For months, TV industry insiders have been wondering why private equity giants like Apollo Global Management and Blackstone have been kicking the tires on local TV station groups.
Television stations — the medium’s oldest form of distribution — hardly seem like a sexy acquisition target these days. By definition, local stations are regionally focused hubs at a time when Big Media is consumed with competing in the global streaming wars; they serve up linear live programming at a time when the on-demand revolution is upending the industry.
TV stations also deviate from streaming in another important way: Most of them churn out a healthy amount of profit and free cash flow. On Feb. 22, Tegna, one of the last large publicly held station groups, announced a $5.4 billion deal with Apollo and media-focused hedge fund Standard General to take the company private.
The deal for Tegna’s 64 stations comes to fruition as the nation’s largest station group,...

In 2014, the Dalian Wanda Group bought eight acres of prime Beverly Hills real estate for $420 million. Then riding high, the Chinese conglomerate planned to plant its flag in the heart of Los Angeles with a luxury hotel and condo development.
Four years later, the parcel sits vacant. It’s for sale, but bids have come in well below asking price. According to a source familiar with the negotiations, the company might hope to get $450 million — which, after carrying costs and development expenses are accounted for, would represent a significant loss.
The Beverly Hills property is a highly visible sign of Wanda’s broader retreat. Under pressure from the Chinese government to reduce its debt, the company has sold off assets in China and around the world, including a stake in its massive new Qingdao studio complex and in soccer squad Atlético Madrid. Its overseas acquisitions drive has sputtered to a halt.

Former Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies’ new book is turning out to be full of interesting tidbits and juicy details. In addition to reviving a well-loved character within its pages, Davies also secretly teased the coming of Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor, the first ever female incarnation of the Time Lord.
Now We Are Six Hundred, a collection of Who-inspired poetry by James Goss, features illustrations by the TV writer (who it turns out is also a dab hand at drawing). Seeing as he had some insider information, Davies decided to get playful with his illustrations and snuck some hints at a female Doctor into the book.
“Let’s just say I’m friends with all these people, with [current showrunner Steven Moffat] and with [new boss Chris Chibnall]. And we’ve been friends for years. So I knew what was in the air. I knew kind of.”

Doctor Who fans, cast your mind back to the jam-packed season 4 finale, “The Stolen Earth/Journey’s End.” The epic two-parter formed a three-way crossover between Doctor Who and its spinoffs, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, as it saw characters from all three shows teaming up to foil a Dalek invasion of Earth. Though they defeated the monsters (of course), the battle cost the life of one of the Doctor’s allies: former prime minister Harriet Jones (Downton Abbey‘s Penelope Wilton).
Well, at least, we thought it did. Now, writer/previous showrunner Russell T. Davies has revealed that he’s retconned the character’s death out of canon in the most unlikely of ways: via an illustration in his new Doctor Who poem book, Now We Are Six Hundred.
“It had to be done,” he said. “And there was a poem about Harriet Jones. Phil Collinson, who was...

Captain Jack Harkness is to be joined by some more familiar faces, as Eve Myles and Kai Owen have signed up for Big Finish's Torchwood audio dramas.
They will reprise their roles as husband-and-wife team Gwen Cooper and Rhys Williams in the third release of the series.

Following in the footsteps of Captain Jack and Ianto, Gwen and Rhys will return for a new Big Finish Torchwood audio story…
Big Finish – the team who have brought us countless Doctor Who audio adventures and several spin-offs – are continuing their Torchwood-themed recruitment drive.
Specifically, they've found a space for Gwen Cooper and Rhys Williams. The loveable couple, described accurately in the press bumf as ‘the heart of Torchwood,’ will return for the third release in Big Finish’s upcoming Torchwood series.
Following in the tradition of bringing back the original cast members (the first story will feature John Barrowman returning as Captain Jack, and the second will star Gareth David-Lloyd as Ianto), Big Finish has nabbed Eve Myles and Kai Owen to reprise their roles from the show.
“Listening to the two of them back together is an utter joy,” says producer James Goss. “We pick up their story after Miracle Day.

