Ben Gibbard’s double-duty shift is continuing into the new year. On Thursday, the bands he fronts — The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie — announced that they have extended their co-headlining tour in the new year.
The two bands performed the albums they released in 2003 — Death Cab’s Transatlanticism and the Postal Service’s influential Give Up — on each tour date. They’ll do the same on the new dates.

Death Cab for Cutie’s major label debut album Plans turns 15 this week, and to celebrate, the band will be streaming the album’s 2006 short film Directions on their YouTube page. The film features visuals for every song on the record, each by a different director.
“Fifteen years ago we made our major-label debut with our fifth studio album Plans. We told ourselves that it was just another album, that now being on Atlantic Records was no big deal, but it was and we knew it,” bassist Nick Harmer wrote...

Death Cab for Cutie released a dreamy new song, “Autumn Love,” from their upcoming album Thank You for Today, out August 17th.
The track is built on layers of guitar: a strummed acoustic, ringing electric leads and Nick Harmer’s high-octave bass. Frontman Ben Gibbard taps into a trademark melancholy, singing, “No more lighthouses to deceive me/ Just leave me floating on the open ocean and let the moonlight take me anywhere.”
The Rich Costey-produced Thank You For Today, the band’s ninth LP, follows 2015’s Kintsugi. Band members Dave Depper and Zac Rae,...

Death Cab for Cutie unveiled a gauzy new torch song, “I Dreamt We Spoke Again,” from their upcoming album Thank You for Today, out August 17th via Atlantic.
The track is built around shuffling drums, an undulating guitar line and somber synth strokes that warble beneath Ben Gibbard’s soft, longing croon. “I dreamt we spoke again,” he sings, “It’d been so long/ My mind filled in the blanks/ I dreamt we spoke again/ It’d been so long/ Your voice was like a ghost.”

It's the end of an era for Death Cab for Cutie. Founding guitarist Chris Walla announced on Wednesday that he'll be leaving the alternative rock band after 17 years, in a statement released to Seattle-based music blog Slog. His last concert with the group will take place at Victoria, BC's Rifflandia Festival on September 13. You can find the full text of Walla's statement below, and further down a response from his Death Cab bandmates Ben Gibbard, Nick Harmer and Jason McGerr: "Short version: I’m leaving Death Cab for Cutie. My last show with the band will be September 13, 2014, at the Rifflandia Festival in Victoria, BC. I hope you guys can make it. Longer version: I think I long for the unknown. It might be that simple. I will miss being a quarter of this band, and will support whatever course Death Cab for Cutie chooses from here. I am profoundly grateful to Ben,...

So this is the new era of Death Cab for Cutie. Guitarist Chris Walla, one of the founding members of the alt-rock band, is leaving the group after 17 years. Frontman Ben Gibbard, bassist Nick Harmer and drummer Jason McGerr announced Walla's departure today on their website. "We've had an incredible 17 years of making music with Chris," they said in a statement. "We are very proud of what we've accomplished together, including our 8th studio album which we have just put the finishing touches on. We will miss Chris and wish him all the best in the next chapter of his career. We are excited about sharing new music, and seeing all of you very soon." Lest this leave...

Foster the People and others help break down the Stone Temple Pilots frontman's Christmas video.

With Christmas just around the corner, it's safe to assume you're enveloped in holiday tunes — whether inescapably at the mall or blaring from your laptop by choice. Beyond the old standards, there's Michael Bublé's chart-topping Christmas album and even Justin Bieber's first Christmas contribution, Under the Mistletoe, but you might not be aware that Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland released his own holiday disc this year.
That's right, and while Weiland's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year dropped back in October, even some of his contemporaries were unaware of his Xmas effort. That gave us the perfect opportunity to share the album's first music video with the bands on the bill at Kroq's annual Almost Acoustic Christmas earlier this month.

All four members of Death Cab For Cutie grew up in and around Seattle, during a time that outsiders have since deemed "The Grunge Explosion." But for those living around the city — particularly those not old enough to get in to most shows (thanks to the city's now-abolished Teen Dance Ordinance) — they didn't know anything about an explosion. They just knew there were a ton of really great bands they were missing out on.
And back then, as is still the case today, most of those bands played Seattle's Crocodile Cafe, with gigs being advertised in the city's late, lamented free paper The Rocket. And for kids on the outside, like...

