The invitation stated the event was going to be standing room only. “Think dance party while watching the film.”
And that’s exactly what it was. On Thursday night, Lady Gaga brought a dance party to Nya studios in Hollywood to mark the world premiere of her film “Gaga Chromatica Ball.”
The evening kicked off with a Q&a moderated by Access Hollywood’s Scott Evans. “This was such a special time. This tour went on during a time that people didn’t think that you could. The stadiums were packed all, they were sold out and [people were] all dressed up, dancing and singing,” said Gaga in front of an audience of about 400 guests that included “RuPaul’s Drag Race” stars Gottmik, Sasha Velour and Violet Chachki.

Lady Gaga’s Las Vegas residency promises only two things: Jazz & Piano. But judging from the photos she posted of Thursday’s opening night performance and video that’s surfaced online, it contains so much more.
On Instagram, she posted a photo of herself holding a Broadway-style Playbill with anticipation in her eyes and a photo of Miles Davis (who plays jazz but not piano) blowing his trumpet over her shoulder. When the show was done, she shared another in which she was wearing a shiny tux (bowtie included) and her hairstylist,...

Lady Gaga has released the video to “Hold My Hand,” her song from the upcoming “Top Gun: Maverick.”
The video, shot in both black-and-white and color, is helmed by the film’s director Joseph Kosinski. It features Gaga, footage from the new film, as well as clips from 1986’s “Top Gun,” hitting all the right nostalgic notes.
In the video, Gaga sings at a military base as Kosinski intercuts Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is reminiscing. At one point, the video hits emotional notes as Maverick is shown with Anthony Edwards’ Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, holding him as the character dies.
For a portion of the video, Gaga wears a simple white tank, aviator sunglasses and a bomber jacket. Her team including makeup artist Sarah Tanno, hairstylist Frederic Aspiras and creative director Nicola Formichetti are responsible for her look. Formichetti confirmed the jacket belongs to Cruise and worn by the actor in the 1986 original.

“Coming 2 America” dominated the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 19 winning all three of its bids. The sequel to the comedy classic won both contemporary awards plus the special make-up prize. The period/character awards went to the makeup of “Cruella” and the hairstyling of “Being the Ricardos.”
This haul positions “Coming 2 America” well for the Academy Awards. In the first eight years of these guild awards, the eventual Oscar winner claimed at least one prize here first. Of its four rivals for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars, only “Cruella” came away from here a winner. Both “House of Gucci” and “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” were bested in all three of their races while “Dune” was a two-time also-ran.

Frederic Aspiras, hairstylist to Lady Gaga in “House of Gucci” has become the second Asian American to be nominated for a Hair and Makeup Oscar.
Japanese-born American special make-up effects artist and visual artist Kazuhiro Tsuji is the only other Asian American to be nominated and win for “The Darkest Hour” and “Bombshell.”
The award was created by the Academy in 1981 after complaints that there was no way to recognize the makeup artists for the 1980 film “The Elephant Man.”
Aspiras, who is of Vietnamese-Filipino descent, also earned a BAFTA nomination last week and is nominated for a Makeup and Hairstylist Guild nomination. He has worked with Gaga for over 13 years, including creating the look sported by Gaga for Variety’s Actors on Actors cover. This year is all about transformations.
Stellan Skarsgard in “Dune,” Jared Leto in “House of Gucci” and Jessica Chastain in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” all required hours in the makeup chair and daily application of prosthetics for their roles.
At the other end of the scale, Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana in “Spencer,” Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin in “Respect,” Lady
Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani in “House of Gucci,” Nicole Kidman in “Being the Ricardos” and Emma Stone in “Cruella” just needed little accents from a winged liner to a straight line or the perfect bold red lip, and even gold lipstick to make subtle statements about their characters.
Here’s an insight into the transformation process.

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations on January 11. Of the 10 films that remain in the running for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars, eight are vying for these precursor prizes. “House of Gucci,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “Coming 2 America” and “The Suicide Squad” reaped three bids apiece with the guild; “Cruella,” “Dune” and “No Time to Die” earned two each; and “West Side Story” has one.
Two films still in contention at the Academy Awards — “Cyrano” and “Nightmare Alley” — were snubbed by the guild. Conversely, five of the Muahs favorites — “Being the Ricardos,” “Black Widow,” “Don’t Look Up,” “In the Heights” and “The Matrix Resurrections” — didn’t make the cut with the academy in phase 1 of voting.