Big Finish has nabbed another Torchwood cast member for an audio adventure – Gareth David-Lloyd will reprise the role of Ianto…
Good news for Torchwood fans, here - Gareth David-Lloyd is making a return to his Torchwood character Ianto Jones. Similar to John Barrowman’s audio plans, Gareth David-Lloyd will reprise the role of Ianto for a Big Finish audio adventure later this year.
The new story is entitled Torchwood: Fall To Earth, and it will be the second instalment in Big Finish’s new Torchwood audio series (Barrowman’s Torchwood: The Conspiracy will come first). Fall To Earth will see Ianto on the first privately-funded space flight, where everything naturally goes wrong. We're not sure when the story will be set, but we'd guess it'll have to be a few years ago, for obvious reasons.

One of the quotes The Scientific Secrets Of Doctor Who chooses to open with is said by the Fourth Doctor's sidekick Leela in 1977's Horror Of Fang Rock: "I, too, used to believe in magic, but the Doctor has taught me about science. The earlier seasons, particularly the Hartnell/Troughton monochrome years, tried to root explanations in science - or the closest thing to it - while the more recent series starring Peter Capaldi's cantankerous incarnation asked us to suspend disbelief most of the time (In The Forest Of The Night, though underappreciated, defied basic science). Torchwood is returning with a new series of Big Finish audio dramas.
John Barrowman will reprise the role of Captain Jack Harkness in the first of six adventures to be released from September onwards.
The six dramas will each focus on a different member of the Torchwood team, and will explore the impact a mysterious event has on them.
The Conspiracy will be the first audio drama to be released, with Barrowman's Captain Jack at the heart of the adventure. A new drama will then follow each month from January 2016.
On reviving the Doctor Who spin-off with Big Finish, creator Russell T Davies said: "Torchwood has been to the Moon, and America, and the Himalayas, but now I think it's finally coming home, to the brilliance of Big Finish."
Executive producer Nicholas Briggs added: "Torchwood is something we've wanted to do for ages. It has great characters and there are many stories to be told.

Douglas Adams's Doctor Who script 'City of Death' is being adapted into a novel by author James Goss.
The serial aired on TV in 1979, and featured Tom Baker as the Time Lord and Lalla Ward as his companion Romana.
'City of Death' saw the Doctor and Romana in Paris before encountering Count Scarlioni - who is trying to finance experiments in time travel so that he can go back in time and save his alien ship.
Goss has previously written two Doctor Who novels and produced a BBC radio adaptation of Adams's story 'Shada'.

"In the '80s, they wrote to him and asked if he would like to write [his scripts] as novels. They even said they'd pay double. But he thanked them politely and declined, and used his ideas in other books."

Mark checks out a new mashup of Doctor Who with Shakespeare...
Over its 50 years, Doctor Who has made some pretty wild pseudo-historical leaps in its representation of artists. The Fourth Doctor wrote “This Is A Fake” on the Mona Lisa in Uv pen. Donna Noble came up with the name of Miss Marple. Stevie Wonder sang under London Bridge in 1814.
The new BBC Books tie-in The Shakespeare Notebooks follows in much the same tradition of warping history around the Doctor, with its whole audacious premise being that most of the Bard’s works were Doctor Who fan fiction.
It’s a fun place to start, with an introduction that contextualises the book as a collection of notes and scraps, comprising early drafts and notes written by Will himself. These notes happen to have been transcribed by seasoned Who authors James Goss, Jonathan Morris, Julian Richards, Justin Richards and Matthew Sweet.

Andrew checks out the new Scream Of The Shalka DVD release, out on Monday the 16th of September...
Scream of the Shalka has value beyond being a mere curio. An flash-animated feature made for Doctor Who's Fortieth anniversary in 2003, and broadcast on the BBC website (it's still there), it was intended to be an official continuation of the show after the 1996 TV Movie. It was relegated to non-canonical status when the announcement of the show's return to television occurred in September of that year.
So, besides being another story in its own right (and can now be judged as such, without the pressures it was under on original broadcast), it's also of interest as a different production team's take on the series, and as an example of how the show might work as an animated feature (one of the many things I'll happily...

