“My Magic” remains the only movie from Singapore to be nominated for the Palme D’Or, while it was also selected as Singapore’s official entry for the Oscars in 2009. Khoo cast Tamil actors, a minority in Singapore, in a rarity for local cinema, while Francis Bosco, the protagonist, is a real life magician. Lastly, the film was shot in just 9 days, and most of Bosco’s stunts were done in one take, since Khoo was afraid he would be injured, while the music of the film is courtesy of Khoo’s then 10-year-old son, Christopher.

HBO Asia has expanded its burgeoning production slate with six-episode half-hour series “Invisible Stories.” The first two episodes of the show, “Lian” and “Chuan,” play at the Singapore International Film Festival on Nov. 28.
The series is by writer and director Ler Jiyuan, who previously directed part of HBO Asia Original series “Grisse.” “Like 80% of Singaporeans, I live in a Housing Development Board flat, in a regular Hdb public housing estate,” Ler told Variety. “ ‘Invisible Stories’ is pretty much the world that I came from. I grew up in a three-room flat in Ang Mo Kio (residential town), back in the 1990s. My father was a taxi driver, my mother a factory worker who eventually lost her job during a financial crisis. The life I live, the people I see, were all inspirations for ‘Invisible Stories.’ For example, just two doors down from me was a spiritual medium who turned his flat into a temple.

A man with a white shirt is ascending the stairs to his home, only to find that his door has been forced open. He goes in silently, and finds a man searching his things. He attacks him, beats him rather harshly and ties him up to interrogate him. It turns out the man with a white shirt is a crooked cop, whose wife has left him a while ago after finding out that he deals drugs on the side, while the burglar is supposedly a man who picked this particular house randomly, in order to pay loan sharks, so his wife will not leave him. The two discuss their personal lives, and the cop decides to let the man go, even giving him money for the doctor. Then he calls his wife asking her to meet him, despite the late hour, in order to discuss getting together again. Things, however,...

Zahir Omar’s directorial debut feature “Fly by Night” takes us to a familiar territory of a genre cinema, but in a less threadbare setting of Kuala Lumpur’s underworld. Visually engaging, with a good job of the ensemble cast, it puts the viewer in a proper mood straightaway: catchy blues tunes flow, and the camera gives us a dynamic ride through the nighttime streets of the city, illuminated by the neon lights of the opening credits.

"Let's give our people their justice." Samuel Goldwyn has released an official Us trailer for a western action film titled Buffalo Boys, coming from Indonesia (where it's set), and produced out of Singapore. This just premiered at the Fantasia and New York Asian Film Festivals this fall, and is also this year's Singaporean Oscar submission for Best Foreign Language Film. This "fun old-school western flick" is about two brothers named Jamar and Suwo who return to the land of Java to avenge their father, a murdered Sultan, after years of exile in America working on the railroads, and being cowboys. But they end up in a fight for their lives. The main cast of Buffalo Boys includes Yoshi Sudarso, Ario Bayu, Pevita Pearce, Tio Pakusadewo, Conan Stevens, Reinout Bussemaker, Zack Lee, and Sunny Pang. Holy hell, this looks badass!! Get a load of this, seriously - the action actually looks clear and kinetic.

In an interview I had with Timo Tjahjanto in 2017, in a question about the appeal of violence on screen, he stated: “Violence speaks to me easily, and I think way too easy, to the point that I find myself often fighting hard for self-restraint. I think that’s where Kimo usually comes to play, he is the guy that put breaks on my violence-throttle”. Well, let’s just say that Kimo is nowhere to be found in this movie.

Action fans could hardly wish for anything more than what’s served up in “The Night Comes for Us,” a Jakarta-set Triad crime epic boasting some of the most inventive, gory, and dazzlingly choreographed screen violence in recent memory. Confidently executed by Indonesian writer-director Timo Tjahjanto, whose credits as one half of the Mo Brothers team include “Killers” and “Headshot,” this cartoonish cavalcade of carnage potently reunites “The Raid” stars Joe Taslim and Iko Uwais as former friends on a corpse-strewn collision course. Though confusing at times and a little too much of a good thing at two hours, “Night” should satisfy the target audience via Netflix, where it launches Oct. 19.
An extremely energetic workout on the familiar tale of a criminal who turns his back on the mob following a crisis of conscience, “Night” sets things up with text information about “The Six Seas,” an elite squad of Triad enforcers.

