Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid is back at the helm for the sequel Mortal Kombat 2, which recently wrapped production after a bumpy ride through the year of the strikes. This film will be bringing popular video game character Johnny Cage to the screen, with Karl Urban of Dredd, Star Trek, and The Boys taking on the role. Despite Urban’s established awesomeness, he was an unexpected choice for Johnny Cage, and there are some fans who have let it be known that they would have chosen someone else to play the part. We’ll have to wait and see how it turned out, but one thing we know right now is that Urban had a great time working on the movie, calling it “most action packed fun I’ve ever had on a film!”

The highest-grossing movie of 2023 was directed by a woman – but equal opportunity for women behind the camera is as elusive as ever, caution San Diego State’s Martha Lauzen and Annenberg Inclusion Initiative’s Stacy L. Smith.
The academics’ latest respective industry progress reports pour cold water on any premature celebrations prompted by the high-profile successes of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, the year’s top box office performer, and of Celine Song’s Past Lives, which received the highest Metacritic score.
While Annenberg’s “Inclusion in the Director’s Chair” surveys the 100 top-grossing movies annually and the Sdsu Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film’s “The Celluloid Ceiling” additionally widens the aperture to the top 250 releases, both conclude that women consistently account for a slim minority of directors working each year. (The two reports’ exact numbers differ slightly: Among the top 100 films of 2023, Annenberg calculated that women represented 12.1 percent of helmers,...

Launching in the first year of the pandemic in 2020, Taiwan Creative Content Fest (Tccf) has taken a few years to secure its positioning in the global film markets calendar, but this year’s edition is on track to be its biggest and most international yet.
The event, which runs November 7-12 at Songshan Cultural and Creative Park in Taipei, is divided into three sections – Pitching, which has opened to international projects for the first time (see separate story for more details); Market, which has been extended from three to four days and has around 100 companies attending; and Innovation, which explores the intersection between content and technology.
Taiwan’s content industries suffered less than some of their neighbours during the pandemic, as being an island, the borders could be quickly closed, limiting the spread of Covid-19. For most of the past three years, shooting on film and TV projects has continued and cinemas remained open.

Raunch-coms live or die by their ability to make you go “Oh my god!” or “Ewwww!” or do a spit-take that spews popcorn over whoever is unlucky enough to be sitting in front of you. The new movie Joy Ride, a riotously funny comedy about a group of four Asian-American pals — Audrey (Ashley Park of Emily in Paris), Kat (Stephanie Hsu, Oscar-nominated star of Everything Everywhere All at Once), Lolo (Sherry Cola), and Deadeye (Sabrina Wu) — who head to China to try to help Audrey close a business deal (and find her birth mother), was originally titled Joy Fuck Club. It served as a recognition of those that came before them in the Asian cinema canon, but also a reminder of just how gleefully chaotic this road-trip adventure is.

Someone didn’t get the memo. Once Joy Ride began, the raunchy, wild and crazy, completely unfiltered hard R-rated comedy confirmed the mom’s decision was spot on. For the rest of us adults in the theater, what followed the opening minutes also confirmed Joy Ride is the best R-rated female-led comedy – and one of...

The tone of Crazy Rich Asians co-screenwriter Adele Lim’s directorial debut, Joy Ride, is more accurately conveyed by its working title, The Joy Fuck Club. The film falls squarely in the recent tradition of “women behaving badly” comedies like Paul Feig’s Bridesmaids and Malcolm D. Lee’s Girls Trip, with a handful of gut-busting, outrageous comic set pieces that push the boundaries of good taste. But alongside all the coke-fueled, outlandish sexual escapades and vagina tattoo jokes that allow Joy Ride’s four leads to smash the stereotype of the quiet, submissive Asian woman, we also get a heartfelt, if sometimes clunky, tale of cultural heritage and belonging that heads in surprising, and surprisingly complicated, directions.
The film initially follows Audrey (Ashley Park) and Lolo (Sherry Cola), childhood best friends who were also the only two Asian kids in White Falls, Washington. An early flashback neatly establishes their...

Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid is returning to the helm for the sequel that we’ll refer to as Mortal Kombat 2 until someone tells us otherwise. Filming on this follow-up is expected to begin soon (unless the writers strike causes a delay), and over the last month and a half McQuoid has been steadily building up his cast. The Boys star Karl Urban has been cast to play Johnny Cage; Adeline Rudolph (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) is set to play Princess Kitana; and Tati Gabrielle (You) is taking on the role of Jade, the friend and bodyguard of Princess Kitana. Now Deadline reports that four more actors have joined the cast, filling the roles of Outworld emperor Shao Kahn, Kahn’s wife Queen Sindel, Netherrealm demon Quan Chi, and Jerrod, who was the King of Edenia (and married to Sindel) until Edenia’s warriors lost in the Mortal Kombat tournament.

