The Next Chapter is a continuation of Belgravia, named for and set in the affluent London district that became synonymous with the upper echelons of London society in the 19th century.
Belgravia: The Next Chapter picks up in 1871, three decades after the events depicted in the 2020 limited series, which was written by Fellowes and based on his novel of the same name. Developed and written by playwright and screenwriter Helen Edmundson, the series tells the love story of Frederick Trenchard (Wainwright), who has grown up as the third Lord Trenchard, and his new love interest, Clara Dunn (Slater), who is a newcomer to London society. Unaware that his birth was the product of an affair between his mother Susan and the scoundrel John Bellasis, a troubled childhood has left Frederick deeply insecure, which challenges his courtship of and marriage to Clara.
Slater’s Clara Trenchard (née Dunn) is a young, smart, and striking woman, and a fresh face amongst the society of Belgravia, Clara is thrilled by her marriage to the enigmatic Frederick … but as she comes to learn more of her husband and the trauma he carries, Clara finds her marriage will not be as smooth as she first thought and is something she must fight for.
Wainwright’s Frederick Trenchard, the young and handsome third Lord Trenchard, Frederick takes after his grandfather with a ferocious work ethic, having built a large business empire. Immediately smitten with Clara, he marries her after a whirlwind romance, but brings with him traumas from his past that threatens his newfound happiness.
Hannah Onslow, Sophie Thompson, Sophie Winkleman and Toby Regbo
Bluemel plays Dr. Stephen Ellerby. An idealistic, charming, and attractive young doctor, Stephen is brought into the society of Belgravia as he cares for Peter, son of the Duke of Rochester—a far cry from his life amongst the bohemians of Bloomsbury. He is quickly captivated by Clara after meeting her and starts to gain her trust as their lives interweave.
Regbo plays Rev. James Trenchard, Frederick’s estranged brother. A gentle, kind and religious man, James is haunted by both the separation from his brother and a private battle he is determined to keep hidden.
Onslow portrays Emily Dunn, Clara’s older sister. Emily responds to her sister’s swift marriage with a hint of jealousy as she is desperate to make her own match. But when she throws herself into charity work at her new church, she is instantly attracted to the Reverend James Trenchard.
Thompson plays Mrs. Dunn, Emily and Clara’s devoted mother. Mrs Dunn is a nervous, giddy, and chatty widow who has moved to Belgravia with her daughters and is thrilled by Clara’s new marriage and the security in social standing it brings.
Perron plays The Marquise D’Étagnac, a glamorous and highly unconventional French businesswoman, who is introduced to Belgravia by the Duke and Duchess of Rochester. Offering a wealth of business opportunities, Frederick sees a chance to expand into new areas of industry.
Winkleman portrays Duchess of Rochester. The queen of Belgravia, the Duchess and her husband stand at the top of Belgravia’s social hierarchy – but privately, she struggles to reconcile the Duke’s feelings towards their unwell, eldest son Peter with her own wishes for his care.
Cassidy plays Davison. Clara’s newly appointed lady’s maid, Davison grows to protect her mistress with a fierce devotion, recognizing Clara’s youth and need for love. Davison has experienced hard times in her own past and is intent on supporting Clara through her struggles.
Led by Neame, the series reunites Carnival’s award-winning creative team behind the original series. Neame and Marchant will serve as executive producers with Fellowes and Joanna Strevens. Helen Edmundson serves as showrunner and executive producer. The series will be directed by John Alexander, Paul Wilmshurst and Marisol Adler. Colin Wratten (Killing Eve) who produced the original series, will return as producer.

Plus-2 streaming services with plus signs: Epix will be rebranded as MGM+ in January 2023, the company revealed Wednesday. Also Wednesday: Starz announced it will rebrand international streaming service Starzplay as Lionsgate+. We’re told this was coincidence but still, good grief.

There’s another plus in town – Epix is being rebranded as MGM+.
The cable network and streaming service is getting a new name and identity as well as a handful of new titles, as part of a relaunch set for January 2023.
MGM+ joins the likes of Disney+, Discovery+, Paramount+, ESPN+ and BET+ with the use of the symbol.
It comes five years after the vaunted Hollywood studio completed its acquisition of Viacom and Lionsgate’s stake in the business, giving it full control of the network, and five months after Amazon completed its own acquisition of MGM.
As part of the rebrand, the network, which will continue to be available in the U.S. on Prime Video, cable, telco, satellite, has handed out a number of greenlights.
Hotel Cocaine, which comes from Narcos’ Chris Brancato, has been handed an eight-episode order and Julian Fellowes’ British period drama Belgravia has been given a follow-up series.

