Esther May Campbell’s debut feature operates betweens social and poetic realism and unleashes some extraordinary imagery
Now Andrea Arnold has gone west with American Honey, who’s coming up behind her? This delicate debut suggests it might yet be Esther May Campbell, a writer-director who here ventures Bristol way, digs around at the intersection of social and poetic realism, and emerges with several extraordinary images alongside handfuls of arthouse filler. Campbell’s mapping of the uncertain terrain around three young siblings left directionless by distant/absent parents is frequently arresting: golf balls and butterflies erupt inside the frame, while a wild-haired old man pursues nervy Ewan (James Stuckey) in one terrifyingly Lynchian development.

If nothing else, Esther May Campbell deserves praise for doing something different with an overused staple of British cinema. Given how inexpensive and popular among critics’ social realist cinema has become it would be tempting to make Light Years just another kitchen sink drama. With its domestic setting the film finds three working-class children neglected […]

★★☆☆☆ "What do you miss about mum?" Rose (Zamira Fuller), the youngest daughter of three, asks her father, Dee (Muhammet Uzuner). "I used to swim in her wake," he says. Premiering at last year's Venice Film Festival, British writer and director Esther Campbell's debut feature Light Years is a meditation on imminent loss, absence and coping. Living in a large house in the countryside surrounded by scaffolding, Dee is having difficulty keeping his attention on the kids. The mother (musician Beth Orton) is confined to a nursing home with Alzheimer's and Rose misses her dreadfully.

Belle Amie have claimed that they were glad to leave the X Factor when they did, because they didn’t feel like the public were being allowed to see what they were really capable of.
The girl group were eliminated from the ITV show after four weeks but speaking to The News Of The World, as they promote their new single ‘Girls Up’, the ladies explained that the departure was a good thing for their career.
Sophia Wardman, 23, said:
“The show was a great experience but it didn’t really showcase us. We weren’t singing the songs we wanted to sing, weren’t wearing what we wanted to wear. We were restricted so it was kind of a relief for me to get off the show so we could start doing what we wanted to do.

In the least shocking split news of recent years, Geneva Lane has announced that she is leaving Belle Amie.
The 20 year old Guilford lass, who was recently linked to one Direction singer Zain Malik, joined the band after auditioning for The X Factor last year. Simon Cowell asked her and three other singers – Rebecca Creighton, Esther Campbell and Sophia Wardman – to form a girl-group at bootcamp and though they made the live shows, they were eliminated in week four of the competition.

X Factor girl group Belle Amie have denied rumours that they have split and insist that in actuality, they are planning a stint in the studio to record some new music.
The vocal harmony group put together by Simon Cowell consists of Geneva Lane, Rebecca Creighton, Esther Campbell and Sophia Wardman and took to Twitter last month to reveal their plans to followers.
They tweeted:
“Be excited guys, Belle Amie will be recording some new original material in the New Year, spread the word. This is just the beginning. There are a few surprises and shockers on the way but it will all be worth it. Watch out world.”
Returning to the social networking site yesterday, Geneva added:
“Things are looking bright, Belle Amie have had their first song sent in. We start recording next week.”
Rebecca also denied reports that bitching and fighting (and wine glass smashing) had caused the group to split.

Belle Amie’s cover of Bananarama’s ‘Venus’ has been slammed by the band as “lame”
Singer Keren Woodward explained she was unimpressed with the ‘X Factor’ girlband’s version of their 1986 hit ‘Venus’, and didn’t realise it was possible to make the song sound so bad.
The singer said: “I really hate to b***h and I hate to sort of slate people, I thought it’s really difficult to make that song sound lame, but they kind of managed it.
“I didn’t think it was possible. I mean, I do that song week in, week out, and whatever mood you’re in, however you’re feeling, you can’t help but belt that one out. Anyway, I didn’t know you can.”

Things got feisty between the Belle Amie girls as they rehearsed for last night’s live X factor show.
The girl group were eliminated earlier in the series, but were invited back to sing in the final 16 group performance yesterday.
On Thursday, at the London studios, insiders say a vicious row erupted between singers Sophia Wardman and Esther Campbell. The argument culminated in Sophia flinging a wine glass and cutting her bandmates head.
A source told The Mirror:
“The argument came out of nowhere. It was pretty vicious. Sophia had the glass in her hand and flung it really hard towards Esther.
“The girls have only known each other since they were put together in the band by the judges at bootcamp, so it’s not like they are long-standing friends.
“But no one knew there was such bad feeling between them.
“Sophia really didn’t mean to hit Esther with the glass.

