2024 is half over and while we have seen some brilliant horror films come out this year I don’t think it has been such a great year for the genre. With most horror films flopping at the box office and the dreaded Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel coming out it all felt wrong. But don’t worry because I have picked out the 10 best horror films that have come out this year. I haven’t ranked the films in the article and I will update the list as more films come out.
Late Night with the Devil (AMC+ & Prime Video Add-On)
Late Night with the Devil is a supernatural horror film written and directed by Colin and Cameron Cairnes. The 2024 film is set in 1977 and it follows the story of Jack Delroy, a talk show host on Night Owl which was watched by the insomniacs all around the country.

In my latest video review I sit down to check out Late Night With the Devil, a “found footage” movie following a live television broadcast in 1977 which goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation’s living rooms.
October 31, 1977. Johnny Carson rival Jack Delroy hosts a syndicated talk show ‘Night Owls’ that has long been a trusted companion to insomniacs around the country. A year after the tragic death of Jack’s wife, ratings have plummeted. Desperate to turn his fortunes around, Jack plans a Halloween special like no other, unaware he is about to unleash evil into the living rooms of America
Directed by Cameron Cairnes and Colin Cairnes, Late Night With the Devil stars David Dastmalchian, Laura Gordon and Ian Bliss. The film is available to watch on Shudder, in the US, now.

Late Night with the Devil is a horror movie directed by Cameron Cairnes and Colin Cairnes. It stars David Dastmalchian and Laura Gordon.
Straight from Australia comes this original film, shot on a shoestring budget, yet through creativity, it manages to yield impressive results. It may not be the movie of your lifetime, but it executes well with the limited resources at its disposal.
Plot
Unusual events occur during a Halloween night talk show, leaving viewers baffled.
About the Movie
Intriguing, to just the right extent. This film lasts the same duration as a late-night show, and during the commercial breaks, it reveals what happens behind the scenes, beyond the televised spectacle.

David Dastmalchian was raised in a religious household where “everything was ‘the Devil’s work’” and he was constantly told not to open myself up to anything evil that could come in. “Fast-forward to me as a grown-up and I’m telling my wife not to order a cursed Ouija board off the Internet,” the actor notes. He’s also hosted seances, been published in “Fangoria,” penned the graphic novel series “Count Crowley: Reluctant Midnight Monster Hunter” for Dark Horse Comics and served as the brand ambassador for a line of caskets.
And, of course, starred in the hottest horror movie of the year as the lead in “Late Night With the Devil.” The indie feature from brothers Cameron and Colin Cairns was released by IFC in theaters, where it’s already made a robust $10 million. And as of today, it’s available to stream on the horror network Shudder.

The 1970s– an era of “unrest and mistrust, fear and violence,” says the opening minutes of Colin and Cameron Cairnes’ Late Night with the Devil, accurately reflecting the viewpoint of the burgeoning moral panic of the time. Fear mongering-ish as that sounds, after a decade of Christianity in crisis mode– including a 1966 Times cover asking, “Is God Dead?”– and the “Satanic” cult murders by the Manson Family in 1969, the ’70s were a time of peak (at least until then) obsession with all things occult, planting the seeds and ultimately leading to what would be known as the full-blown Satanic Panic in the decade to follow. The devil was believed to be real, and he was to be feared, expelled, and/or worshiped– in real life and reflected in dozens and dozens of horror films and countless categories of other media within that era.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Dan Baker on Wbgr-fm on March 22nd, 2024, reviewing “Shirley,” featuring Regina King as 1960s/70s Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm. Streaming on Netflix since March 22nd.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Ms. King portrayed Congresswoman Chisholm as she launches an impossible dream of running for the Democratic nomination for president in 1972. Behind Ms. Chisholm was her husband Conrad (Michael Cherrie), her advisors Arthur Hardwick (Terrence Howard) and Mac Holder (Lance Reddick), as well as colleagues Congressman Walter Fauntroy (André Holland) and future politico and congresswoman, Barbara Lee (Christina Jackson). The result of her run are obviously known, but it’s the insider process that is the guts of this impossible dream.
”Late Night with the Devil” is in select theaters on March 22nd. See local listings. Featuring David Dastmalchian, Rhys Auteri, Ian Bliss, Laura Gordon and Ingrid Torelli. Co-written and directed by Colin and Cameron Cairnes.

