While the idea of comedy on television has been warped by the Emmys, some shows can deliver the joke factories that once littered the TV landscape. Three-camera sitcoms may be out of vogue, but Hacks takes the best bits of those shows and applies them to a single-camera setup. Hacks shines as the best of both worlds with withering jokes and incredible performances. It’s among the most poignant and topical shows of the moment while laying track that will allow it to hold up in the decades to come. It does not hurt that Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are two of the funniest people on television.

“Hacks” is back on Max for Season 3 on May 2, and the streaming service released a new trailer for the Emmy-winning comedy on Tuesday.
In Season 3, Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) reunites with Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) after Deborah fired her at the end of Season 2 so Ava could pursue her own dreams. Now, after months apart, they’re both at different places in their careers – with the success of her special, Deborah is back on top, while Ava has enough self-respect to demand that Deborah not make fun of her appearance (yeah right) – and they’re going to try to take advantage of their momentum. “Anything I want to do, I have to do them now,” Deborah tells Ava. She has to strike while the curling iron is hot.

Gerri is heading West.
J. Smith-Cameron, the actress best known for her two-time Emmy-nominated performance as acid-tongued general counsel Gerri Kellman on “Succession,” is joining the cast of “Hacks” Season 3 as a recurring guest star, Variety reports.
Details of Cameron’s role are being kept under wraps, but it’s very easy to see her trading barbs with Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), or being polite but cutting with Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder).

Two years ago, in the Season 2 finale of “Hacks,” it appeared that Deborah Vance and her protégé Ava Daniels had reached the end of the road. Deborah (Jean Smart), a jaded Las Vegas comic, and Ava (Hannah Einbinder), the young and eager joke writer she’d hired, had together crafted a TV special that showcased Deborah’s wit and her willingness to change with the times. It was a perfect merging of what Deborah brought to the table and what she’d learned, at times unwillingly, from her young partner — and, having decided they’d done all they could together, Deborah fired Ava.
What a surprising place to arrive, after the rollicking two-year journey these characters had undergone! But there was a problem with a finale this satisfying. “People are like, ‘It felt like it could have been the end,’” recalls co-creator Jen Statsky. “And you’re like, ‘No! No!

It looks like Prime Video's cancellation spree is far from over.
Freshman dramas Harlan Coban's Shelter and The Horror of Dolores Roach have been canceled alongside With Love.
The streaming service revealed the decision on Tuesday evening, which comes right before Thanksgiving.
It's not uncommon for media conglomerates to bury this kind of news around the holiday period, so there's less awareness of it and, in turn, less pushback from their fans.
But all three shows had devoted audiences who would have probably followed them wherever they went.

There will be no new seasons of “The Horror of Dolores Roach,” “Harlan Coben’s Shelter” or “With Love” at Prime Video, the streamer announced on Tuesday.
Originally created by Aaron Mark as a one-woman play, “Empanada Loca,” Mark created, wrote, and directed the original podcast and penned the pilot script for “The Horror of Dolores Roach.” The series followed the titular character (played by Justina Machado), “who returns to a gentrified Washington Heights, where she reunites with an old stoner friend, Luis, who lets her live and work as a masseuse in the basement under his empanada shop. When the promise of her newfound stability is quickly threatened, ‘Magic Hands’ Dolores is driven to shocking extremes to survive,” reads the official description.

The cancelations continue ahead of the holiday weekend.
Amazon has axed a trio of scripted series from its Prime Video service: The Horror of Dolores Roach, Harlan Coben’s Shelter, and With Love are all ending.
The Horror of Dolores Roach and Harlan Coben’s Shelter ran for one season, while With Love is ending after two seasons.

Months after scoring his first Emmy notice for playing a fictionalized version of himself on “Jury Duty,” James Marsden is seeking recognition from the Screen Actors Guild for the same meta performance. Since he is, of course, eligible as both a solo actor and cast member, his lifetime SAG Award nominations total could soon rise to seven, with this possibly being his third Best TV Comedy Ensemble outing. Based on the fact that his previous two bids came for his work on as many programs, he now has a strong shot at blazing a trail as the first man to earn SAG ensemble mentions for three different comedy series.
According to Gold Derby’s 2024 SAG Awards odds, the actors from “Jury Duty” are comfortably ranked fifth in the comedy ensemble race with the support of 60% of our prognosticating users. On the Amazon Freevee original, Marsden ostensibly acts as a Los...

