Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey have their first “Jurassic World” co-star. THR reports that Rupert Friend is the latest actor cast to star in Gareth Edward‘s upcoming installment. Friend also joins Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, the only other name on the call sheet, as the film inches closer to its mid-June production start.

Friend in a big-budget blockbuster? Maybe it was bound to happen. Director Wes Ball tells Den of Geek that he remembers seeing the original 1968 sci-fi classic Planet of the Apes on “HBO or something” as a child, watching with his dad. “I’m sure all the concepts probably went over my head,” he muses now. “I was probably very young. I don’t remember having a reaction to the Statue of Liberty, but I remember the images very clearly. I remember the feral humans in the grass and the apes on horses and the sets and obviously that [ending] on the beach. That’s what I remember—the images, the iconography of it all.”
The original Planet of the Apes indeed contains some of the most iconic images in all of sci-fi cinema, and it’s no coincidence that some of those images—along with other references—have been reimagined for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the 10th entry overall...

After finding himself drawn to the age-old moral quandary of nature vs nurture, filmmaker Sebastian Delascasas started to question what he would do if someone expressed a desire so dark it could barely be uttered. How would he approach the situation and what would he then think of that person? Promise, his directorial debut, explores the immediate moment of such a confession being made in confidence to a trusted friend, and with the raw horror of the aired admission, forces its audience to place themselves within the unbearable discomfort of the situation as it plays out on screen. Ahead of today’s premiere Delascasas, who also takes on an acting role in Promise, spoke to us about the trepidation he felt researching the film, losing his main actor the night before the shoot and wanting his audience to feel the palpable discomfort as they watched.

Just minutes before the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was set to get underway in April 2023, New York Post Editor-in-Chief Keith Poole and star columnist Miranda Devine were on a mission to find an extra seat. Inside the Washington Hilton hotel, the pair had a very special guest that they needed to accommodate and their table was oversubscribed. After some musical chairs among staffers, Vivek Ramaswamy spent much of the evening talking with Poole, a Brit feted as a “boy wonder” in Murdoch circles.
Poole, who like all Murdoch editors has a direct line to “the boss,” had already created waves in his handling of Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential announcement. “Been There, Don That” was the headline that was tucked away on page 26 of the Nov. 22, 2022 edition of the Post. But it was the teaser at the bottom of the front page that went viral. “Florida man makes announcement.”
Soon, Poole would be in a pickle.

Fox Corporation argued that it should be dismissed from Smartmatic’s $2.7 billion lawsuit against Fox News, contending that a lower court judge erred in his assessment of the influence that Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch and other executives had over the editorial decisions of the news network.
In January, New York Judge David Cohen refused to dismiss Smartmatic’s claims against Fox News parent Fox Corporation, concluding that the voting systems company had “sufficiently alleged” that Rupert Murdoch and Lachlan Murdoch played “an affirmative role” in the broadcast of false claims of election rigging. The ruling was not a decision on whether the Smartmatic claims are true, just that the company had cleared the threshold in its lawsuit with enough factual allegations to be a triable issue.
But in an appeal brief to New York’s appellate division this week, Fox Corporation’s attorneys wrote that Cohen “concluded that Smartmatic adequately alleged vicarious liability because ‘Corp.

After years of stops and starts, The Crow reboot is finally flying and now has the first trailer to prove it.
Bill Skarsgard leads the film, which centers on a man who is murdered, alongside his fiancée but is granted supernatural powers to seek revenge.
The Crow began life as a comic book, with James O’Barr debuting the character in 1989. It grew to new levels of popularity with the cult hit film, which starred the late Brandon Lee, who was tragically killed in an on-set accident during filming. Multiple sequels followed, including The Crow: City of Angels (1996), The Crow: Salvation (2000) and The Crow: Wicked Prayer (2005).
But the current reboot took nearly 20 years to get off the ground, with multiple stars and filmmakers coming and going. Blade Stephen Norrington took a stab at one point, while F. Javier Gutiérrez (Before the Fall) and star Luke Evans tried to break the curse at another point.