After being in the bottom two last week and singing a rather boring song last night, many people had assumed that tonight would be Belle Amie’s last X Factor appearance.
However going against Simon Cowell seems to have worked for the girls and the British public obviously love a bit of rebellion, because tonight the manufactured girl band weren’t even in the sing off.
On Saturday night’s show it was revealed that the group, consisting of Rebecca Creighton, Esther Campbell, Geneva Lane and Sophia Wardman, had refused to sing Footloose as directed by their mentor and instead chose ‘I’ll Stand By You’ by The Pretenders and Girls Aloud.
After their performance Cheryl Cole raved:
I have to say you’ve got great taste in music. It’s a great song choice, it’s very sentimental for me, because I feel like I want to be up there singing it with you.

Belle Amie are apparently "stressing" about their song choice for this week's X Factor. Sophia Wardman, Geneva Lane, Esther Campbell and Rebecca Creighton were in the bottom three last week and the final decision over this week's routine is still apparently "up in the air". Simon Cowell has defended his decision to form two new groups, from solo X Factor entrants at the show’s bootcamp.
In the era of teen sensation Justin Bieber, Cowell recognised the appeal of a cute teenage idol and was seen on last week’s show, asking some of the best young male singers to form a boyband.
He asked former soloists Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Zain Malik and Niall Horan to form 1 Direction and faced with a lack of talented girl groups, Simon also suggested that Rebecca Creighton, Esther Campbell, Geneva Lane and Sophia Wardman advance to judges houses as vocal quartet, Belle Amie.
Nicole Scherzinger told the singers: “We thought of each of you as individuals and we thought you were too talented to let go of. We thought it would be a great idea to have two separate groups.”

X Factor hopefuls Diva Fever appeared on today’s This Morning and admitted that they aren’t entirely behind Simon Cowell’s decision to create two new groups out of solo auditionees at bootcamp.
The Scottish duo were featured on last night’s show, singing Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance for Simon, Louis Walsh and Nicole Scherzinger.
Afterwards Louis exclaimed “They are so likeable!” and the rendition was enough to win them a place in Simon Cowell’s judge’s houses stage.
However, later in the day Cowell decided that their weren’t enough talented groups at bootcamp and asked solo entrants Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Harry Styles & Zain Malik to form a boyband named 1 Direction and Rebecca Creighton, Esther Campbell, Geneva Lane and Sophia Wardman to join forces and become ‘Belle Amie.’

X Factor hopefuls Rebecca Creighton, Esther Campbell, Geneva Lane and Sophia Wardman faced a roller coaster of emotions at bootcamp this year.
The singers had all auditioned as solo singers and on tonight’s show we saw their hopes dashed, as Simon Cowell revealed that they had not reached the judges houses stage of the show.
However, in true X Factor style and for maximum shock value, Simon, Louis and guest judge Nicole Scherzinger later called them back to the stage and asked if the five girls would be interested in forming a new girl group on the show.
Nicole said: “We thought of each of you as individuals and we thought you were too talented to let go of. We thought it would be a great idea to have two separate groups.”
Simon told the gobsmacked singers: “We’ve decided to put you both through to Judges’ Houses. This is a lifeline.

We know we’ve already brought you the rumoured final 12 for this year’s X Factor but in case anyone’s interested, here is the final 32 through to judges houses.
These 32 acts have all attended the final audition round of the ITV show and will be seen singing in Australia, England, Spain and Ireland on next week’s show.
In 2010, Dannii Minogue will be mentoring the boys, Cheryl Cole has the girls, Simon Cowell will look after the groups and Louis Walsh has been landed with the older acts.
There is a slight change to the categories this year. As usual we will have our boys, girls, groups and overs – however the age limit for the older group is now over 28, so some singers who would previously have been in that category, have managed to win themselves a place in the much cooler, younger groups.

