Masked serial killers, mean-girl cheerleaders and Alicia Silverstone as a spooky aunt with a penchant for blood-filled baked goods: Welcome to the world of Perpetrator, a new gory, kitschy horror thriller from transgressive artist-turned-genre filmmaker Jennifer Reeder.
For the follow-up to her 2019’s Knives and Skin, Reeder wanted to return to many of the tropes she explored in that well-received feature debut. Again we have a tale of the darkness that lurks beneath the clipped green lawns of American suburbia, a story of missing girls and murder packed with subtext about sexual identity and cultural conventions, and it is told in a visual mash-up of surrealist imagery and 1980s-style video gore.
But for Perpetrator Reeder decided to tell “a proper horror film.”
“I think Knives and Skin was more genre-adjacent,” says Reeder, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter from her home in Chicago ahead of the Berlinale premiere. “For this one,...

"My mother wants to meet you..." Music Box Films has released an official US trailer for an indie romantic comedy titled Signature Move, from filmmaker Jennifer Reeder, with a script written by Lisa Donato and Fawzia Mirza (who stars in the film). This originally premiered back in 2017 at the SXSW Film Festival, and won the Grand Jury Prize for Best US Narrative Feature at Outfest 2017, and is finally getting a release this year after a long delay. Zaynab, a thirty-something Pakistani, Muslim, lesbian in Chicago takes care of her sweet and TV-obsessed mother. As Zaynab falls for Alma, a bold and very bright Mexican woman, she searches for her identity in life, love and wrestling. Starring Fawzia Mirza as Zaynab, along with Shabana Azmi, Sari Sanchez, Audrey Francis, Charin Alvarez, and Molly Brennan. This looks like good fun, although it seems a bit cliche exploring this kind of relationship, but...

Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre has indefinitely postponed its world premiere stage adaptation of the 2005 George Clooney-co-written film Good Night, and Good Luck, a project that had generated considerable interest on Broadway.
Steppenwolf announced yesterday that due to the coronavirus pandemic, the theater company’s 2020-21 season will consist largely of streaming, virtual productions. Good Night, and Good Luck won’t hit the Chicago stage until “a future season,” according to Steppenwolf.
Written by playwright Matt Charman based on the George Clooney-Grant Heslov screenplay for the Oscar-nominated film about the battle between Sen. Joseph McCarthy and TV journalist Edward R. Murrow, Good Night, and Good Luck had been set to begin performances in December. The play was to be directed by Anna D. Shapiro (The Minutes), with Steppenwolf’s Ian Barford leading the cast.

The disappearance of a female teenager in a small rural town in America starts an almost domino effect of problems for the people that knew her… Knives and Skin is part coming of age drama part dark thriller and it manages to feel like nothing I have seen before.
Director Jennifer Reeder definitely has a certain vision and sees it out completely, even if, for me, it fails to work almost as much as it works. Although we assume it is set in present day, it almost feels like it is set in its own little universe with the fashion, dialogue and sets there own unique thing.

Jennifer Reeder’s “Knives and Skin” will test the limits of viewer patience. The positive qualities lie in the surrealistic film’s bold cinematography, distinctive use of music, and diversity of cast, though that’s not enough to redeem this tedious viewing experience. Following a festival run that began at the Berlinale, IFC Midnight is giving the film a limited release in theaters Dec. 6, day-and-date with VOD.
In an unnamed suburban town somewhere in Illinois, the disappearance of Carolyn Harper (Raven Whitley) sends a ripple of paranoia throughout the community. The upheaval is most pronounced among the young women of the area, including drug dealer Joanna Kitzmiller (Grace Smith), goth musician Charlotte Kirtich (Ireon Roach), and cheerleader Laurel Darlington (Kayla Carter). Writer/director Jennifer Reeder has been making off-beat movies for some time but her latest feature film Knives and Skin easily takes the cake as one of the most unique hodgepodges of a movie I've seen all year.
The mystery begins when Carolyn Harper disappears. As the small town becomes engulfed in the mystery of what happened to Carolyn, the women in town, both young and old, seem to come to a collective realization that there's more wrong than simply Carolyn's disappearance.
Marika Engelhardt, Audrey Francis, Tim Hopper and Kate Arrington star.
While I can appreciate Reeder's vision of a fresh new take on the coming-of-age story and her revamp of the tired "dead girl" trope, I...

