Opposition to the Academy’s plan to award eight Oscars prior to the live telecast continues to grow, with more than 350 new names — including more than a dozen Oscar-winning editors, cinematographers and production designers — added to the petition sent last week to Academy president David Rubin urging a reversal of the plan.
Among the industry professionals signing are Oscar-winning cinematographers John Seale (“The English Patient”), John Toll (“Braveheart”) and Dean Semler (“Dances With Wolves”), and Oscar-winning editors Richard Chew and Paul Hirsch (“Star Wars”), Mikkel Neilsen (“The Sound of Metal”), Pietro Scalia (“JFK”) and Zach Staenberg (“The Matrix”).
Oscar-winning production designers Hannah Beachler (“Black Panther”), Barbara Ling (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”), Adam Stockhausen (“Grand Budapest Hotel”) and David and Sandy Wasco (“La La Land”) also signed on.
Cinematography will be presented during the live show, but editing and production design are among the eight awards to be presented during the 4 p.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced this week that the Los Angeles City Council, in a unanimous vote, approved plans for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. Construction will begin this summer, and ceremonial groundbreaking festivities will occur this fall.

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

Exclusive: Deadline revealed exclusively Friday that longtime UTA Production Department co-head Wayne Fitterman had left that agency and was in talks to land at Wme. I have confirmed that he has now officially joined Wme as a partner and that he will head Wme’s Production Department. As I wrote, Fitterman had expected to bring three of his cohorts along with him. UTA staved off that coup, but Fitterman brings 46 clients with him so far, with a lot more hanging in the balance. This is an unsung part of the business, covering cinematographers, editors, line producers, production designers, costume designers, and visual effects supervisors. But it’s important. Exclusive: Wayne Fitterman, the longtime co-head of UTA‘s below the line division, is exiting, I’ve learned. The Production Department continues to be headed by Pete Franciosa. The pair have long steered the seven-person department that reps editors, cinematographers, costume designers, visual effects and other personnel. I’m told that Fitterman was going to leave with three of his colleagues, but at the last minute the others decided to stay. I’ve confirmed Fitterman is leaving, and they were all in talks to move to Wme, but I am waiting to see if in fact Fitterman ends up there. It is unclear which of his clients would move over with him.

Motion picture literary agent Jason Burns and alternative TV agent Brett Hansen, both longtime UTA agents who began their careers at the agency, have been promoted to the UTA Partnership.
A native Californian, Burns began his career at Smith Barney in the stock broker training program. In 1997, he left the investment firm to pursue his interest in the entertainment industry, entering UTA's Agent Training Program. In June 2000, Burns was promoted to agent in the motion picture literary department, where he has spent the past decade representing both established and up-and-coming filmmakers and screenwriters.
Burns' clients include Ruben Fleischer, Phil Lord & Chris Miller, Chris Gorak, Josh Zetumer, Scott Z. Burns, Oliver Hirschbiegel, Phil Johnston, John Hlavin and David Callaham.
