“Maestro” did well at the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 18 winning two of its three bids. It claimed the prizes for both period/character makeup and special effects races but lost period/character hairstyling to “Barbie,” which was snubbed by the Oscars. Likewise for “Saltburn,” which won both contemporary makeup and hairstyling.
Of this year’s other Oscar nominees, “Poor Things” lost all three of its bids just hours after pulling off an upset at the BAFTAs, “Golda” and “Oppenheimer” were each defeated in a single race while “Society of the Snow” was snubbed by the guild.
These wins boost the odds for “Maestro” to prevail at the Academy Awards. In the decade-long history of these guild honors, there has been just one year when an Muahs winner did not go on to claim the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

The Oscar-frontrunning “Maestro” was the big winner at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards (held February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein opus took period/character makeup and special makeup effects. This puts “Maestro” in the Oscar driver’s seat (led by two-time winner Kazu Hiro) against “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Golda,” and “Society of the Snow.”
Two non-Oscar competitors, “Saltburn”and “Barbie,” split the other wins: Emerald Fennell’s psychological thriller grabbed both contemporary makeup and hairstyling, while Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster snagged period/character hairstyling.
TV winners, meanwhile, were divided among “The Idol” (contemporary makeup), “The Crown” (period/character makeup), “The Last of Us” (special makeup effects), “The Morning Show” (contemporary hairstyling), and “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” (period/character hairstyling).

“The Color Purple” director Blitz Bazawule hesitated to take on the latest incarnation of Alice Walker’s sacred text. However, when he revisited the book, the first line struck him as a way to navigate a familiar story and “keep expanding Celie’s imagination.”
In the new musical movie adaptation, as Celie (Fantasia Barrino) is bathing Shug (Taraji P. Henson), an old record plays on a gramophone in the background. But as the camera zooms in, the record player becomes a stage for Celie to express herself and her emotions. In a two-hour storyboard video film, the director had pre-visualized how Celie’s imagination would be integral to every aspect of bringing “The Color Purple” back to life.
Bazawule was speaking at Variety‘s Artisans Screening Series, where he was joined by editor Jon Poll, costume designer Francine Jamison-Tanchuck, production designer Paul D. Austerberry, cinematographer Dan Laustsen, makeup department head Carol Rasheed,...

Makeup artist Arjen Tuiten’s transformation of Renée Zellweger for NBC’s “The Thing About Pam,” premiering March 8, has been the talk of the internet. Zellweger plays Pam Hupp in the new crime drama, based on the true story of a Missouri woman who is eventually jailed for the murder of her friend. Zellweger donned a padded suit for the role. At TCA last month, the actor mentioned she had opted not to gain weight for the part — as she had for “Bridget Jones’s Diary” — since it had negatively impacted her health. While she had used prosthetics in films before, this was the first time she wore a full suit.
The show raised an outcry for not casting an actor with the same body type as Pam, but Blumhouse Television’s Chris McCumber explained the producers’ reasoning: “In this era of peak TV, having an artist of Renée’s caliber is an incredible advantage.

This year is all about transformations.
Stellan Skarsgard in “Dune,” Jared Leto in “House of Gucci” and Jessica Chastain in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” all required hours in the makeup chair and daily application of prosthetics for their roles.
At the other end of the scale, Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in “Spencer,” Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin in “Respect,” Lady
Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani in “House of Gucci,” Nicole Kidman in “Being the Ricardos” and Emma Stone in “Cruella” just needed little accents from a winged liner to a straight line or the perfect bold red lip, and even gold lipstick to make subtle statements about their characters.
Here’s an insight into the transformation process.

“The first thing that went through my mind was, ‘I have got to get this right,'” admits Lawrence Davis, the hair department head for the Aretha Franklin biopic “Respect” starring Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson. “Everyone knows who Aretha Franklin is. Just being true to the story and doing her legacy justice [put] pressure on my shoulders. I knew I had to do everything in my power to get this right.” Watch the exclusive video interview with Davis and makeup department head Stevie Martin above.
“Respect” is directed by Liesl Tommy and premiered in Los Angeles on August 8. Along with Hudson, the film also stars Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald, Marc Marron, Tituss Burgess and Mary J. Blige. Jennifer Hudson felt that the best way to honor the late soul singing legend Aretha Franklin in the biopic Respect was to deliver as much authenticity in her performance as the Queen of Soul invested in her music.
“How do you even begin to capture or approach someone so massive as Aretha Franklin, that’s so dear to all of us in some way?” a still-marveling Hudson, who was Franklin’s personal choice to portray her in her life story, told Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles, where she shared a panel with the film’s director Liesl Tommy, costume designer Clint Ramos, hair department head Lawrence Davis and makeup department head Stevie Martin.

It has not been an easy year for theater lovers, who have mostly made do with well-filmed performances of shows like “Hamilton” and “David Byrne’s American Utopia.”
In contrast to those projects, Liesl Tommy’s Aretha Franklin biopic “Respect” was created as an original film, but it works best when envisioned as a Broadway-style jukebox musical.
Tommy and writer Tracey Scott Wilson are making their cinematic debuts with this sturdy retelling of Franklin’s early life and career. However, they come to the project with impressive stage backgrounds, which inform every aspect of their approach. Any stage, of course, needs a star who can command the space. That the story intermittently recedes into the background might be problematic, were it not for the fact that the spotlight remains resolutely focused on a captivating Jennifer Hudson, who was chosen for the role by Franklin herself, before she passed away in...

