Let us forego our consideration of the green unicorn problem and, obeying the dictates of the season, direct our attention to that jolly old elf, Santa Claus.
First, we’ll follow that which is not exactly required but is nonetheless highly recommended and seek to link the elf to comic books, this allegedly being a column devoted to the aforementioned magazines.
So: is Santa a comics character?
Yes and no. Research indicates that he and his cohort of elves and reindeer have never been awarded their own regular title. You could never find, tucked into your Christmas stocking, something like “The Adventures of Santa Claus” or if the comic was published by Disney, “Santa’s Funnies and Stories” or, if it appeared in the 60s and bore a Marvel colophon, maybe “The Stupendous Santa.” Santa has made – I’m taking a shot in the dark here – tens of thousands of...

Silicon Valley, Season 3, Episode 3: “Maleant Data Systems Solutions”
Written by Donick Cary
Directed by Charlie McDowell
Airs Sundays at 10pm on HBO
At the end of last week’s very funny but somewhat stuffed episode, Richard’s plan to circumvent Jack’s wishes had been discovered and he was in danger of being fired for his insubordination/fraud. This week, Richard retains some of his cunning in negotiations with Jack. Part of what makes Thomas Middleditch so funny as Richard is that he has resisted any kind of major character evolution. Richard never became a confident leader, and his position as CEO of Pied Piper was solely based on the fact that he created the product, not any kind of leadership skills. In “Maleant Data Systems Solutions,” Silicon Valley starts to present a version of Richard who’s actually capable of leading a company in a successful direction.

Finally, the day we’ve all been waiting for has arrived. No, I’m not talking about any of that “Oscars” silliness, or Neil Patrick Harris taking on hosting duties. No, I’m talking about the 2015 Razzie Awards, in which all the crap of the crop from this past year in cinema at last gets its well-deserved comeuppance.
This year’s “winners” are a particularly disreputable bunch, with Kirk Cameron leading the pack for his atrocious Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas and Michael Bay reliably racking up more Golden Raspberry Awards for Transformers 4: Age of Extinction. It was a strangely good night for Ben Affleck, who took home the “Redeemer” Award for turning his career around from Gigli to Gone Girl, and a bad one for Cameron Diaz, who lost out in Worst Supporting Actress for Annie (which still, deservedly, won Worst Remake, Rip-off or Sequel) but received...

The movie also won for Worst Actor, Worst Screen Combo and Worst Screenplay. Even though Michael Bay's "Transformers: Age of Extinction" was nominated for seven awards, it walked way with only two, including a Worst Director award for Bay. The 2015 Razzies "winners" have been announced, leaving the "losers" to breathe a collective sigh of relief -- because, well, who the hell wants to win a Razzie?
You see, for the past 35 years, on the eve of the Oscars, the Golden Raspberry Awards has honored the very best of the very worst movies released the previous year -- and this year's competition was nothing short of spectacular...ly tragic. Everyone -- from Razzie favorites Nicolas Cage and Michael Bay to newcomers Nicola Peltz and Gaia Weiss -- was in the crosshairs, but only 10 took home Razzies.
Here then, ladies and gentlemen, is the full list of winners from the 2015 Razzie Awards.

The Academy just announced the best in cinema of 2014 and now, here comes the Razzie saluting the worst! Michael Bay's "Transformers: Age of Extinction" receives the most nominations, all seven of them including Worst Picture and Screenplay! But somehow, Mark Wahlberg escaped the wrath of Razzie! And I thought he was horrible in the movie!
But this year, the Razzie introduces a new award. Maybe to show the softer side of Razzie! The new category is called the Redeemer Award which highlights previous Razzie regulars who redeemed themselves. My favorite is Ben Affleck who went from "Gigli" to "Argo" to "Gone Girl."
Winners of the 35th Golden Raspberry Award will be revealed on February 21st, the night before the Oscars!

The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation has announced the nominations for the 35th annual Razzie Awards. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Legend of Hercules, and Transformers 4: Age of Ex-stink-Tion are leading the nominations for worst movies of the year. The only name I don't think belongs on this list of nominations is Mel Gibson for his role in The Expendables 3, because he was freakin' awesome in that!
You can check out the full announcement below, followed by the nominations list. Look it over and let us know if you agree with what they claim is the worst of 2014.
Hollywood was not happy with box office returns for 2014, their lowest-grossing year in recent history. Despite a handful of high-grossing hits, there were way more major misses — movies based on recycled premises and re-worked concepts that were already tired a decade or more ago, the cinematic equivalent of re-treaded tires.

It’s awards season, and though most of the buzz right now is devoted to which titles stand a fighting chance of being included in tomorrow’s Oscar nominations, the 35th annual Golden Raspberry Awards, known as the Razzies, are here with their nominees to remind us that even that the most loathsome crap of the cinematic crop may be handled some trophies of their own next month.
The nominees for this year’s Razzies – the “winners” of which will be announced on February 21st, the night before the Oscars – are hardly surprising. Michael Bay has always been a favorite punching bag for the mock awards, and his Transformers: Age of Extinction is one of the most frequently mentioned nominees this year (the Bay-produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles also made the cut in a number of areas). The barely-remembered The Legend of Hercules shows up an awful lot as well,...

