Look Now! will release ThuleTuvalu [pictured] in Swiss cinemas in early 2014.
Zurich-based HesseGreutert Film has turned its attention to the highly topical issue of climate change for its new feature documentary production ThuleTuvalu, directed by Matthias von Gunten.
In the €870,000 production, Von Gunten visited Thule, the northernmost town in Greenland, where the ice is melting, and then travelled to the other side of the globe to the Pacific island state of Tuvalu which is slowly drowning in the rising sea.
Look Now!, which has released such documentaries as David Sieveking’s Vergiß Mein Nicht and Peter Liechti’s Vaters Garten this year, plans to release ThuleTuvalu in Swiss cinemas in early 2014.
HesseGreutert had also produced von Gunten’s previous film, the documentary project Max Frisch, Citoyen, which was also distributed by Look Now!
Producer Simon Hesse also told Screen that next year will also see the theatrical release of HesseGreutert’s production of Men Lareida’s feature debut, Viktoria...

German documentarian David Sieveking's previous film David Wants to Fly played at Fidocs in 2011, which was the only time I had the opportunity to see what I feel is one of the most impressive and powerful documentaries of the new decade. That film's subject matter and interviewees have prevented its release in most countries, as it centers around the filmmaker David Lynch and his association with the movement of Trascendental Meditation, and its connections with an almost mob-like organization that practically scams people out of their money. It's a shame that a lawsuit is preventing this from being seen by a wider audience, but at least we can be sure that they won't be able to stop Sieveking's new movie from getting a release,...

This year's Hot Docs [1] festival ended a couple of weeks ago, and and only now have we finally managed to purge our thoughts on the many documentaries that we've seen this year. Jay put up a much more comprehensive post over on The Documentary Blog [2], but I have taken a selection of these reviews and reposted them here for your convenience. If you like what you see, be sure to head over there and read the rest. Also, don't forget to check out previous reviews of the following films: Teenage Paparazzo [3] The People vs. George Lucas [4] Gasland [5] Arsy-Versy [6] Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage [7] American: The Bill Hicks Story [8] The Invention of Dr Nakamats [9] 12th & Delaware [10] The Oath [11] Secrets of the Tribe [12] Capsule reviews for more films including Steven Soderbergh's And Everything is Going Fine, Chris Hegedus and D.A. Every filmmaker dreams of meeting their favourite director. So when aspiring filmmaker David Sieveking had the opportunity, he begins his film David Wants to Fly with a trip to the United States to hear David Lynch speak about his passion for Transcendental Meditation, a movement founded by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi—who also inspired, among others, The Beatles and Donovan. Sieveking is granted an interview with Lynch, who encourages him to try meditation for himself, as a means for personal success. Sieveking follows this advice and it seems to work for a bit: he does get financing for his film script, but then his girlfriend moves away to New York. And as Sieveking delves deeper into the Transcendental Meditation organization after the death of the Maharishi, he witnesses an ugly power struggle in the upper echelons of the movement and begins to see Tm as a corrupt business and quite possibly a scam.

The full line-up and schedule for this year's Hot Docs film festival went online earlier today, and if you're a documentary fan living in the Toronto area, I think you'll be pretty pleased with the selections. This year's festival runs from April 29th to May 9th, and even if you don't plan on attending, it's still worth perusing the listings just to make a note of some of the intriguing non-fiction films to keep an eye on in the coming months. Although there don't seem to be quite as many high-profile films this year, there are still a lot of cool hidden gems buried among the various programs. I've made a short list of some of the highlights after the jump, but you should head over to the Hot Docs official site [1] to browse the full line-up for yourself. You can also see reviews of some of these films over...

Berlin -- The Berlin film festival's Panorama sidebar is coming back loud and proud this year with a lineup packed with films examining gender identity and the gay movement.
The 2010 Panorama opens Feb. 11 with the Russian film "Jolly Fellows," director Felix Mikhailov's look at the drag queen subculture of a Moscow club.
This year's lineup also features Cheryl Dunye's thriller "The Owls," in which aging lesbians try to get away with murder; and Jake Yuzna's "Open," a series of intertwined love stories featuring gay and trans-gendered partners.
Several of Panorama's documentary selections explores related themes -- such as Crayton Robery's "Making The Boys" about Matt Crowley's ground breaking gay play "The Boys in the Band;" "Cuchillo de Palo," Renate Costa's expose of persecution of homosexuals during the Paraguayan dictatorship and the German doc "Rock Hudson – Dark and Handsome Stranger" from directors Andrew Davies and Andre Schaefer.
