A version of this story about Hannah Beachler and Ruth E. Carter appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Oscar magazine.
When it was released last year, “Black Panther” earned worldwide acclaim for assembling the most talented cast of black actors ever seen in a blockbuster. It was hailed as a game-changer for Hollywood diversity, and the trend-setting on Ryan Coogler’s Marvel film was being made behind the camera as well.
“It felt like the next phase in inclusiveness, having not just people of color in charge of departments but women of color,” said costume designer Ruth E. Carter, who with her third nomination is now tied with Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer as the most-nominated African-American woman in Oscar history. (Her previous nods came for 1992’s “Malcolm X” and 1997’s “Amistad.”)
“Sometimes it’s hard to change people’s mindset,” Carter said. “Women still...

“We know each other – he’s a friend from work!”
While he’s due to receive a significant upgrade in time for Avengers 4, Thor: Ragnarok, Taika Waititi’s wacky McU threequel, was all about chronicling the Hulk’s journey from deep-space drifter to the champion of Sakaar, the junk planet on which Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder is forced to do battle against an old friend… from work.
It’s arguably the film’s true centerpiece, as we see Marvel’s strongest characters duke it out for the first time since their brief squabble in The Avengers. And though Thor struggles to admit it, Hulk actually emerged victorious, no thanks to that awesome gladiator armor.
The actual design of said battle suit evolved quite dramatically throughout development, though, as this newly-revealed piece of concept art attests to:

Over Thanksgiving, while many of us were gathering with our families, we were also given a little treat. Anthony Francisco posted on Instagram showing concept art for much more colorful versions of Loki’s costume for Thor: Ragnarok. Personally, I really like the color schemes going on. Most of them are different from his black, green, and gold and I welcome the change. According to Francisco, he was asked to, “go as bold and colorful as we could.” I believe he accomplished it without going ridiculous and my favorite is the blue and orange one. Which costume do you prefer?
Happy Thanksgiving everyone !! Designing #loki costume for #thorragnarok was a fun challenge . We were asked to go as bold and colorful as we could. Channeling Jack Kirby hopefully. I did a bunch of these color variations. Do you guys wanna see them all? It's a lot of misses tho :...

A couple new pieces of concept art have surfaced that were created for James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The first piece above features a pre-teen version of Groot listening to music and playing video games. The art was created and posted by artist Anthony Francisco. The piece below is of Howard The Duck, which came from artist Ryan Lang. Both pieces are featured in the art book that was released for the film.
It was a fun unexpected surprise to see both a pre-teen Groot and Howard the Duck in the film. I doubt we'll ever see a Howard the Duck solo movie again, but I'm confident we haven't seen the last of him in the McU. ...

There’s no denying that Baby Groot stole the show in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but one of the sequel’s best surprises came when Adolescent Groot made an unexpected appearance in one of the five post-credit scenes.
With four years set to pass between the events of Vol. 2 and Avengers: Infinity War, we probably won’t get to see Groot in that form again, but it’s going to be interesting to watch how the sentient tree develops from here, as there really are any number of directions that James Gunn can take the hero in.
The design process for Groot in this movie is equally as fascinating, and that’s something made clear by Anthony Francisco, one of the designers at Marvel Studios Visual Development responsible for his new looks.

Our first glimpse of Charlie Cox suited up in his red Daredevil costume drew a mixed response from fans, but after seeing him in action in the final episode of the brilliant Netflix series they seemed to warm to it for the most part. The Man Without Fear may well sport a different look again when he returns for his second season, but until then we have a look at some awesome concept art from Marvel's go-to poster/concept designer Ryan Meinerding, who worked with the likes of Rodney Fuentebella, Andy Park, Joe Quesada, Jackson Sze, Josh Nizzi, and Anthony Francisco to come up with outfit that suited the "grounded, street-level tone of the series." “The tone that was really communicated was the sense of realism that they were going for,” Meinerding relates to Marvel.com. “I think the way that [manifested itself in] the costume was through the armor and making it...

Not everyone was happy with the new designs for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but I’m pretty sure after you take a look at what could have been, you’ll be content with what we got. A number of unused Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles designs have leaked from the Michael Bay-produced reboot, which show very strange, ugly, and downright creepy concepts.
First we have unused Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles designs created by Anthony Francisco which look a lot like aliens you might say. If you remember when some early scripts leaked from the film suggesting the Tmnt were aliens, people were outraged.
Unused Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Designs:
Next are some concept art designs created by Kelton Cram (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) which are pretty close to the finished product, but still very different from what we have seen before.

From the first appearance of the rebooted Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, fans were outraged about how Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael and Leonardo had been redesigned. Gone were the slender, shelled surfer dudes of the 1990s incarnation. In their place stood hulking CGI monstrosities with meaty lips and a barrage of knickknacks cluttering their costumes. But the heroes on half-shell could have looked radically different. On his Facebook page, Anthony Francisco shared some concept art that he pitched to Platinum Dunes in 2011. Back then, Michael Bay's production company was shopping for a shop to bring the rebooted turtles to life. Francisco contributed to the designs for Illusion Industries,...

In an attempt to reinvent the characters for this generation, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles gives us a Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michaelangelo who seem fit for a modern era of grittier comic book movies. In fact, they're almost too ugly in the hit new movie, which pulled in another $17 million over the weekend. But it could have been worse. As we saw earlier this month in a gallery of early concept art, there was an alternate design where they looked even less cartoonish. Now, via Cbm once again, we've gotten ahold of more early art, this time for a design by Anthony Francisco (Spider-Man) that makes the foursome look like aliens, as in the conventional "grey" extraterrestrials we've seen in everything from Close Encounters of the Third Kind to...

Shortly after Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hit theaters a few weeks ago, and hitting the box office so hard that they're already guaranteed a sequel coming in 2016, some rejected concept art for the new designs of the turtles surfaced showing that things could have been much worse. The new designs still ended up causing some grief amongst fans, but again, we'd like to show you how terrible some of the other designs were so we can be somewhat grateful for the final character design. Some new rejected concept art has surfaced from Anthony Francisco (who worked on Guardians of the Galaxy) and their designs are just weird, making them look almost like traditional aliens with shells, ready to eat children on pizza. The special effects makeup studio that Martin worked for wanted to work on the project. So, Anthony lent his artistic talent to help design some pitch art for Illusion Industries. How close did they come? Well, Anthony says, "We did get a chance to meet with the producers and the meeting went well but we did not get the gig." As you can see below, these designs are quite a departure from the traditional look of the Turtles that fans have grown fond of. Anthony gave them smaller shells so that their ninja-like moves would be more fluent. Though, they could've been...

Off the spectacular Danger Mouse-Daniele Luppi album Rome, one of our favorite underplayed tracks of 2011, "Two Against One" -- sung by Jack White -- now has an animation to go with it. NPR premiered the "equally dark and tortured" music video Saturday, with a promise from director Chris Milk of a future feature-length film based on Rome:
"Myself, Brian (aka Danger Mouse), and the producers Anthony Bregman (Eternal Sunshine) and Megan Ellison (True Grit), are currently developing the Rome project into a theatrical feature film. While the video for "Two Against One" is hand-drawn cell animation, the film would be live action. The music video is essentially the fever dream of the antagonist of the story. It's mostly his backstory, his life before the tale we see in the movie. If you have a fast computer with Chrome installed you can also see the interactive lucid dream of the protagonist at www.
