At the 2018 Oscars, Frances McDormand, who’d just won her second Best Actress Academy Award for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” asked all the female nominees to stand. Ten women will always be nominated by the academy: five for Best Actress and another five for Best Supporting Actress. Besides these other nine women, how many others were on their feet in the Dolby Theater?
Forty-seven women other than actresses were nominated for those 90th Academy Awards. Of these, only four won Oscars. By comparison, 151 men other than actors were nominated and 32 took home statuettes. Of the 20 non-gender specific categories, women were contenders in 17 of them; they were shut out of Original Score (5 men), Sound Editing (9 men) and Visual Effects (20 men).
At last year’s Academy Awards, 53 women other than actresses were nominated as were 159 men. Women make up 25% of the nominees in the non-gender specific categories compared to 23.73% in 2018. Thirteen...

The new members are drawn from a mix of individuals applying directly and those who were invited. In both cases they have to pass strict vetting and fulfill eligibility criteria. At this year’s Academy Awards, 15 women won while 36 men (some multiple times) made their way to the stage of the Dolby Theater (these figures include the two men and two women are always guaranteed to win the acting awards). That marks a big increase from last year when the gender gap saw just 6 women winners versus 34 men. Scroll down to see the names of the 13 women who won at the 2019 Oscars besides actresses Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) and Regina King (“If Beale Street Could Talk”).
This year, 53 women other than actresses were nominated at the 91st Academy Awards. With 159 men in contention, this meant that women make up 25% of the nominees in the non-gender specific categories (there will always be 10 women and 10 men nominated for the acting awards). At last year’s Oscars women represented 23.73% of the nominees in the 20 non-gender specific categories. Forty-seven women numbered among the contenders in those 17 races.

Alice Felton and Fiona Crombie, the set decorator and production designer on Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite,” are best friends. Felton describes their relationship as ‘telepathic,’ wherein they’ll often pick the same color or fabric or design element without knowing the other’s opinion first. And it’s this friendship which, Felton says, has made the mayhem of awards season all the more wonderful.
“To win a BAFTA, especially with Fiona, means so much. I feel so privileged and it was one of the best nights of my life, for sure! I’m so pleased Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz, won, too!” She and Crombie also shared in wins at the Art Director Guild Awards and the British Independent Film Awards

Alice Felton and her best friend Fiona Crombie, the set decorator and production designer for “The Favourite,” have already won the BAFTA, Art Directors Guild and Bifa awards for their work on Yorgos Lanthimos‘ acclaimed historical drama. And they are the frontrunners to win Best Production Design at the Oscars on Feb. 24.
Reflecting on all of this attention from awards bodies, Felton readily admits, “The relationship you get with the other nominees is my favorite part of everything.” As she explains, “we did the BAFTA sessions discussing movies and it was so lovely hearing them talk about their films and their process, so that’s been one of my highlights. It’s been fascinating!”
For Felton, the recognition from her guild was beyond anything she could have hoped for. “I loved being there because I met so many great set decorators and production designers who I would never meet. It was a community of designers.

The production designers of “The Favourite,” Fiona Crombie and Alice Felton, who just won their first BAFTAs, are best friends. As the explained in our backstage interview, they met making “Macbeth” (2015) and now live minutes away from each other in London. “The whole thing has been so much better for doing it with Alice,” says Crombie. “We spend our whole time just living our best lives – being mums on tour! We’ve been in La and – you know, there are some stories.”
Sadly, neither Crombie nor Felton would divulge on any particulars, but they did comment on how much they loved working on a film with so many women and, even more so, other mums. “I’ve got three kids,” says Felton. “Fiona has two, Olivia [Colman] has kids, Rachel [Weisz] has just had her second – it was so great for all of us mums to be working together on such a great film.

Fiona Crombie.
Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite won seven prizes at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ awards in London on Sunday, including original screenplay for Tony McNamara and Deborah Davis and production design for Fiona Crombie and Alice Felton.
So the momentum builds for all four, who have been nominated in their respective categories at the Academy Awards.
Crombie’s work on The Favourite had already been recognised as it was named best period film at the Art Directors Guild’s Excellence in Production Design Awards in Los Angeles.
In the past five years, the winner of the Adg’s period film category went on to win the Oscar in production design three times: The Great Gatsby (2014), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2025) and The Shape of Water (2018), which also won best picture.

Moments ago, we saw one of the final dominos in the precursor season tumble. Yes, the 72nd British Academy Film Awards were held, with the winners staking their claim to potential Oscar glory. BAFTA has long held major sway with the Academy Awards, so what voters in the former do, members of the latter keep in mind. That should again be the case this year, though there weren’t a whole lot of surprises to be found. BAFTA voters embraced the things we expected them to, for better or worse. Now, it’s just a matter of figuring out if they’re on the money or not, which is what I’ll be doing next… BAFTA gave the most awards to The Favourite, with seven in total, including Olivia Colman in Best Actress, Rachel Weisz in Best Supporting Actress, and the duo of Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara in Best Original Screenplay.