Review: I’ve always had a fondness for late-night talk shows and their host. While I’m more of a Letterman and Conan guy, the shadow of Carson looms largely over anyone in that space. So the concept of Late Night With The Devil immediately appeals to me. They would always have a slew of guests, ranging in their celebrity status, all with the purpose of popping a rating. But what if one of those guests were actually able to prove the existence of the supernatural? The possibilities are endless.
Following the night that a struggling late-night show was able to prove the existence of a supernatural presence (or were they?), Late Night With The Devil is like a slow descent into Hell. I always love a horror film that brings you on...

Being an avid fan of “old school” horror, I try to keep an open mind to the newer films, even the “sub-genres”. One of those is the “found footage” chiller that probably established itself with its biggest hit The Blair Witch Project. It opened the floodgates for jittery, shakey phony home video slightly “tweaked” via software trickery. The multiplexes are so bombarded that I almost dread a new one. Oh, but an Aussie filmmaking duo has come up with a new “twist’ that keys right into another bit of nostalgia: classic TV not from the “golden age’ of the 50s, but the often “schlocky” stuff of the 70s. Plus it’s not from daytime or prime time (8 to 11 Pm Est). I mean what kid 47 years ago wouldn’t try to sneak downstairs to the massive 19-inch console TV, sit close to the screen so you can keep the volume low...

In “Late Night With the Devil,” David Dastmalchian plays ’70s late night host Jack Delroy, who tries to salvage his show’s falling ratings with a desperate stunt: Getting a possessed teenager to channel the devil on live TV.
In the found-footage movie, we see the doomed broadcast and “never before seen” behind-the-scenes shots as things begin to deteriorate onstage and off.
On Halloween night, he invites Lilly D’Abo (Ingrid Torelli), a girl who was rescued from a satanic cult, and her medium and handler June Ross-Mitchell (Laura Gordon), along with a psychic and a skeptic.

Late Night with the Devil is the most fun that I have had with a horror film in a hot minute. It really finds that space in the Venn diagram that encompasses popcorn horror, clever writing, and an innovative story. I love discovering movies like this. I would file Deadstream, The House of the Devil and Saint Maud on the same shelf. Not because they are similar in premise or tone, but more because of the experience I had watching them. It’s so fun to go into an indie horror film and discover something new. A story that hasn’t been told that isn’t part of a bigger franchise. I love higher budget, more mainstream horror, but it’s films like this that give us more of an opportunity to experience something unexpected. I love that.

One of the most acclaimed horror movies of the year opens this week: "Late Night with the Devil," a mockumentary from filmmakers Colin Cairnes and Cameron Cairnes, starring David Dastmalchian. Dastmalchian has built a solid career as a supporting character actor in films like "The Dark Knight," "Prisoners," and "Dune," but "Late Night with the Devil" gives him the chance to shine in a lead role. The actor plays Jack Delroy, host of the late-night 1970s "Tonight Show"-like talk show "Night Owls with Jack Delroy."
The film takes the form of footage from one of Jack's shows — specifically a show that aired on Halloween night in 1977. Desperate to improve his slipping ratings, Jack has put together a special episode where his guests include a parapsychologist (Laura Gordon) and her patient, a teenage girl named Lilly (Ingrid Torelli). Lilly is the only survivor of a suicidal satanic cult, and to make things extra disturbing,...

Late Night With the Devil, the latest film from Cameron and Colin Cairnes, the team who made 100 Bloody Acres and Scare Campaign, opens with scenes of violence caught in the lens of the TV camera. As we watch, Michael Ironside tells us about America in the 1970s, and then segues into the career of radio man turned late night TV host Jack Delroy.
His show, the syndicated Night Owls, has run a close second to Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show, but never managed to catch up to it in the ratings wars. And since the death of Jack’s wife Madeline his life and his ratings, seem to be in free fall. With sweeps week kicking off on Halloween Eve and his career on the line,...

The Devil has always thrived in chaos, and so there’s no better or more natural place for him to appear than on live TV. That goes double for the live TV of the early ’70s, when an “anything goes” attitude ruled the airwaves, the horrors of the Vietnam War beamed into a hundred million American homes every night, and the devotional trust that people still placed in news anchors and talk show hosts was starting to grow poisoned by the cynical pursuit for higher ratings.
In that light, it was only going to be a matter of time before “Night Owls with Jack Delroy” turned into hell on earth, especially after Jack’s non-smoker of a wife died of terminal lung cancer and the widowed host became more determined than ever to catch up with Johnny Carson. Jack would make any sacrifice necessary to win his midnight time slot,...