“The Suicide Squad,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “Coming 2 America” and “House of Gucci” lead the ninth annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild nominations (IATSE Local 706).
“The Suicide Squad,” released last August, was nominated in special makeup effects, contemporary makeup and contemporary hairstyling.
“The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “Coming 2 America” and “House of Gucci” also landed three nominations, while “Dune” scored two nods. This bodes well for all the films which made the Oscar shortlist.
As previously announced, makeup artist Michèle Burke, known for her work on the Mission Impossible and Austin Powers franchises, and hairstylist Joy Zapata, who worked on “A Star is Born” and “Wonder Woman 1984,” will receive the 2022 Muahs Lifetime Achievement awards. The Distinguished Artisan award will be announced shortly.
The winners will be announced on Feb. 19 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Makeup artist Sarah Tanno has done almost every look imaginable on Lady Gaga, but her biggest challenge came when Gaga signed on to play Patrizia Reggiani in Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci.”
The actor told her friend and collaborator that she didn’t want to see herself on screen, she wanted to disappear into the role. Tanno created a makeup arc for the character, whose story spans three decades.
What was the starting point for transforming Lady Gaga into Patrizia Reggiani?
It was about dissecting the script in a way — not only did I read it and try to understand her as a person, I went through any kind of documentation looking at photos, videos and interviews.
But there wasn’t a lot of photo evidence of her from earlier years and before her wedding. Freddy [Frederic Aspiras, Gaga’s hairstylist] and I did so much research about her...

Even for a performer known for his physical transformations, Jared Leto reached another level with “House of Gucci.” To play the foolish and ultimately tragic Paolo Gucci in Ridley Scott’s epic drama, Leto underwent hours of makeup and prosthetic work – and the result rendered him so unrecognizable that even costars like Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons weren’t aware they were initially sharing a set with the Oscar-winning actor.
“You have no idea how mind-blowing it is when this guy came in, dressed as Paolo, stood next to me — I was new in Italy — and I thought, ‘Who is this?,’ because he kept calling me ‘Papa!’” Pacino said last year. “Somebody, a sensitive person in the area, said, ‘Al, it’s Jared.’ I swear to you, I bowed to the floor. I remember, I said, ‘You are an inspiration. I can go on now.’”

In the ever-growing list of awards shows, American Cinematheque is throwing its clout behind a new one they call Tribute to the Crafts, an in-person celebration of the artisans behind the scenes who don’t get nearly the attention during the season that their above-the-line colleagues seem to. The ceremony, which will try to rectify this oversight, is set for Wednesday January 26, at the Cinematheque’s Aero Theatre in Santa Monica.
The new show will “honor those who are at the very heart of filmmaking, and have exhibited extraordinary work behind the camera, over the past year.” The evening will celebrate individuals in fourteen categories covering all aspects of filmmaking and will showcase clips from each of their respective films. The audience for this invitation-only event will be composed of members from AMPAS, PGA, WGA, DGA, SAG-AFTRA, BAFTA and Critics Choice.

The American Cinematheque announced today the honorees for the inaugural Tribute to the Crafts, which will take place in-person on Jan. 26, at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, Calif.

Among the artisans being honored are “The Power of the Dog” cinematographer Ari Wegner, “Cruella” costume designer Jenny Beavan, “Dune” editor Joe Walker, composer Nicholas Britell for “Don’t Look Up” and the hair and makeup team behind “House of Gucci” — Jana Carboni, Giuliano Mariano, Göran Lundström, Sarah Tanno and Frederic Aspiras.

Makeup artist Sarah Tanno and hair stylist Frederic Aspiras are the masterminds behind some of Lady Gaga’s most iconic looks.
From the bubblegum pink “Rain on Me” wig and alienesque design to the “The Color of the Pomegranates”-inspired creations for Gaga’s “911” music video, Tanno and Aspiras have been working in tandem at the Haus of Gaga (the name Gaga uses to describe her creative team) for years. But “House of Gucci,” in theaters now, provided them their biggest challenge yet — they needed to strip away the public persona of Gaga and have audiences only see Patrizia Reggiani.
Director Ridley Scott initially wanted just two wigs and one makeup look to carry the story of Reggiani and the Gucci family from the ‘70s to the ‘90s, but Aspiras fought for a range of wigs, including a tight ’80s perm to help age Gaga. Aspiras says, “Ridley said,...

