Moreover, the Us streaming giant is working on deals with MGM and Warner Bros which would mean their first-run movies will debut on Netflix at the same time as their pay-tv premieres on Foxtel Movies.
Neither has been signed but If understands the MGM arrangement is in final negotiations and WB is highly likely to pact with Netflix as its output deal with the Nine Network, worth a reported $150 million a year, has expired, and the studio needs to generate more revenue from its pay-tv and free-tv deals.

"Mission Blue" documents the life work of pioneering oceanographer Sylvia Earle, who is still jumping into the ocean at age 79. She shows us what the ocean was like when she first explored it back in the 50s. The not-for-profit film has been re-edited since playing the Berlin, Santa Barbara (our review here) and Ashland film festivals. Netflix released it in theaters August 15 backed by a massive outreach campaign to promote understanding and awareness about the threats faced by Earth's oceans. The film is both enlightening and entertaining, not unlike producer Stevens' Oscar-winning indie hit "The Cove." Stevens came by Sneak Previews for a Q & A: Anne Thompson: After I saw this movie, I admired oceanographer Sylvia Earle but I thought, “Oh my god, I can’t eat fish anymore.” What movie did you set out to make? Fisher Stevens: Originally, after I made “The Cove” with Louie Psihoyos, I was asked by Ted (Technology,...

Last year, Netflix made its first play for Oscar when it acquired the documentary "The Square," an eventual nominee for Best Documentary Feature. That didn't pan out – "20 Feet from Stardom" took the prize – but the online streaming service could well return to the race with "Mission Blue," whose environmental activism is likely to be right up the academy's alley. -Break- Oscars mystery solved: Which films are at which festivals? The film follows Sylvia Earle, a marine biologist who has broken ground for female scientists throughout her career. After falling in love with the ocean as a child, she grew up to watch pollution and overfishing by humans decimate its biodiversity. The film is directed by Robert Nixon and Fisher Stevens. Nixon previously earned an Oscar bid in 1989 for Best Live-Action Short for "Amazon Diary," and Stevens won as a producer of the feature documentary &quo...

When filmmaker-actor Fisher Stevens met Sylvia Earle for the first time, he couldn't comprehend the idea that she wasn't already on his radar. Stevens was a producer behind the exposé The Cove, about dolphin hunting in Japan, and yet was only just learning of Earle's incredible story. At 78 years old, she is one of the world's top marine biologists, explorers, and environmental advocates — a job she began in the 1950s. One glimpse of Earle in action and Fisher knew he couldn't leave her side. So he didn't. Fisher's latest directorial effort, Mission Blue (which premieres exclusive today on Netflix), is part character study, part nature film, and part activist call-to-arms, hoping to “ignite public support for a global network of marine-protected areas.” From Los Angeles, where fellow environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio was set to present a screening of Mission Blue, Fisher told Vulture about assembling Earle's life story into a...

Both a profile of the life's work of renowned oceanographer Sylvia Earle and a call to reconsider our treatment of the deep seas to which she has dedicated her life, the film will appeal to fans of "Blackfish" and the documentary work of James Cameron, who makes a few appearances here. "Mission" toggles focus between Sylvia Earle's ocean mission and her trailblazing past as a Sally Ride of the seas--Earle was the first woman to dive to such depths in the '60s, in a time where men like filmmaker Jacques Cousteau (a hero of Earle's) dominated the underwaters. Featuring: Dr. Guy Harvey, Wyland, Jim Abernethy and “Emma” (a 14-foot tiger shark); narrated by: Dr. Sylvia Earle
Dedicated to shark ambassadors and supported by a variety of foundations, this might be the only shark film to begin in Central Park. Jim Abernethy, standing at the Manhattan reservoir, is on a mission to re-engage with the public to address its misperception of sharks. Then a trio of artists descend on the Bahamas to begin their goal of re-educating others and together assemble an accessible film about the power and beauty of a creature demonized for its mechanical killing ability, mostly thanks to an actual mechanical shark, “Jaws.”
Rob Stewart’s 2006 effort, “Sharkwater,” was an impressive, difficult-to-watch documentary that sounded the call to save sharks from overfishing and heinously inhumane treatment. “This Is...

