Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell are not in the mood to share their wedding venue in the first trailer for the comedy feature You’re Cordially Invited.
Amazon released the promo Tuesday for director Nicholas Stoller’s movie that is set to begin streaming via Prime Video on Jan. 30, 2025. The film centers on a father (Ferrell) who learns that the venue for his daughter’s nuptials has been double-booked by a different bride and her wedding-planner sister (Witherspoon). Geraldine Viswanathan, Meredith Hagner and Jimmy Tatro round out the cast.
“Let’s get something straight,” Ferrell warns Witherspoon in the trailer. “If I look out on that dock, and that bride’s not my baby girl, that bride’s going in the fucking lake.”
Witherspoon responds, “I’m gonna kick your ass, and it’s going to be embarrassing because you’re big, and I’m little.”

A woman seemingly plans her sister’s perfect destination wedding but her and the father of a different young bride-to-be find out that they are double booked at a remote resort on an island off the Georgia coast. When both parties decide to share the small venue, chaos ensues and disaster awaits.

Exclusive: Kevin Alves (Yellowjackets) has landed a recurring role in Netflix’s eight-episode comedy series No Good Deed from creator Liz Feldman (Dead to Me), Deadline has learned.
The actor plays Nate, the strait-laced, hard-edged son of Mikey (Denis Leary), with whom he has a strained relationship. As previously announced, Ray Romano and Lisa Kudrow lead the cast, which also includes Linda Cardellini, Luke Wilson, Abbi Jacobson, Poppy Liu, Leary and O-t Fagbenle.
No Good Deed is a half-hour, dark comedy that follows three very different families vying to buy the very same 1920s Spanish-style villa that they think will solve all their problems. But as the sellers have already discovered, sometimes the home of your dreams can be a total nightmare.
Feldman serves as showrunner and executive produces alongside Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum for Gloria Sanchez Productions, Christie Smith, and Silver Tree, who will direct the pilot and additional episodes.

This year’s Film Independent Spirit Awards stayed ahead of the Oscar curve once more, announcing their winners on Sunday, February 25 in the usual chilly white tent on the Santa Monica beach (and on YouTube). With Oscar voting not over until the evening of February 27, the winners at the 39th Spirits could gain valuable Oscar momentum.

They take turns talking about all the obstacles they have to go through to make a production happen, like directors asking for a Black Hawk but not specifying if they meant the helicopter or the bird. Wilson says he ended up booking both.

The last of the Sundance buzz titles has landed. Netflix closed an 8-figure deal for Will & Harper, the documentary in which Will Ferrell takes a road trip with his lifelong pal Harper Steele after the latter transitioned. Sources said deal was 8-figures.
In the Josh Greenbaum-directed docu, Ferrell finds out his close friend of three decades came out as a trans woman. Steele is a longtime comedy writer who helped Ferrell gain the confidence for his outlandish comedy on SNL and film comedy hits. All this was completely new territory for Ferrell, as it is for many people who believe in tolerance but just don’t understand. What a great opportunity to have the amiable Ferrell take a cross country road trip with his buddy, and ask every question and process this new stage of their relationship in a portrait of friendship, transition and America.

Will Ferrell and longtime friend Harper Steele discussed the origins of their road-trip documentary Will & Harper at The Hollywood Reporter’s studio during the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.
Ferrell and Steele have been best friends for 30 years and worked together at Saturday Night Live when they were both launching their Hollywood careers in comedy. Their new film documents the pair taking a cross-country road trip together following Steele coming out as a trans woman.
“The conception of the whole discussion, for some reason in my head, was a documentary,” Ferrell said. “Of course, I made it clear to Harper, ‘I don’t want to exploit our friendship, but this could, I think, be just a wonderful way for us to explore this topic. Obviously, for me to learn, ask all the questions that I have about what you’re going through and who you are, have you changed?'”

But it does feature elements of both, in a deceptively dark story that harks back to the days of Hollywood’s self-imposed censorship code, when ingenious directors found sensitive and intelligent ways to address taboo subjects in mainstream movies. Here, the inspiration is the real-life case of Mary Kay Letourneau, a 35-year-old married teacher who, in 1997, seduced a pupil and was sentenced to prison for it, twice. A year after her release in 2004, claiming their love was “eternal and endless”, Letourneau married the boy, then 21. That wedding, and their subsequent life together, was covered, flatteringly, by the media. May December is not their story, but it does address two key points. What was she thinking. And how did the media become so complicit?

Exclusive: Emmy-winning stars from two of the biggest sitcoms of the late 1990s and early 2000s are coming together in a new Netflix series. Friends alumna Lisa Kudrow has been tapped to star opposite Everybody Loves Raymond‘s Ray Romano in Netflix’s No Good Deed, an eight-episode dark comedy series from Dead To Me creator Liz Feldman.
Created by Feldman, No Good Deed follows three very different families vying to buy the very same 1920s Spanish style villa that they think will solve all their problems. But as the sellers have already discovered, sometimes the home of your dreams can be a total nightmare.
Kudrow will play Lydia Morgan. A highly-talented (and highly-strung) former concert pianist, Lydia is a devoted wife to Paul (Romano) and loving-though-flawed mother to their two children. She is distraught by the idea of selling their Los Feliz home, a place filled with happy memories and dark secrets.

The Hollywood Reporter‘s Women in Entertainment event, presented by Lifetime, returned on Thursday for its annual celebration of Hollywood’s leading ladies.
This year, the star-studded event — which coincided with the publication of THR’s annual Women in Entertainment Power 100 — honored Adele with the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award, highlighting a woman who is a pioneer in her field. Kerry Washington was also recognized with the Equity in Entertainment Award, honoring her work amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities in the entertainment industry.
Inside the breakfast — this year held at the Beverly Hills Hotel — Will Ferrell kicked off the event, declaring right off the bat, “Isn’t it just time for women to run the planet? I’m serious, I’m not just trying to placate you I swear, but I don’t know what else to do because we, men, have run the show since what, 10,000 BC, and we’re not doing so good.