On day 67 of The Writers Guild of America strike, the cast and creatives behind three popular shows joined the picket lines across Los Angeles.
Bright and early at 9:30 a.m. over at Paramount Studios in Hollywood, there was an Ugly Betty reunion with stars Ana Ortiz and Chris Gorham joining writers Brian Tannen, Gabrielle Stanton, Sheila Lawrence, Chris Black, Henry Myers, Cameron Litvack and Tracy Poust on the special picket.
Ugly Betty, based on the hit Spanish-language novela Betty La Fea, aired for four seasons from 2006 to 2010. America Ferrera portrayed the titular Betty Suarez, an unconventional beauty whose unique sense of style doesn’t preclude her from landing a gig at a top fashion magazine. The project was developed by Silvio Horta for ABC and also starred Mark Indelicato, Eric Mabius, Tony Plana, Becki Newton and Michael Urie.

Actors Mark Indelicato and Vincent Rodriguez III describe how their characters from the Prime Video series With Love can serve as positive role models in an exclusive uInterview.
Rodriquez, who plays Henry, spoke with uInterview founder Erik Meers about how crucial the scene where Henry and Jorge, Indelicato’s character, get engaged is.
“Particularly for me, it was important for me portraying Henry to let that be a sign of love. You know because we know from season one Henry isn’t about the grand gestures, but he obviously is more than willing to do that if that’s what Jorge needed,” he said. “And so this just a part two of that and I think that’s just a testament to Henry’s commitment to you know his partners, his spouse, his loves needs. I think we can all relate to that. Like stepping out of our own personal...

Mark Indelicato and Vincent Rodriguez, who play a gay couple on Prime Video’s With Love, revealed how they broke into acting in their new uInterview.
Indelicato recalled that his grandmother was the one who pushed him to start acting.
“I was literally like taking acting classes in an acting school in Philadelphia because I wasn’t good at sports and my grandma was like he’s eccentric, we should put him in acting which is code for gay, where I come from,” Indelicato told uInterview founder Erik Meers with a laugh.
After taking classes, he landed the role of Justin Suarez in the hit TV show Ugly Betty, “they kinda just like found me there, and then I don’t know we did the pilot and then that ended up becoming my career.”
Rodriguez’s story was different from his costar’s as he didn’t start as early.

Exclusive: On June 2, Season 2 of Prime Video’s With Love premieres and Deadline has your exclusive first look at a teaser that may or may not be setting up the wedding of the year.
As series creator Gloria Calderón Kellett has teased since last season’s finale, the focus of the new episodes will be a surprise engagement leading to marriage, a pivot from the holiday theme sprinkled throughout the show’s freshman season.
With various couples in contention, who will be saying “I do?” The video above shows a special moment between Jorge Jr. (Mark Indelicato) and his boyfriend Henry (Vincent Rodriguez III) set during the Christmas celebration from the Season 1 finale. Could it be a proposal or maybe just a festive night for love declarations in front of the family after lots of egg nog? Indelicato and Rodriguez weigh in.
“That was so much fun to put together.

Wedding bells will ring in Season 2 of With Love, a heartfelt family dramedy about Portland, Oregon’s close-knit Diaz family. But before they toll, it’ll be another roller-coaster ride! Season 1 ended with a cliffhanger at the clan’s Nochebuena — Christmas Eve — celebration, when Abuela Marta (Renée Victor) found an engagement ring on the floor. This season picks up 12 hours earlier, and by the first episode’s end, we’ll find out who’ll get hitched. (Credit: Kevin Estrada/Prime Video) Will it be fun-loving eldest child Lily (Emeraude Toubia) and her cerebral love Santiago (Rome Flynn)? Her wisecracking brother Jorge Jr. (Mark Indelicato) and his dreamy beau Henry (Vincent Rodriguez III)? Or caring oncologist Sol (Isis King) and fellow doc Miles (Todd Grinnell)? Toubia warns, “There’s one couple that’s going to be crazy in love and happy, and [another will] be shattered and going separate ways.” Jorge and Henry’s bond,...

Exclusive (Updated with Jen Statsky’s comments): Filming on Season 3 of HBO Max/Universal TV hit comedy series Hacks, starring Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, has been halted due of the writers strike, Deadline has learned. According to sources, production will be on pause for the duration of the work stoppage.
It is hard for any scripted series to shoot without writing showrunners on set. This is especially true for Hacks as writing is at the heart of the show — it centers on an aging comedian Deborah Vance (Smart) and an up-and-coming writer Ava Daniels (Einbinder) who are writing together. Hacks was created by Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky, who serve as showrunners. According to WGA rules, members cannot provide any writing services, including script revisions during filming, while a strike is going on.
Update: Statsky, who won an Emmy alongside Downs and Aniello for writing the Hacks pilot episode,...
