The Coen brothers regular plays a delusional ex-librarian who goes questing on a motorbike and sidecar in this good-natured retelling of the classic adventure
Set in the present day, in some American backwoods town where the accents have a softly southern cadence, this likable effort reworks Miguel de Cervantes’s immortal much-adapted novel with veteran character actor and Coen brothers regular Tim Blake Nelson in the title role. It is written and directed by Chris Poche, at the helm for the first time after writing duties on an assortment of animated features including Hoodwinked and Over the Hedge. Poche’s iteration of Quixote imagines the hero, Danny Kehoe, as an unemployed ex-librarian living with his niece Janelle (Ann Mahoney). He is delusional and disturbed rather than, as other versions have posited, having dementia.
As Kehoe burrows deeper into his fantasy world, he becomes convinced he is a medieval knight, and,...

A version of this article about Tim Blake Nelson and “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” first appeared in TheWrap’s Actors/Directors/Screenwriters Oscar magazine.
“I have certainly never put so much time into a role, if you think about the effort in terms of the resulting screen time,” said Tim Blake Nelson, who plays the title role in the new Coen brothers movie “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.”
Nelson is on screen in virtually every frame of the movie’s first 20 minutes as a singing cowboy who also happens to be an ace gunslinger — and then, with the end of the first section of the deliciously dark anthology Western, he disappears, never to be seen again.
But Nelson makes those minutes count, crafting a white-suited, fast-talking, quick-drawing cowpoke for the ages.

Jacob Batalon didn’t set out to be an actor, but that’s about to change for him in a very big way. Starring in a big budget Marvel superhero film will do that for anyone, but for a rising newbie like Batalon – who nearly steals the show as Peter Parker’s best friend and charming sidekick Ned Leeds in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” – it’s still a major surprise. Initially interested in studying singing and the ukulele, the Hawaiian native enrolled at Honolulu’s Kapi‘olani Community College after high school to study music theory, but he soon dropped out without finishing his degree.
“I didn’t really enjoy school in general,” Batalon said in a recent interview. “I dropped out of college in Hawaii, just because I thought school was for losers. But school’s really important.”

Tim Blake Nelson will star in The True Don Quixote, a modern day reimagining of Miguel de Cervantes' classic story.
Nelson will star as a man who is inspired by the fictional Quixote, who spent too much time with romance stories and consequently believes he is a knight. Spider-Man: Homecoming newcomer Jacob Batalon is set to play the movie's Quixote sidekick Sancho Panza.
Chris Poche (Over the Hedge) wrote and will helm the project, which has begun principal photography in New Orleans.

For people of a certain age, there can be little argument that the most recent big screen outings for the Smurfs were disappointing, to say the least. Thrusting the beloved little blue characters into an animation/live action hybrid scenario was, quite simply, ill-advised – even if Hank Azaria was obviously born to play the evil wizard, Gargamel. The fact that the 2011 and 2013 movies are the only Smurfish point of reference for a whole new generation of children is tragic – which makes the news of a fully animated re-boot from Sony Pictures Animation – titled Get Smurfy – most welcome indeed.
The Smurfs hail from a bygone era – first appearing in 1958, as the comic strip creation of Belgian artist Peyo. Peyo was the author of Johan And Peewit at the time, which was a story set in the Middle Ages, and featured a King’s Page and his sidekick. Published in an issue...

More often found these days leading the hunt for terrorists on Homeland, Mandy Pantinkin has agreed to spend some time smurfing the smurfs for smurfs in the role of Papa Smurf as Sony prepares to feed its profitable franchise into the reboot machine for an all-animated new film.Patinkin, who has also been known to grace a stage or two in his time, will take over the Papa Smurf role voiced in the first two live-action/CG blend films by Jonathan Winters, who died in 2013.Shrek 2’s Kelly Asbury is directing the new film, which resets the clock back for a Smurfs origin story and intends to return the small blue characters to their traditional, Peyo-derived look as opposed to the more solid CG versions seen in the 2011 and 2013 films. Not much else is known about the new film other than that Asbury’s fellow DreamWorks veteran (and...

"Homeland" star Mandy Patinkin is set to voice Papa Smurf in Sony Pictures Animation's upcoming reboot of its "The Smurfs" franchise.
The new film will ditch the CG 'Smurfs in our contemporary world' setting in favor of a fully animated project that sticks closer to the original cartoon and designs by creator Peyo.
The project will also give a new origin story to the Smurfs. Though the wise paternal leader of the creatures, that will not always be the case with this Papa Smurf.
Kelly Asbury ("Gnomeo and Juliet," "Shrek the Third") is directing from a script by "Over The Hedge" scribes Karey Kirkpatrick and Chris Poche. An August 5th 2016 release date is being targeted.

