Fourteen seasons in, Gordon Ramsay’s Fox cooking competition “MasterChef” has found a way to reinvent itself once more: pitting generation against generation in a battle that will prove whether baby boomers, Gen X, millennials or Gen Z cooks have culinary supremacy.
Debuting Wednesday at 8 p.m., “MasterChef” Season 14 will begin with the audition rounds for the contestants that qualify as millennials (a group that usually encompasses those born between 1980-1994), followed by episodes devoted to whittling down the boomers (1946-1964), Gen X (1965-1979) and Gen Z (1995-2009) competitors.
For each of these rounds, judges Ramsay, Aarón Sánchez and Joe Bastianich will be joined by a culinary expert guest judge who has been brought on this season to evaluate their own generation: Priya Krishna for millennials, Lidia Bastianich for Boomers, Nick Digiovanni for Gen Z and Christina Ha for Gen X.

“Some like it well done, almost like a pancake,” the PBS host tells People in the video above. “I like my frittata kind of runny.” More similar to a loose scramble, Bastianich doctors her eggs up simply with asparagus and scallions—a dish that reminds her of foraging for fresh ingredients as a child in Italy.

Here's the latest Austin and Texas film news.
Slackerwood isn't at San Diego Comic-Con this year but plenty of Austin people are, including local filmmaker Robert Rodriguez. Indiewire has a roundup of the Sin City: A Dame to Kill For panel with Rodriguez, co-director Frank Miller, and several cast members. The article also includes a new (short) red-band trailer for the Sin City sequel, which hits theaters August 22.We don't normally include images with Slackery News Tidbits, but the newly revealed 2014 Texas Book Festival poster (pictured right) featuring the Texas Theatre in Seguin is so gorgeous, I couldn't resist. (Someone tell me how to get one of these, please.) In addition, the festival announced eight authors that will attend -- quite an eclectic bunch, from Martin Amis to Ziggy Marley, and from Valerie Plame Wilson to chef Lidia Bastianich. Texas Book Festival runs from Oct. 25-26 ... as usual, conflicting with Austin Film Festival,...

While her son Joe Bastianich lives it up in primetime on MasterChef, Lidia Bastianich contents herself with a far more low-profile and easily kinder type of programming on PBS. Her Lidia Celebrates America series has covered a number of different special events iconic in Americana like weddings and holidays, and this time she takes a more patriotic turn (for a few countries) with the theme of "Freedom & Independence". Her 4th of July special looks not only at American freedom and independence, but the legacy of celebrations for new citizenship, the liberation of slaves, the French equivalent of our independence day (Bastille Day) with Jacques Pepin, and the similar celebration from the Philippines. It's a mix of cultures that sees Lidia trying a truly diverse collection of dishes while learning about worldwide traditions for celebrating independence.

There's always camaraderie when people gather around a table with chef Lidia Bastianich. The PBS special, "Lidia Celebrates America: Freedom and Independence" Friday, June 28 (check local listings), demonstrates that the camaraderie runs deeper than food -- it is one of ideals.
In the third of her specials, Bastianich travels to chef Jacques Pepin's Connecticut home, where they discuss Bastille Day.
In Galveston, Texas, actress Anna Deavere Smith accompanies Bastianich as she learns about Juneteenth, the celebration of Galveston's slaves being freed two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
And in New York, she celebrates Philippines Independence Day with actor Alec Mapa. All, of course, are done with food as a central theme, and Bastianich tries new dishes, including Filipino banana ketchup. When she learns that it's put on pasta, the celebrated Italian chef jokingly says, "That's sacrilegious."
Bastianich visits Monticello in Virginia, where a naturalization ceremony is held on Independence Day.

In the craziest MasterChef of the season (or two, I guess — Fox is very fond of the double-episode bonanza), two people headed home, Jessie lost a fingertip in a mandolin slicer, and Krissi emerged as a loathsome reality TV super villain for the ages. But first: a hilarious just-shy-of-insulting Sue Sylvester role call!

When I was back in college, a girl I was dating teasingly insisted that if I had to choose between her and a double chocolate cake I would have to think hard. “Nonsense, my dear,“ I told her, “You exaggerate. I would always choose you.” After a beat, I added, “With infinite regret for having lost that double chocolate cake.”
The relationship with that young lady did not last but my relationship with chocolate and, indeed, food in general certainly has. I’ve become a pretty good home cook over the past few years and I credit television for a lot of that.
I was not into cooking all that much for most of my life. Oh. I could feed myself and even – on occasion – make a really good meal. Then one day I was reading in the newspaper an article about a new show coming onto the Food Channel...

