New film will tell story of Rosemary Kennedy, who was left with the mental capacity of a two-year-old after botched operation carried out on the order of Joseph Kennedy Sr
Emma Stone will star as John F Kennedy’s lesser-known eldest sister Rose Marie “Rosemary” Kennedy, who was lobotomised at the age of 23 after developing violent mood swings that threatened to embarrass her famous family.
Letters From Rosemary will be based on a screenplay by first-time screenwriter Nick Yarborough which deals with events leading up to the lobotomy and its aftermath, according to Variety. The film does not yet have a director attached but is being backed by the Anonymous Content production company, which helped bring 2016 Oscar winners Spotlight and The Revenant to the big screen.

Boardwalk Empire, Season 5, Episode 3: “What Jesus Said”
Written by Cristine Chambers and Howard Korder
Directed by Ed Bianchi
Airs Sundays at 9pm Est on HBO
As we approach the halfway point for Boardwalk Empire‘s final season, we are given an underwhelming, if somewhat eventful, episode.
“What Jesus Said” opens with Chalky and his loose cannon partner breaking into the house of the latter’s former employer. In what is easily the low point of the episode, Chalky’s plot consists of balancing precariously between his edgy accomplice, Milton, and the mother and daughter whom they have taken hostage. Although on paper, the idea might sound engaging, it plays out in a mostly uninspired manner due to the fact that Chalky isn’t given a whole lot to do. These scenes, which take up roughly 1/3 of the main plots explored this week, consist widely of three other characters who...

The assassination of JFK and the conspiracy theories that followed have proved irresistible to writers and artists, from Oliver Stone to Stephen King
• Mark Lawson on the 10 best books inspired by JFK
The grassy knoll. The book depository. Any further description of the location is superfluous. We know where we are, and when. Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas on 22 November 1963: the scene of the assassination of President John F Kennedy. History assumes mythic proportions when its very familiarity requires no further explanation or scene-setting; when it provides instead a well-signposted point of departure for artistic creativity. The matter of Dallas has been as resonant in the fiction and film of the past half century as the story of the Trojan war was in the literature of classical antiquity. Only Hitler and the Nazis rival its influence on the modern imagination.
Yet the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination will not be marked by consensus.

The Pentagon attempted unsuccessfully to repress William Bradford Huie's 1954 book on the subject. A couple of music companies reported Wednesday the compensation awarded to their top executives. In the last year, it paid a whole lot more to work for concert promoter and Ticketmaster parent Live Nation Entertainment that it did to work for the popular purveyor of Internet-streamed music Pandora Media. Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino earned $11.9 million in 2011, down from $15.9 million a year earlier, according to an SEC filing on Wedesday. Rapino's compensation fell primarily because he received fewer stock awards in 2011 than he did the year before. Joseph Kennedy, meanwhile, was paid $732,

Company Of The Dead by David J. Kowalski Titan Books
Alternate history books, I’ve always felt, have an extra layer of difficulty in properly executing them. It’s not just enough to create solid characters and tell a good story. With alternate history the author has to find a way to take known occurrences, re-work them, and then find new consequences and events that could have spun off of these re-worked happenings. The new world must be plausible; it must be familiar without being identical. Above all, it must have enough basis in reality that the audience can attach itself to the work and almost feel the “What if?” of it all. Fans of alternate history all know the name Harry Turtledove, The Master of Alternate History. With Company Of The Dead, David J. Kowalski is looking to carve a place out for himself amongst the pantheon of great alternate history writers.

Big news coming out of the Toronto International Film Festival today. The lineup for the documentary slate was announced earlier and now the Midnight Madness programme has also been announced. The entire list of genre films playing are listed below and personally I think this is the most exciting in the program’s history. These 10 films close each day of the festival to thousands of hardcore fans who flock out to the Ryerson Theatre each night.
“Ravenous cinephiles will devour the roster of chillers, action thrillers and pitch-black comedies that fill this year’s slate,” said Tiff Programmer Colin Geddes in a press release. “Martial arts assassins, cops and robbers, escaped lunatics and vampire ballerinas will take over Ryerson Theatre every night at midnight, and deliver the shocking and rocking experience that our loyal audience flocks to take part in, helping make these screenings so memorable.”
Here is the list:...

Aaron Sorkin has tackled the news business in "Sports Night," and he's tackled newsmakers, in "The West Wing." Now, he's combining the two, and already, has a real life story on his hands.
Sorkin, who is developing the behind-the-scenes cable news drama, "More As This Story Develops" for HBO, has cast Kathleen "Kick" Kennedy, daughter of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., in the show, marking the first major role for the Stanford and Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute graduate, the NY Post reports.
The casting marks a nice full-circle for the Kennedy clan in show business: Joseph Kennedy, the family patriarch, was a big studio bigwig back in his day, and then, following their political dynasty in the 60s, they became the subject of years of productions. Now, they'll be back in the world of making the films -- about subject matter other than themselves.

After experiencing the first two hours of the new miniseries, "The Kennedys" -- and it really is an "experience," much like oral surgery or passing a gallstone out of your eyeball is an "experience" -- you begin to understand why the History channel passed on the series. It's not because the History channel was really worried about image or branding -- the channel's highest rated series are "Ice Road Truckers," "Ax Men" and "UFO Hunters," so the idea that a miniseries could tarnish their image any further is like saying that Kevin James passed up that third jelly donut because he was watching his figure. It's not because "The Kennedys" is politically controversial, either -- there's nothing in the series that hasn't been suggested, insinuated, rumored, or documented a thousand times before. Jack Kennedy liked to bang broads! Whoa! Step back! You're blowing my mind!

