It’s true! No, seriously: it’s true. And by “it” we of course mean the stories at the heart of Film Independent’s 2024 Doc Story Lab. A one-week intensive designed to provide support for filmmakers whose projects are in post-production, the Doc Story Lab is one of two Documentary Labs amid the larger Film Independent Artist Development umbrella of talent incubators, which for over 30 years have been the place to spot future media-visionary movers-and-shakers.

This Earth Day, the scientists in the documentary trailer “Fathom” are hoping they can learn to speak whale. And not like in the “Finding Nemo” sense.
“Fathom” shows a team of scientists using sound waves in an attempt to communicate with a pod of humpback whales. Whales, they explain, are a species that pre-date mankind by millions of years, and understanding the ways in which they communicate with each other deep beneath the surface of the ocean could reveal wonders.
“Studying whale culture might be more about glimpsing something about ourselves, how we can connect differently a million years from now,” one scientist says in the trailer.

A fateful day is re-examined by its survivors, whose stories are told via a brilliant narrative arrangement, and the use of animated recreations is only one aspect of it. The Texas tower shootings put our present, everyday reign of violent terror in a humanist context. It’s not exploitative — the killer’s name is barely mentioned. It works, it’s riveting, and its positive message is one of calm sanity. Highly recommended.

Earlier today, the 2016 Ifp Gotham Independent Film Award nominations were unveiled, officially kicking off the precursor season. Leading the charge was Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea, which score four nominations, more than any other title. Considering how this is a sturdy launching pad for Oscar hopefuls, it seems safe to say that the movie isn’t going anywhere. It appears poised to be a major Academy Award threat, including for Casey Affleck in Best Actor. Wins here will certainly go a long way, but right now, getting these nominations is an excellent start for the film, along with the other honorees. What you’ll see below is Manchester by the Sea competing with Certain Women, Everybody Wants Some, Moonlight, and Paterson in Best Feature. It’s also up for Best Screenplay against Hell or High Water, Love & Friendship, Moonlight, and Paterson, as well as in Best Actor for...

Kicking off the onslaught of awards this year, as always, is the Gotham Independent Film Awards, which celebrates its 26th anniversary. Usually a strong slate highlighting some of the year’s best films, 2016 is no different as Manchester by the Sea leads the pack with four nominations. Close behind is Moonlight (which will also pick up a special ensemble award) and Paterson with three each overall.
Rounding out the Best Feature line-up, along with the three aforementioned films, is Certain Women and Everybody Wants Some!!. As for the Best Documentary line-up, Cameraperson, I Am Not Your Negro, O.J.: Made in America, Tower, and Weiner all made the cut. With Krisha, The Witch, The Fits, Elle, Morris From America, Jackie, and more also getting nods, the list makes for the ideal what-to-watch-before-the-year-is-over rundown.

What have I been doing lately? I have been stalking Bryan Poyser (Lovers of Hate) on Facebook. Well, it is not technically stalking since he accepted my friendship, right? Truth be told, I am not actually a Facebook stalker, I am merely doing my job. (Really!) I am keeping tabs on the production of Poyser’s latest film, The Bounceback. As I write this, Poyser is entering week three of the Austin-based production which stars Ashley Bell (The Last Exorcism), Michael Stahl-David (Cloverfield), Sara Paxton (The Innkeepers), and Addison Timlin (Californication). The primary cast might not be very Austin-centric, but the crew – which includes producer Megan Gilbride, cinematographer Pj Raval, and editor Don Swaynos – certainly is. My love for Lovers of Hate and Dear Pillow knows no bounds, so let’s just say that I am eagerly awaiting the release of The Bounceback. Poyser is not the only Austin filmmaker lucky enough to be stalked by yours...

It is extremely rare that I commit to doing an interview with a director prior to watching their film, but Heather Courtney proved to be an exception to that rule. There are also very few directors whose work would prompt me to stay up until 3:30 Am on the opening night of SXSW just to watch a DVD screener of their newest film, but Courtney proved to be an exception to that rule as well. I based these decisions on my respect for Courtney’s previous work (Letters from the Other Side, Los Trabajadores) and the fact that she enlisted other talented local Austin filmmakers (producer Megan Gilbride, editor Kyle Henry) to work on Where Soldiers Come From with her. Smells Like Screen Spirit's chat with Courtney at the Austin Convention Center during SXSW 2011 could have very easily turned into a very uncomfortable affair if Where Soldiers Come From did...