Mystery fans, rejoice!!
There's a new Acorn TV Original right around the corner, and it's very, very good.
P.D. James wrote 14 novels based on detective and poet Adam Dalgliesh, and the new series simply goes by the title Dalgliesh.
Bertie Carvel is bringing the enigmatic yet emotionally intelligent and empathetic Dalgliesh to life in a season set in 1970s England.
Dalgliesh specializes in solving unusual murders. The cases may sound relatively benign, but they unfold unusually and strike a chord with the viewer.
We'll first meet Dalgliesh looking into the murder of a nursing student poisoned to death during a live training demonstration (it's a death that sticks with you!).
Another investigation will involve the murders of a homeless man and a recently resigned Tory MP whose throats were slit in a London church.
Dalgliesh will also be called upon to solve a series of suspicious deaths at a home for the disabled.

‘Mary Magdalene’
Thirteen months after Mary Magdalene perished at Australian cinemas, the Biblical saga directed by Garth Davis probably did not have a prayer of getting a warmer reception in the Us.
So it proved last weekend as the See-Saw Films production starring Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix and Chiwetel Ejiofor was released on 62 screens by IFC Films.
Meanwhile Anthony Maras’ Hotel Mumbai continues to earn tidy sums in the Us for Bleecker Street/ShivHans Pictures. The thriller starring Dev Patel, Armie Hammer, Nazanin Boniadi, Anupam Kher, Jason Isaacs and Tilda Cobham-Hervey collected $863,000 in its third weekend wide, playing on 617 screens.
The film produced by Basil Iwanyk, Gary Hamilton, Mike Gabrawy, Julie Ryan, Andrew Ogilvie and Jomon Thomas has generated $8 million in the Us, outperforming Australia’s $3.1 million after five weekends, never having recovered from opening on the same weekend as the Christchurch massacre.

Philippa Goslett is the screenwriter of “Mary Magdalene,” the movie that looks at the life of Jesus from the perspective of his most famous contemporary female follower. The film stars Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tahar Rahim and is being released by IFC Films in the U.S. on Friday. Goslett’s previous work includes “Little Ashes,” with Robert Pattinson as Salvador Dali, and Neil Gaiman adaptation “How to Talk to Girls at Parties.” With severalnfilm and TV projects in the works, Goslett tells Variety about world-building and finding the viewpoint of the outsider.
How did the “Mary Magdalene” film come about?
The project originated with Katherine Bridle, head of development at See Saw, who very much wanted to tell stories about characters in history who have been marginalized or forgotten or, in Mary’s case, massively misrepresented over the years. There was a very beautiful script by...

There’s so much talent involved in the production of Mary Magdalene, you know it would only sit on the shelf for so long. Caught up in the dissolution of The Weinstein Company, it now hits theaters this week, a year or so after when it was figured to arrive. For some, this will be a must see curiosity. Unfortunately, for most it’ll just be a disappointment. Despite all of the talent that came together for the movie, they can’t grt it to engage with the audience. It remains stuck in neutral. Even after seeing it, you’ll almost certainly be left wondering what all the fuss once upon a time was about. The film is a biblical drama, telling the story of, you guessed it, Mary Magdalene (Rooney Mara). A woman unsure of her place in the world, she’s only sure that she wants more than...

Setting out to tell the story of Jesus’ last days from the point of view of the only woman among the apostles is the brave and interesting aim of Garth Davis’ “Mary Magdalene.”
At the film’s premiere in London last year — the film’s U.S. release was delayed due to the bankruptcy of its former distributor, The Weinstein Company — the Australian director claimed his film would “celebrate the remarkable spiritual contribution of Mary that has remained hidden for 2,000 years.” Again, a laudable ambition had it not been revealed a few minutes before that the National Gallery, the venue for the event, held no less than 50 painted images of Mary Magdalene on its walls. Maybe all of those representations have been wrong.
Davis, riding high on the success of his Oscar-nominated 2016 hit “Lion,” turns the camera on Rooney Mara as his Mary, a headstrong girl from the rock-strewn fishing village of Magdala,...

There is one compelling reason to see Mary Magdalene, Lion director Garth Davis’ long-delayed drama, a notorious casualty of the death of the Weinstein Company. It is not the work of the director, a talented filmmaker who has crafted a slow-moving Biblical epic that fails to engage. It is not the presence of Joaquin Phoenix, who plays Jesus of Nazareth as a loving but ever-pained martyr. Nor is it the typically strong work of Chiwetel Ejiofor, who plays Peter with a fire Phoenix surprisingly lacks. And it is not the script by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett, which succeeds in establishing the time and place but feels like a slog through an oft-dramatized story.
The reason, as may be clear, is Rooney Mara. As Mary of Magdala, the close follower of Jesus Christ and one of history’s most mischaracterized figures, Mara is simultaneously strong-willed, emotionally shattered, and spiritually enlightened.