Seattle — When Ben Gibbard first moved to Seattle, he spent most of his time wishing he could just go back to Bellingham, Washington. That was where he had gone to school (Western Washington University) and where, sometime around 1997, he had formed Death Cab For Cutie (whose new album, Codes and Keys, is out Tuesday, May 31). And it was with his bandmates that he had packed up and moved 90 miles south, to the Emerald City, in the hopes of making it as an honest-to-goodness professional rock-and-roll band.
Only, things didn't really work out that way, not at first, anyway. For the first time in their career, the guys in Death Cab were scattered — back in Bellingham, they lived...

Death Cab for Cutie originally formed sometime around 1997, in the idyllic college town of Bellingham, Washington (unofficial nickname: "The City of Subdued Excitement"), but it was in a city 90 miles south where they'd really make their mark: Seattle.
Most of the band had grown up in towns surrounding the Emerald City during the height of the so-called "grunge explosion," and their teenage years progressed somewhat accordingly — Ben Gibbard, who was raised in Bremerton, would take a 55-minute ferry trip across the Puget Sound to watch bands play at the now-defunct Ok Hotel in downtown Seattle — so, when they decided to make the move from Bellingham to the proverbial big city to try...

"Some boys don't know how to love," Ben Gibbard sings on Death Cab for Cutie's new Codes and Keys album, perhaps unaware of the fact that he's just summed up the band's entire career in the process.
Of course, the object of that love — self, location, family, girls — has never really been as important as the sentiment itself. Death Cab truly are at their best when they're at their lowest, their most lost, be it on songs like "Styrofoam Plates" and "405" or albums like Transatlanticism and Narrow Stairs. They are, for all intents and purposes, a band that seems incapable of solving the eternal quandaries of the heart.

Seattle — On their upcoming album, Death Cab for Cutie long to go home, even if they're not quite sure where home is anymore. Codes and Keys is practically propelled by that paradox — home may be four walls and a bed, it may be the space between our two ears or it may be neither. After all, we carry so much of ourselves with us at all times that one could reasonably argue that we are always at home, even when we're on the road. But, then, the band wonders, if we're so connected, why do we so often feel nothing of the sort?
The answer they seem to come up with over the...

Here's a whole lot of Death Cab for you... The band has released a pair of new pieces to the "Codes and Keys" puzzle this week. First, there's the video to "Home Is a Fire," co-directed by famed artist Shepard Fairey and Death Cab for Cutie bassist Nick Harmer. It's good instruction on how to post word art all around the unwashed walls of your own town. "Obey" stencils meet civil disobedience. Just lovely. There's also new track "Underneath the Sycamore," which I'm having a hard time distinguishing it from every other Dcfc song. I need a couple more listens just to...

Death Cab for Cutie's "You Are a Tourist" video was very much a temporary thing ... in theory, it existed only once, shot and broadcast live, in one continuous take, to the Internet, where it now lives in a state of eternal repetition.
So, you can sort of understand why, when it came time to shoot the second clip off their upcoming Codes and Keys album, they were looking for something a bit more permanent. Which is why they turned to artist Shepard Fairey for help. With his large-scale, very-public murals (chances are, you've seen his "Obey" work adorning the wall of a metropolis near you), a sort of forced permanence seems to be part of his master plan.

Death Cab for Cutie's "Meet Me on the Equinox" wasn't the most likely choice for the first single off the "New Moon" soundtrack, but in a lot of ways, it was the best choice. Death Cab for Cutie are very pale. And from the Pacific Northwest. That's seemingly where the similarities between them and Edward Cullen or Bella Swan (or anyone else in the "Twilight" series) end. So when it was announced back in August that their "Meet Me on the Equinox" had been tapped as the first single from the "New Moon" soundtrack, you could almost feel the collective "huh?!?" that arose from Stephenie Meyer's loyal subjects. "About eight days ago, they called and were like, 'Guess what, your song has been chosen as the first single, and now we need a video,' " bassist Nick Harmer laughed. "It...

Full audio stream of Death Cab for Cutie's "Meet Me on the Equinox" has finally emerged. Instead being debuted at 2009 MTV Video Music Awards like it was previously planned, the lead single from "The Twilight Saga's New Moon" soundtrack album was unveiled on MTV online publication and the band's MySpace.
"The song at its core is just about meeting another halfway, because life is very short, because there's only a brief period of time to really connect with people, and that it's important to recognize that," frontman Ben Gibbard previously told MTV about how the song fits to the story of the film. "I just wanted something that kind of tonally matched the story and the scenes within the film, so they could kind of be put alongside but not be telling a narrative you're watching on the screen."

