- Was CBC Television's first regular newsreader in 1954.
- He tried Shakespearean acting in England for a few years. He then became a radio announcer at the CBC in 1940. He enlisted in the Canadian Army and served in North Africa and Italy in World War II. In 1950, he became the first Canadian broadcaster to cover the Korean War. In the 1970s, he went to Tanzania to help set up its national broadcasting system.
