This and many other water-related movie parallels are drawn in the new video for Flock of Dimes new single "(This is Why) I Can't Wear White." To fit the song's trance-like rhythms, editor Ben O'Brien cut together snippets of 78 different features, from such obvious picks as Deep Blue Sea, Waterworld and Titanic to less expected pics like The Descendants, Hook, and Rushmore. "The Adventures of Tintin" dominated the nominations but it was "Rango" that received the most trophies at the 10th Visual Effects Society (Ves) awards. Stan Lee received the the Lifetime Achievement Award and visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull received the George Melies Award. Patton Oswalt hosted the event held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Antonion Banderas, Lou Ferrigno, director Chris Miller, Marc Webb, and Jennifer Yuh Nelson presented awards. But the surprise appearance by Martin Scorsese was the highlight of the evening.

• Tony-winning composer Maury Yeston talked in great detail to Harry Haun about the journey of "Nine" from screen (as "8 1/2") to stage and back to screen. "There are only two ways to approach Broadway shows becoming movies," Yeston says. "One of them is to be an over-controlling fuddy-duddy and not let anybody change anything. The other is to step back and go with the new medium." For Yeston, "The adaptation back into film was a very organic one that made a tremendous amount of sense. It was a great opportunity to allow this piece -- which had been so cinematic to begin with -- to find again its place in the grammar of cinema. That means things like dissolves, edits, close-ups, lighting effects -- things film can do for exposition to get inside the mind." Playbill

"Slumdog Millionaire" took the award for film editing while "Breaking Bad" copped the prize for TV editing at the Hollywood Post Alliance's fourth annual HPA Awards, held Thursday night at the Skirball Center in Los Angeles.
The awards honor behind-the-scenes talent working in film, TV and commercials.
Special awards were presented to Ben Burtt, who received the Charles S. Swartz Award for outstanding contribution in the field of post production; Paul Haggar, Lifetime Achievement Award; and Dvs Digital Video Systems, Signiant, S. two Corp., Engineering Excellence Award.