Nominations for the 35th annual Razzie Awards, which satirize “the Worst Achievements in Film for 2014,” are out. Transformers: Age Of Extinction leads the field with seven; while Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas and The Legend Of Hercules are tied at six nods each.
As usual, the Razzie races were unveiled one day before the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announces its picks for the best achievements of the year in film. But are the Razzies softening at 35? A new category has been added this year for the Razzie Redeemer Award, which acknowledges “that past nominees and ‘winners’ can (and often do) go on to far far better things.” The inaugural class includes Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston and Kristen Stewart.

The worst of the worst.
Yes, it's that time of year, where along with the best films of 2014, we honour the worst films of 2014. The Razzie nominations are out -- and they salute the worst movies and performances.
This year, "Transformers: Age of Extinction" is the worst offender with seven nominations, including worst picture and screenplay. "Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas" and "The Legend of Hercules" each earned six nods, and stars like Seth MacFarlane, Cameron Diaz, Nicolas Cage, and Adam Sandler had their performances singled out.
A new category, the Redeemer Award, also honours past Razzie regulars on their recent work -- especially if they crawl out of the gutter into "real" award territory. (We're looking at you, Jennifer Aniston!)

The most important nominations of the awards season have been announced.
Transformers: Age of Extinction, Adam Sandler's Blended, and Kirk Cameron are the front-runners for this year's "prestigious" Golden Raspberry Awards!
News: Kim K. Wins Razzie For Worst Actress
The 35th annual Razzies, which recognize some of Hollywood's "Worst Achievements in Film," are going to be a tight race this year. Transformers: Age of Extinction leads with seven nominations, but the film is going up against some other truly hated entries such as The Legend of Hercules, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas.
Some of the more interesting nominations, however, come in the acting categories, where Blended star Adam Sandler and Tammy star Melissa McCarthy are both nominated for Worst Actor and Worst Actress respectively – despite having just won People's Choice Awards on Jan. 7.
Even more surprising is the Worst Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel nomination for the musical Annie, which was also...

Five days into the new year and the movie awards season is in full swing. A chance to celebrate all of the cinematic gold bestowed upon us by filmmakers over the last 365 days, the majority of awards bodies veer towards the positive. The good, the great and the outstanding movie achievements. Of course, you can’t have yin without yang, and that customary glint of deviousness amidst the showers of compliments will soon be upon us, in the shape of the The Annual Golden Raspberry Awards.
Known informally as The Razzies, the achievements are dished out based on how bad the category nominees performed, and this year’s nominees have now been announced. Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways To Die In The West beat out its closest competitors for the esteemed honour of most nominations with a whopping eight altogether. Recent limelight comedy, The Interview, also snagged four nominations across three categories.

Exclusive: Birdman may be flying high with critics, but Oscar just shot him down permanently. Musically, that is.
Perhaps the most inventive and talked about motion picture music score of the year — a winner already of numerous critics awards as well as nominations from the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Movie Awards — has been deep-sixed by Oscar even before it had a chance to compete. When Antonio Sanchez’s remarkable percussive drum score for Birdman went missing from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ December 12th list of 114 eligible films for Best Original Music Score, eyebrows were raised. After all this was not exactly a list that discriminates, including everything from Atlas Shrugged: Who Is John Galt? to Ouija. A quiet, and meticulously detailed appeal was launched by the composer, director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and distributor Fox Searchlight. After an emergency meeting of the Music Branch Executive Committee...

5th Update, Monday, 3:18 Pm: Screen Gems’ thriller No Good Deed fell right in line with other distribs’ estimates over the weekend to end the three-day at $24.2M, while Warner Bros./Alcon Entertainment’s Dolphin Tale 2 just fell short of $16M to gross a total cume of $15.8M; it was a softer-than-hoped-for opening for the sequel to the 2011 family film, which bowed to $19M on its way for a $95M worldwide haul). Chernin Entertainment’s crime drama The Drop ended the weekend at No. 6 for a $4.1M take or a respectable $5,000+ per screen for Fox Searchlight; it is James Gandolfini’s last film in release. The Identical dropped like a bomb in its second weekend (-75%) falling out of the Top 20 after a dismal opening. In fact, it’s even behind Woody Allen’s Magic In The Moonlight which is its eighth week of release. It was a very soft box office weekend overall,...

Whenever a major tentpole film dominates the box-office for several weeks, it's usually an unexpected and over performing smaller film aiming at a very different market that knocks the weakening giant off its perch.
It happened again this weekend as the Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson-led, black female audience-targeted thriller "No Good Deed" kicked Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" out of the top slot. 'Deed', costing just $13 million to make, nearly doubled its production budget with a $24.5 million haul over three days.
Family film "Dolphin Tale 2" came in second with $16.6 million, behind the $19.2 million opening of the original back in 2011 though that film had a 3D bump. The news wasn't all bad for 'Guardians' either as it became the first film of 2014 to cross the $300 million mark at the domestic box-office. It came in third with $8 million, and worldwide it also passed the $600 million mark this weekend.