While the perils of higher education are becoming a wider part of the conversation, namely its lack of guarantee and exorbitant cost (particularly in America), solid academic preparation for the future is still often a ticket to a more expansive life. In Tubi’s “Boarders,” created by BAFTA-nominated screenwriter Daniel Lawrence Taylor, five Black teens from London’s inner city uproot their lives for the opportunity to attend St. Gilbert’s College, a prestigious boarding school in the U.K. Though the scholarship recipients are eager to begin paving a new path for themselves, the constant othering, feelings of isolation and fetishism begin coloring what should be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The Black students experience gutting racial and economic adversity, but the brilliance of “Boarders” is its ability to weave a rhythmic humor throughout the series.
Before I get into the specifics of “Boarders,” first a note about its curious origins.

In the British teen dramedy Boarders, five Black students of great intelligence, but modest means, are given scholarships to the elite private school St. Gilbert’s. Their presence has little to do with altruism, and a lot to do with the school’s PR problem, after a rich white student posts a video of himself and his friends harassing an unhoused man. Gus (played by Daniel Lawrence Taylor, who also created the series) runs the charity that helped select the five lucky kids, and while all of them are aware...

A good high-school or college TV show is like a time machine, designed to transport nostalgic older viewers backward to youth or (more rarely) younger viewers forward to an anticipated maturity. At the same time, it’s a sufficiently codified genre that the nostalgia is as much for other fictional favorites in the same narrative space as it is for any “real” experience of high school or college.
A well-cast high-school or college TV show is a time machine on yet another level, enjoyable in its immediacy but also a preview for decades of future ensembles. Even if the breakouts from a Freaks and Geeks or Sex Education or Dear White People aren’t always the stars you’d expect, one needn’t watch more than a scene or two to know how well-populated those shows are.

Updated with Trump response: After just three hours of deliberations, a New York jury today said Donald Trump has to pay E. Jean Carroll more than $83 million in her defamation trial against the former president.
Of that impressive $83.3 million, $65 million is punitive damages and $11 million is for harm to the former Elle columnist’s reputation.
“I fully disagree with both verdicts, and will be appealing this whole Biden Directed Witch Hunt focused on me and the Republican Party,” a self pitying Trump said soon afterwards on social media. “This is not America,” Trump added on his Truth Social platform in words he was heard to mumble yesterday and similar to what the now incarcerated Harvey Weinstein said when he was found guilty of rape in 2020 by another Manhattan jury

Exclusive: ArtsEd has lost another two board members after Deadline exposed bullying and misconduct allegations at the prestigious London drama school.
Simon Dowson-Collins, general counsel at Rupert Murdoch’s publishing firm HarperCollins UK, and London Metropolitan University executive Jennifer Wilkinson have stepped down as trustees.
They were appointed in June 2022, meaning they only served for a year and a half on the ArtsEd board. Under UK charity rules, trustees can be in place for nine years or more.
Their exit coincides with the departure of Brian Brodie, who resigned as chairman in December for personal reasons. It followed criticism of the board’s handling of the bullying allegations.
Dowson-Collins and Wilkinson did not respond to a request for comment and the reasons for their departure are unclear.
An ArtsEd spokesperson said: “We have ten trustees serving the institution and managing all the necessary day to day responsibilities. We are in...

[This story contains spoilers for Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire]
Rebel Moon star Ed Skrein has created his most memorable villain yet in Admirable Atticus Noble, and he found inspiration from the unlikeliest source: Olivia Colman.
Alongside Sofia Boutella’s Kora, the English actor is the de facto co-lead of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon ensemble, as his Admiral Noble commandeers the Veldt farming village that Kora, a former Imperium soldier turned fugitive, now calls home. This hostile takeover prompts Kora to put together a team to combat Noble and his vast army, and so it quickly becomes apparent that the two-part Netflix film series will center on Noble and Kora’s blood feud. And considering that Noble’s body has android-like modifications, their surface-level dynamic is somewhat similar to Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, but instead of going to that obvious place for inspiration, Skrein took a major left turn.