"Late Night with the Devil" is one of the best horror movies you'll see this year — a clever, effective, and most of all scary mockumentary that recreates the era of '70s late-night talk shows with a nightmarish twist. What if a "Tonight Show" clone suddenly succumbed to demonic possession — live on the air? "Late Night with the Devil" has the answer, suggesting that a little hellfire can be good for ratings.
Written and directed by Colin Cairnes and Cameron Cairnes, "Late Night with the Devil" introduces us to Jack Delroy (played by a very committed David Dastmalchian), a wannabe Johnny Carson who hosts "Night Owls with Jack Delroy," a New York City-based late night variety and talk show struggling to stay afloat in the late-night ratings wars. It's Halloween night, and Jack has a special show planned, in which two of his guests are a parapsychologist (Laura Gordon) and her patient,...

By taking the tricks and tropes associated with films about occult goings-on and applies them in the context of a 1970s talk show, Australian writer-directors Cameron and Colin Cairnes have conjured up a horror flick that’s devilishly fun. Late Night with the Devil sets the scene with a montage, authoritatively narrated by Michael Ironside. Day after day, news programs report on the Watergate scandal, the Manson family, and other offenses as if on loop. Perhaps that’s why there’s such an appetite for the likes of Johnny Carson—well-groomed, quick-witted men who who almost nightly offer a sense of order and familiarity to an increasingly anxious populous, a feeling that maybe things will be alright after all.
Jack Delroy (David Dastmalchian) is no Johnny Carson. His quaint Midwestern charms earned his late-night show, Night Owls with Jack Delroy, a respectable following, but it was clear that he would...

David Dastmalchian has starred in a string of successful films, like Oppenheimer, recently. The American actor has been a staple face in various superhero franchises throughout his career, but his latest film could not have been farther from the genre.
Dastmalchian’s new film, Late Night With the Devil, adds a new flavor to the horror genre. Dubbed one of the best indie horror films of late, it has been winning accolades and rave reviews, including from the master, Stephen King himself. Even though it breathes life into a tired and overworked category of films, Late Night With the Devil has one major flaw.

Just when it feels like the found footage horror genre has run out of steam, some upstart filmmaker always seems to swing in with a bold new variation on the concept. According to the critics who saw the film at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival (who collectively awarded the movie a perfect 100-percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes), Australian directors Cameron and Colin Cairnes have done precisely this with "Late Night with the Devil."
The film claims to be a master tape of a fictional late-night talk show titled "Night Owls with Jack Delroy." On this particular episode, aired on Halloween night in 1977, Delroy (David Dastmalchian), a ho-hum comedian desperate to juice his sagging ratings, brings on parapsychologist Dr. June Ross-Mitchell (Laura Gordon) to promote her latest book on Satanic cults. Appearing with her is Lilly (Ingrid Torelli), the only survivor of a mass suicide brought on by some kind of demonic hysteria.

Ahead of the acclaimed horror flick’s arrival later this month, check out the full-length trailer for Late Night With The Devil.
There are plenty of reasons why we’re fully on board for the upcoming horror flick, Late Night With The Devil.
It has a retro 1970s feel that looks incredible. It also has the wonderful David Dastmalchian (who often appears in smaller but memorable roles) getting a leading role. Then there’s the festival buzz which has been very strong indeed. Oh, and there’s also the fact that horror hasn’t really found its feet yet here in 2024.
Whilst it wasn’t terrible, Night Swim didn’t have anywhere near the same impact that Blumhouse’s traditional year-opening horror has in the past, and we feel like we’re waiting for the first truly rousing chiller of the year to get the cinematic scares up and running.

A film that is truly transfixing from its very first frame to the moment its eerie end credits roll, Colin Cairnes and Cameron Cairnes' Late Night with the Devil was one of my favorite screenings at last year's Overlook Film Festival. Taking place during a late-night talk show one fateful (and frightful) Halloween in 1977, Late Night with the Devil features a powerfully poignant performance by the always-great David Dastmalchian, and ahead of the film's theatrical release on March 22nd via IFC Films and its April 19th streaming release on Shudder, we have a look at the movie's chilling trailer and fiery poster that warns you to "not adjust your set."
Synopsis: October 31, 1977. Johnny Carson rival Jack Delroy hosts a syndicated late night talk show ‘Night Owls’ that has long been a trusted companion to insomniacs around the country. A year after the tragic death of Jack’s wife, ratings have plummeted.

