Jimmy Fallon and Paul Rudd once again teamed up for a return to ’80s video glory, this time recreating Dead or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)” on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” Thursday night (April 25).
The video for the 1985 hit — which reached No. 11 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart –is a shot-by-shot replication, down to the late Pete Burns’ signature eye patch, hip swivels, choreography and bravado. The original clip, directed by Vaughan Arnell and Anthea Benton, was an homage to the Hindu God of Protection, the six-armed Vishnu, re-imagined by Burns amidst images of a disco ball and gold flags. Dead or Alive originally financed the video themselves, Burns had stated in interviews. The song was originally included on the Dead or Alive album, “Youthquake.”
The song has had multiple second lives, too — Adam Sandler famously sang it in the opening montage to 1998 film...

George Michael‘s PR game hasn’t been stellar for awhile, but he’s such an unforgettable and, uh, devastating vocalist that it’s easy to re-celebrate him. He’s like the male Dionne Warwick in this way. Who cares about a snarly Celebrity Apprentice stint when she sang “Walk on By,” mortals? Who cares about George Michael’s snafus when he gave you everything from “Father Figure” to “Jesus as a Child” and the ever-awesome “Outside” video? We don’t have another George Michael. When he reappears, it’s worth listening without prejudice and burning a leather jacket or two if we’re so inspired.
The new song is called “Let Her Down Easy” and the gorgeous, circus-themed black and white video is directed by Vaughan Arnell, one of Britain’s foremost and most innovative music video directors. Interestingly it’s not one of George’s own tunes, but...

The John Landis-directed mini-movie – first shown publicly 30 years ago this week – influenced a generation of directors including Spike Jonze, turned music promos into an industry, and established MTV as a cultural force
John Landis was in London in 1983 when Michael Jackson called to ask if he was interested in making a video for Thriller, the title track of the album he'd released a little under a year before. Seemingly unaware of the time difference, Jackson had called at 2am UK time and the sleepy director had to feign knowledge of the song, which he hadn't heard. Jackson, for his part, hadn't seen Landis's films Animal House, The Blues Brothers or Trading Places; he wanted Landis because of An American Werewolf in London. Landis said he would do the video if it could be a short film, and Jackson embraced the idea. The 13-minute film that resulted changed the music video for ever,...

One Direction will be seen like never before in their new music video, according to its director. Vaughan Arnell, who directed the new clip for 'Kiss You', has explained that putting the group into a studio meant them showing off their "tongue-in-cheek" personas.

Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow team up in a music video for their joint track "Shame", marking their first on-screen reunion since Williams left Take That fifteen years ago. Directed by Vaughan Arnell, it sees the former bandmates sharing a spot of topless bromance in the rocky mountains surrounding Los Angeles.
The duet track is listed in Robbie Williams' upcoming compilation "In And Out Of Consciousness: The Greatest Hits 1990-2010". He said of the collaboration, "It's incredible to listen to the album and realize that it's already been 20 years of making music and playing gigs. And the great thing about the album is that it's not only a celebration of my past but also a bridge to the future. The fact that part of the future includes a name from my past makes it all the more poignant for me."
