Official companion podcasts for popular TV series are not a recent phenomenon. Ever since networks realized that they couldn’t leave all the analytical fun to fans, big time TV shows have been accompanied by network-sponsored audio complements.
HBO has been a frequent producer with podcasts for its dramas like Watchmen, House of the Dragon, Succession, and more. Other networks have since gotten in on the action like Paramount Network with Yellowstone, Showtime with Dexter: New Blood, and Apple TV+ with For All Mankind.
The acclaimed American TV brand FX, however, never seemed too keen on official tie-in podcasting despite presenting many intriguing prospects over the years like The Bear and Fargo. That all changed this year when the Disney-owned company launched FX’s Shōgun: The Official Podcast to accompany the weekly release of its epic miniseries Shōgun.

In a recent interview with Push Square, FF16 Dlc Director Takeo Kujiraoka revealed that replacing the traditional turn-based combat to action RPG combat attracted more younger players to Final Fantasy 16.
Further voicing his satisfaction, Takeo said:
“I think this shows that, to a certain extent, we’ve achieved one of our initial goals – to have players of all ages play the latest Final Fantasy game.”
While this change has worked for Final Fantasy 16, Kujiraoka emphasized that the future sequels will not necessarily be following the same direction. He added that with more young adults joining the player base, more possibilities will be opening up for the future installments.
This aligns with the comments made by FF16 producer Naoki Yoshida in his interview with Famitsu magazine back in 2022. Yoshida had explained how turn based RPG did not appeal to the younger audience. He also made a point about ditching the open-world design,...

In a recent interview, Yoshida talked about this latest Dlc called The Rising Tide and also mentioned other details about the franchise.
The director also mentioned how it would be a good idea to make a new Tactics title. This spin-off of the main games has become a real fan favorite over the years, which could mean that the studio is considering the idea.

Critically acclaimed anime director Naoko Yamada, whose filmography includes the Sound! Euphonium series, Clannad, and K-On!, has us excited for her next work, which is set to come out this year. Kimi no Iro (Your Color) was initially set to be released in 2023, but the title has been delayed to 2024. Now, with the release of the film’s first trailer, we have also confirmed the premiere date for the movie, which is going to be August 30, 2024.
Kimi no Iro‘s fall 2023-to-summer 2024 delay upset some fans, but the movie is now on track to release in several months’ time, so fans can rejoice. The movie will follow high school student Totsuko, who has the ability to perceive the emotions of other people as colors. Because of this ability, she has to tread very lightly and tell white lies to other people to avoid darkening their colors, which is important to her.

In a recent series of tweets, mangaka Hajime Yoshida, known for their work on the Girls Und Panzer spin-off manga Garupan Demonium (Girls Pandemonium) expressed profound frustration and disappointment over the lack of communication by Kadokawa regarding important decisions involving his manga.
The author voiced his concerns in reply to a post which noted that Girls Pandemonium manga was no longer available on Comic Walker.
Yoshida began by lamenting the lack of consultation or communication from the publisher before taking such a crucial action. He stated that this lack of communication has been a recurring issue since the serialization of the manga began.
The author also refuted Kadokawa’s claim of having discussions regarding the series’ termination, which was made in their statement, asserting that no such dialogue took place.

There was a time when Japanese filmmaker Kijū Yoshida was a cinephile’s mark of exquisite taste. While not entirely obscure, his work has been less-discussed than those of contemporaries Ōshima, Imamura, and Suzuki, even if he’s always been grouped among them as a key author of the Japanese New Wave.
In the early years of online cinephilia, mentioning Yoshida was a sort of a code, a way to signal that your knowledge about Japanese cinema from that era was a bit more nuanced. It is, in many ways, thanks to this interest that these films are more widely talked-about and now the subject of Film at Lincoln Center’s retrospective running from December 1-8.
My introduction to Yoshida’s cinema came courtesy Allan Fish, a self-taught critic who watched films (and TV) from all over the world and wrote vivaciously about the moving image on his blog Wonders in the Dark.

Melodrama has always been one of the most crowd-pleasing genres, with its themes of misery and triumphing love appealing to a rather large demographic. As such, it comes as no surprise that Atg filmmakers also dealt with the specific genre, with Kenji Yoshida coming up with a movie that seems to want to somewhat reinvigorate the category by introducing strong elements of social commentary.