Robbie Williams was briefly considered to play the Doctor in a Doctor Who online episode.
Prior to the sci-fi drama's return to BBC One in 2005, Richard E Grant voiced the Time Lord in animated series 'Scream of the Shalka', which was released via the show's official website.
However, a documentary on the animation's DVD release reveals that 'Candy' singer Williams was considered for the lead role, claims Blogtor Who.
"Because we were reaching for the mainstream, I actually thought, 'He's one of the most famous people in Britain' - it would actually get us an enormous kick of attention," writer Paul Cornell explained.
Producer James Goss added: "Think about it - if you really wanted to bring Doctor Who to a whole new audience, it would have been the most popular, talked-about thing the BBC website ever did."
Williams was ultimately unable to meet the production's schedule, with Grant ultimately...

This is as good a theory as any I’ve heard today for TiVo‘s startling and mysterious decision to settle two patent-infringement cases for far less than anyone expected, which resulted in a 19% drop in its stock price. It seems that last month the European Patent Office revoked TiVo’s patent for the process that enables a DVR to record one show while you watch another, Susquehanna Financial Group’s Thomas Clapps discovered. That “appears to be the same … patent that was at issue” in TiVo’s disputes with Motorola and Cisco. The ruling was made May 17 and posted on the European Patent Register website on May 29 — which was “in the middle of pretrial preparations for the Motorola case” originally scheduled to begin June 10. TiVo said this morning that it accepted $490M to settle its disputes with the two rival DVR manufacturers in cases that also involved Time Warner Cable.

So, puppets. We all know them. We all love them. Except, apparently, for James Goss, who wrote this story about homicidal alien puppets hell-bent on taking over the Earth. It’s an odd little story, with singing, and cheerfulness, and of course all sorts of unpleasantness.
It’s told in the form of a children’s TV show, with Jo Grant (Katy Manning) talking with the host of the show (Merlyn Hayes) and acting as sort of a “special guest”. As the show progresses we learn more and more about the Scorchies, listen to a few songs (“Jo Making a Thing” is a bit of an earworm), and are treated to one of the more interesting explanations for an alien species that Doctor Who has ever provided.
In a sense, there’s shades of “The Idiot’s Lantern” here. We have a TV show that’s a front for evil badness.

New York -- Sirius Xm Satellite Radio hopes to have an update on the future of shock jock Howard Stern, whose contract is up at the end of this year, before its next earnings conference call, which is in about three months.
"We hope that prior to the third-quarter earnings conference call we can have an announcement on what is going on with Howard," CEO Mel Karmazin told Wall Street at the end of Wednesday morning's second-quarter call.
While the company has previously mainly suggested people keep an ear on Stern for an update, the latest comment came at the very end of the call as president and chief content officer Scott Greenstein reminded Karmazin to mention the latest. In that context, the comments hinted at optimism that the radio star would extend his relationship with Sirius.

New York -- Despite a strong upfront advertising market, big media and entertainment stocks lost ground -- and billions in stock market value -- in the second quarter amid broader market declines since May induced by concern over weak economic growth and European debt fears.
After setting 52-week highs late in the first and early in the second quarter, all sector biggies with the exception of Viacom find themselves below their 2009 close after stumbling to the midyear mark with further declines.
It marks a stark contrast from the end of the first quarter, when Sony led the entertainment conglomerates with a 32.1% year-to-date improvement.
The market lost about $1.6 trillion in value during the quarter, as measured by the Dow. The index dropped 364 points Tuesday and Wednesday, punctuating a 10% tumble in the three-month period.