The “House of Gucci” has taken over the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (Fidm) Museum in downtown Los Angeles. Costumes worn by the film’s cast, including Lady Gaga, Adam Driver and Jared Leto were on display, including Lady Gaga’s wedding dress.
On hand opening night were Patrick Starrr, costume designer Janty Yates, Sarah Tanno, makeup artist to Lady Gaga, and Gaga’s hairstylist Frederic Aspiras.
Patrizia Reggiani’s wedding dress worn by Gaga stood front and center of the exhibit. Yates told Variety, “This wedding dress was eight to ten weeks in the making. All the lace was sewn by hand and appliqued.”
In picking the nylon red ski suit that Gaga wears on the ski slope. Yates has been asked, “‘Why did I put her in diabolical red?’ I don’t think it’s diabolical. I thought they were in white, and she’d be in red.

A year after a historic win in this category, the hair and makeup race are again transforming actors playing real-life characters. Singer Lady Gaga recently surpised a 19-year-old fan at a make-up turorial.
The incident happened at the celebration of the launch of Gaga's makeup brand, Haus Laboratories. The "Shallow" hitmaker's superfan Brandon Galaz had been invited to the studio, and the 19-year-old, a cosmetology student, was having his make-up done by Gaga's right-hand artist, Sarah Tanno, reports "allure.com".

Unknown to Brandon, Gaga had stopped by at the offices, and was watching from an adjacent room. Midway through the make-up session, Brandon started reading from a heartfelt letter he had penned to the "Shallow" singer thanking her for the impact her music had on his life.
That is when Gaga appeared before him, in a surprise appearance.
An emotional Brandon continued reading his letter, recalling his coming out as gay in front of his family, which "drove a wedge" between him and his father.

Break out the tissues because Lady Gaga has done it again. This month, the singer is featured on the cover of Allure magazine for their October "Best of Beauty" issue. Brandon Galaz is an aspiring cosmetologist and one of Gaga's biggest fans, so she invited him to a Haus Laboratories makeup session with artist Sarah Tanno. During the makeup application, Brandon shared a touching letter he wrote for Lady Gaga. "I don't know what age exactly I knew I was gay, but I always felt different and that I had no one to turn to for advice," he shared. "Your lyrics in 'Born This Way' spoke to me." Before he can finish, Brandon was given the shock of a...

Lady Gaga celebrated the launch of her Haus Laboratories beauty line at Santa Monica's Barker Hangar on Monday night. The 33-year-old singer steamed up the event in not one, but three different black ensembles, giving us flashbacks to her Met Gala appearance from earlier this year. In fact, she was so "snatched" that she didn't know what to do.

During the event, Gaga DJ'd a set and posed for photos with her makeup artist, Sarah Tanno, and producer Bobby Campbell. She also delivered an inspiring speech about the power of makeup before debuting her collection, which is available at HausLabs.com and on Amazon.
"I have always, even prior to my career, wanted to spread love around the world," Gaga told the crowd. "At first I found that way through music, but...

“Vice,” the Oscar frontrunner for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, got a big boost at Saturday’s Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards. It won both of its bids for period/character makeup and special makeup effects. Its Oscar rival “Mary Queen of Scots” lost the race for period/character makeup but won for period/character hairstyling. The third Oscar nominee, Swedish film “Border,” was snubbed by the guild.
Last year, the eventual Oscar champ “Darkest Hour” won two of its three races: special makeup effects and best period/character makeup. It lost best period/character hairstyling to “I, Tonya.”

Bradley Cooper‘s remake of the Hollywood classic had contended at the first eight guild awards unsuccessfully. “Asib: lost best contemporary hairstyling to “Crazy Rich Asians.

The other two Academy Awards semi-finalists — the Swedish film “Border” and Luca Guadagnino‘s remake of “Suspiria” — was snubbed by the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild.

Lady Gaga loves to bring the drama, especially on the red carpet. Now, Sarah Tanno, who frequently works with the star, is sharing how to bring Gaga-level glam to your next holiday party. Pulling from her past looks, the makeup artist points to a look she created for the premiere of A Star Is Born at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival. At first glance, the makeup centers on a metallic blue cat eye, which balanced by Mother Monster's nude, glossy lip and flawless matte complexion. However, when the singer-turned-movie-star blinked or closed her eyes, she revealed the shape of her eyeliner, which goes outward from the outer corner of the eye, then makes a turn into the crease. It's...