The long-awaited, much-buzzed-about-for-all-the-wrong-reasons miniseries 'The Kennedys' premiered Sunday night against a backdrop of thematically similar programming: 'The Borgias,' another story about a family's ruthless and debauched political dynasty, and next week's British royal wedding, which will undoubtedly prove our enduring obsession with real-life kings and queens.
But unfortunately for the 'The Kennedys,' and the suddenly upstart Reelz Channel, this miniseries may end up having more in common with Charlie Sheen's 'Torpedo of Truth' tour, another easily predictable disaster that somehow drew audiences in despite their better instincts.
The first two hours of the series, which rotated between the 1960 presidential election and various stages of World War II, served as an introduction to this interpretation of the Kennedy clan. The narrative covers a lot of ground, usually in three- or six-month intervals. We see major events in the family's history, like the sudden demise...

Update: A rep for DirecTV confirmed that the company is "in preliminary stages of discussion" for The Kennedys. Previous: DirecTV already provided primetime refuge to two series that had faced premature death on other networks, NBC's Friday Night Lights and FX's Damages. Could it do it again for the controversial mini-series The Kennedys? TVLine's Michael Ausiello is reporting that the satcaster is in talks to air the eight-part miniseries, which was scrapped by History on Friday, shortly before it was to debut, because of reported political pressure from the Kennedy family. Unlike History and most of the broadcast and cable networks, DirecTV is not part of a vertically integrated conglom. The Kennedys, from 24 co-creator Joel Surnow, stars Greg Kinnear as JFK, Katie Holmes as wife Jackie, Barry Pepper as Bobby Kennedy, and Tom Wilkinson as Joseph Kennedy. The mini was recently shopped to Showtime, which passed on Wednesday.

I was really looking forward to watching this series, but it was just announced that The History Channel and A&E network has cancelled the series, and it will not air because it's to controversial. Like The History Channel has never aired anything Controversial before? Come on!

Tasteless plastic toy comedy offers an antidote to the grim tone struck by other paranoid alternate histories
I salute the makers of Jackboots On Whitehall for finding a fresh approach to the surprisingly rich genre of movies that ask that big and troubling question: Dude, What If Hitler Had Won? (or Invaded?) In their account, which marries the action-puppet idiocy of Team America: World Police to the demented historical revisionism of Inglourious Basterds, Hitler will invade, Panzers will thunder along the Strand, and Churchill himself will be seen brandishing a machine gun on the steps of No 10, ventilating wave upon wave of the Krautonic hordes.
It's about time someone took the piss out of all this again, because most of the work in this field has had a very grim tone over the years. And it's been years. I thought that downbeat fictional speculations on a Nazified Britain or America...

Elegant and charming supporting actor with more than 200 credits over a 70-year career
Kevin McCarthy, who has died aged 96, notched up more than 70 years as a working actor on stage and screen, with more than 200 film and TV credits. However mundane the material, it was usually enhanced by his lazy charm and natural elegance, his intriguing baritone voice and unconventional good looks – all attributes that might well have led him down the political path of his cousin, senator Eugene McCarthy. As it happened, he preferred to play politicians rather than be one.
He received his first screen credit in Laslo Benedek's version of Death of a Salesman (1951). McCarthy had previously played Biff, one of Willy Loman's disillusioned sons, in the London production of Arthur Miller's play, in 1949. By the time of the movie, he was a youthful-looking 37, with considerable stage experience. Resuming the role of Biff, he held...

V.F. contributor and Old-Hollywood expert Cari Beauchamp says the best remedy for anxiety about the state of the world is classic film. “Switch from MSNBC to TCM,” she suggests. The prolific writer got her start as a Raymond Chandler-esque private investigator out of college, and says that it was the best schooling a reporter could ever ask for. “The information is out there," she says. "You just gotta dig.” Beauchamp, who recently released a biography of Joseph Kennedy's flirtation with Hollywood (read our excerpt, about Kennedy's Riviera fling with Marlene Dietrich), shared with me the importance of silent film; explained why Hollywood folktales are like a game of telephone; and revealed which Hollywood star had the longest list of male conquests.

“The Kennedys” is going to be the History Channel’s first scripted miniseries and they recently announced that Katie Holmes will portray Jacqueline Kennedy while Greg Kinnear is taking on the role of President John F. Kennedy. (What, was Tom Cruise busy?) Barry Pepper has been cast to play Robert Kennedy, who served as U.S. attorney general in his brother’s administration while Tom Wilkinson is taking on the role of the patriarch, Joseph Kennedy.
According to the channel, the eight-hour miniseries, which will air on the History Channel in 2011, will include the family’s personal drama along with major events of their time. Katie’s going to have to bring back the bob - and also her acting skills. Do you think she has what it takes to play the most famous First Lady ever?

The History Channel announced today it will do an eight-hour mini-series on the Kennedy family. The TV station said it will focus on intrigue and power-play, and on the Kennedy personalities rather than abstract politics. In particular the series will delve into the complex relationship between Joseph Kennedy and his sons. The Atlantic Monthly TV blog has the press release: “The Kennedys” is the saga of the most fabled political family in American history, told in a manner similar to “The Godfather”: a manipulative, egocentric father determined to live out his own ambitions through his sons, who in turn spent their lives dancing to his tune while at the same time trying to stand on their own. The program will also explore the Kennedys’ mob connection, the press release said. In March this year, the series-makers gave another statement to the press. The TV trade magazine Variety said "The...
