Adam Deacon’s star-stuffed parody arrives on digital platforms next week ahead of a boxing day rental release.
The latest film from BAFTA-winner Adam Deacon will be available to download and keep on digital platforms from the 12th December, before becoming rent-able (presumably from those same ‘digital platforms’) from the 26th December.
We’ve not managed to catch this one yet, but the synopsis (and a stacked cast list) have our curiosity piqued. Here is that very same synopsis:
In this parody of the UK urban genre Riko and Kane have got it all … big dreams, no respect and a fifteen grand debt. Could things get any worse?
Yes! So, it’s time to man up and finally be taken seriously as “Roadmen”. Once putting their heads together on various ways to make some money, they decide to rob a megastar in a nightclub toilet and hold up the local bank,...

Semi-sequel to the spoof gangland tale muddles comic capers with extreme violence and it’s not helped by a cameo from ‘Crack Ed’ Sheeran
When Adam Deacon sent up the turgid inner-city dramas Kidulthood and Adulthood with his 2011 comedy Anuvahood, he was dissing the hand that fed him: Deacon was one of the stars of the earlier Noel Clarke-penned films, which made it all the more frustrating that none of his barbs hit their target. His aim in the intervening 12 years hasn’t noticeably improved. This new semi-sequel, set in a modern-day London awash with guns and gangs, reunites the earlier picture’s writing duo Deacon and Michael Vu, who are joined by Jazzie Zonzolo, and brings back several cast members. Among them is Richie Campbell, reprising his performance as a lisping thug and still shouting his lines in a bid to make them funny. It’s a tactic...

"It's a lifestyle, Garage." Platinum Pictures has revealed an official trailer for a music documentary called, very simply: 25 Years of UK Garage. One of the most descriptive titles of the year, as the film is literally about 25 years of UK garage music and the dance music scene in Britain. Made by the same filmmakers behind United Nation Three Decades of Drum & Bass. 25 Years of UK Garage provides insight into the stories of the DJ's and Mc's from the UK Garage dance music scene over the past two and a half decades. The "Garage Nation" scene is very specific to the UK, though it has spread worldwide thanks to the internet. The doc film features appearances from Richie Campbell, Anthony Joshua, Mc Harvey, Leo Ihenacho, Ms. Dynamite, Lisa Maffia, Megaman, So Solid Crew, Dane Bowers, M.C. Creed, DJ Majestic, Mc Bushkin, Heartless Crew, DJ Swiss, DJ Pds, Oxide & Neutrino, Scott Garcia.

Adam Deacon, the BAFTA-winning star of British indie dramas “Kidulthood” and “Adulthood,” will take on his next directorial project with “Sumotherhood.”
Billed as an urban action comedy, the film sees Deacon reteaming with Michael Vu, with whom he collaborated on the 2011 film “Anuvahood” — his first turn in the director’s seat. Joining them for the new project is writing partner and comedy performer Jazzie Zonzolo.
“Sumotherhood” marks Deacon’s return to the industry after a number of years away. The British actor-rapper broke through in the 2006 drama “Kidulthood,” and went on to win BAFTA’s highly coveted Rising Star award in 2012, beating the likes of Eddie Redmayne and Tom Hiddleston. Early in his career, Deacon collaborated on several projects with actor-director Noel Clarke — who was recently subject to multiple sexual misconduct and bullying claims, all of which he denies — but went on to accuse Clarke of bullying and sabotaging his...

[Editor’s note: The following review contains spoilers for “Dead Simple,” the first installment of BritBox’s “Grace.”]
British crime author Peter James is an unqualified success: He’s written 36 novels and sold more than 20 million copies of those books, which have been translated into 37 languages. For the unfamiliar, let me share a sampling of the Amazon reviews for 2005’s “Dead Simple,” the first novel in his 16-book series starring Detective Superintendent Roy Grace:
-“The book has made me angry!”
-“A rather silly plot”
-“Phobia Alert!!!”
-“No one acts the way they should.”
Judging by these reviews, “Dead Simple,” as it turns out, has been very faithfully adapted by BritBox — the online streaming service co-owned by the BBC and ITV — for its first dip into original programming. The plot of the BritBox version is truly insane, apparently much like the book, and it’s only thanks to the solid, empathetic performance of John Simm as...