Mother Monster, is that you? Lady Gaga went all out for Halloween this year and dressed up as Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands. The "Bad Romance" singer's wore a white jacket, sky-high boots, a black ensemble, a wig and — of course — the character's classic scissor-hands. Sarah Nicole Tanno did Gaga's makeup to make her look like the character. In fact, it took a whole team to put Gaga's look together. Frederic Aspiras did her hair, and she was styled by her sister Natali Germanotta, Tom Erebout and Lisa from the Instagram account @theladybruno. The crew celebrated the haunting holiday together. If you were one of the more than 50 million viewers who tuned into Lady Gaga’s jaw-dropping halftime show, there’s no way you could keep a “Poker Face” by culmination of her 13-minute serenade — which appropriately ended with the songstress showing off her athletic chops and catching a football pass. And in true Gaga fashion, not only were there split-second fashion switch-ups in the midst of her medley, but a mid-performance makeup change, too. To pull off the first of two near impossibilities of the night (the second being Tom Brady’s come-from-behind win) Gaga relied on her makeup artist since 2009, Sarah Tanno.

The two standouts in the makeup and hair races for imagination and glam are definitely “American Horror Story: Hotel” (limited series) and “The Wiz Live!” (special).
“Ahsh” was like Halloween every day with a gallery of ghouls ranging from Lady Gaga’s fashionista vampire, the Countess, to Alex Ward’s creepy Addiction Demon with his drill bit dildo, to Denis O’Hare’s scene-stealing transgender bartender, Liz Taylor.
Meanwhile, “The Wiz” upped the live musical for TV by blending the Broadway show and movie into a new urban experience.
Lady Gaga’s 111-year-old Countess was the centerpiece for both makeup designer Eryn Kruger Mekash and hairstylist Monte Haught. Gaga had the opportunity to show off 65 glam looks throughout the 20th century. The actress’ personal makeup artist, Sarah Tanno, collaborated with Mekash on the designs, and Mekash’s husband, Mike, did all of the blood-related prosthetics.

For makeup designer Eryn Kruger Mekash, every day was like Halloween on “American Horror Story: Hotel,” with a gallery of ghouls ranging from Lady Gaga’s fashionista vampire, the Countess, to Alex Ward’s creepy Addiction Demon with his a drill bit dildo, to Denis O’Hare’s scene-stealing transgender bartender, Liz Taylor.
Plus, there was an assortment of victims— most of them junkies— either sewn together or to the mattress of a bed, requiring challenging prosthetics.
“We had a lot of blood gags this season— more sliced throats than we usually do,” Mekash said. “So getting all those rigged and keeping the challenges of actual production up was a lot of work. They shot two or three episodes a day with three units, which meant a lot of prosthetic organization.”
The 111-year-old Countess runs the mysterious Hotel Cortez in Hollywood, and Gaga had the opportunity to show off 65 glam looks throughout the 20th century. The actress’ personal makeup artist, Sarah Tanno, collaborated with Mekash on the designs, and Mekash’s husband, Mike, did all of the blood-related prosthetics.
“She was turned into a vampire in the late ’20s, so we established all of the looks with Rudolph Valentino and his wife, Natacha Rambova [the costume and set designer],” Mekash recalled. “We saw ’30s makeup and the ’70s, which was her big heyday with disco, and then there was a time in the ’80s with Angela Bassetts’ character [Ramona Royale]. Then we had the modern-day stuff, which was incredibly glamorous.”
Speaking of Bassett’s Royale, her look ran the gamut from Diana Ross in “Mahogany” to various Blaxploitation actresses.
But, of course, Gaga’s Countess wasn’t the only vampire. There was also the young brother and sister. “I wanted to keep the vampire children subtle with pink, shiny makeup with dark circles to make it seem like there was extra blood in their bodies,” added Mekash.
The biggest challenge was The Addiction Demon, which took four-and-a-half hours to apply each day with a team of three artists. Created by Dave Anderson of Afx, he was wrapped in layers of sheets and covered in transparent jelly.
“Initially, it was all foam with prosthetics underneath, and there were layers and layers of silicone and also silicone liquid that could be made into sheets,” Mekash explained. “There was a chest piece and arm pieces and a facial mask that was glued down. Alex was covered from tip to toe— it was almost total sensory deprivation.”
For Liz Taylor, O’Hare endured a total body shave and showed off gold, red, black and blue sets of nails throughout the season.
“His look was patterned after Taylor in ‘Cleopatra’ and the eye makeup was inspired by an old bartender that [creator] Ryan Murphy met a long time ago,” Mekash said. “It was the first time that Denis ever wore such makeup.”