(As soon as they took the stage, Dave Grohl announced “We’re movie stars now”).
“It’s been completely exciting to witness the overwhelming appreciation and acclaim for the 2011 SXSW Film lineup,” said Film Conference and Festival Producer Janet Pierson. “The unique combination creative talents from music,...

With all the "Black Swan" hoopla, am I the only one who thinks that the film, while well-made, is not deserving of all these hyper-crazed adulations? Portman was good, but I prefer Annette Bening's understated performance in "The Kids Are All Right." Or heck, Jennifer Lawrence's "Winter's Bone" performance could easily outdance Portman's delusional ballerina portrayal any day.
And "Winter's Bone," celebrating its true independent spirit, was virtually snubbed at last night's Independent Spirit Awards. Sure, the excellent supporting cast was honored with Dale Dickey winning Best Supporting Female and John Hawkes for Best Supporting Male, but the engaging and deeply haunting Debra Granik movie (with the most nominations totaling to seven nods) lost out to...you guessed it, Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan." (Check out my "Winter's Bone" movie review right here)
And yes, I do admire Aronofsky, I thought "The Wrestler" was one of his personal...

Their answers will be published on a daily basis throughout February.
When "Lovers of Hate" opens in New York at the reRun Gastropub Theater this Valentine's Day weekend beginning this evening, it is indicative of two things: one, the sick sense of humor of the theater's programmers since Bryan Poyser's comedy is anything but romantic and that Poyser is indeed quite worthy of the John Cassavetes Award at this year's Spirit Awards since "Lovers of Hate" is...

Natalie Portman is going to get a stiff competition from Jennifer Lawrence at 2011 Independent Spirit Awards. The nominees for the annual awards dedicated to independent filmmakers have been announced on Tuesday, November 30, and both actresses were unraveled to be among those up for Best Female Lead.
29-year-old Natalie received the nomination for her portrayal of a ballet dancer in "Black Swan", while 20-year-old Jennifer got her nod for her role as a teen on a desperate search to find her missing father in "Winter's Bone". Both of them were nominated along with Annette Bening, Greta Gerwig, Nicole Kidman and Michelle Williams.
In addition to Natalie's acting nom, her psychological thriller "Black Swan" has nabbed three other nods. Cool! "Winter's Bone" Dominates Independent Spirit Awards Nominations! See Complete List of Nominees
I'm so glad that "Winter's Bone" has been receiving all the accolades. I love this film when it was shown in limited release last summer. The backwoods drama won big at the Gothams Awards winning Best Feature and Best Ensemble, and now, it dominated the Independent Spirit Awards with seven nominations including Best Feature, Director for Debra Granik, Screenplay for Granik and Anne Rosellini, Female Lead for Jennifer Lawrence, Supporting Female for Dale Dickey, Supporting Male for John Hawkes, and Cinematography for Michael McDonough. ("Winter's Bone" Movie Review)
"Winter's Bone" will compete against "127 Hours," "Black Swan," "Greenberg" and "The Kids Are All Right" for best picture.

Historically the Spirit Awards tend to honor a few of the major Oscar players each year but a win at the Spirits can sometimesLe be the last hurrah, a consolation prize as some would say, if the work is too "edgy" for lack of a less exhaustively employed word. Last year's big winner was Precious (refresh your memory?) It took home Picture, Director, Actress, Supporting Actress and Adapted Screenplay. There were only three crossover winners from Spirits to Oscars last year : Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), Mo'Nique (Precious) and the screenplay for Precious. (The Hurt Locker was considered a 2008 film.)
So what fared well this year? Black Swan got four nods including Best Actress for "sweet girl" Natalie Portman. But it could peak at the right time. Full list after the jump with Winter's Bone (7) and The Kids Are All Right (5) leading the pack.
Eva Mendes and Jeremy Renner announced the nominees.
