I don’t make films myself, but it seems obvious to me there are but two places to learn how to make movies: in the outside world constrained by so-called reality, and in the inside world of the cinema’s darkness, constrained by so-called illusion. Travelogue tales and quotidian reportage being of little interest here, a log for illusionary research and experience, I must duly deliver my film report on the films that came upon me in the darkness of the Melbourne International Film Festival, which ran from July 31 - August 17, and the lessons learned.

Epic of Everest
So many academics and cinephiles alike seem consternated by Walter Benjamin's paen to the the aura of an original artwork, something squandered, lost, obfuscated, or obliterated in the mechanical reproduction of art in post cards, photographic duplicates, and, of course, cinema. BFI to showcase restored The Epic of Everest, shot by John Noel with primitive film equipment in 1924, at London film festival
Even today, the debate continues over whether George Mallory and Andrew Irvine made it to the summit of Everest in 1924. What is more certain is that it has become one of mountaineering's most captivating stories and the official film record of the climb represents one of the most remarkable treasures in the national film archive.
Now, 89 years on and 60 years after Everest was officially first conquered, the BFI has announced details of the film's restoration and world premiere.
The Epic of Everest was made by the explorer Captain John Noel, who accompanied Mallory and Irvine on what was the third attempt on the mountain.
Robin Baker, head curator at the BFI National Archive, called the film one of the greatest treasures in the archive: "It represents a key moment...

Christine Bleakley has reportedly fired her manager to help improve her TV career.
The Dancing on Ice co-host is said to have quit management company Avalon in order to sign up with James Grant, who also manages the likes of Phillip Schofield, Ant & Dec, Holly Willoughby and Davina McCall.
It is the second time that Bleakley has departed from her manager in three years, having previously fired John Noel in 2010 after leaving the BBC for ITV.
Bleakley's latest move is said to have been made in order to find more work, having only appeared on a number of shows since being axed from Daybreak, reports The Mirror.
"Since moving to ITV there is a feeling that she hasn't fulfilled her potential and could be doing more shows," a source said.
"Many of their biggest and best stars are on the books with James Grant and so Christine wants to join them.

Russell Brand has confessed that he would probably have died if he had not attended rehab. Appearing on Piers Morgan's Life Stories, the comedian - who has been sober for over six years - revealed that his rampant drug addiction led a friend and his manager John Noel to stage an intervention to force him into seeking treatment. "I was probably six months away from - well [my friend] goes, 'You need to stop taking drugs right now or in six months you'll be in prison, a lunatic asylum or dead'. And that's the first time anyone had said anything like that to me," he recalled. "I still thought, 'Rehab, I don't like the sound of that'. So that's (more)...

Russell Brand's drug problems became so debilitating at the height of his addiction he was warned he would die if he refused help.
The Get Him To The Greek star spiralled out of control after initially finding fame in his native U.K. as a stand-up comedian and TV host.
His agent, John Noel, ordered the funnyman to seek professional help after his son saw the star taking heroin at a party and Brand only agreed after he was told he wouldn't survive if he didn't go to rehab.
The actor, who has now turned his life around, tells British host Piers Morgan, "I was probably six months away from, well (my friend) goes, 'You need to stop taking drugs right now or in six months you'll be in prison, a lunatic asylum or dead'. And that's the first time anyone had said anything like that to me.
"I still thought... 'Rehab, I don't like the sound of that'. So that's when (agent) John (Noel) and (my friend) took me in a room... He said, 'Russell needs to go away, because he's doolally (crazy)... but he's got to want to go for himself'... The thing with drug addiction is the person themselves has to make that choice because it's got to come from within, and I go, 'Yeah, I don't think I fancy it'. John went, 'F**k that you're going'."...

Editors at Britain's The People newspaper claim to have seen footage of the 23 year old, Peaches Geldof approaching a car in a London street and allegedly purchasing a substance believed to be cannabis. They claim to have been offered the video clip by a man representing an alleged drug dealer, but refused to pay the fee he demanded.
Peaches' father Bob Geldof has been informed about the video and has confirmed he will be speaking to his daughter about it.
He tells the publication, "I appreciate you letting me know about this. I can't talk about her as it inflames everything, so the discussion will be between a dad and his daughter - in as much as you can speak to a 23 year old. I need to do the family thing and be left alone with this."
Peaches' agent, John Noel, adds, "We are not getting involved with the matter...

Eighteen months ago, the comedian's career seemed on the edge of collapse. Now he's on the verge of international stardom. So what went right?
When Russell Brand was 16, he inscribed a school-leaving card to his first girlfriend. "You might be as famous as me one day," he wrote. "If so, see you at the top." There was no "might", not from the very beginning, about how famous Russell Brand expected to be.
But the rest of us might have been forgiven for thinking the game was up for Brand after the 2008 incident when, egged on by Jonathan Ross, he prank-called the elderly actor Andrew Sachs to boast he had slept with his granddaughter. The incident cost him his show on Radio 2 and turned much of the UK media against him. Yet, a year-and-a-half on from "Sachsgate", while Ross's star is falling, Brand has become a transatlantically famous name.