Katsuo is a young man who is trying to escape the place he was born, where the dominant mining business is essentially closing down, which is why he has come to Tokyo, where he ends up working as a high rise windows cleaner. Before that, however, he was working at a dump truck business, where we find him for the first time, “accommodating” the needs of a widow whose recently deceased husband looks like him.

Nishijin is a district in Kyoto famous for “Nishijin-ori”, an ultra-expensive fabric produced with traditional means. Yoichi Takabayashi takes the folk story standard of the double suicide (between a prostitute and a poor worker) and places it in the particular setting in the 70s in “Double Suicide at Nishijin”, in an approach though, that could easily take place in the 1700s, when the original double suicide story was first presented.

Long cutscenes (and lots of them) have been kind of a Final Fantasy tradition for decades now. Learning to love this franchise often means learning to love putting the controller down from time to time and simply watching the story unfold. That being said, Final Fantasy 16‘s potentially record-setting total cutscene length may test even the most patient franchise fans.
Earlier this year, Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida estimated that the game featured about 11 hours of “cinematic cutscenes” that were all “seamlessly interwoven into the game, playing in-engine in real-time.” He mentioned that the team really wanted to take the time to tell a complete story within the game, which many took as a reference to the fact that Final Fantasy 15‘s full story actually played out across multiple Dlc installments. Even if it wasn’t a reference to that controversial decision, many fans were happy to know that Final Fantasy 16 would offer a complete,...

Considering the great success “Chernobyl” had back in 2019, a similar series about a similar disaster was bound to come from Japan, with the country's entertainment industry dealing with the events and their aftermath intently as soon as 10 years passed, in 2021. The impressive thing with “Days”, apart from the fact that it was shot in the Fukushima prefecture where the actual disaster took place, is that its level of production does not pale almost at all in front of the humongous US-uk one the HBO titles was. Let us take things from the beginning though.

The true story behind the Fukushima nuclear disaster is told on Netflix’s The Days, which is a dramatized retelling of the devastating days following the earthquake on March 11, 2011. Recently, we saw the movie Suzume, which was a fictional and fantasy version of an homage to the people affected by the catastrophe. In The Days, we see the people who worked hard day and night to make sure that a bigger disaster, the biggest of its kind, would not occur. The show is dark and empathetic towards the people on the ground during the disaster, specifically Masao Yoshida. Please do read our detailed review before diving into all that went down in The Days!

When I heard about The Days, I was super curious to see the inside happenings of Japan’s nuclear disaster of 2011. We all know about the disastrous earthquake, which was followed by a tsunami, but it was also followed by a nuclear disaster that could’ve contaminated half of Japan. Of course, to address the elephant in the room, The Days is unlike the edge-of-your-seat Chernobyl. Instead, it’s a slow-burn approach that brings in too many technicalities to make an emotional impact. It’s an 8-part mini-series that follows multiple characters that embody real-life people who contributed to managing the nuclear disaster over the few days following the 11th of March, hence the fitting title. Although the subject matter is quite harrowing, the execution of the show is boring at times.

On May 3, Saudi Arabia’s Public Authority for Media Twitter account stated that Final Fantasy 16 will not release in the country due to “the publisher’s unwillingness to make the necessary modifications.” This game is the latest in a long list of titles banned in the country, including Spec Ops: The Line, The Last of Us Part 2, Fallout: New Vegas, and most entries in the God of War franchise.
However, while Saudi Arabia’s Public Authority for Media sometimes states the exact reasons why a game is banned, sometimes it doesn’t. Currently, Final Fantasy 16’s sits in the latter category. However, that hasn’t stopped the internet from speculating, and some compelling theories have emerged from all of that speculation.

With the oversaturated world of teen coming-of-age content on Netflix, it is easy to fall into a rabbit hole of overly sexualized teen shows that just glamorize the tricky parts of being a teen. Compared to the western teen world, the east prefers to teach life lessons through cute little romance shows inspired by popular anime or manga. Japan is not new to high school dramas, and “From Me to You” rekindles fond memories of school rather than bringing anything new to the screen. As someone who hasn’t watched the anime, I can absolutely understand why it would’ve been translated into a live-action show for high school students in Japan. The show subtly tackles issues such as school bullying, feeling like you’ve brought a knife in a gunfight, high-school exams, the fear of growing up, and many such struggles of a school student without ever coming across as a life lesson.