Editor’s note: This story was published prior to the decision to cancel the live awards show and air a pre-taped ceremony instead.
In a development that will surely cause chaos before the ceremony, the Writers Guild of America is planning on picketing Sunday’s MTV Movie & TV Awards.
The Hollywood writers union announced its intentions to demonstrate at the Sunday ceremony at Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar on Friday afternoon as part of its ongoing strike against Hollywood studios and streamers. (MTV is part of Paramount Global.) The protest is clearly a targeted move, since the guild’s strike schedule is primarily Monday through Friday at production locations including studio lots and corporate offices like Netflix’s building in Hollywood.

As Asian Pacific American Heritage Month kicks off, Gold House has unveiled this year’s A100, the Api leadership coalition’s sixth annual list of the Asian Pacific leaders who have most significantly impacted American culture and society in the last year.
Among the five categories included in the list — activism and journalism; business and technology; entertainment and media; lifestyle and fashion; and sports and gaming — one person tops each category as an overall A1 (maximum impact).
“Gold House’s A100 List is a vital representation of the diverse opportunities and achievements of and for Asian Pacific leaders,” said Michelle Yeoh, a Gold House A100 Hall of Famer and inaugural Gold Gala Honoree last year. “Becoming begins with seeing — and it shows how we’re just getting started. I’m so proud to be part of past classes and applaud this year’s class.”

There’s always been an impressive roster of top stars and filmmakers at CinemaCon except during the pandemic era. This year’s edition, however, was next-level — Oprah, Christopher Nolan, Rihanna, Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, among others.
Yet perhaps the biggest star of the four-day show in Las Vegas was optimism.
After worrisome fits and starts, the box office recovery is finally showing signs of sustained good health. Universal and Illumination’s The Super Bros. Mario Movie crossed the $1 billion mark globally on April 30, while fellow 2023 releases Scream VI, Creed III and John Wick: Chapter Four have also done stellar business. And the summer season kicks off next week with James Gunn’s third and final Guardians of the Galaxy superhero pic, followed by Fast X and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, just to name just a few. Fox Entertainment has greenlit “Rescue: Hi-Surf,” a Hawaiian lifeguard drama from “Shameless” producer John Wells and “Outsiders” writer Matt Kester. The series will be co-produced by Warner Bros. Television and is set to debut sometime in the 2023-2024 season.
According to the official synopsis from Fox, “‘Rescue: Hi Surf’ is an action-packed drama that follows the personal and professional lives of the heavy-water lifeguards who patrol and protect the North Shore of O’ahu—the most famous and dangerous stretch of coastline in the world.”
“Each episode will feature these dedicated, heroic, and adrenaline-seeking first-responders saving lives in the difficult and often life-threatening conditions of Hawaii’s Seven Mile Miracle.” Kester will write the first episode with Wells directing the first two episodes.
“I’ve lived on the North Shore of O‘ahu for most of my life, and these are our heroes, the most extraordinary extreme athletes anywhere,” said Kester.

Adele Lim’s debut film Joy Ride will make you cry your eyes out, in addition to showing the audience that women know how to party hard.
Written by Cherry Chevapravatdumrong & Teresa Hsiao, the film stars Ashley Park, Stephanie Hsu, Sherry Cola and Sabrina Wu as four friends on a global adventure of self-discovery — but also drugs, sex and comedy. I expected nothing less from a movie that was originally titled Joy F**k Club, which I find hilarious.
Audrey (Park) is an adoptee growing up in an all-white household, and Lolo’s (Cola) parents just moved from China. Their friendship starts on the playground when Audrey is approached by a bully and Lolo punches him in the face.

Chicago – The career of comedian Bobcat Goldthwait is a wild roller coaster of hilarity and passion, so it stands to reason that his latest film is called “Joy Ride.” The film, one of the funniest stand up docs you’ll ever see, also features Bobcat’s comedy partner Dana Gould on a stand up tour right before the pandemic. It’s available through VOD and iTunes, click Joy Ride for details.
“Joy Ride” is essentially a stand-up comedy tour documentary, because it is rooted in the career overviews of Bobcat and Dana. Both men have had trials and tribulations in show business, based on backgrounds that included difficulties in their youth. These situations become their comedy in the film, with Gould especially opening up on a complete meltdown in the 1990s. The Bobcat past highlights are especially telling, and has precipitated a long running feud between the comic and his fellow traveler Jerry Seinfeld.