BritBox, the BBC and ITV’s joint-venture streamer, has acquired ITV’s John Simm drama Grace for the U.S. and Canada. The service will premiere the drama on April 27.
Told as two feature-length episodes, Grace is an adaptation of Peter James’ Roy Grace crime novels from Endeavour creator Russell Lewis. It is a co-production between Jekyll & Hyde producer Tall Story Pictures, Second Act Productions, and Derren Brown’s Vaudeville Productions.
It is based on James’ first two Roy Grace books Dead Simple and Looking Good Dead, which introduce Brighton-based Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, a hard-working police officer who has given his life to the job.
The drama opens with Grace’s career at rock bottom. He’s fixated by the disappearance of his wife, Sandy, which haunts his thoughts. He’s in the last chance saloon running inquiries into long-forgotten cold cases with little prospect of success. Following another...

‘If you are the big tree, we are the small axe’
Made famous by Bob Marley and the Wailers’ 1973 song ‘Small Axe’, that’s the traditional proverb behind the title for a five-film series by Oscar-winning British director Steve McQueen.
Two of McQueen’s Small Axe films were selected for this year’s Cannes Film Festival and in October, one opened the 64th London Film Festival. Now, all five are coming straight to BBC One and iPlayer in the UK, and Amazon Prime Video around the world. The home release has nothing to do with the pandemic; it was always the plan for these feature-length films with a cast including Star Wars’ John Boyega and Black Panther’s Letitia Wright, to air for a mainstream audience on prime time UK television.

With Lovers Rock, the first part of Steve McQueen’s forthcoming anthology Small Axe, having premiered at the 58th New York Film Festival, many have wondered how to classify this project. Well, the director gave a definitive answer. “These are five features,” McQueen said in his recent NYFF press conference.”In a perfect world, I would love people to see these films in the cinema, absolutely, but we are living in these times [with] TVs and how people can use this equipment in high quality ways. But there is nothing for me that can beat going to the cinema and viewing with a community of people.”
Now, Amazon Studios has solidified his intention by announcing the release plans for the Small Axe features, and rather than all arriving at once as has become the norm in this new age of streaming, they will rollout weekly beginning this November.

U.K. broadcaster BBC One has released a punchy trailer for “Mangrove,” one of five films from the “Small Axe” anthology by Oscar and BAFTA winner Steve McQueen (“12 Years a Slave”).
Aug. 9 marks the 50th anniversary of the day in 1970 when 150 protesters of West Indian, African and South Asian heritage in Notting Hill, West London, marched to local police stations in protest of police harassment in their communities, including the Mangrove restaurant. Nine protest leaders were arrested and charged with incitement to riot: Frank Crichlow, Darcus Howe, Altheia Jones-LeCointe, Barbara Beese, Rupert Boyce, Rhodan Gordon, Anthony Innis, Rothwell Kentish and Godfrey Millett. The group later became known as the ‘Mangrove 9.’
“It was a march necessitated by relentless police brutality in Notting Hill,” said McQueen. “To commemorate the bravery of these community activists and the nine who went on to be acquitted of incitement to riot with the judge citing ‘evidence of racial hatred,...

The New York Film Festival has announced its opening night film as well as plans for its physical events. The 58th edition of the festival will open with Steve McQueen’s “Lovers Rock,” with the festival also playing home to two other features that comprise McQueen’s ambitious new “Small Axe” series in its main slate. As indicated by festival brass earlier this summer, this year’s NYFF is going to operate differently than it has in previous incarnations. The event will combine a brand-new virtual presence with carefully designed outdoor screenings, including two drive-ins.
McQueen’s “Small Axe” anthology is set to premiere on BBC One later this year and air on Amazon Prime Video in the U.S. Per the series’ official synopsis, it is “set from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s, the films each tell a different story involving London’s West Indian community, whose...