Years ago, most investors in media and entertainment stocks didn't dare even hope for dividends.
However, the shareholder payouts now have become an increasingly popular way for industry companies to reward investors, and with the worst of the credit crunch over, more dividend money has started to flow.
Case in point: the latest earnings season, which brought dividend increases from such sector heavyweights as Time Warner (up 13%) and News Corp. (up 25%) and a dividend launch by Time Warner Cable. Those followed a 40% dividend boost by cable giant Comcast late last year.
DirecTV also said recently that it would consider a dividend, and Wall Street is betting that exhibition powerhouse Regal could increase its payouts again this year as could other sector firms amid a lack of big M&A activity.
"Everyone is sitting on a pile of cash, and investors need yield given how low bonds and government notes are yielding,...

With the new year up and running, Wall Street analysts recently picked their favorite media and entertainment stocks. Time Warner, Disney, Time Warner Cable and Regal Entertainment are among the most popular recommendations, but analysts made arguments for a range of companies. So, buckle up for a ride to explore some of the industry's must-haves.
Regal selection
Thanks to record-breaking boxoffice trends, Regal has emerged as a popular choice on the Street to ride that wave.
"Our favorite entertainment name remains Regal Entertainment Group given its 5% dividend/12% estimated 2010 free-cash-flow yield and continued prospects for 3D boxoffice growth," Wunderlich Securities analyst Matthew Harrigan said in a recent note to investors. He rates the stock a "buy" with a $19 price target.
Merriman Curhan Ford analyst Eric Wold told clients last month to buy shares of Regal as he sees their price climbing as high as $19 this year, as well as smaller exhibitor Cinemark,...

New York -- The latest economic data Thursday suggested that the U.S. recession is over, news that comes just ahead of key quarterly earnings reports in which investors will focus on just how much improvement big media and entertainment CEOs see in the advertising market.
U.S. gross domestic product rose at a better-than-expected 3.5% annualized rate during the third quarter, the first gain in a year. The bump comes after recent reports from media analysts talking up improving ad trends and boosting earnings predictions for this year and 2010.
"We expect third-quarter ad results to show an improvement in trends from the second quarter," Ubs analyst Michael Morris said. But year-over-year ad comparisons will remain down in many cases, and cost cuts will continue to play a key role.
Industry watchers will listen closely for how bullish CEOs sound, with CBS Corp. president and CEO Leslie Moonves so far the...

New York -- Discovery Communications more than quadrupled its second-quarter profit as higher U.S. ratings, increased international subscribers, cost controls and a special gain offset a slight advertising decline.
The company Tuesday reported a profit of $183 million for the period, including a $46 million tax gain from the partial sale of Discovery Kids, compared with $43 million in the year-ago period. Revenue fell by $4 million to $881 million.
Ad revenue declined slightly to $368 million, but U.S. advertising rose 1%, which Ubs analyst Michael Morris said "outperformed peers." Viacom's cable networks unit, for example, posted a 6% domestic ad revenue decline in the latest period.
"Discovery's second-quarter results demonstrate our ability to execute on our business plan and strategic initiatives in a difficult operating environment," president and CEO David Zaslav said.

Former BBC Doctor Who website master James Goss has contributed to the new run of Torchwood books set for release in October - and Risk Assessment certainly has an interesting premise... ‘Are you trying to tell me, Captain Harkness, that the entire staff of Torchwood Cardiff now consists of yourself, a woman in trousers and a tea boy?’ Agnes Havisham is awake, and Jack is worried (and not a little afraid). "Up" is not just Hollywood's latest blockbuster-in-waiting, it's also the direction media stocks -- and, many hope, the overall fortunes of studio congloms -- are headed after a decidedly downbeat period.
This earnings season, U.S. entertainment execs have started to sound cautiously bullish on the ad market and the overall economy. No doubt that's because stocks have been so buoyant since early March, in many cases outpacing gains in broader markets.
"Commentary from management on second-quarter calls was virtually unanimous that the bottom is in for the economy and advertising growth," says Steve Birenberg of Northlake Capital Management and SNL Kagan's media blogger.
The key questions now are: Is the stabilization for real, and how can the congloms best position themselves for the stock rally to continue?
Indeed, the bounce might be a temporary bear-market rally, as evidenced by declines this week and persistent skepticism from European and Canadian execs at ad-reliant media companies.