“I will not be silent,” says the title character of Mary Magdalene at the end of this new trailer, and it’s as good a metaphor as any for the film itself. Recently acquired by IFC Films after getting mired in The Weinstein Company collapse for several years, Garth Davis’ film starring Rooney Mara in the title role now has a pre-Easter April 12 release date.
Mary Magdalene also stars Joaquin Phoenix and Chiwetel Ejiofor – as Jesus and Peter, respectively, and was written by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett.
In a director’s statement, Davis (Lion) has said that, with so many versions of the Biblical story put on film over the decades, producers Iain Canning and Emile Sherman sought to approach “a familiar story in a new and original way” and “from a different perspective.”

IFC Films has acquired U.S. rights to Mary Magdalene, the biopic from Lion director Garth Davis that had been in the clutches of The Weinstein Company in the midst of its collapse and eventual sale. Now the pic starring Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix and Chiwetel Ejiofor joins the likes of Hotel Mumbai as a former TWC pic that has found a new home, and IFC has set an April 12 theatrical release date for it.
The pic, which depicts the life of perhaps the most trusted confidant of Jesus Christ, was written by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett, and Iain Canning, Emile Sherman and Liz Watts produced.
The movie’s long journey started with being acquired by TWC in February 2016, reuniting the distributor with Davis from their Lion tie-up. An Easter weekend 2018 release date was eventually set before TWC pulled it off the schedule in January 2018 amid financial uncertainty.
It was in October of that year that everything changed with TWC with two explosive exposés in the New Yorker and New York Times began Harvey Weinstein’s downfall at the company, which was forced to declare bankruptcy leaving several films in limbo.
In the meantime, producers See-Saw Films and Porchlight Films launched it with a world premiere at the National Gallery in London, and international rightsholder Focus Features released the pic in several overseas territories to lukewarm response in March 2018; it has grossed $11.6 million in its theatrical life so far.
Mary Magdalene tells the story of one of the most misunderstood women in history, alternately vilified as a sinner and canonized as a saint. In the First Century A.D., the free-spirited Mary (Mara) flees the marriage her family has arranged for her, finding a sense of purpose in a radical new movement led by the charismatic, defiant preacher Jesus of Nazareth (Phoenix). The sole woman among his band of disciples, Mary defies the prejudices of her patriarchal society. She undergoes a profound spiritual awakening, becomes drawn into conflict with Jesus’s apostles Peter (Ejiofor) and Judas (Tahar Rahim), and finds herself at the center of an earth-shaking historical moment.
Arianna Bocco, Evp Acquisitions and Productions at IFC Films/Sundance Selects/IFC Midnight, sealed the IFC deal with UTA on behalf of the filmmakers.
“The film daringly challenges conventional wisdom while telling a remarkable story with nuance, grace, and respect,” Bocco said. “Garth Davis is an incredible talent, and we’re thrilled to be working with him and See-Saw Films to bring this film to audiences throughout the country.”...

MaryAnn’s quick take… A fiercely feminist and proudly revisionist historical drama that offers a powerful and much-needed rebuke to modern Christianity. Enrapturingly beautiful and intensely emotional. I’m “biast” (pro): love the cast

From Pierre Paolo Pasolini’s The Gospel According to Saint Matthew and Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ, to Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, biblical stories have inspired generations of filmmakers across the decades, with each director adding his own aesthetics and sensitivity to a story known by millions across the globe.

‘Mary Magdalene’ Review: Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara Drama is the Definition of a Mixed Blessing
For 14 years, the heathens of Hollywood have struggled to build on the lightning-strike success of Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ,” with its bizarre combination of torturous piety and throat-grabbing showmanship. Gibson infamously became persona non grata shortly after submitting his softer 2005 recut; the studios’ initial response – 2006’s “The Nativity Story,” overseen by a pre-Twilight Catherine Hardwicke – sunk without much trace; the gap in the market came to be flooded, and eventually saturated, by those evangelically funded indies (of which 2014’s “God’s Not Dead” remains the most prominent) preaching wholeheartedly, if not always so elegantly or competently, to the converted.
Universal’s “Mary Magdalene” might, then, be counted as the first serious mainstream reckoning with faith for almost a generation. Toplined by the ever-committed, never-smiling pair of Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix, helmed by “Lion” director Garth Davis, and produced by the team behind “The King’s Speech,...