A Fox Corp. shareholder got a bit of a brushoff when he asked if or how the company was doing anything structurally to protect itself against legal liability around the 2020 election and if and how executive pay policies may have been tweaked to to reflect ongoing legal peril.
At the company’s annual meeting, John Chevedden noted Fox’ $787 million payout last spring to settle a lawsuit with Dominion Voting Systems right before the trial started. Another company Smartmatic is suing for $2.7 billion. These are big chunks of cash. Chevedden, who pops up everywhere, is the leading proponent of shareholder proposals annually in the U.S.
Chase Carey, who sits on the board’s compensation committee and present at the annual confab at the Zanuck Theatre on the Fox lot, didn’t exactly give an answer. He noted “refinements” to pay policies this year from last. Compensation is based on both qualitative and quantitative measures.

Rupert Murdoch is finally — allegedly — slowing down, marking his final day Wednesday as Executive Chairman of News Corp. by praising his son Lachlan, who is taking over his role as company leader.
Rupert Murdoch, age 92, vowed he will still play an active role as he becomes Chairman Emeritus of News Corp. and Fox Corporation, the latter where he is scheduled to meet shareholders on Friday in his final act as chairman.
Lachlan Murdoch is 52 and now becomes the sole chairman of both companies.
“Lachlan is a principled leader, and a believer in the social purpose of journalism. I hope to continue an active role in the company,” Rupert Murdoch said on Wednesday at the News Corp. farewell.
Rupert Murdoch talked about the “opportunities and challenges” of artificial intelligence in his Wednesday remarks. He also spoke of Wall St. Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who remains detained in Russia.

Wednesday marks Rupert Murdoch’s last day as chairman of News Corp., the publishing company that formed his initial entry into the U.S. market nearly 50 years ago. His son Lachlan Murdoch, the CEO of Fox Corp., will assume the role of chairman in his place.
But he told shareholders of the company that he does not intend to ride off into the sunset.

Brian Cox said he jumped at the chance to play the mysterious figure of the Controller in upcoming James Bond-themed gameshow “007: Road to a Million.”
When asked why he joined the series, which sees real people competing for a £1 million ($1.2 million) by taking part in heart-stopping physical challenges worthy of the fictional spy, Cox deadpanned: “They paid me an enormous amount of money. And that’s always very attractive.”
But the “Succession” star added that he has always wanted to join the 007 franchise and said when the job offer first came in he assumed it was to play the villain in the next Bond feature film. “I thought ‘Oh, 007, finally,'” he said. “I should have realized that we haven’t got a new James Bond so why would they be casting a villain? But I thought: ‘This might be my big moment to play a Bond villain.

Updated with Lachlan Murdoch comments: Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch said his father, Rupert, “is very much involved and will be for years to come” despite stepping down from his chairman role in September.
“I would like to congratulate my father on his 70-year career at News Corp. and Fox,” Murdoch said during a call with Wall Street analysts to discuss fiscal first-quarter results. “His enduring legacy can be felt in both of these companies. And I can assure you that he is still very much involved and will continue to be for years to come.”
While Fox edged Wall Street analysts’ estimates but profits dipped due to a comparative lack of political advertising.
While in some respects it has been business as usual for Rupert Murdoch’s media empire, it has undeniably entered a new phase since the 92-year-old mogul stepped down in September as chairman of Fox and News Corp.

Everyone in the business knows that CEOs at big media and entertainment companies get lavish pay packages: nearly always eight figures, and sometimes nine if there’s a big deal involved (like Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos’ $38 million haul last year, or Wbd CEO David Zaslav’s infamous $246 million haul in 2021).
Their compensation has been scrutinized amid the strikes — but beyond the hefty salaries, lucrative bonuses and stock options, most top executives also get their fair share of perquisites (ya know, “perks”). Some are standard (CEOs get access to company health insurance plans, too! And they also get their 401(k) contributions matched!), but there are others that, well, are unlike anything their employees would expect to see in their W-2s.