Acid-tongued celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations Holiday Show will be airing tonight, and judging by a recent blog post of Bourdain's, it's going to be a lively, ribald affair. Bourdain wrote: "What do Norah Jones, Christopher Walken, the band "****ed Up, Vegan Black Metal Chef Sam Brown, nightmare of Eastern European folklore Krampus, the Catalonian Pooping Log, Dave Arnold, chefs Lidia Bastianich, April Bloomfield, Kurt Gutenbrunner, Eder Montero, Alexandra Raij, Carlos Llaguno Morales, and the voices of Adam Richman and Andrew Zimmern have in common? They all foolishly agreed to appear in our scandalous, dark, action-packed fever dream of a Holiday Show which airs this Monday, December 12th at 10 Pm — when, presumably, the kiddies will be asleep." Even if the kiddies are dozing peacefully, the Travel Channel still felt that the stop-motion, animated short featuring Krampus (a demonic, mythical, children-punishing creature feared [...]...

Lidia Bastianich is being sued in a $5 million claim that says she made her former employee her personal slave.
Maria Carmela Farina, who has almsot 30 years of experience as a chef, says she was told in 2005 that she would be working with Bastianich in her restaurants and television shows. Farina left Italy and headed to New York where she thought she would be taking care of restaurant kitchens and creating new recipes for $600 a week. Instead, she says she ended up caring for an elderly woman for 6 years without any pay.
"[Farina] became bonded with this old lady, and didn't want to leave her like that. And she really believed that Lidia some day was going to make good on her promises," said Farina's lawyer.
Let's hope these claims aren't true, otherwise Bastianich could be in quite a bit of trouble!

One of the bigger debuts of summer 2010, Fox's "Masterchef," returns June 6 for a second round of culinary competition, pitting an unlikely group of amateur cooks against each other for quarter of a million dollars -- and Gordon Ramsay's approval.
And seated on the judges table, between the famous Scot and restaurateur Joe Bastianich, is Graham Elliot.
A James Beard award nominee barely into his 30s, proprietor of a self-titled Chicago restaurant and sandwich spin-off (Grahamwich) and "Top Chef Masters" competitor, Elliot is hardly green. It’s the Top Chef All-Stars Finale! The real one, not Part 1 of 4 where they have to cook for a king who turns out to be not a king and how is that a twist because the stakes are infinitely lower (so many chefmories)! It’s down to Richard Blais and Mike Isabella, and their Final Challenge is to “Provide a glimpse into your future as a great chef.” Richard says he dreams of someday having a restaurant where “you come in and I cook you my style of food” (it’s also a restaurant where he’s in it to win it and not there to make friends), while Mike Isabella shows the judges a crystal ball of his future self as a fat fish with a long white beard. Snow may have blanketed the country this winter, but the sight of Padma Lakshmi in a bikini could be hot enough to melt even the thickest ice. TV Guide Magazine reports exclusively that the Top Chef host recently traded bone-chilling Manhattan for the balmy Bahamas to film the four-part All-Stars finale, which Bravo will begin airing in March.

Fellow judge Gail Simmons' first reaction upon hearing of the sun-soaked locale: "Thank God! I was like, 'It's perfect—whatever you want!'" There's a new sheriff in the radio booth. The oft-mimicked and irreplaceable Christopher Walken recently tried his hand at radio, filling in for NPR's Leonard Lopate the other day. There's no cowbell, nor strange monologues about wristwatches, but it's completely delightful. This is 100% earnest Walken, chatting with friends and a slew of other guests, namely: Tony winners Jack O'Brien and Richard Easton, Zoe Kazan (Me and Orson Welles, The Private Lives of Pippa Lee), Eddie Izzard in a quick drive-by, dancers Jacques D'Amboise and Alex Shimizu, and Chef Lidia Bastianich and her mother, who turn out to be childhood friends of Walken's, from his days in Queens.

Whenever I interview someone over the phone, I inevitably hear Leonard Lopate's voice in my head and find myself posing questions the way he does -- the way he states something the interviewee has done, or is known for, or admitted to, and drops a question mark at the end in a way that's inviting, sometimes almost intimate. Maybe now when I listen to Leonard Lopate, I'll have Christopher Walken in my head after he guest hosts for Lopate this coming Monday on Wnyc.
What syllables he'll be accenting, no one knows. What strange and wonderful pauses will be created where none should be. Walken's guests will be Jack O'Brien, director and producer of the stage musical "Hairspray," followed by actress Zoe Kazan, who shared the stage with Walken in "A Behanding in Spokane." Then, dancer to dancer, Walken interviews the classically trained Jacques D'Amboise, founder of the National Dance Institute,...
