From spoofs to point-and-click adventure games, here are 10 of the most memorable unusual incarnations of Sherlock Holmes...
We don’t know a great deal about the content of the 90-minute Sherlock special set to air later this year, but one thing has emerged from the set photos and tantalising titbits of information we’ve seen so far. Sherlock Holmes and John Watson will be in nineteenth-century garb, pitching them back into the setting of the legendary detective’s original adventures: 1895, to be precise. Why that happens is as yet unclear, but all will be revealed.
For those still craving their Holmes fix in the meantime, the new film Mr. Holmes offers us Ian McKellen’s take on the character, musing upon an old case as he looks back on his long career from the vantage point of retirement. Jonny Lee Miller’s ultra-modern, Us-based Sherlock will be entering his fourth...

So this week I ended up grabbing physical copies of the comics I usually review for the website. It occurred to me, while at the shop, that the money I was spending digitally to get my comics would be better spent at the comic book shop I love so much. But then, when I got home, I remembered: oh yeah, I have to actually put these comics somewhere. I considered having a contest to give them away when I’m done reviewing them but that would seem like bribing readers and that’s not something I condone. Plus, I’m not sure I’d give away the comics I actually enjoyed. I just don’t quite know what to do with the failures and I can’t predict what’s going to be a failure reliably enough to avoid them. So, sadly, I’ll be returning to digital issues next week,...

On Tuesday, Dec. 17 (check local listings), PBS airs "How Sherlock Changed the World," a two-hour examination of the ways in which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's late-19th-century fictional consulting detective Sherlock Holmes has had an impact on crime investigation right down to the present day.
Doyle's chief inspiration is believed to have been medical lecturer and forensic science pioneer Joseph Bell, whom Doyle met in 1877 when he went to work as Bell's clerk at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary in Scotland. Bell's method of using close observation and logic to come to conclusions impressed Doyle, himself a physician, who incorporated much of this into the character of Holmes.
For example, Holmes pioneered the use of ballistics, including bullet trajectory.
In the special, Jonathan Ferguson, curator of firearms for the Royal Armouries in the U.K., says, "Sherlock anticipates the abilities that modern forensic science has, that we can actually now...

If there is one famous literary character that has made such an impact on film and television, it has to be Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle’s immortal detective. Holmes has generated such a fascination for filmmakers; he is probably more popular, and certainly more prolific, than Dracula and James Bond put together. The number of Holmes films produced since the pioneering days of the silent era is so extensive it’s unlikely the Great Detective will ever be absent from our screens for very long.
Within the last couple of years, Holmes has become fashionable again thanks to Robert Downey Jr’s cinematic reinvention of the role in two successful Guy Ritchie movies and the excellent TV series Sherlock, which effectively transports Holmes (brilliantly played by Benedict Cumberbatch) to modern day London. Oddly enough the concept is not a new one considering Holmes, like Dracula, is a man of his time...

Conan Doyle's creation isn't just any old action hero, as portrayed in A Game of Shadows; he invented forensic science
Sherlock Holmes has made the Guinness Book of Records as the most frequently portrayed literary character in film history. More than 70 actors have played the role in more than 200 films. Robert Downey Jr and Guy Ritchie reckon theirs is a more authentic take on Conan Doyle's original than the uptight, deerstalkered pipe-smoker of so many other versions. Fair enough.
Among the 60 stories, you can find a bromantic action hero if you want to. Holmes carries a gun and fires it on more than one occasion. He's an effective bare-knuckle fighter and swordsman, he's on top of obscure martial arts and he's strong enough to straighten out a bent steel poker. As a master of disguise he successfully impersonates a plumber, a bookseller, a priest, a seaman, a groom,...

There are probably more than 100 historical movies in various stages of production, and we're only talking about movies to be released this year and the next. The exact figure is probably much higher. Anyway, why do we love watching period movies? Aside from seeing famous figures come to life, we also learn important lessons from the past. Of course, some historical dramas attempt to portray events and people as accurately as possible, while others are very much fictionalized. - - -
- - - Some highly anticipated period flicks such as Bright Star, Coco Before Chanel and Inglourious Basterds have been shown already, so what other movies will be shown next?
Here's our first batch of 10 most-anticipated historical flicks, right after the jump!

Established 1974! Our news column settles back for brewskis.
Sci-fi TV
Contrary to our earlier report, Fox Will be celebrating the end of King Of The Hill with a special one-hour series finale, to be broadcast September 13. However, there are six unaired eleventh season Hill half-hours so this may account for only two of them. The others, presumably, will finally see daylight on DVD and in the syndicated rerun package.
ABC has upgraded its 13-episode V series revival. Instead of a mid-season bow, the new V will premiere November 3, airing Tuesdays, 8 p.m.
The only New genre show airing tonight is a Ghost Hunters International (“Holy Ghosts,” set in Chile, Syfy, 9 p.m.), braced between Ghi reruns. Thursday night brings two Supernatural reruns to the CW (8 & 9 p.m.): “Death Takes a Holiday” and “On the Head of a Pin.” The fall TV season—with all-new episodes of most everything—begins in less than a month.