"Can you feel that?" IFC has debuted an official trailer for an indie neo-noir titled Knives and Skin, the latest from artist / filmmaker Jennifer Reeder. This first premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, and also stopped by the Tribeca, Fantasia, FrightFest, Helsinki, and Vienna Film Festivals. Knives and Skin is a mystical teen noir that follows a young girl's disappearance in the rural Midwest and its effect on teens and parents. Described as a surreal "teen fever dream", the massive ensemble indie cast in this includes Marika Engelhardt, Grace Smith, Ireon Roach, Kayla Carter, Tim Hopper, Kate Arrington, Audrey Francis, Ty Olwin, Jalen Gilbert, Raven Whitley, Emma Ladji, James Vincent Meredith, Robert T. Cunningham, Tony Fitzpatrick, and Marilyn Dodds Frank. This seems pretty cool, but not so sure it's as unique as it claims to be. Worth a look anyway. When Laura Palmer is found dead and wrapped in plastic, her tragic end ripples throughout David Lynch’s Twin Peaks to devastating effect. An outsider in Agent Cooper enters the town to decipher the circumstances surrounding her demise with a cheery disposition that never fades—a direct contrast to the idyllic scene of nature and diner pies soon torn down as though a curtain clenched by the former homecoming queen’s hands, her final wish being the exposure of what lies beneath. It’s a dark tale layered in sin, a pervasive human evil attacking everyone within reach until even the purest of heart succumbs. Lynch paints it with a stylized, hyper-real affectation highlighting society’s desperation to survive its intrinsically pessimistic machinations, the melodrama amplified until happiness becomes rendered as fantasy.
What if this wasn’t the case, though? What if Laura’s murder was instead a sacrifice that...

Chicago – Made-in-Chicago filmmaking gets the big spotlight at the Music Box Theatre on Friday, September 29th, 2017, as “Signature Move” premieres with a Red Carpet event. Walking that carpet will be the female lead, Fawzia Mirza, who portrays a closeted gay Pakistani woman negotiating love and wrestling moves.
Shot entirely in Chicago, “Signature Move” is the first production of New City Films, an off-shoot of the longtime Windy City entertainment magazine, through their “Chicago Film Project” (in collaboration with Full Spectrum Pictures). The film was written by Mirza and Lisa Donato, and directed by Jennifer Reeder. "Life, Love, and Lady Wrestling." Check out the official trailer for an indie romantic drama/comedy titled Signature Move, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Outfest Los Angeles this year. The film is about a Pakistani, Muslim, lesbian named Zaynab living in Chicago who falls for a Mexican woman. Her mother is obsessed with finding her a husband, but she copes by taking up Lucha-style wrestling which is where she meets Alma. Fawzia Mirza plays Zaynab, and Sari Sanchez plays Alma, with a cast including Shabana Azmi, Audrey Francis, Charin Alvarez, Molly Brennan, and Mark Hood. This seems like something very unique and special, with a charming side on top of all the quirky comedy. Might be a worthy discovery. Okay, Windy City, here's a unique one for you. WildClaw Theater is proud to announce Deathscribe 2011, the Fourth Annual International Festival of Radio Horror Plays. The evening will feature five live-action performances complete with musical accompaniment and Foley artists creating effects on the spot. Sounds like a really unique event.
The five selected original works of horror are listed below along with the writer and director. I'm telling you, Chi-town, this event looks like it's worth the price of admission just to see the Foley artists go at it. I initially had to research just what the hell a Foley artist is. If you don't know, it's a guy who does sounds effects with all kinds of random items (kinda like how Slipknot plays percussion on beer kegs and brake drums, etc.).