“Mare of Easttown” hit the zeitgeist during its seven-episode run on HBO earlier this year, on its way to 16 nominations at the 2021 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited Series and four acting nominations. HBO programming chief Casey Bloys said in June there were “no conversations” taking place for a second season at the moment, but Winslet recently told Entertainment Weekly that series creator Brad Ingelsby already has “some very cool ideas” about where Mare could go next.
“At the end of shooting we were like, ‘Holy hell we can never do that again. If HBO brings up the idea of a Season 2, we all just have to say absolutely not. There’s just no way we could possibly do it,'” Winslet said. “And then there was talk, like, could there be? Especially when the show was getting such good responses… Creatively, Brad has shared some very cool ideas. We will see what happens.

Based on Colson Whitehead‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name and directed by Academy Award winner Barry Jenkins, “The Underground Railroad” is a 10-episode limited series that was released in its entirety on Amazon Prime Video on May 14. Although set in the 1850s, the story, which features everything from skyscrapers to elevators to underground railroads, is not, in terms of its themes, exclusive to that specific period in U.S. American history. It is both a story about Black endurance, resistance and resilience and one that serves as a reminder that racism is not only encrusted into the inception of the U.S. but still very much alive and kicking today. Scroll down to watch our 14 video interviews with top Emmy contenders from the show.

“In my hairstylist world, I want to beautify everybody,” admits Emmy Award winner Lawrence Davis, the hair department head on Amazon‘s 10-episode limited series “The Underground Railroad.” In our exclusive video interview (watch above), he expands on why he had to take a step back from this aforementioned approach, what went into his research process for this show and which other projects he’s recently worked on.
Based on Colson Whitehead‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, “The Underground Railroad” follows Cora (Thuso Mbedu), an enslaved girl who makes a bid for freedom from slaveholding Georgia in the 19th century. “I thought it had already been done,” Davis jokingly reveals, explaining that he was convinced the show had already started production before he signed on to it. In addition to being able to work with writer-creator-director Barry Jenkins, a main draw for Davis was the fact that...

Kate Winslet revealed in a recent interview with The New York Times (via Insider) that she pushed back against several attempts to make her character on HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” look more attractive. The Oscar winner stars in the limited series as Marianne “Mare” Sheehan, a Pennsylvania detective investigating the murder of a young girl. It was Winslet’s top priority to have Mare look like a real-world middle-aged woman, so when director Craig Zobel told her that her “bulgy bit of belly” could be removed from her sex scene with co-star Guy Peace, Winslet told him, “Don’t you dare!”
The New York Times adds: “[Winslet] also sent the show’s promo poster back twice because it was too retouched. ‘They were like ‘Kate, really, you can’t,’ and I’m like ‘Guys, I know how many lines I have by the side of my eye, please put them all back…...

“Mare of Easttown” has stirred up so much buzz because of its Philadelphia accents and dour atmosphere that even “Saturday Night Live” delivered a parody of the Kate Winslet-starring detective drama over the weekend. Now comes word from the HBO series’ lead hairstylist Lawrence Davis that his one marching order when starting work on the series was to give everyone bed hair, no exceptions. Davis spoke about his work on “Mare of Easttown” during an interview with Insider.
“When I came on board, I was told bed hair for everyone,” Lawrence said. “I was basically told that everybody has bed hair…Everybody was basically, you know, get up and go, and that was the whole feel of it. But I was basically told from day one: ‘Bed hair,’ and I had to ride with that.”
The “bed hair” rule fit into Winslet’s new career mantra of refusing roles...

No hairstylist has been more instrumental in shaping the looks of African American actors and actresses for television and film of the last 10 years than Lawrence Davis, one of the most sought-after talents in his field. His skill alone doesn’t account for why Davis has worked on more than 80 movies and TV series — in addition to winning two Emmys — his real talent lies in how he uses his craft in a critical, and often underestimated role in the visual storytelling of a film or TV series. “It’s a key element of defining a character for an actor because hair is a language too, especially for Black people,” said Mahershala Ali, who brought Davis onto “Green Book” and “True Detective” to collaborate with to establish his characters. “It’s hard to overstate the value of — or at least how — African Americans express something about themselves through how they chose to wear their hair.

It’s about time that two-time supporting actor Oscar winner Mahershala Ali (“Green Book” and “Moonlight”) got a lead role, and his troubled Arkansas cop, Wayne Hays, was a game-changer for Season 3’s “True Detective” on HBO.
The fact that Ali got to play Hays at three different stages of his life: his thirties, forties, and seventies, made it a more remarkable achievement as we got to witness the personal impact of the macabre murder mystery. The three faces of Hays became a study in hope, futility, and dementia as he is consumed by the case. And the masterful makeup and hair work aided in Ali’s powerful performance.
Beginning with his grandfather as a point of reference, Ali collaborated with makeup artists Debi Young and Mike Marino and hairstylist Lawrence Davis to create a unified look that suited him best. “He asked me to come do this project with...

When it comes to hair, backstage pro Lawrence Davis does it all. His list of credits includes TV shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Being Mary Jane, Claws and Shark Tank, as well as movies Bessie, The Immortal Life of Heniretta Lacks, Hairspray Live! (for which he won an Emmy) and Mudbound, just to name a few. There's a lot of productions on his resume and even more people. For the hairstylist, product knowledge is everything, because there's no telling who he will be working with next. This means that he knows what works beyond what the label of the bottle says and keeps products that work on a range of hair textures. Case in point: his drugstore must-have from Garnier...
