Don’t despair about the end of another non-existent British summer – UK TV always gets good when the weather turns, as the nights draw in and we all retreat indoors, finally getting sick of rainy barbecues and being chased by wasps in pub gardens.
This year is no different, so you can expect your 2023 autumn TV watchlist to include some compelling original dramas, from true crime shows covering some of the UK’s most shocking cases to enthralling depictions of real-life events, from the arrival of the Windrush generation to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Throw in some time-travelling crime-solving, mediaeval sword fights and a criminal gang on the run from a ruthless assassin, and we’ll be enjoying our self-enforced hibernation in front of the telly all the way until Christmas. Here’s what’s coming up, in order of release date.

Nicholas Hoult (The Great) did a deep dive into the world of foodies to prepare for Searchlight Pictures’ twisted horror comedy The Menu. Hoult plays one of the guests at an exclusive – and isolated – restaurant who discovers his delicious meal comes at a higher price than anticipated.
“It was very difficult because I had to eat at nice restaurants and watch lots of food shows,” said Hoult, laughing. “It was one of those amazing things that the more of Chef’s Table I watched, the more that I was in awe and amazed by these singular-minded, dedicated chefs who committed their whole lives to their craft. And then I was starstruck because Dominique Crenn, who was the food advisor on the movie and designed the menu, she was on set one day and I’d seen her episode and I was like, ‘Oh my God, it’s her!’

Emmy voting has closed, but for those who just can’t get enough, many costumes from Emmy-nominated shows have taken over the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (Fidm) Museum in downtown Los Angeles.
The exhibition showcases costumes from over 22 programs, 13 of which are Emmy-nominated in the three different award genres: period, contemporary, and fantasy/sci-fi. The series will run through Nov. 5.
Costumes on display include the iconic red swimsuit from Hulu’s “Pam & Tommy,” the regal gowns from “Bridgerton” and outfits worn by Jean Smart in “Hacks.”
Nick Verreos, Fidm chair of fashion design, highlighted some of his favorite outfits. Verreos tells Variety, “Of course, all of the costumes are highlights, but the Emmy nominees are the real stars of the show.”
“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” costumes by Donna Zakowska.
“These costumes from ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ‘ are from Season Four, when the series transitions into the 1960s.

When we think about period drama, the image we hold in our minds is always wrapped up in a show’s setting. The setting is an interesting moment in historical or imagined time, separate from our own, but the setting is also the stuff in it; it’s how different everyone looks. Sometimes that stuff means swords and armor and dragons, and the martial, fantastical nature of a “Game of Thrones” is what makes it visually distinct.
But even when chainmail isn’t involved, it’s the look of the costumes that bring us closer to characters in the past or make them seem all the more imposing and distant. It’s the one place where maximalism and lavishness are always acceptable – “Bridgerton” isn’t a show with costumes; the costumes are in many respects the show.

If it wasn’t enough for The Great to be Emmy-nominated for its costumes, costume designer Sharon Long earned praise from her stars too. Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult appeared a panel for Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees event and noted that their respective Catherine the Great and Peter III wardrobe is their favorite in their entire careers.

“I think the coronation outfit I wore is my most favorite costume I’ve ever worn,” Fanning said. “In Season 3 there are a couple that might have it beat. We’re trying to up the ante, but Sharon constantly just pulls out all the stops. Also working around the growing pregnancy belly this year; she took maternity wear to a whole other level in 18th century Russia.”
Hoult has worn everything from mythological Greek armor in Clash of the Titans to post-apocalyptic War...

Let’s face the facts, it’s an amazing feat of athleticism just to make it to the Ufc. However, everyone worth their salt as a competitor wants one thing: to wear the championship belt. Unfortunately for the athletes on this list, chances are that they will never hear Michael Buffer refer to them as the New Ufc Champion.
Olympic competition, collegiate wrestling, championships in other organizations, being in the best Mma camp in the world; none of these things guarantee even a title opportunity in the Ufc. This is a list of popular fighters. Most of them have the charisma to put butts in the seats. Many of them are knowledgeable enough to coach. But the hard facts say they just aren’t going to get that Ufc belt.

It’s out with the old, in with the new over at Bellator this Summer, as founder Bjorn Rebney has been cut loose, and Strikeforce founder Scott Coker has been brought in to replace him. Coker has a lot of goodwill in the Mma world with both fans and fighters from his Strikeforce days. Originally a kickboxing promotion, Strikeforce got into the Mma game in 2006 and quickly became the number two promotion in the world, with fights airing live on Showtime. With a solid TV deal behind him, Coker handed out lucrative contracts to the likes of Jake Shields, Dan Henderson, Gilbert Melendez, Nick Diaz, Josh Barnett, Fabricio Werdum, Robbie Lawler, Nate Marquardt, Andrei Arlovski, Alistair Overeem, and most importantly, Fedor Emelianenko.