Spoilers for "Killers of the Flower Moon" follow.
Martin Scorsese is the great American filmmaker of his generation — and I don't just mean in nationality. The American Dream underpins Scorsese's films, whether unfolding in his hometown of New York City or the Oklahoma plains like his latest, "Killers of the Flower Moon." Based on David Grann's non-fiction novel, the film is set in 1920s Osage County, Oklahoma. The indigenous Osage tribe came into wealth upon discovering oil on their land — so white settlers murdered them to steal it. While ringleaders William King Hale (Robert De Niro) and Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) were prosecuted, they avoided life in prison. Mollie Burkhart (Lily Gladstone), Ernest's wife and poisoning victim, dies at the age of 50 without her family, while the Osage's wealth dries up. It's hardly a victory for justice, even if the tribe refuses to be forgotten by history.

Sony’s chairman of global TV studios Ravi Ahuja warned that the end of the peak TV era will likely “be painful for most companies,” as cost-cutting measures across the industry leads to less shows and money spent on marketing.

Perhaps the highlight of "Ted Lasso" season 1 is watching Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) slowly come around to Ted's point of view. Although AFC Richmond was full of grumpy characters in desperate need of Ted's positive influence, the vengeful Rebecca needed him the most. Slowly but surely, the audience learned that she was not only capable of kindness, but was in fact a straightforwardly kind person once you got to know her.
The first season's seventh episode, "Make Rebecca Great Again," revealed that the Rebecca we've known this whole time hasn't been the "real" Rebecca. So far, we'd only met her in the middle of the darkest period of her life. Years of mistreatment from her ex-husband Rupert had turned her into the worst version of herself; the fact that the tabloids were clearly taking Rupert's side in the divorce only drove her further into her bitterness. "The real Rebecca is silly.

Viet Dinh, a key strategic and business leader at Fox Corp. and a longtime consiglieri in the Murdoch empire, is leaving his executive post in the wake of the Fox News settlement with Dominion Voting Systems.
Dinh will step down as Chief Legal and Policy Officer on December 31 and become a “special advisor” to the company, Fox said in a press release issued Friday after the close of trading.
Dinh came aboard 21st Century Fox in 2018 just before Disney acquired most of the company, leaving a clutch of TV-focused assets that took on the corporate name Fox Corp. Working closely with CEO Lachlan Murdoch, he played a significant role in guiding Fox’s path, handling all legal, compliance and regulatory matters as well as overseeing government affairs.

Viet Dinh, the influential chief legal officer of Fox Corp. who is believed to have played a significant role in the company’s failed legal strategy against a massive defamation suit filed against it by Dominion Voting Systems, is leaving his role at the media conglomerate at the end of the year.
He is expected to become a special advisor to the company effective December 31, 2023.
“We appreciate Viet’s many contributions and service to Fox as both a board member of 21st Century Fox and in his role over the last five years as a valued member of Fox’s leadership team,” said Lachlan Murdoch, Fox’s executive chairman and CEO, in a statement.
Dinh has long been perceived as having a role at Fox that is greater than his title. In January of 2021, then-New York Times media columnist Ben Smith called Dinh ”a kind of regent who mostly runs the company day-to-day.

A former Fox executive who served under Rupert Murdoch has emerged as an opponent of the network, arguing Fox News’ 2020 election coverage “undermined democracy” and lobbying for its broadcast licenses to be pulled.
As Murdoch was building the foundations of the Fox broadcast network in the 1990s, Preston Padden served as both chief lobbyist and organizer of Fox’s affiliated stations. He also helped to secure the regulatory waivers that allowed Fox’s growth, which made them competitive in the already saturated TV market.
After Padden left Fox in 1997, he and Murdoch remained in touch. “I’ve always admired Rupert’s vision and guts,” Padden said in an interview, describing him as a “father figure.”
Now, Padden is attempting to reverse course and convince federal regulators to strip Fox Corp.’s licenses to operate its TV stations.