Rooney Mara brings her customary intensity to the title role as Jesus’ ‘favourite pupil’, but the result is a bit too solemn to be a convincing reinvention
This movie, from screenwriters Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett and director Garth Davis, sets itself a bold task: to rescue Mary Magdalene from an age-old tradition of patriarchal condescension and misinterpretation. And yet it winds up embracing a solemn, softly-spoken and slow-moving Christian piety of its own.
Mary was a key apostle of Jesus, and intimate witness to some of the most important events in his life, but has been wrongly recast in popular tradition as a “fallen woman” and “prostitute”, perhaps because of a prurient need in the male religious hive-mind for a diametric opposite to the Blessed Virgin of the same name – a need to perpetuate the misogynistic ideology of madonna/whore, and simply to denigrate a woman’s importance.

The Weinstein Company has set a March 30, 2018, release date for Garth Davis’ upcoming Biblical drama Mary Magdalene, which means it will not be in contention in the upcoming awards season.
See-Saw Films is producing Davis’ follow-up to last season’s awards contender Lion and has collaborated with Harvey Weinstein several times, most famously on the 2010 global smash and best picture Oscar winner The King’s Speech, as well as on Lion and Macbeth.
Announcing the date on Monday, Weinstein said having Davis direct back-to-back films “was always going to be a race against time” to qualify for the upcoming awards race.

The Weinstein Co. is moving one of its would-be Oscar hopefuls, Bible epic “Mary Magdalene” starring Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara, out of the expensive awards season to focus on a less competitive spring release on March 30 timed to the Easter holiday.
It’s a fiscally responsible move — but an uncharacteristic one, as Harvey Weinstein has happily let Oscars define his business ever since “Shakespeare in Love” won best picture in 1997.
TWC has always been willing to make opportunistic changes, but taking Garth Davis’ follow-up to “Lion” out of the fall is a dramatic. It follows the company’s serial pushback of Alicia Vikander vehicle “Tulip Fever,” including many canceled press screenings, as well as a March 9, 2018 release slot for “The Untouchables” remake “The Upside,” starring Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart.
According to Harvey Weinstein, the reason for pulling “Mary Magdalene” out of the Oscar race is just a matter of time.

Sundance broke out Dee Rees’ post-World War II epic “Mudbound,” a script of sweeping ambition and detail adapted by Rees and Virgil Williams from the Hilary Jordan novel. Netflix picked up the movie for the Sundance 2017 record of $12.5 million, and plans a full-on Oscar campaign, despite a limited theatrical day-and-date release.
Also rising to instant Oscar contention was Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me By Your Name,” an elegiac summer love story set in Italy, between a vacationing teenager (Timothee Chalumet) and his father’s researcher (Armie Hammer). Sony Pictures Classics will hit the fall festivals with the critics’ darling.
Cannes introduced Todd Haynes’ cinematic tour-de-force “Wonderstruck,” adapted by Brian Selznick from his own graphic novel, which intercuts two periods, the 20s and the 70s, in silent black-and-white and color with sound. The film is the Centerpiece gala at the New York Film Festival.

Casting is once again beginning to heat up on the set of Garth Davis’ Mary Magdalene biopic, with Deadline reporting today that Chiwetel Ejiofor, star of 12 Years a Slave and The Martian, has opened talks to nab the role of Peter the Apostle.
A fisherman and key member of Jesus’ band of disciples, Peter famously denied Christ three times during his arrest and subsequent crucifixion. Soon thereafter, it’s believed that Peter was himself crucified at the hands of Emperor Nero Augustus Caesar, requesting for his cross to be turned upside down because he no longer considered himself worthy to be associated with Jesus Christ.
Though negotiations are still ongoing, it has all the makings of a meaty role for Ejiofor, who has turned in one intense, scene-stealing role after another in recent years.

Continuing the very-much-appreciated streak of doing seemingly whatever he wishes (translation: not playing a Marvel or Star Wars villain), Joaquin Phoenix has found a very promising set of collaborators for his next projects. The most concrete of these is a teaming with Jacques Audiard and John C. Reilly, who’ve already been set for the western The Sisters Brothers. [Deadline]
A previous report had informed us it’s an adaptation of Patrick deWitt‘s novel, which itself tracks two hired killers, Charlie and Eli Sisters, from Oregon to the Sierra Mountains while in search of a prospector, Herman Kermit Warm. This story is set around the California Gold Rush, and the encounters include, per Amazon, “a witch, a bear, a dead Indian, a parlor of drunken floozies, and a gang of murderous fur trappers.” Phoenix and Reilly in that together? Whatever you make of Audiard, there’s reason to be intrigued.
