Lotus Entertainment's Bill Johnson and Jim Seibel said, "We loved the notion of taking the 'how far will a man go to save his family'...