Joy Ride Review: Bobcat Goldthwait and Dana Gould Take On The South in Engaging Stand-Up Documentary
Bobcat Goldthwait has made a career of dissecting what makes tragedy funny. It’s an impressive second act for the comedian, who was once known primarily for that voice (you know the one) and that character (Zed) from that comedy franchise (Police Academy). Joy Ride, directed by Goldthwait, who co-stars with Dana Gould, documents the duo as they travel across the American South discussing everything from their strange friendship, their similar upbringings, and the severe hypocrisies of conservatism.
At the top, the comedians acknowledge the serious car accident that stunted the beginning of the documentary. It left both with injuries, Goldthwait even sustaining a concussion for his trouble. But no matter, just another piece of solid material on stage. At a breezy 70 minutes, Goldthwait and Gould make an immensely watchable pair. “I didn’t know you were crazier then me?” Goldthwait says of Gould at one point. “Oh yeah,” Gould confidently responds.

Stealth, Hollywood's latest virtual movie, features impressive action sequences -- all created through technology -- a thin story, cardboard characters and snicker-inducing dialogue. The film thus follows the inevitable equation: The greater the reliance on technology, the less human and therefore the less engaging the story.
Stealth, directed by XXX's Rob Cohen, targets the young male audience with a full payload of high-octane action, macho posturing, impressive military hardware and an old-fashioned cheesecake. This is a reliable demographic for a solid opening weekend. The real question is the film's staying power for the second weekend. Here the Columbia release might be vulnerable.
Funnily enough, the problem with the movie -- that it's a virtual movie with only cursory human interaction -- also is its subject: For the U.S. Navy of the "near future" is looking to replace human pilots with artificial intelligence-based drones.
As the movie gets under way, only three Navy pilots are excellent enough to fly its latest stealth fighter jet: Ben (Josh Lucas), Kara (Jessica Biel) and Henry (Jamie Foxx). Their commanding officer, Capt. Cummings (Sam Shepard), seemingly without any military superior of his own, has enough juice to ram through Congress and the Pentagon a pilotless aircraft that he insists will be the "new wingman" for our Terrific Trio.
The thing is called an Extreme Deep Invader or EDI, which everyone pronounces as Eddy when they are not calling the plane Tin Man. It does have a male voice, not unlike HAL's in 2001: A Space Odyssey, so you know what Ben means when he says, "I've got a bad feeling about that plane."
Rushed into action ahead of schedule, the drone watches -- and learns -- when Ben overrides his commander's orders and successfully destroys a target swarming with terrorists in downtown Rangoon without any collateral damage. (You do believe that, don't you?) Returning to the aircraft carrier, Eddy gets hit by lightning, goes haywire, nearly crashes, arrives in sick bay in bad shape -- and Capt. Cummings immediately clears him for duty.
(Essentially, Shepard is reprieving his Black Hawk Down role of the commander who receives bad news in a remote operation center, only this time with the sinister overlay. It seems that a rogue element within the military-industrial complex is determined to promote the invention of a wacky scientist with the James Bondian name of Dr. Orbit.)
Before Eddy returns to action, however, the movie indulges in a Thai Swimsuit Special, where the pilots repair to Thailand to strip down to beachwear so audiences can admire the buff bodies of Lucas and Biel. You also learn that the two pilots have developed romantic feelings for each other.
Back in clothes, the pilots fly off to a mission near the Pakistani border, where Eddy goes bananas. Having learned from Ben that orders are a sometime thing, Eddy ignores a command and creates a potential nuclear disaster. Then Eddy decides to continue the Joy Ride up to Siberia to launch World War III.
The nonstop action from this point does yield exciting dogfights and aerial gymnastics. The film marries two different technologies, namely Tergen (for terrain generator), developed by Digital Domain, which can create virtual backgrounds; and a special gimbal, a device that allows the mock jets to incline at different angles in all directions.
There also is an intriguing second-act twist in W.D. Richter's screenplay, in which Ben engages Eddy in a midair conference and talks him over to the side of the good guys. More excitement is then generated by Eddy and Ben's rescue of Kara, who has ejected over North Korea.
The movie never really establishes any compelling reason for the Navy to want to remove pilots from combat, and the illogic compounds itself from that point. The movie does deliver the video game goods but strands its characters in a no-man's-land of crude characterizations and silly dialogue.
The actors can do little to elevate these roles. Lucas displays bravery and guile, Biel resiliency and a sweet smile, while Foxx has the misfortunate to follow a truly great acting year with a role that numbs his usual exuberance.
Technical credits are where the real action is, especially the sleek design of the hypersonic fighters and cinematographer Dean Semler's excellent blending of the virtual movie with locations in Australia, Thailand and New Zealand.