"How could you let it happen, Jack?" IFC Films has revealed the full official trailer for acclaimed indie horror thriller Late Night with the Devil, made by the Australian filmmakers Cameron & Colin Cairnes. This first premiered at last year's SXSW Film Festival, playing at tons of other festivals around the world. Tune in this spring. A live television broadcast back in 1977 goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation's living rooms. Presented as found footage. Set in the 1970s, the film follows charismatic late-night host Jack Delroy (portrayed by the great iconoclast David Dastmalchian), who, in an effort to boost the ratings of his once hugely popular "Night Owls", has invited an eerie tableau of guests for his Hail Mary of an occult-focused Halloween broadcast. Dastmalchian stars as the host, joined by Laura Gordon, Ingrid Torelli, Ian Bliss, Fayssal Bazzi, and Rhys Auteri. All the reviews and buzz for this...

Imagine flipping through the channels to land on a 1970s late-night talk show. The charismatic host flashes a winning smile, the audience is buzzing with anticipation, and there’s an electric promise of groundbreaking television in the air. This is the seductive setting of Late Night With The Devil, where what starts as an ambitious attempt to boost ratings by hosting a live séance spirals into an unforeseen horror showcase.
Starring the ever-versatile David Dastmalchian, this horror flick promises a blend of nostalgia and nightmare, setting it apart in the crowded field of supernatural cinema.

Found-footage horror — that thing you never want to see again, until once every couple years someone finds a fresh angle — meets “The King of Comedy,” of all things, in “Late Night With the Devil.” The third feature from enterprising Aussie siblings Colin and Cameron Cairnes kicks up a notch their flair for bringing novel twists to familiar genre tropes, by positing occult mayhem during a live broadcast of a 1970s network talk show.
The resulting mix of vintage Me Decade showbiz cheese and “Exorcist”-y demonic doings is distinctive, not to mention deftly handled by the brothers as both writers and directors. Well-received at its SXSW premiere, this clever high-concept gambit should raise its makers’ profile, likely inviting some Hollywood offers — which one suspects they’d be open to, given this is their first project set (though not produced) in the U.S. rather than on home turf.

Having a premiere at SXSW last year turned out to be a charm for directing duo The Daniels, and although awards lightning most likely won’t strike this year for this somewhat niche horror pastiche, hopefully its creators — Australian double-act the Cairnes brothers — will get their own media moment as a result. That Late Night With the Devil is one for the myriad genre festivals that abound internationally is a no-brainer, but the Cairneses deserve a bit more consideration than that for their film’s wry engagement with U.S. history and pop culture, despite shooting their New York-set film entirely in Melbourne.

The late night talk show has been a television staple as far back as the late ‘40s, though its form would crystalize and surge in popularity in the ‘60s and ‘70s. The format relied on humor; it’s late at night, so why not relay the news or conduct interviews with biting wit for entertainment? Late Night with the Devil captures the chaotic energy of a late night show, embracing the irreverent comedy and stress of live television with a pastiche style. It’s a clever trojan horse for a surprising horror movie that goes full throttle on unhinged demonic mayhem.

There have been a number of great sports dramas and documentaries released over the past few years, exploring the pressure associated with competitive potential and the ease with which young athletes can lose control or find themselves controlled by others. Streamline is being sold as such a film, and its twee final credits sequence suggests that is indeed what it aspires to, yet despite the enthusiasm with which it mines the clichés of the genre it manages to say very little about swimming and absolutely nothing new about growing up as a teenage boy in a hypermasculine environment.
The boy in question is Benjamin (Levil Miller), who is known simply as Boy to those close to him, perhaps because he’s the youngest member of his family. His father (Jason Isaacs) is in prison, his mother (Laura Gordon) struggling to parent as she deals with the residual trauma of domestic violence,...

"Have you thought about some kind of rebirth?" ShineHouse Group has unveiled an official trailer for an indie drama titled Undertow, which originally premiered at the Melbourne Film Festival in 2018. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Australian filmmaker Miranda Nation, and is a complex, emotional story of two women whose lives become dangerously enmeshed following a pregnancy tragedy. Struggling to accept the loss of her stillborn baby, Claire becomes suspicious of her husband's relationship with a feisty young woman named Angie. The emotional Aussie indie film stars Olivia Dejonge, Josh Helman, Laura Gordon, Rob Collins, and Darci McDonald. This looks good but it seems to dip a bit too much into the intensity and outrage. We would've heard more about this by now if it was really good. Worth a look anyway. Here's the official US trailer (+ two posters) for Miranda Nation's Undertow, direct from YouTube: Undertow...