Liam Payne was seen making his X Factor comeback on Saturday night’s show, but insiders report that though his audition went well, Liam wasn’t allowed to continue through bootcamp as a solo singer.
The 16 year old singer made it as far as the judges houses stage on the 2008 series of the show, but was sent home by Simon Cowell who claimed that he was too young to cope with fame. When he returned this year and sang Michael Buble’s Cry Me A River for the panel, Simon stood by his decision saying.
“I said to you then, come back two years time and you’ll be a different person. I got it right.”
After receiving four yeses from Simon, Louis Walsh, Cheryl Cole and Natalie Imbruglia, Liam breezed through to the next round but things didn’t go as expected once he got there.

Sexy blonde Rebecca Creighton impressed the judges when she auditioned for The X Factor in Dublin.
The 18 year old from Tallaght in Ireland explained to the panel:
“I’m an unemployed hairdresser as I wanted my whole focus to be on music.”
She then sang Pixie Lotts’ Cry Me Out and Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi.
Cheryl Cole heaped praise on the teenager saying:
“I just want to say thank you for making this day a little more exciting. I think you’ve got a brilliant voice.”
After Simon gave Rebecca a yes, Louis enthused:
“That is his first yes of the day. Thank you for coming in. You may have saved the day for me. ”
Later that evening, as guest judge Katy Perry finished up at the audition venue, she took to Twitter to praise Rebecca. She tweeted:
“There’s One star today and her name is Rebecca! Get It Girl!

X Factor judges were so desperate to discover a decent group for this year’s series, that they manufactured three bands from solo auditionees during the bootcamp stage.
Simon Cowell and Co found a real lack of talented girl groups trying out for the panel, so asked Rebecca Creighton, Sophia Wardman, Geneva Lane and Esther Campbell to join together and form a yet unnamed band. They also plucked Sam Grierson from group Dice and asked her to join Husstle, which consists of her, Carol Mounsey, 29, Stacey Camps, 26, Jessica Kozi, 25, and Alannah Maggs.
Sam hit the headlines last year, after she romped with Jack Tweed just months after his wife Jade Goody died. Simon Cowell hated Sam’s band Dice but liked the glamour girl.
An X Factor source told The News Of The World:
“Simon adores the way Sam looks. He is hoping that she will give Husstle the style...

Simon Cowell has assembled two new groups at this year’s X Factor bootcamp.
Not happy with the ensembles who entered the show, Cowell created a new girl group out of four female entrants and a new boyband out of five solo singers. Both bands are said to have made the judges houses stage of the competition.
The boys group consists of Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik. 16 year old Liam is a familiar face, he made it as far as the judges house stage in 2008, in fact Simon Cowell dropped last year’s finalist Rikki Loney to take him there. The music mogul later sent him home, claiming that the Wolverhampton boy was too young but when the teenager showed up again at the Birmingham auditions this year he blew Simon and co away.

Volunteers offer Disney and Pixar favourites to youngsters traumatised by natural disasters in Haiti
Dusk falls, the insects bite and a makeshift open air cinema screen is set up. Scores of children gather and are transfixed by the flickering images that, for a short time at least, help them forget their troubles.
While the aid agencies are trying to make sure youngsters in Haiti have access to shelter, food and water, British volunteers are offering comfort through the medium of film.
Led by film enthusiasts from the Bristol's leftfield Cube Cinema, the project involves showing feature films and messages of support from children in Britain. The idea is eventually to help youngsters in Haiti make their own films, which will then be sent back to Bristol, forging a cinematic link between Britain and the earthquake-hit Caribbean country.

The 2009 BAFTA Award nominees have been announced and Slumdog Millionaire, along with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, leads the way with 11 nominations with The Dark Knight close behind with nine. However, at the top of the pile it is immediately noticeable that The Dark Knight did not get a Best Film nomination as all the usual suspects are there, but The Reader is added to the pack as one of its five nominations. Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) is considered a lead actor at the BAFTAs and earns a nomination in the category while he is competing Stateside for a Supporting nom. I believe he is more of a lead actor than a supporting, but Fox Searchlight obviously sees the supporting category as the easier place to get him a nomination and has pushed him in the category as a result. Other than that, the usuals are there with Brad Pitt earning a nomination,...