Beloved British author Zadie Smith has already seen one of her novels — the lauded 2000 offering “White Teeth” — turned into a television version, and now her “Nw” is getting similar treatment. The 2012 Women’s Prize for Fiction nominee will soon hit BBC Two as a 90-minute telepic that weaves together the stories of four childhood friends who are all struggling to overcome their past as they make their way through adulthood.
The story’s four protagonists — Leah Hanwell, Natalie (née Keisha) Blake, Felix Cooper and Nathan Bogle — all grew up together in North-West London (the “Nw” of the title) on the fictional Caldwell council estate, and have endeavored (in some very different ways) to break free of the world they first knew. While Natalie (Nikki Amuka-Bird) has managed to turn herself into a wealthy, successful barrister, her childhood pal Leah (Phoebe Fox) still struggles with both money and ambition. Episode four of The Frankenstein Chronicles, feat. Sean Bean, threw yet more potential killers into the suspect pool...
This review contains spoilers.
1.4 The Fortune Of War
Taking its title from where the series left us and Inspector John Marlott last week, episode four of The Frankenstein Chronicles took us right back to the grubby Fortune of War pub. The 19th century’s answer to Harvester isn't somewhere many people would voluntarily return to, but Marlott had work to do, hoping to bump into snatcher, killer, stitcher n’ seller suspect number one “Billy the Child Catcher”. The leads that led Marlott here: deputy Joseph Nightingale knows that dead bodies are transported through the tunnels snaking underneath the Fortune of War; grave robber Pritty knows which locals are dealing in death to pay the rent; and witness Flora knows Billy was the one who snatched missing child, Alice. Unfortunately,...

The Frankenstein Chronicles feat. Sean Bean sets up some juicy complications in this week's murky William Blake-themed episode...
London, 1827 – Day
Officer John Marlott and his boss Sir Robert Peel are standing by the capital’s latest crime scene: another mutilated and stitched body has washed up on the bank of the Thames.
Sir Robert Peel
I don’t want any mistakes on this case, Marlott. I’m gonna be watching you so close you’ll think we’ve been stitched together.
Peel stalks away, leaving Marlott gazing into the grey city gloom.
John Marlott
Okay, Sir Robert…
Marlott turns and puts on an era-appropriate hat.
John Marlott
…suture self.
The Who
*Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh*
The 19th century London locale still doesn’t look like CSI: Miami’s beaches, and John Marlott – seeking the one “out there doin’ murders” – sure ain’t Horatio Caine. It’s all grit in this cop show/Frankenstein riff,...

Now alone, and not knowing where to turn, she finds refuge and acceptance in a girl gang led by the damaged, man-hating Danielle. Look out for newcomer Aimee Kelly (represented by United Agents) who makes her film debut in Sket, and has also been nominated for Best British Newcomer in the 55th BFI London Film Festival awards, alongside Sket's writer and director Nirpal Bhogal.
17 year old Aimee was so admired by casting director Jane Ripley and the producers that her script was re-written for her native Newcastle accent.
Sket is a hard hitting look at the world of girl gang culture. Aimee plays Kayla, a young, sixteen year old, facing the harsh London streets of gangland culture alone. Her mother already dead and her only protector and loving sister, Tanya, is brutally murdered by violent, misogynist gang leader Trey. Swearing vengeance, Kayla joins a girl gang led by the violent, damaged Danielle (Emma Hartley-Miller) who has her own reasons for helping Kayla seek retribution.
Sket also stars Ashley Walters, Lily Loveless, Emma Hartley-Miller,...

Blood feuds are as ancient as primordial human history. The Celts (Irish) have killed thousands throughout history. In Albania, 10,000 people have been killed in the last twenty years because of family or blood feuds. Now, Gunslinger, the production arm of Revolver Entertainment, will bring a family feud to East London. When Tanya (Kate Foster-Burns) is killed, Kayla must retaliate for her sister's murder the only way she knows how, by joining an all girl gang. The gang leader Danielle (Emma Hartley-Miller) vows to get vengeance on an opposing gang: "we'll be like them," which leads to even more violence.
The first trailer for Sket is here and the clip is mature rated because of violence and other adult material. As well, Gunslinger continues to create these gang styled thrillers often set in East London e.g. Shank, which just seem to highlight gang violence. Also, the material here seems to...

Written, directed by and starring Adam Deacon, Anuvahood is the antithesis of grimy thrillers set on run-down London housing estates. This is a bright, vibrant film, its knowing costume design differentiating sharply between individuals and sects within the community.
Anuvahood’s protagonist, Kenneth (Deacon), or ‘K’ as he longs to be known, is typical of his ilk. Someone who has watched one episode of The Wire and somehow thinks he is living the life, Kenneth aspires to be a gangster, or at least a gangster rapper. Dressed in cotton jersey tracksuits, wraparound sunglasses, even an ironic ‘Timmy Mallet’ (and Mallet’s Mallet) vest, Kenneth selects random style notes with no real clue as to the statement he is making.
Kenneth (Adam Deacon) in his signature cotton jersey tracksuit.
Each central character in the story is given a costume identity. T.J. (Jazzie Zonzolo), probably Kenneth’s closest, in fact only real friend at this point,...