Will Ferrell is one of those stars who will often produce his own movies and then produce films for other actors on the side.

A lot of Will‘s recent projects can be credited to his partnership with producer Jessica Elbaum, his former assistant who worked her way up to head of Gloria Sanchez Productions.

“American Fiction,” “May December” and “Past Lives” dominated the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards nominations on Tuesday, picking up five nods apiece. The three movies are all up for best feature, where they will battle it out against “All of Us Strangers,” “Passages” and “We Grown Now.”
The annual honors recognize the best of television, as well as film. “The Last of Us,” a sci-fi epic that was a ratings hit for HBO, and “I’m a Virgo,” an absurdist miniseries from Boots Riley that was produced by Amazon, led the small screen crop, with four nominations each. Only new TV shows that have run for one season and were released between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 of this year are eligible for awards. That’s why some big-budgeted fare was deemed eligible or, in the parlance of the show, independent.

Newcomer Samy Burch wasn’t exactly shooting for the stars when she started writing “May December” — which would go on to become a parley between Best Actress winners Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, directed by indie icon Todd Haynes — on spec. “I really wrote this in the coat closet of our apartment. If I had had the people that got these roles on the corkboard, I would’ve seemed grandiose,” said the screenwriter to IndieWire during a sit-down at the 2023 Middleburg Film Festival. “My goal with it was honestly to get representation. So everything that’s happened after that has been incredible.”
After making the outline with husband Alex Mechanik, Burch finished the script on Memorial Day 2019, the holiday that coincidentally kicks off the film, which follows an actress who embeds herself into the lives of a scandalized couple when she is cast in a film about them. And, yes,...

It’s a cool indie weekend when the new album by André 3000, New Blue Sun, has morphed into a “cinematic listening experience.” Variance Films is putting the experience, directed by Terence Nance, into three theaters in NYC (IFC Center), LA (Cinepolis Inglewood) and Atlanta (Tara).
Right now, it’s just those locations but after this weekend, “We will see what happens, where the wind takes us,” said Variance CEO Dylan Marchetti. “I swear, I wanted to make a ‘visual album’ but this is literally the way the wind blew me this time,” André has said.
Asked what’s is on the screen, Marchetti said, “Vibes.”
New Blue Sun, out today, is André’s debut solo album, his first full-length LP since his group Outkast released its last record 17 years ago. He described it as “an entirely instrumental album centered around woodwinds; a celebratory piece of work in the form of a living,...

As May December has made the rounds at this year’s film festivals and begun its awards season run, many comparisons have been made between the Netflix movie and the real-life story of Mary Kay Letourneau — a teacher who began a sexual relationship with 12-year-old student Vili Fualaau, going to jail in 1997 before the two were eventually married for 14 years and had several children.
Similarly, May December stars Julianne Moore as Gracie, a 30-something woman who begins a relationship with Joe (played by Charles Melton) when he is in seventh grade; 20 years later, the two are married and have three kids headed to college when actress Elizabeth Berry (Natalie Portman) shows up at their home for a research visit to prepare to play Gracie in a movie.
“Certainly that’s the seed of it, the big picture thing, but it was important to me that this wasn’t the Mary Kay Letourneau story,...

What do Natalie Portman, Margot Robbie and Emma Stone have in common? Aside from being in contention for this year’s best actress nominations, the three multiple-time nominated A-listers could follow in the footsteps of Frances McDormand in this year’s Oscar race.
All three women are producers on each of their films — Portman for “May December,” Robbie for “Barbie” and Stone for “Poor Things.” If any are nominated for best picture and acting, they would be the second (or third or fourth?) women recognized in both categories in the same year. The first was McDormand for “Nomadland” (2020), who went on to win her third and fourth statuettes, the first person ever to win both on the same night.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for “Quiz Lady,” now streaming on Hulu.
The premise of Jessica Yu’s “Quiz Lady” seems like the perfect recipe for an over-the-top, slapstick comedy: two estranged sisters — the uptight Anne (Awkwafina) and the unhinged Jenny (Sandra Oh) — embark on a cross-country roadtrip to cover their mother’s gambling debt. And there are plenty of moments throughout the film that live up to that absurdly hilarious premise, such as Anne tripping on Jenny’s pills while trying to answer quiz questions as Harry Styles’ “Watermelon Sugar” plays.
But Yu knew there was more to the story than just those laugh-out-loud scenes. Throughout the film, there are touching moments delving into the bond the sisters share. The most emotional of which comes at the end of the film. After teaming up to compete in the charades segment of a quiz show hosted by Will Ferrell’s Alex Trebek-like character,...

A dizzying amount of A-list Hollywood actors, comedians and entertainment executives signed an open letter to President Joe Biden on Monday, calling for the release of all hostages taken by terrorist group Hamas.
Amy Schumer, Sacha Baron Cohen, Chris Rock, Gwyneth Paltrow, Katy Perry, Bradley Cooper, Justin Timberlake and more were among the highly visible figures to sign the note, launching a formal campaign called #NoHostageLeftBehind. The note stands in response to events following the Oct. 7 terror attack on Israel at the hands of the extremist group, and its release of four hostages in recent days.
“We are heartened by Friday’s release of the two American hostages, Judith Ranaan and her daughter Natalie Ranaan and by today’s release of two Israelis, Nurit Cooper and Yocheved Lifshitz, whose husbands remain in captivity,” the letter read. “But our relief is tempered by our overwhelming concern that 220 innocent people, including 30 children,...
