Doctor Who has never been shy about tipping a hat to other science fiction franchises. The 2014 Christmas special “Last Christmas” owes a heavy debt to Alien, with its face-hugging alien parasites. Several Star Trek references have beamed onto Doctor Who stories, including the Starfleet-esque crew at the start of another Christmas special, “A Christmas Carol.” The world of comic book superheroes, particularly stories starring Superman, clearly influenced “The Return of Doctor Mysterio.”
Unsurprisingly, Doctor Who and its spinoffs have also acknowledged the most popular sci-fi franchise of the past several decades, Star Wars. Nerdy kid Clyde drops several Wars mentions in The Sarah Jane Adventures, and the Eleventh Doctor compared himself to Yoda in the short “Meanwhile in the Tardis.”
But for the adventures of the Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, the Star Wars nods are getting much more subtle. Speaking with Doctor Who Magazine, senior art director Crissy Howes,...

“Ooh, jukebox” – the words uttered by the Fourteenth Doctor when invited to nosey around the Fifteenth Doctor’s new Tardis in the closing moments of 60th anniversary special “The Giggle”.
Ooh, jukebox indeed. Specifically, the Doctor’s jukebox is a 1946-designed Wurlitzer 1015 nicknamed “The Bubbler” on account of the bubbles that move through its colourful tubes as it plays tunes. Even more specifically, we’ve seen the same make and model of jukebox twice before on Doctor Who, once on the set of Clara’s 1950s-Diner Tardis, and once five billion years into the future on Platform One, where the great and the good are gathered to watch the imminent destruction of planet Earth.
Whether or not it’s supposed to be the self-same jukebox from those previous appearances, or simply something shiny that caught the Doctor’s eye, the songs it plays are significant. Production designer Phil Sims explained...

Unlike “The Star Beast”, there’s no in-episode commentary for “Wild Blue Yonder” but there’s still plenty for fans of nerdy making-of details to get their teeth into thanks to this informative how-to thread from director Tom Kingsley, and this bonus video going into how the VFX and practical in-camera effects were achieved.
Add to that a fresh episode of The Official Doctor Who Podcast containing nuggets from Russell T Davies alongside reactions and chat from hosts Christel Dee, Juno Dawson and Tyrell Charles. Plus a decent behind-the-scenes tour from Doctor Who: Unleashed. Watch and listen to them all for fun factoids and titbits like the ones below.

Warning: contains spoilers for “The Star Beast”
Doctor Who’s new Tardis interior set will do “amazing things,” promises producer Phil Collinson. Speaking alongside fellow producer Vicki Delow and actor David Tennant on the official inside commentary accompanying “The Star Beast”, Collinson explained that the vast new white interior engineered by production designer Phil Sims isn’t only as big as it looks, but also has some surprises in store.
“All the lights work independently, they can spell out words. Every single one of the roundel lights is an individually controlled LED light. Viewers, you are going to see this set do amazing things through the series.”
Tennant describes it as a great honour to have been the Doctor to unveil the new Tardis interior, and have been “the first person to fiddle” with the super-sized new console and multi-layer gantries, as well as the first person to run around...

The 60th anniversary specials of Doctor Who are coming to feature-packed DVD and Blu-ray releases in December.
At the time of writing, the first of three Doctor Who 60th anniversary special episodes has been broadcast. They’ve seen David Tennant return to the Tardis, accompanied by Catherine Tate as Donna Noble.
The three episodes – The Star Beast, Wild Blue Yonder and The Giggle – have also marked Russell T Davies’ return to the showrunner job on Doctor Who. He’s been busy scribbling the new episodes, that have been going out back in a Saturday night slot.
Furthermore, just as when Davies brought Doctor Who back in 2005, we’re getting some feature-packed discs to go with the show. The BBC will be releasing the 60th anniversary specials on DVD and Blu-ray, just in time for Christmas.
The release date, lest you think this is one of the endless modern news stories...

Typically the cold opens of “Saturday Night Live” parody the politics of the past week, but for its second show of 2021, the NBC late-night sketch comedy series looked ahead — to Sunday’s Super Bowl.
Kenan Thompson, who portrayed sportscaster James Brown in the sketch, which you can watch above, kicked things off acknowledging the complications of late, but that “today we come together in the spirit of football — and to murder millions of chickens for their delicious wings.”
However, given what the NFL has gone through in recent months with new Covid health and safety guidelines and a high volume of players testing position, that became part of the discussion for Thompson’s Brown, Chris Redd’s Nate Burleson, Mikey Day’s Phil Sims and Beck Bennett’s Boomer Esiason.
They also explored how companies advertising during the Super Bowl were planning to spread the word about the Covid vaccine...

It wasn’t easy coming up with fresh space ships for the rebooted “Star Trek Discovery” and “Lost in Space,” or the “Star Trek” riffs on “USS Callister” (“Black Mirror”) and Seth MacFarlane’s “The Orville.” After all, there’s cultural significance and legacy and immense pressure in creating what amounts to homes and playgrounds and battle arenas, with distinct shape languages that help define the looks of their shows.
Of course, “Star Trek” offers its own set of challenges and, with “Discovery,” it required a special Federation ship that was only a decade removed from the original Enterprise. For “Lost in Space,” they had a lot more artistic license in designing a futuristic Jupiter 2. However, for the USS Callister, the “Black Mirror” team had to steer clear of any direct references to “Star Trek” while still evoking its ’60s vibe. MacFarlane’s team, meanwhile, was tasked with coming up...

New York -- James Brown, Phil Simms and Cris Collinsworth will host the renowned "Inside the NFL" when the show returns to the air on Showtime in early September.
"Inside the NFL" is the longest-running series on cable, having gone 31 years on HBO before the network canceled it this year. Showtime and CBS Sports said a month ago that it had revived the series, which is produced by NFL Films and CBS Sports. It'll air Wednesdays throughout the season on Showtime, produced by the NFL Films' Steve Sabol and CBS Sports' Sean McManus.
And it's CBS Sports that will supply two of the three hosts of the program. Brown is the host of "The NFL Today" and an Emmy winner three times, including this year's Sports Emmy. Simms has been lead analyst for the CBS coverage of the NFL since 1998. Collinsworth is an eight-time Emmy winner, including seven times as outstanding sports studio analyst. He has worked for NBC and Fox Sports before returning to NBC Sports as studio analyst for "Sunday Night Football" and game analyst for the NFL Network's "Thursday Night Football."
Collinsworth started his broadcasting career as a reporter for "Inside the NFL" in 1989 and had been co-host on HBO from 1990 to 2007. "We're just going to have some fun," Collinsworth told reporters in a conference call Monday. "That's what the 'Inside the NFL' show has always been about."...
