Two highly-anticipated second feature films from U.S. underground filmmakers will be making their World Premieres all the way over at the 64th annual Edinburgh International Film Festival, which will run for twelve days on June 16-27. The films are Rona Mark’s The Crab and Zach Clark’s Vacation!.
The Crab, which screens on June 21, is the touching story of a verbally abusive man born with two enormous, mutant-like hands; while Vacation!, which screens on June 20, tracks four urban gals let loose in a sunny seaside resort down South.
Both Mark and Clark previously screened their debut features at Eiff. Mark’s Strange Girls screened there in 2008 and Clark’s Modern Love Is Automatic screened in 2009. Both films also ended up as runners-up in Bad Lit’s annual Movie of the Year award, again Strange Girls in 2008 and Modern Love in 2009. Sadly, these two masterpieces are still unavailable on...

The Sentimental Engine Slayer by Omar Rodriguez Lopez is about a young boy named Barlam whose inability to connect with the conventions of the world throws him (and us) into a morass of noisy disjunction complete with smashed crucifixes and bludgeoned cross-dressers. And yet, even though I found the film to be somewhat expectable, and by the hour mark I was checking my watch, in the end Lopez had won over me over. The Sentimental Engine Slayer is a pretty decent romp.
I have to admit, I had intended to dislike this film from start to finish. I’ve known Lopez’s work since “Lopez” was “Omar,” from the beginnings of the At the Drive In (his first “super band”) days, and have always found his stuff to be postured a great...

As a film critic, I live by the words of Roger Ebert, “It is not what a film is about, it is about how it’s about”. These are the words I think of whenever I see a movie or write a review. With The Sentimental Engine Slayer it’s definitely the latter. This is probably the most daring film I’ve seen so far during the Tribeca Film Festival. It is an interesting voyage, a bizarre fantasy. Filmmaker and musician, Omar Rodriguez Lopez (At The Drive-In & The Mars Volta) has ventured into the absurd with his new film.
The movie is set in the small border town of El Paso, Texas and follows the life of Barlam. Barlam is a naive and meek grocery store bagger who spends his free time assembling small model cars of 67′ Mercury Cougars. He lives with his sister Natalia and her clueless boyfriend, Zack.

Opening with the strangling of a prostitute, and ending with something of an unwitting role reversal for our protagonist, The Sentimental Engine Slayer is a psychosexual nightmare leeching off of David Lynch existentialism... Or... by way of Jean Cocteau and LSD, a tragicomic spin on slacker/scenster woes. Whatever way you look at it, Omar Rodriguez Lopez has cut out an ambitious section of the cinematic cloth to draw upon, with this, his feature debut where he also writes, produces, scores and stars.
Though a lot of what he does may feel like rudimentary scribbles, doodling fragments of fragments, to the point of where the film gets truly uncomfortable in its shit, consider it like this; It is kind of like being a drug mule with a very mixed bag of narcotics shoved up your rear. It's painful, and maybe you don't want to do it, but man, that rainbow...

Yes boys and girls we're just a few days out from the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival here in New York City, which I will be attending all by my lonesome. On the evening of Wednesday, April 21st, things kick off with the world premiere of... uh... Shrek Forever After. Yeah, Ok... while that may not be totally twitch inducing, the fest has some eclectic offerings from April 22nd - May 2nd, that I'm sure will float yer boats.
From established fest successes making one last hurrah before release, like Neil Jordan's latest fairy tale twist, Ondine, and J Blakeson's Isle of Man set thriller The Disappearance Of Alice Creed, to premieres like longtime Shane Meadows' collaborator Paul Fraser's debut,...

On tonight’s Tribeca Preview, we take a look at a film that I cannot wait to see more of. One of the more innovative, beautiful, and haunting bands to come across my radar over the past 5 years has to be The Mars Volta, with Omar Rodriguez Lopez on guitar. This film, Sentimental Engine Slayer, filmed in 2007, is finally premiering this month at the Tribeca Film Festival, and from what I hear from Rudie, this movie sounds as challenging and innovative as the albums Rodriguez has produced.
Sentimental Engine Slayer will be screening on April 22nd, 23rd, 25th, and 27th. For a complete list of screenings, visit the Tribeca Film Festival homepage. You can also visit the filmmakers website as well as become a fan on the film on Facebook.

While most of the eyes in film are on either SXSW or ShoWest out on the West Coast, folks out on the East Coast are gearing up for Tribeca Film Festival coming up next month. Last week, the fest announced the first group of films, which included the World Narrative films, the Documentaries, as well as Showcases and Special Events.

Edward Burns, Chuck Workman and Alex Gibney will all unveil the world premieres of their newest films at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival, running from Apr. 21-May 2 in lower Manhattan.
The three filmmakers will present their latest work as part of the fest's Encounters section, announced today, which encompasses 14 films from established talent. Filling out its program, the fest also revealed another 17 films in its Discovery section, which focuses on emerging talent, and another eight films in its Spotlight section, featuring movies built around performances from such artists as Casey Affleck, Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba, Robert Duvall, Colin Farrell, Amanda Peet and Rebecca Hall.
"Our Discovery and Encounters sections complement one another -- one highlights fresh talent that is breaking onto the scene, while the latter continues to offer original films that reflect pop culture and contemporary issues," senior programmer Genna Terranova said. New York native Burns will bring "Nice Guy Johnny,...

This week I present a selection, below, of more of my favorite posters from the International Film Festival Rotterdam where the walls of every theater and meeting place were crammed with posters and flyers. Though a couple of these may have appeared at earlier festivals, all were new to me. The one design that I loved that I could not find a better image of can be seen high on the wall above: the poster for Cameron Jamie’s 10-minute ode to furniture humping Massage the History (yes, even short films have posters at Rotterdam). Here are sixteen of my favorites:
Above, clockwise from top left: Bruno Safadi and Noa Bressane’s Brazilian counterculture doc Belair; Emmanuel Laurent’s nouvelle vague history lesson, Two in the Wave, whose poster features a photo of an astonishingly young Truffaut and Godard; Serge Bromberg’s doc on Henri-Georges Clouzot’s unfinished L’enfer,...

Playing in the Bright Future section at Iffr is the debut feature which is written, directed, produced, composed, and starred in by music phenom Omar Rodriguez Lopez (know for The Mars Volta) and I have to say it looks utterly fascinating. Seriously folks, check out the trailer.
The Sentimental Engine Slayer tells the compelling, confounding tale of the overdue coming of age of a twenty-something misfit named Barlam. Barlam's awkward transition from boy to man is as much the story of struggling to find one's essence in a world of stereotypes as it is an indictment of the distorted reality of family life in the disengaged 21st century. A bottom-rung grocery bagger whose neo-incestuous relationship with his addict sister, Natalia, causes him no small amount of grief and disillusionment, Barlam seeks solace in the convoluted wisdom of what few male peers are available, namely his androgynous, alcoholic boss, Oscar, and the sister's simple-minded boyfriend,...
