The voice cast for the upcoming DC Creature Commandos animated series at Max (the newly rebranded name for HBO Max) has been set, and it’s filled with familiar names. Frank Grillo, David Harbour, Maria Bakalova, Indira Varma, Zoe Chao, Alan Tudyk, Sean Gunn and Steve Agee have been announced as voicing the titular characters in the James Gunn-written series. Grillo’s casting is extra special, with him playing Rick Flagg Sr. Gunn noted on Twitter that Grillo will be playing the role across “all media,” so expect him to show up as the character in live-action projects too.
Rick Flag Sr is the father of Rick Flag, who was played by Joel Kinnaman in Suicide Squad and its Gunn-directed sequel, The Suicide Squad. Notably, he was killed off by John Cena’s Peacemaker in that movie, and it’s possible to if and when Peacemaker Season 2 happens,...

Frank Grillo, David Harbour, Maria Bakalova, Indira Varma, Zoe Chao, Alan Tudyk, Sean Gunn and Steve Agee have been set as the voice cast for DC’s new animated series Creature Commandos.
The seven-episode show focused on the creation of a black ops team out of prisoners (a precursor to the Suicide Squad in DC mythology) was part of the initial 10 film and TV projects revealed in January by new DC Studios co-chairmen and CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. Those projects are interconnected in the Dcu in the Chapter 1 phase “Gods and Monsters.”

James Gunn's 2021 film "The Suicide Squad" features a lot of unusual animal people. There is a human weasel monster called Weasel (Sean Gunn), there is a young woman who can wrangle rats called Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), there is a stories-high intelligent starfish monster named Starro, and most amusingly, there is King Shark, a bone-headed (cartilage-headed?) bruiser that is half-human and half-Carcharodon. He spends his time on screen eating human heads, ripping people in half, and being concerned that he doesn't have any friends.
King Shark was voiced by Sylvester Stallone, but visually realized using advanced motion-capture CGI. The on-set actor who provided King Shark's movements was Steve Agee, a friend of the director, who also played a character named John Economos, a sidekick to Viola Davis' character Amanda Waller. Agee had appeared in several of Gunn's previous projects, including "Super" where he played "Comic Book Store Jerk," and...

Of all the misfits in James Gunn's "Peacemaker" series, Steve Agee's John Economos, aka Dye Beard, is the most relatable. The role of the tired, sad, unappreciated It professional speaks to the universal feelings of loneliness, insecurity, and general disdain. John got one of the best lines from "The Suicide Squad" trailer ("We've got a freakin' kaiju!") and my personal favorite monologue in Gunn's follow-up spin-off show, "Peacemaker." Appearing alongside fantastic actors and wacky characters, Agee manages to make his mark.
He's also damn funny.
The actor also played Steven Ned Myron III on "The Sarah Silverman Program," and works as a comedian and musician. Agee reprised his role as Amanda Waller's tech expert in a mid-credits scene of a certain recent superhero movie, and will be returning in the upcoming second season of "Peacemaker," which is not yet in production (but is definitely coming). /Film...

We all construct narratives about our lives, drafting and redrafting them with friends, family and ourselves. But what if they were packaged by a documentarian and broadcast on Netflix, a streaming platform with 230 million subscribers across 190 countries? How would it affect you, and would anyone care? This is the subject of Subject, a documentary about documentaries, and it is a process that Margie Ratliff knows all too well.
Ratliff was in her early twenties when she appeared in The Staircase, a documentary series about the trial of her father Michael Peterson, who was charged, convicted, and then released for the murder of his wife, Kathleen. In the interest of ‘transparency’, Peterson invited cameras into the trial and into Ratliff’s life, exposing her confusion and anguish for all to see. “I can’t tell you how painful it is,” says Ratliff, now in her 40s, “…reliving my mum’s death over and over again.

Nobody knew what to make of "Night of the Hunter" when it screened in 1955. Directed by actor Charles Laughton from a script by James Agee, it broke every rule in the book. It's a fairy tale that's nastier and more adult than anything Disney could produce. It's a black-and-white film made at a time when color movies were coming into vogue. Famous actor Robert Mitchum plays one of the scariest villains in film history. There's a stretch in the middle that swings into magical realism, and the end is a Christmas movie. "Night of the Hunter" was so hated by critics at its release that Laughton decided never to make another film. These days it's heralded as not just one of the greatest pictures of its era, but one so miraculous in its construction (despite its foibles) that it might as well be a UFO.
Many have lauded Charles Laughton as the film's guiding genius,...

Opening the 26th Fantasia Int’l Film Festival in Montreal on July 14, writer-director Kc Carthew’s “Polaris” is her sophomore pic after her multi-award-winning debut feature, “The Sun at Midnight” (2017). A teaser, bowing exclusively in Variety, reveals a dystopian thriller set in a frigid, snow-blanketed wasteland.
An expansion of her award-winning short film “Fish out of Water,” which also bowed at Fantasia in 2015, “Polaris” turns on Sumi, a young girl who has been raised by a polar bear. Set in 2144, it follows Sumi as she tries to evade capture from a ruthless Morad hunting party. She stumbles across Frozen Girl with whom she strikes an unlikely alliance. “Together they race ahead of the vindictive hunters towards the only guiding light Sumi knows, the Polaris star,” the synopsis goes.
