This week Pixar debuts “Dug Days” on Disney+: five animated shorts reuniting “Up’s” grumpy widower Carl with his excitable Golden Retriever, Dug, who can talk with a voice-activated collar. It’s a warm and funny series of misadventures for Dug (voiced by creator/director Bob Peterson), made all the more noteworthy as a result of last week’s passing of 91-year-old Ed Asner. He voiced Carl with his typical gruff exterior to hide a more affable nature. Yet it’s especially sweet to see Asner end his career on a high note in “Dug Days,” with Carl settling into a more relaxed comfort zone.
“Carl is laid back and at peace,” Peterson said. “You can tell the way he stands and the fact that he doesn’t wear his jacket; he’s doing woodworking now. I think his adventure was successful.”
But while Carl is content to relax...

According to Music by Michael Giacchino, the composer has recently recorded music for the pilot of the new Fox drama Alcatraz. While Giacchino is scoring the pilot, Andrea Datzman will be writing the music for the rest of the season. Datzman previously co-scored last year’s J.J. Abrams-produced NBC drama Undercovers with Chris Tilton after Giacchino also scored the pilot. Alcatraz is created by Elizabeth Sarnoff (Lost, Deadwood) and stars Sarah Jones as a San Francisco detective involved in a grisly homicide case that takes her to America’s most infamous prison, where her prime suspect becomes an inmate who died more than 30 years before. Jorge Garcia (Lost), Sam Neill (Jurassic Park) and Robert Forster (Jackie Brown) are co-starring. Bryan Burk and director Jack Bender (Lost) are producing alongside J.J. Abrams through his Bad Robots production company. The pilot is co-written by Sarnoff, Steven Lilien & Bryan Wynbrandt (Kyle Xy...

[Our thanks to film critic, music expert and GhibliWorld.com contributor Marco Bellano for conducting an extensive interview with award winning soundtrack composer Michael Giacchino.]
While staying at the V International Film Music Conference “Ciudad de Úbeda”, it was quite surprising to find Michael Giacchino walking in the crowd just like a simple film music fan, as the many others that gathered in the little Andalusian city. Always accompanied by his attendant and trusted orchestrator Andrea Datzman, Giacchino has an easy-going appearance, and seems younger than he really is (he was born in 1967 in Riverside, New Jersey). However, when he gets on the podium and conducts a symphonic orchestra, the powerful and authoritative sound that emerges from his simple and clear gesture definitely unveils the true nature of his artistic personality: he is a composer with vast and solid competences, that manages to spontaneously join a true affection for cinema with a distinguished talent in creating musical atmospheres and textures.