No Good Deed easily took first place ahead of Dolphin Tale 2 on another quiet weekend at the domestic box office.Playing at 2,175 locations, the Screen Gems thriller opened to an estimated $24.25 million. That's in the same general range as 2009's Obsessed ($28.6 million), which shared a producer (Will Packer) and star (Idris Elba) with No Good Deed. More impressively, it debuted significantly higher than last year's The Call ($17.1 million), which was also a Sony thriller featuring a female protagonist in a confined location. No Good Deed managed to successfully combine a few key ingredients. First, and most importantly, it was well-positioned within the perennially successful home invasion subgenre. These movies manage to tap in to one of our most common fears (harm to our home/family), while also promising an element of wish fulfillment (taking control and fighting back against these invaders). Another key element to its success was its...

The politically charged Atlas Shrugged Part III: Who Is John Galt? got off to a slow start at the U.S. box office despite cameos by former Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul and a raft of conservative commentators. Opening in 242 theaters in select markets, the movie grossed between $355,000 and $455,000, well behind the $1.7 million debut of Atlas Shrugged: Part I from 299 locations in April 2011. The second film, launching to $1.8 million in October 2012, isn't an apples-to-apples comparison, since it rolled out in more than 1,000 locations. John

To find fault with the “Atlas Shrugged” franchise because of its politics is like complaining about “Birdemic” because it gets the ornithology wrong. Why dwell on the details when there are giant, embarrassing flaws staring you in the face? You'd never know it from the movies, but Ayn Rand's novel tells a page-turning story amidst its political philosophizing. In the trilogy of films made from the book, which now culminates with “Atlas Shrugged III: Who Is John Galt?”, all that's left are the self-declarations, in which characters generally speak at rather than to each other, along with a very clearly.

Dolphin Tale 2 and No Good Deed could be in a tight race for first place over what will probably be another slow weekend at the domestic box office.According to online ticket seller Fandango, these two new releases have sold essentially the same number of tickets headed in to the weekend. An opening in the $15 to $20 million range seems likely for both titles. At 3,656 locations, Dolphin Tale 2 reaches theaters almost exactly three years after the original Dolphin Tale became a minor hit with family audiences. After opening to a solid $19.2 million, the movie held well and ended its run with $72.3 million. It would be surprising if Dolphin Tale 2 replicated the first movie's success. The movie looks mostly redundant: the only noticeable change is that a new dolphin is added to the mix. Also, the "based on a true story" angle, which was a key selling point for the first movie,...

The first trailer for the aptly titled Atlas Shrugged: Who Is John Galt?, directed by James Manera and written by Manera and Harmon Kaslow, promises epic romance, war and all the Ron Paul the silver screen can handle. It’s somewhat of a miracle that the film even exists. After Atlas Shrugged: Part I was a bonafide flop, only managing to bring in lukewarm $4.6 million at the box office, its...

The trilogy no one asked for is coming to an end after no one saw it. Try as they might to tap into the general air of political and economic discontent afoot in the U.S., the producers behind the "Atlas Shrugged" series never roused much interest beyond a niche base. The first installment earned a tepid $4.6 million at the box office, and the second took in $3.3 million. And in a move that Ayn Rand herself would likely have frowned upon, a Kickstarter campaign enabled the finale "Atlas Shrugged: Who Is John Galt?" A trailer is here to show just where all that money went. Empirically speaking, all that money created very little value. Appearing as poorly acted as the first two films, the finale emphasizes a love story and a vague theme of "choice" amidst a crumbling America and Vaseline smudged camera work. And hey, look! There's Ron Paul!

Well, “Atlas Shrugged: Who Is John Galt?” is still an actual thing that is happening and the producers are continuing a trend that they started with the second film: bringing in an entirely new cast. For the final installment of the trilogy, John Galt will be played by Kristoffer Polaha (“Devil’s Knot”), Laura Regan (“Unbreakable,” “Mad Men”) will play Dagny Taggart, and the rest of the main cast includes Rob Morrow, Eric Allan Kramer, and Joaquim de Almeida. Production on the film has just begun and producers are hoping to release the film this upcoming September, right in time for the midterm elections. Based on the popular Ayn Rand novel, in the third movie, the most successful and productive members of America all begin to disappear in the form of a strike that’s been orchestrated by a mysterious figure named John Galt. Laura Regan ("Mad Men," "Unbreakable") and Rob Morrow ("Northern Exposure") take on the roles of Dagny Taggart and Hank Rearden respectively. They take over from Taylor Schilling and Grant Bowler in the first film, and Samantha Mathis and Jason Beghe in the second.
Joaquim de Almeida ("The Mentalist," "Revolution") takes over from Jsu Garcia and Esai Morales as Francisco d’Anconia, while Eric Allan Kramer has been cast as the modern-day maritime pirate Ragnar Danneskjold.