“You can’t kill what’s already dead,” someone gurgles towards the end of Timo Tjahjanto’s “The Night Comes for Us,” and while that assessment may be true, the recent onslaught of bone-crunching Indonesian action films has made it painfully, relentlessly, nauseatingly clear that you can do pretty much anything to what’s about to die. You can shoot it. You can stab it. You can impale it with a spare cow femur that you find lying on the floor of a butcher shop. And — most important of all — you can mix-and-match those methods (and hundreds more just like them) to your heart’s delight, over and over again, until the props department finally runs out of fake blood.
In a grimy beat-em-up like “The Night Comes for Us,” where fake blood appears to account for something like 80% of the shooting budget, that can take a mighty long time.

Tjahjanto's regular Mo Brother collaborator Kimo Stamboel is on board as producer and, yep, The Raid and Headshot cohorts Iko Uwais, Julie Estelle and Sunny Pang were all on board as well. And what happens when you give this crew an eternity of shooting time? Violence happens. Lots and lots of violence. The Night Comes For Us...

Thrilling fight scenes and dizzyingly relentless action elevate this Indonesian adventure to headspinning heights
The title gives just a hint of the full extent of cranial damage crammed into this dizzyingly relentless action movie. Heads are shot, punched, kicked, clobbered with typewriters, dented with retractable truncheons and submitted to some particularly grisly eye-socket trauma. Indonesian genre specialists the Mo Brothers (Timo Tjahjanto, Kimo Stamboel) tackle the martial arts genre, and the result is the most insanely violent film of the year.
The whiplash pencak silat skills of Iko Uwais (star of The Raid and both star and fight choreographer of this film) and his Raid co-star Julie Estelle are showcased, alongside those of a host of expendable other fighters. Notable are Very Tri Yulisman, playing a killer hipster with ironic spectacles and a Hoxton haircut, and Sunny Pang, radiating evil as the Father from Hell, a powerful crime boss with...

Everything you need to know about “Headshot,” an Indonesian bloodbath that stars the same actor from “The Raid” and feels like it was cut together from that film’s deleted footage, can be gleaned from an early fight scene aboard a public bus that’s just been shot to pieces by a gang of vicious criminals.
Our hero, an amnesiac ass-kicker named Ishmael (Iko Uwais), doesn’t remember that he used to be a member of the same syndicate that he’s now trying to kill, hops on board and promptly begins to snap ligaments and gouge eyeballs. Directors Kimo Stamboel and Timo Tjahjanto make spectacular use of the confined area, and — as with all of the many, many death matches that are stretched across this saga — the sequence continues for so long that you forget how the characters actually got there.
So when Ishmael eventually tackles one of the...

A man (Iko Uwais) is discovered left for dead with a gunshot wound to the head, and, after months in a coma, is nursed back to health by young student-doctor Ailin. Realizing that the man is an amnesiac, Ailin renames him Ishmael. When Ailin is kidnapped by a gang of dangerous criminals led by enigmatic crimelord Lee, Ishmael suspects his true identity is closely tied to these people. Determined to save the woman who rescued him, Ishmael has no choice but to confront his past.

"I died once. I won't die again." Vertical Entertainment has debuted a kick ass new action-packed trailer for the Indonesian action film Headshot, starring Iko Uwais from The Raid movies, directed by the guys who made that totally crazy "Safe Haven" segment of V/H/S 2. We initially featured a trailer for this film last year just before it premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, but this new one is much better and makes this movie look like a must see. Uwais plays a guy who wakes up without any memory, only to sudden remember everything and go after the gangsters who took the love of his life. The cast includes Julie Estelle, Sunny Pang, Very Tri Yulisman and others. This looks totally awesome, I'm so ready to give this film a shot. Enjoy. White Sun wins key award at the 27th Singapore International Film Festival.
White Sun won best film in the Silver Screen Awards at the 27th Singapore International Film Festival.
The second feature of Nepalese director Deepak Rauniyar is about a Maoist who returns home to bury his father.
The jury found it “an exceptional and incisive film about civil war and memory that encapsulates the never-ending conflict that is the state of the world today, with a message of hope that a different future for all of us can be possible through our children”.
Abdullah Mohammad Saad was named best director for his debut feature Live From Dhaka, which also took best performance for actor Mostafa Monwar. Shot in grainy black and white, it tells the story of a partially handicapped man who lives his days in anguish as he tries to find a way to leave Dhaka.
A special mention went to Turah, the debut feature...