From great escapes to volcanic eruptions, a new prime minister to a raw-meat dress, we review the most dramatic moments of the year through the eyes of those with first-hand experience…
12 January: Haiti's capital is devastated by an earthquake.
By Simon Cording, rescue worker
Day to day I'm a fireman, but I'm also part of the International Search and Rescue Team. We are deployed whenever disasters take place around the world. I was at work in Manchester when I got a text message telling me to get myself ready because we were going to Haiti later that day. We always have our bags ready, so it was just a matter of grabbing my passport. It was snowing in the UK and Heathrow was closed, but we got special dispensation to fly out around midnight and the airport was opened just for us.
We were met by scenes of mass devastation at Port au Prince airport.

The inspiring lecture series tackles the unfolding oil-spill disaster.
Ted recently launched TEDx, a program for independently organized events that has usually centered on individual locales--TEDxVienna, TEDxTehran, and TEDxCalgary, for example. But on June 28th, TEDx is tackling the Bp Gulf Spill: TEDxOilSpill, in Washington, DC, will feature renewable energy and ocean experts, including oceanographer Sylvia Earle, adventurer Philippe Cousteau, and SunEdison founder Jigar Shah.
TEDxOilSpill comes with a bonus: Reports from five photographers and videographers who are currently spending a week traveling around the Gulf to document oil and water on the beach, Bp officials interfering with the media, and people affected by the disaster. The team believes that it can cover what the mainstream media cannot because it is "outside the scope of the major media networks who have to balance out immediate access with ongoing relationships with local officials." For the event, the team plans to put together documentary videos,...

Google's Ocean layer, which was introduced last year, is filled with hundreds of place marks, from natural features like coral reefs to man-made shipwrecks and geographic ridges and chasms. The data comes from organizations including the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration and the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Here's what you can do with it:
Double click on the “Explore the Ocean” layer and it will fly you to my Ocean Overview video and 10 focus areas with National Geographic video clips. Other layers include dynamic sea surface temperature, Census of Marine Life data, Marine Protected Areas, shipwrecks, dive and surf sites, Arkive images, Planet Earth footage from the BBC, and much more. You can even visit a 3-D model of the undersea laboratory Aquarius and fly to the Titanic and follow the expedition that discovered it.
Even more, they've begun work with Sylvia Earle's Mission Blue Foundation, which...

Google Earth is always a bit of a curio--appealing to the voyeur inside all of us a little, as well as tapping into some vague educational vein. It's just got a whole lot more curious though, with under-sea and WWII layers that'll really appeal to academics.
Predictably Google's touting the new oceanic layers with the line "anyone can be a desktop Cousteau" but that doesn't detract from how interesting the new material actually is. Essentially Ocean Showcase is a part curated tour of the World's ocean floors, courtesy of National Geographic, and with videos by Ng's Sylvia Earle. There's data from Noaa, information about fishes, whales and more sporty info on dive sites and surfing from suppliers like wannadive and wannasurf, and even data on World War 2 wrecks on the sea floors.
It's a multi-featured new option in Earth and it's got undeniable educational value. But perhaps not quite so...

There is a growing dialogue within the design community around how to drive sustainable behavior change in areas like health and energy. With it has come an increased awareness that often seemingly trivial elements of a design--like a smiley face on a utility bill--have a lasting impact. One of the principles that has emerged in this discussion is Priming, a psychological phenomenon in which an early stimulus influences our response to a later situation. Priming suggests that certain, seemingly random elements of an experience permeate our emotional state without us being aware and have a predictable, if unexpected, effect on our subsequent behavior.
What's particularly interesting, according to a recent study on voting behavior by Stanford's Graduate School of Business, is that Priming works best when the subjects are unaware that it's taking place. When the initial stimulus seems to have nothing to do with the subsequent experience. Here's another...
