- Umpired the 1981 National League Division Series, five National League Championship Series (1972, 1975, 1979, 1984, 1987), four World Series (1971, 1978, 1982, 1986), and four All-Star Games (1965, 1974, 1980, 1985).
- He was at first base for game 6 of the 1986 World Series between the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox, when Mookie Wilson's ground ball rolled between Bill Buckner's legs. The New York Mets won the that game and game 7 to win the World Series.
- Served in U.S. Navy, 11 August 1950-10 June 1954.
- Umpired first major league game 15 September 1963; umpired final major league game 1 October 1989.
