Pakistan’s Central Board of Film Censors (Cbfc) has banned Pakistani-American filmmaker Iram Parveen Bilal’s “I’ll Meet You There” a week ahead of its theatrical release in the country.
The Cbfc found the film unsuitable for public exhibition on the grounds that it “does not reflect true Pakistani culture, portrays a negative image of Muslims, wrong/dubious interpretation of Islamic teachings and our society which is against the norms of Islamic, social and cultural values of Pakistan.” The Cbfc has refused to grant a censorship certificate on these grounds.
The film was selected for SXSW’s narrative feature competition in 2020 before the spread of the coronavirus pandemic forced the festival’s cancelation. Mini-studio Level Forward acquired North American virtual theatrical rights and impact distribution privileges for the film and rolled it out in 2021.

Exclusive: Motion Picture Exchange (Mpx) has sold North American distribution and Nft (non-fungible token) rights of Brian Baumgartner (The Office) music-comedy Electric Jesus to 1091 Pictures.
The 80’s throwback movie charts the story of a never-famous teen Christian hair metal band which spends the summer of 1986 playing rock music meant to ‘make Jesus famous’.
Written and directed by Chris White, the film features Baumgartner alongside Judd Nelson (The Breakfast Club), Shawn Parsons, Rhoda Griffis and Claire Bronson. Pic is produced by Chris White and Emily Reach for Hair Band Glory, LLC.
1091 Pictures and Mpx have specifically negotiated rights around the films’ Nft and digital merchandising rights, marking one of the first market deals for these rights in the independent space.
James Andrew Felts, CEO of Mpx commented: “The practical application of non-fungible media rights will have a material impact on deal structures similarly to the SVOD rights craze of the mid-2000’s.

"This is her home, these are her people." Freestyle Digital Media has revealed the first official trailer for an indie drama titled I'll Meet You There, which was originally supposed to premiere during last year's SXSW Film Festival before it was cancelled. A Muslim cop goes undercover at his estranged father's mosque while his daughter hides her passion for a forbidden dance, then uncovering a shocking family secret. From SXSW: "I'll Meet You There defies storytelling conventions and stereotypes in favor of multi-dimensional characters who display their humanity at every turn. Filmmaker Iram Parveen Bilal's thoughtful writing and directing have yielded enlightening performances in a story of family and betrayal that is both unique and universal." The film's big cast includes Faran Tahir, Nikita Tewani, Muhammad Qavi Khan, Sheetal Sheth, Shawn Parsons, Andrea Cirie, Nitin Madan, Michael Pemberton, Samrat Chakrabarti, and Rachit Trehan. I screened this last year and it's a mess,...

Mini-studio, Level Forward has acquired North American virtual theatrical rights and impact distribution privileges for “I’ll Meet You There,” a portrait of three generations of a Muslim-American family. The company will roll out the film from Feb. 3, 2021.
The film was one of ten chosen from 1,305 submissions for SXSW’s narrative feature competition earlier this year before the spread of the coronavirus pandemic forced the festival’s cancelation.
It was directed by Pakistani-American filmmaker Iram Parveen Bilal, who made her feature debut with the acclaimed “Josh” that played the international festival circuit in 2013.
“I’ll Meet You There” follows Majeed, a Chicago policeman, and his teenage daughter Dua, a gifted ballerina, who are unexpectedly visited by Baba, Majeed’s long-estranged father from Pakistan. Majeed is given a career-making opportunity that he can’t turn down, but it requires him to use his father’s help to gain access to the local mosque,...

Eric Kissack's “The Gunfighter” is a finalist for the top prize at TheWrap's third annual 2014 ShortList Film Festival. Written by Kevin Tenglin, the story follows a weary gunfighter who walks into a bar, looking for a drink. What he finds instead is a building full of raunchy people and an audible, bloodthirsty narrator. The cast includes Shawn Parsons, Scott Beehner, Eileen O'Connell, Jordan Black and Timothy Brennan, though it's the unseen narrator voiced by “Parks and Recreation” star Nick Offerman who steals the show. "The weary gunfighter walked slowly through the saloon..." Something fun to start the day - another short film, this one a "period western meta comedy short film" titled The Gunfighter. It's smart, it's funny, its got foul language, and it actually looks good. The Gunfighter, starring Nick Offerman as the narrator and Shawn Parsons as The Gunfighter, just won the Audience Award for Best Short Film at the La Film Fest and was also a Best of the Fest Selection at the Palm Springs Short Fest. You'll see why once you watch this. With all the language it may by Nsfw, but it is certainly worth watching whenever you get a chance. Enjoy! Thanks to our friends at SlashFilm for the tip. From the official Vimeo: "Just another period western meta comedy short film. Featuring the mellifluous voice of Nick Offerman. I hope you enjoy it!" The short was directed...

I will forever beat the drum that Hollywood needs more westerns because honestly there are only so many times I can say 'I'll be your Huckleberry.' I've not found the limit yet, but trust me I'm working on it. We need more wild west one-liners guys. Luckily 'The Gunfighter' is here to help. Voice over narration may have fallen out of favor with filmmakers as a lazy way of doling out exposition, but maybe it's time for a comeback. 'The Gunfighter' is a quick clever piece of meta comedy directed Eric Kissack and written by newcomer Kevin Tenglin. It is a promising debut that asks the question, "What if the characters could hear everything the narrator is saying?" The answer is a quickly escalating series of secrets usually reserved for the depths of our super secret inner thoughts we never share even with our best friends or therapists.

Directed by J. Rick Castaneda
Written by J. Rick Castaneda
USA, 2014
Writer-director J. Rick Castaneda’s indie film Cement Suitcase has an off-kilter winning spirit that soars above its quirky pathos. Infectiously witty, irreverent and bouncy, Castaneda’s nifty narrative takes a charming approach to spotlighting one young man’s dalliances in wine and life lessons decline. Beautifully shot and fortified with solidly impish performances, Cement Suitcase is a reminder that our existences–no matter how stable, stagnant or scattered–are unpredictable and can never be as definitively defined as a vintage bottle of Merlot. Castaneda’s adventurous direction and smart writing arms this soothing dramedy gem with the right kind of gently wacky reflection and radiance.
Wine salesman Franklin Roew (Dwayne Bartholomew) leads somewhat of a dreary livelihood in Granger, Washington…a small-town rural hamlet situated in the Yakima Valley.