Gearing up for its debut on September 13 at 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Death Cab for Cutie's new song "Meet Me in the Equinox", which is the lead single off "The Twilight Saga's New Moon" soundtrack album, has got its official preview. 40 seconds long, the snippet reveals how the chorus of the track will be like.
In addition to the song's clip, details about what to expect from its accompanying music video are also disclosed. "The whole idea behind the video is that this house that we're in, this crazy ski lodge of a building here, it's going to get cut together with scenes from the film, sort of like it's a place that might be in Forks, sort of a place that might be next door to Bella's house or something," the band's guitarist Chris Walla told MTV News.

Stephenie Meyer has always had a love of music and it’s obvious from the first Twilight film that her input is duly noted. The first soundtrack featured tracks from rockers like Muse and Linkin Park, and who could forget the two impressive Paramore songs? We’re still waiting for the full track listing for The Twilight Saga: New Moon soundtrack but the first single has been announced. Death Cab For Cutie, the Washington state rockers, have written and recorded an exclusive track for the sequel.
The song will be titled “Meet Me on the Equinox” and Death Cab For Cutie say they “are very excited to be a part of this amazing series of novels set in our own backyard. It just seemed a perfect synergy that a band from the Northwest would create a song for a series of novels set in the Northwest.”

The Wolf Pack spoke out this weekend at the Official Twilight Convention in New Jersey about life on and off the set. Alex Meraz opened up about getting the role and quickly learning that Googling yourself never leads to good things. The shirtless actors spoke with fans at the Q&A session and said "By Googling myself, I'm not going to find anything I like. I'm arguing with an 8-year-old!" Chaske Spencer chimed in to talk about the director Chris Weitz envision the phasing sequences as a "pop like popcorn." Fans lined up and waited hours to take pictures and get autographs singed by the members of the wold pack and yes they are as hot in person! A request came in yesterday regarding the Bella Swan wig controversy and to be honest I had not heard about it until I began Googling it. Turns out that fans are very...

Although their new single "Meet Me on the Equinox" will not arrive until September 13, Death Cab for Cutie have revealed what they want to do for its accompanying music video. This four-piece band hope to have "The Twilight Saga's New Moon" cast as guest stars in the video.
Bassist Nick Harmer told MTV, "I'm of the mind-set that the more Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner you can throw in the video, the more popular the video is going to be." Explaining further about where the band will be if the video is invaded by the movie's stars, he said, "Nobody wants to look at us, so we'll probably be standing in the shadows."
Before revealing their interest to tag the three main characters of the film, Nick shared about the concept of the video. "The safe route would be to go with the straight performance video, like that Paramore video.

At first glance, Death Cab for Cutie might seem like an odd choice to write the first single from the upcoming "New Moon" soundtrack.
After all, unlike Paramore — whose "Decode" kicked off the ultra-successful "Twilight" soundtrack — none of the guys in Death Cab are "Twilight" obsessives. But before you judge too harshly, consider Dcfc bassist Nick Harmer: He's been to Forks, Washington — the sleepy town author Stephenie Meyer set the "Twilight" saga in — and he's been there for fun.
"Oh yeah, I've been there a bunch. And I went before it was the place from the 'Twilight' books. It's definitely one of those Northwest towns you hit once or twice, and it's awesome she chose to set the novels there,...

Death Cab for Cutie's single entitled "Meet Me on the Equinox" will be the first single off the soundtrack to Taylor Lautner's upcoming film "The Twilight Saga's New Moon". The tune, which is confirmed to be the lead song from the film, is scheduled to be premiered on MTV.com Sunday, September 13, the same day during when 2009 MTV Video Music Awards will be kicked off.
The bassist of the band, Nick Harmer, calls the song "pretty dark and brooding, lyrically." Though it is specially made by the band's lead singer Ben Gibbard for "New Moon", it doesn't vary much from Death Cab for Cutie's other singles.
"I'm pretty sure Ben didn't try to write a song from the perspective of one of the characters from the novel. The emotional stuff is what he homed in on, because that's what we do," the 34-year-old bassist tells MTV News.

It has been confirmed that a song titled "Meet Me on the Equinox" from Grammy-nominated band Death Cab for Cutie will be the lead single off "The Twilight Saga's New Moon" soundtrack album. The new song will be debuted on September 13 at 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.
"We didn't expect it would be chosen for the first single - we were thinking it would be a part of the soundtrack, maybe," bassist Nick Harmer offered his comment to MTV regarding the matter. "I have no idea if ['Twilight' author] Stephenie Meyer approved it or what. It's been an exciting process, because we've been so removed from it."
Spilling the beans on what the song will be dealing with, Nick said, " ... A lot of the lyrical content [frontman] Ben [Gibbard] writes also happens to line up with what the characters are going through in the film. Basically the 'Twilight' series is about love, and that's a major theme for us.