Fox says that the First Amendment limits the FCC from considering whether its news coverage of Donald Trump’s false election claims should play a role in the license renewal of its Philadelphia station.
In a filing this week, Fox Television Station attorneys argued against a petition brought by the Media and Democracy Project, a challenge led in part by former Fox executive Preston Padden. The public interest group is seeking an evidentiary hearing on the license renewal of Wtxf-tv, or Fox 29 on the basis of that the company “lacks the character to remain a licensee.”
The Fox attorneys wrote that such a hearing “for the first time in history, have the Commission adjudicate a broadcast license renewal on the basis of cable network content, in violation of the First Amendment and the authority delegated to the Commission by Congress.” Despite the revelations from the Dominion defamation case, the Fox...

First Look, the works-in-progress strand of the Locarno film festival’s industry section, has revealed the six titles selected for its 2023 edition.
This year First Look will highlight independent projects from the UK. The festival has described each project as a work in progress “at the cusp of completion.” The selected works-in-progress, none of which currently have sales representation, will be presented to accredited industry professionals at the Cinema Rialto during the Locarno Film Festival.
Among the titles is All At Sea by the late filmmaker Mike Hodges. Produced by Solon Papadopoulos at Hurricane Films and directed, written, and narrated by Hodges, the pic explores Hodges’ story from his start in the Navy in the 1950s, to his work for Granada in the 1960s, through to his meteoric success with hits such as Get Carter and Flash Gordon in the 1970s onwards. Reflecting from his quiet Dorset home,...

Ron DeSantis’ campaign has let go of several staff members just two months into it hitting the campaign trail while it deals with bleeding cash in its effort to stave off Donald Trump’s lead for a Republican presidential nomination bid.
According to NBC News, in the campaign’s first six weeks, he had already hit all the top donors and bled through $7.9 million as a presidential candidate, according to the data the network analyzed from his campaign finance disclosure.
Beyond the cash woes, the staff shakeup included about a...

Less than two months into Ron DeSantis’ declared run for president, his most important backers in conservative media are already starting to lose faith.
Since the beginning of the Biden presidency, the powerful Murdoch family has favored the Florida governor in the 2024 presidential primary, largely due to a conviction that DeSantis would be a more electable, and less chaotic, evolution from Donald Trump. But in recent weeks, the Murdochs have grown increasingly displeased with the DeSantis campaign’s perceived stumbles, lackluster polling, and inability to swiftly dethrone Trump, multiple sources tell Rolling Stone.

Abortion rights took center stage at a rally Tuesday for striking film and television writers, who gathered with their supporters outside the New York City headquarters of Amazon on the first day of the retail and streaming giant’s “Prime Day” summer sale.
Linking abortion rights to labor rights, speakers said that film and TV workers in anti-abortion states are less protected today from pregnancy-related health emergencies than they were before the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v Wade last summer. That ruling turned abortion rights and restrictions into a state-by-state patchwork after the high court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
They also said production companies such as Amazon — which reimburses employee travel expenses for medical procedures including abortions — could be more vocal in their support of women’s reproductive freedom and medical care.

The news never stops, but for Jake Tapper, it does occasionally share time with other creative pursuits.
Today, what’s lured him away from the CNN studio (temporarily) is the promotion of his new book. He’s seated on the patio of The Pendry, a West Hollywood social club meets hotel, drinking the first of several iced coffees, dressed casually — comparatively speaking, for a person whose day job requires suits pressed within an inch of their life — in a breezy button-down shirt and Air Jordans. He arrived early for the breakfast interview, due in part to the habits of a longtime live news anchor, but also because he’s on East Coast time, rising hours before most of Los Angeles.
Tapper is releasing a third novel in his budding literary empire, which began with 2018’s The Hellfire Club, a political thriller that followed young Congressman Charlie Marder, and his wife,...