Gareth Huw Evans’s martial arts film “The Raid” premiered at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival to positive reviews, with much of the acclaim going to its Indonesian lead Iko Uwais whose flying fists and lightening-quick agility wowed audiences at the festival and in theaters around the country. Now, Iko Uwais stars in “Headshot” as a man who wakes up with no memory of his identity or past. His devoted student doctor Ailin (Chelsea Islan) names him “Ishmael” and helps him regain his memory; soon he learns about his past involving Lee (Sunny Pang), a vengeful drug lord. Dear America – please outsource all action films to Indonesia from here-on-out. How can you watch a movie like Headshot and be content with typical Us ground-and-pound generics? The Mo Brothers (Kimo Stamboel/Timo Tjahjanto) break more bones than a twenty-story fall, (assumably) spending most of their budget on limb-cracking practical effects that still can’t distract from such aggressive beauty. Iko Uwais makes Jason Bourne look like a punk bitch in this brilliantly bone-crunching symphony of destruction, proving both the Mo Brothers and Mr. Uwais to be as boldly badass as we hoped their latest genre assault would permit.
Uwais plays a man who calls himself Ishmael, only because he wakes up in a hospital bed with no memory or identification. In the room is a napping Dr. Ailin (Chelsea Islan), who’s shocked by the previously-comatose patient’s now lively demeanor. She immediately begins nursing the empty-minded Ishmael back to strength,...

With its relatively simple premise and mesmerizing fight choreography, Welsh filmmaker Gareth Evans produced a modern-day cult classic in The Raid: Redemption five years ago, a low-budget thriller that crammed in more stomach-churning deaths and dizzying Silat stunts that you can shake a machete at. It also fostered a kick-ass working relationship between Evans and Indonesian action star Iko Uwais, who went on to reunite for The Raid 2 in 2014.
Headlining two critically-acclaimed action movies in the space of three years undoubtedly put Uwais on the international map, and with Tiff 2016 looming large, the actor is returning to the fray for amnesiac thriller, Headshot.
Directed by Kimo Stamboel and Timo Tjahjanto – the latter of whom penned the screenplay – what has us cautiously optimistic for this latest Uwais-fronted actioner is how Headshot looks to balance its visceral, bone-crunching action with a story that, at least based on today’s brief trailer,...

Indonesian based Mo Brothers (actual names Kimo Stamboel and Timo Tjahjanto) make yet another turn in their career. From low budget slasher “Macabre” to internationally backed thriller”Killers,” and now to a genuine action film, with “Headshot.”
In a sort of Indonesian edition of Jason Bourne, the film features Iko Uwais as Ismail, an amnesiac who washes ashore with a serious head injury. A woman doctor (Chelsea Islan) nurses him back to health as he falls in love with her. Eventually though, he discovers that he is a trained killing machine, as his past returns to haunt him.
Julie Estelle, Very Tri Yulisman and Sunny Pang also star in the film.
“Headshot” is much reminiscent of “The Raid:Redemption”, with impressive and quite violent action.
The film will premiere at Toronto International Film Festival.

If you’re like me, the name Iko Uwais attached to the words Action Movie is enough to get you amply excited for the project, regardless of all other factors. Until a Raid 3 happens or not, Uwais is keeping those cement-wall-hardened knuckles sharp. So comes the first trailer for the cleanly titled Headshot, helmed by Timo Tjahjato (co-director on the V/H/S 2 segment Safe Haven with Raid helmer Gareth Evans) and Kimbo Stamboel (producer on Safe Haven).
It’s the classic action flick set-up: A man (Uwais) washes up on shore with amnesia. A sweet, caring doctor takes him in. His past comes to haunt him, big time. That’s all you need before the bullets fly and tables break. The kinetic, frantic style of screened Indonesian action popularized by Gareth Evan’s Raid series is on full display in Headshot. Malaysian director James Lee has got the action bug. Having directed Sunny Pang in martial arts action-comedy The Collector, Lee is now messing around with firearms. He's gathered Pang and some of his other usual suspects together for Last Supper, a short film project that doubles as a camera test for an as yet unspecified future action project.Though shot fast and cheap - so, yes, the same muzzle flash effect is used for every gunshot - it captures a smart director learning on the fly. And it certainly doesn't hurt that Sunny Pang has as much action-man charisma as he does. Watch the short below....