Talk about getting ahead of yourselves. While the notion of scripting multiple sequels isn't that novel, Sony is banking on the overwhelming success of the first Smurfs movie to jump ahead of next summer's sequel and pen a third film. The Smurfs sequel recently made news when Christina Ricci, Brendan Gleeson and J.B. Smoove agreed to cash a lucrative paycheck. The Smurfs 2 arrives in theaters July 31, 2103. Variety reports that Karey Kirkpatrick and Chris Poche (they penned and directed the animated comedy Over the Hedge) are on board to write and direct The Smurfs 3. The first Smurfs movie grossed a surprising $563 million worldwide. It's clear that Sony isn't ready to put that cash cow out to pasture just yet. The third Smurfs film should arrive in theaters...

Talk about planning ahead. Before our megaplexes can even be graced by the currently in-production sequel to 2011 children’s flick “The Smurfs,” the film’s studio Sony is really eager to turn the epic saga of these little blue individuals into a trilogy.
We heard about “The Smurfs” sequel awhile back as it added talent like Christina Ricci, Brendan Gleeson and J.B. Smoove to the mix, but Variety is reporting that Sony is getting a little ahead of themselves as the studio is already developing a script for "The Smurfs 3" with scribes Karey Kirkpatrick and Chris Poche onboard. Both were responsible for DreamWorks Animation’s “Over the Hedge,” and we’d guess they will probably be joined by many of the principal cast and creatives because this is the sort of films just screams “Payday!” for all involved. We’re sure “The Smurfs” creator Peyo would never have believed that...

When The Smurfs made more than half a billion dollars worldwide last summer, you had to know there was a sequel coming whether you wanted it or not. And though Smurfs 2 is shooting now and is scheduled for a July 31, 2013 release date, Sony isn't even going to wait that long to get moving on the third one. Variety reports that Sony Pictures Animation and Columbia Pictures have set Karey Kirkpatrick and Chris Poche to develop a script for Smurfs 3, with producer Jordan Kerner also on board after producing the first two Smurfs films. Kirkpatrick and Poche wrote Over the Hedge for DreamWorks Animation, and Kirkpatrick also directed that film, along with 2009's live-action Imagine That. Raja Gosnell is set to return as director on Smurfs 2, but who knows if he might be angling to depart before the third one and have Kirkpatrick step in. There's also no word on which...

"The Smurfs" hit theaters less than a year ago and grossed $564 million globally on a $110 million budget. A few days after the release, Sony Pictures Animation announced plans for a sequel, scheduling it for August 2nd, 2013. But now comes word that the studio is so confident in "The Smurfs 2," that it's already developing the third installment. Karey Kirkpatrick and Chris Poche (Over the Hedge) are on board to write the script. At this point, we know very little about "The Smurfs 3," but the second film will bring back the original cast and director Raja Gosnell. New cast-members include Jb Smoove and Christina Ricci, who will play Vexy, an evil version of Smurfette (Katy Perry).

Sony Pictures Animation isn't holding back on its plans to turn "The Smurfs" into a major franchise reports Variety.

Producer Jordan Kerner remains onboard, though it's unknown if director Raja Gosnell or any of the other cast members will be back for a third go-around.

Writer-director Karey Kirkpatrick has inked a two-year, first-look production deal with Nickelodeon Movies and MTV Films under his newly formed Blue Shirt Prods. label.
Kirkpatrick, whose helming credits include DreamWorks Animation's Over the Hedge and Paramount Pictures' upcoming The Spiderwick Chronicles, will focus on providing live-action family fare for Paramount Pictures labels Nickelodeon and MTV. The pact does not cover animation as Kirkpatrick remains exclusive to DWA in that genre.
First up for the Blue Shirt/Nickelodeon partnership is Captain Abdul's Pirate School, based on a book by Colin McNaughton. The family action-comedy is being penned by Kirkpatrick along with writing partners Chris Poche and Clare Sera, with Kirkpatrick attached to direct.
"My last two films have been with Paramount/Nickelodeon, and I have a long history with DreamWorks, so this is really a perfect place for me to start this new chapter in my career," Kirkpatrick said. "I'm excited about branching out and continuing my slow but steady quest for total world domination."
Blue Shirt will concentrate on family and romantic comedies.