Sony Group Corp. CFO Hiroki Totoki, who is set to succeed Kenichiro Yoshida as group president on April 1, outlined his evolving corporate strategy for the Japanese tech and entertainment giant on Monday.
“I’m very much obsessed with growth. It’s very important for any company to get growth to maintain people’s motivation and maintain the customer,” Totoki told the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference.
He added that, as Sony’s financial chief, “I always take care of two key metrics. Number one is growth and number two is the profit margin. And, as a CFO, I always focused on these two important metrics. If they go in the right way, the other metrics will take care of themselves. And that’s my simple philosophy.”

While it’s not accurate to say that every Final Fantasy game is either a medieval fantasy or sci-fi title, those have historically been the franchise’s most popular and prominent genre flavors. Sci-fi Final Fantasy games obviously have fans and have historically been very successful (just look at what Final Fantasy 7 did for the series), but it seems like there is always a loud cry for the franchise to return to its medieval fantasy roots. While some recent Final Fantasy games have tried to blend sci-fi and classic fantasy concepts, those hybrids have done little to quell the cries for a mainline, single-player Final Fantasy adventure that offers a more traditional setting.
Well, Final Fantasy 16 will not only return to medieval fantasy but will prominently feature a dark fantasy style that feels a bit bleaker and much more violent than many previous Final Fantasy titles that utilized variations of that medieval fantasy theme.

“Living in a paradise of blue waters and skies. It’s the touristy image most Japanese have… The locals want to see realism in films about Okinawa” director Yasuhiro Yoshida explains in a recent interview with Jff+. Since December, the streaming platform has uploaded a lineup of free-to-watch titles, including Yoshida’s 2013 feature “Leaving on the 15th Spring”. A gentle, heartfelt drama, the movie brews an unexpectedly nuanced message about growing up, that is both unique and universal.

While many (including myself) are gushing over just how good Final Fantasy 16 seems to be, some of my time with the demo was certainly spent wondering just how the franchise’s fanbase is going to react to just how different the game really is.
I knew Final Fantasy 16 was an Arpg, but I was surprised by just how much of an action game it really is. The game’s real-time combat is arguably the star of the show, and Final Fantasy 16’s elaborate boss battles are clearly designed to offer the game’s marquee moments. The game is filled with elements of classic Final Fantasy adventures (the team used phrases like “pillars” and “constants” to describe them), but it’s about as much of a departure from those games as a major Final Fantasy can be without completely ignoring everything that came before.

Sony Pictures’ operating income for its fiscal third quarter ending December fell to 179 million, down 86 percent from 1.31 billion in the same period the previous year, hit by the lack of major theatrical hits and lower revenue from television licensing.
Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile was the Sony unit’s biggest earner with 96 million, followed by Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical and Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody, both logging 25 million.
The same quarter in 2021 had seen the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Venom: Let There Be Carnage, along with the sale of Gsn Games and the licensing deal for Seinfeld, delivering the film unit its best-ever results.
Quarterly revenue at the pictures division fell 42 percent to 2.35 billion from 4.06 billion, despite contributions from the acquisitions of Bad Wolf and Industrial Media, the company said in Tokyo on Thursday.

Together with Oshima Nagisa and Shinoda Masahiro, Yoshida was part of the Shochiku-backed Nouvelle Vague of the late 1950s and early 1960s that had a major impact on Japanese cinema both then and in succeeding decades.
A graduate of the elite University of Tokyo, where he studied French literature, Yoshida joined the Shochiku studio in 1955 and served as assistant director to Ozu Yasujiro and Kinoshita Keisuke.
In 1960 he made his directorial debut with the youth drama “Good-for-Nothing.” This and his following films “Blood Is Dry” (1960) and “Bitter End of a Sweet Night,” with their unsparing depictions of contemporary social ills, marked Yoshida, together with fellow Shochiku up-and-comers Oshima and Shinoda, as rebels against studio convention. The trio came to be grouped under the label Shochiku Nouvelle Vague, a nod to...

The tongue is a very sensual part of the human body. It has many uses beyond allowing us to speak and create words & sounds. Tongue is a very sultry, sensual animated short film made by a filmmaker named Kaho Yoshida. She animated this and created this as a personal project, entirely on her own time. It's only 2 minutes long and goes hand-in-hand with the other pleasure short we posted recently - Klimax. The film is about Yoshida's personal experiences with men, about how sometimes she'd prefer to just steal their tongue, take it home, and use it for her own pleasure without having to hear them speak (or deal with them at all). Sounds quite nice, actually. Featuring the voice of Colin Chapin. The way she visualizes and animates this little climatic fairy tale is quite enticing, let's just say. It's a beautiful animated film that is an alluring watch.