It was a very successful debut in New Zealand for the Ufc with Ufc Fight Night: Te Huna vs. Marquardt a.k.a. Ufc Fight Night 43. Delivering an action-packed card that had the Kiwi fans roaring right up to the moment their home-town hero went down in the main event, the card was certainly better than it looked on paper.
With six finishes to four decisions, and at least half those decisions active fights, there’s no question that Ufc fans can be happy with the event, but where do the fighters go from here?
Nate Marquardt got a fresh start back at middleweight, after stating that “God told me” to move back up from welterweight. Divine intervention or not, the move worked and brought Nate “The Great” his first win since 2012.
American heavyweight prospect and wrestling stand-out Jared Rosholt controlled Soa Palelei for three rounds, surprising many – with three...

Ufc Fight Night: Te Huna vs. Marquardt was an early start for fight fans outside of Oceania. Or maybe a late one, just depending on how you approached it – a late night, or an early morning. The kick-off for the event, numerically Ufc Fight Night 43, was 2:30Am Est. Hosted in Auckland, New Zealand, it marked the Ufc’s first show for Kiwi Mma fans.
In other words, it was an event that required a lot of coffee for those of us on the other side of the globe who follow the sport.
Headlined by James Te Huna vs. Nate Marquardt, the card featured 10 fights, all of which aired on Fight Pass. The headlining fight, a middleweight bout, saw both fighters changing weight classes – Marquardt going back up, Te Huna dropping down. Both fighters had lost two straight coming into the night.

“If ignorant both of your enemy and yourself, you are certain to be in peril.” – Sun Tzu
He’s considered by every Mma outlet, website, and expert to be the greatest fighter of all time. The numbers are astounding: 33-6-0, 20 Knockouts, 6 Submissions, and 7 Decisions. He went unbeaten for seven years and in that time amassed 14 successful defenses of the Ufc Middleweight Title. His counter striking and anticipation is the best anyone has ever seen. His knockouts occur in the blink of an eye, his Jiu-Jitsu is like entering a tangled web, and his movement is like water. He’s considered the closest thing to Bruce Lee in competition. He’s a ghost, a ninja, and a soon-to-be legend of the Mma world.
He’s Anderson “The Spider” Silva and he was coming off the first Knockout loss of his career as he headed into Ufc 168.

Now that Strikeforce has finally closed its doors, parent company Zuffa can officially announce the full list of fighters that have been brought over to the top-level promotion, the Ufc. The introduction of these fighters, mainly in the Mw, Ww, and Lw division, gives added life and excitement to a promotion putting on more events and more fights each year, particularly with the massive Fox deal. In truth, several notable Strikeforce fighters have already made the transition over to the Ufc over the last year, including Alistair Overeem and Ronda Rousey.
From the heavyweights, Daniel Cormier (11-0) is the sole entrant to be initially announced. He is a former Olympic wrestler and heavyweight grand prix winner. The weakest division in terms of depth got two new faces in LHWs Gegard Mousasi (33-3-2) and Gian Villante (10-3). While Villante is still a prospect, expect Mousasi to immediately make noise with...

Boxing movies aren't exactly my cup of tea, but when I heard Tom Hardy was going to be starring in Warrior, about two brothers who are also mixed martial arts fighters, I was intrigued. Then the movie poster was released, and I was really intrigued. And judging from the comments, so were a lot of our readers.
It turns out there is also a book of fine art portraits by Tom Palen called The Men of Warrior featuring Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton, Erik Apple, Nate Marquardt, and Ron “Rj” Messenger. We won't have our review of the movie until next week (we liked it), but to tide you over until then here are some pictures from the book that we can share with you.
The guys have some pretty different looks, so there should be something here for everyone.
Enjoy!

[1] Whether it's from a punch to the jaw or ogling women, when you cast two of the most sought after male actors in Hollywood as feuding siblings dead set on a mixed martial arts championship, odds are you're going to turn a few heads. Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton do just that in the upcoming sports drama [2] Warrior, directed by Gavin O'Connor. Hardy is a Marine home from war who asks his recovering alcoholic father, played by Nick Nolte, to train him for a massive fight tournament. Simultaneously, and unbeknownst to them, the pair's estranged brother/son, played by Edgerton, is training for the same tournament. I've seen Warrior and while I'm technically embargoed from publishing my thoughts, I will say this is a movie you'll want on your radar. It doesn't matter if you're an Mma fan or just a fan of great drama and acting, Warrior delivers the goods [3]. Big time.

Ufc 122: Marquardt Vs. Okami
Taking place at the Koenig Pilsner Arena in Oberhaunsen, Germany, Ufc 122: Marquardt vs. Okami features the headling middle-weight match between Nate “The Great” Marquardt and Japanese star Yushin “Thunder” Okami, as well as a further nine bouts of devasting, hard-hitting, grapping action – including Dennis Silver vs. Andre Winner, Amir Sadollah vs. Peter Sabatta and Kyle Noke vs. Rob Kimmons.