Fox Searchlight’s The Favourite, which led all nominees going in with 12, won a leading seven trophies as the two films with the most Oscar nominations this year duked it out on at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Production designer Fiona Crombie and set decorator Alice Felton reaped their first-ever Oscar nominations for their work on Yorgos Lanthimos‘ “The Favourite.” The film is set in the 18th century court of Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) who is too frail to rule and relies on Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) to govern the country. A new servant, Abigail (Emma Stone), arrives and immediately charms the Queen, much to Sarah’s consternation.
“It was so evident from the script that the tone was going to be something quite different,” says Crombie. “It wasn’t your classic biopic or anything like that. It was immediately playful, immediately anachronistic,” which allowed for “a freedom” when it came to designing the lavish sets.
Crombie and Felton met when they worked together on 2015’s “Macbeth.” She is particularly delighted to share this entire “insane” experience with Felton, “who is one of my very best friends To...

Screenwriter Tony McNamara and production designer Fiona Crombie have scored their first Academy Award nominations for director Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite.
McNamara and co-writer Deborah Davis are in contention for best original screenplay while Crombie is nominated for best production design, shared with her colleague Alice Felton for set decoration.
Fox Searchlight’s The Favorite and Netflix’s Roma lead the field with 10 nominations apiece, followed by Warner Bros’ A Star Is Born and Annapurna Pictures’ Vice with eight.
Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther scored seven, although not for director Ryan Coogler, and Focus Features’ BlacKkKlansman got six.
The contenders for best picture are Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, Roma, A Star is Born and Vice.
Advocates for gender equality will be incensed about the total absence of nominations for female directors, cinematographers, film editors, composers and visual effects artists.

At last year’s Oscars women represented 23.73% of the nominees in the 20 non-gender specific categories. Forty-seven women numbered among the contenders in 17 races. They were shut out of Original Score (5 men), Sound Editing (9 men) and Visual Effects (20 men). By comparison, 151 men other than actors were nominated. Four women won Oscars as did 32 men.
This year, 53 women other than actresses are nominated at the 91st Academy Awards. With 159 men in contention, this means that women make up 25% of the nominees in the non-gender specific categories. This uptick came despite women being shut out of five races this year.
Besides score (5 men again) and visual effects (20 men again), women are not represented in Best Director (5 men), Cinematography (5 men) and Film Editing (5 men).

The Favourite‘s Fiona Crombie and Alice Felton received their first Oscar nominations this morning — and one of 10 -for the period comedy — for Best Production Design. The two women who meticulously designed the sets, which were as impressive as the acting, have been working for years as a team and are currently in production on their fourth film together with David Michôd’s The King, scheduled for release in 2019. The two were also nominated for a BAFTA in the same category.

Every year, it seems as if films just get better and better, with actors, actresses, directors, and crewmembers raising the bar to extraordinary new heights. For over 90 years, the Academy Awards has been the main source of accommodating those achievements with their illustrious golden statue and the prestige of being known as an "Academy Award-winner". The awards shows will continue until morale improves. Next up in the season that never truly ends are the Critics’ Choice Awards, which air on The CW tonight at 7:00 p.m. Est. Taye Diggs is hosting the ceremony, which takes place at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica and is presented by the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association. “The Favourite” leads all films with 14 nominations, followed by fellow Best Picture nominee “Black Panther.” So how to watch the ceremony if you don’t have cable?
It may be a little tricky. You can use an over-the-air antenna on the off chance that you have one (and The CW’s website has information on how to find your local channel), or you can use YouTube TV, Hulu With Live TV, or DirecTV Now. If none of those work for you, worry not: IndieWire will be...

Get ready to see a whole lot of Alfonso Cuaron at the Critics’ Choice Awards Sunday night. “Roma” is expected to top the ceremony with five wins, which would bring Cuaron to the stage all five times. The eight-time nominated film is favored in Best Picture, Best Director (Cuaron), Best Foreign Language Film, Best Cinematography (Cuaron) and Best Editing (Cuaron and Adam Gough). (See Gold Derby’s racetrack odds.) So, yeah, Cuaron would have a literal handful of trophies by the end of the night.
“The Favourite” leads the field with 14 nominations, but it’s only predicted to score four awards in the 19 categories we’re predicting (there are 25 categories total): Best Original Screenplay (Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara), Best Film Ensemble, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. If it does win ensemble, “The Favourite” would be the first Critics’ Choice champ to not have a corresponding Screen Actors Guild Award nomination.

Fox Searchlight’s “The Favourite,” directed by rising art-house star Yorgos Lanthimos, led the field of film nominees for the 24th annual Critics’ Choice Awards, the Broadcast Film Critics Assn. announced Monday. The period comedy, a biting send-up of the court of Queen Anne, received 14 nominations including best picture, director, actress (Olivia Colman), supporting actress (Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz), best comedy and a host of craft category mentions.
A few paces behind was Disney’s “Black Panther” with 12 nominations and Universal’s “First Man” with 10. Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” Warner Bros.’ “A Star Is Born” and Annapurna’s “Vice” each earned nine nominations. Netflix’s “Roma” scored eight nominations while Universal’s “Green Book” picked up seven.
Those films joined Focus’ “BlacKkKlansman” and Annapurna’s “If Beale Street Could Talk” in the best picture field, historically a prognosticative snapshot of the motion picture Academy’s ultimate lineup.
