Life on the road may sound glamorous to some, but burnout and mental health challenges have affected musicians of all stripes since they first stepped on stage and struck a guitar chord on tour. The pandemic has worsened the load with many artists nixing tours and dates in favor of self-care.
The new book Touring and Mental Health – Music Industry Manual (out now via Omnibus) seeks to help musicians navigate the lows. It’s edited by Tamsin Embleton, who used to have a career managing artists and tours. Now, she...

Four Tet has emerged victorious in his legal battle with Domino Records, which centered around a contested royalty rate for streaming and downloads based on a contract signed over 20 years ago.
In a series of tweets Monday, June 20, the electronic artist Kieran Hebden offered the “bodacious update” that Domino had recognized his original claim that he should be paid a 50 percent royalty for streams and digital downloads, not the 18 percent that Domino had been giving him. The crux of Hebden’s argument was that streams and downloads should be treated...

Nearly a decade after Thom Yorke, Burial, and Four Tet first collaborated on a pair of tracks, the Radiohead singer, dubstep pioneer, and electronic musician have reunited for a surprise 12-inch boasting two new songs, “Her Revolution” and “His Rope.”
News of the 12-inch black label vinyl first arrived via the Instagram of London record store Phonica, one of seemingly two shops (Sounds of the Universe the other) to receive physical copies of the extremely limited edition Xl Recordings pressing. Dance music masters Major Lazer and Disclosure will be heading off to Washington’s The Gorge Amphitheater this spring to headline Sasquatch! Festival, one of the Pacific Northwest’s biggest annual music events.
While the lineups at Sasquatch! tend to reflect a more rock oriented background, this year’s eclectic roster is loaded with great electronic acts, with M83, Jamie Xx, Tycho, Four Tet, Grimes, Rudimental, Big Grams, and Chet Faker all confirmed as performers for the event. Non-electronic acts like The Cure and Florence and the Machine grace this year’s lineup as well.
Disclosure and Major Lazer both released huge albums in 2015 that helped usher dance music into the mainstream, and their presence at the festival will ensure that electronic music gets some major representation at the fifteenth annual Sasquatch!

2015 is turning out to be the year of Eric Prydz. The Swedish DJ/producer’s Epic 3.0 performance at Madison Square Gardens last year propelled him into the progressive house stratosphere, and while he’s already been around for over a decade, the boost in popularity has become a platform by which he’s released three monthly EPs leading up to his upcoming self-titled debut album.
As of today, though, he’s added an all-new radio show to his growing list of power plays.
Where the conventional electronic music artist might go the safe route of commemorating an album with a one-off BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix, Prydz has opted to kick off a recurring radio show which will take place every two weeks on Apple Music brainchild Beats 1. In this first edition, the virtuoso premieres 11 new songs – including album originals which we can now identify as “Lost Dragon” and “Multo,” as...

Although British electronic-music pioneer/Aphex Twin mastermind Richard D. James has promised the upcoming Syro will be his “most accessible” album to date, the name of its first single (and the first piece of new music he’s released in 13 years) doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue: “minipops 67 [120.2] [source field mix].” But don’t let the title scare you off — this is actually some of the most inviting music we’ve ever heard from this enigmatic and occasionally inscrutable producer. As “minipops” flows and burbles through an elegantly paced five minutes, it serves as a refresher of just how many electronic artists have picked up cues from James in the years he’s been silent: Four Tet, Caribou, even Daft Punk. James has teased the September 23 release of Syro with some predictably mysterious high jinks (he flew an Aphex Twin blimp over London, then officially announced the album’s release ... on the...

Between Robyn declaring “Don't F*cking Tell Me What to Do" on 2010’s “Body Talk” and Neneh Cherry’s 1988 hit “Buffalo Stance,” it should be clear that you don’t want to mess with these Swedish pop divas. In the new video for their song “Out of the Black,” the duo prowls an urban jungle over a collage of Occupy movement imagery. The synth-driven anthem pairs Cherry’s soulful vocals and Robyn’s high-pitched coo with assertive beats courtesy of Four Tet and electronic duo RocketNumberNine. The Dario Vigorito-directed video plays up the dark chaos in the song through rapid-fire images, which include footage of protests, the stock market and men in suits. Robyn and Cherry essentially float through this bleak collage, looking ready for anything in their bright-colored rain slickers. “Out of the Black” is off Cherry’s new album “Blank Project,” her first solo effort since 1996's “Man.

Cherry recently told Pitchfork that she’d wanted to work with Robyn for some time. “Robyn and I had been talking about...

They may have a "silly, sweary name", but they headlined the Park stage at Glastonbury, featured in Danny Boyle's Olympic ceremony, and have just released their third album
In June, Benjamin Power attended his first-ever Glastonbury. He sat around, enjoyed the good weather, wandered over to the Healing Fields, "had a bit of nitrous oxide, just because I felt like I probably should". As the sun went down and Mick Jagger wound up his pre-gig pilates, Power headed over to the Park Stage. There he met his musical partner Andrew Hung, and together Fuck Buttons set about headlining Glastonbury.
Asking a band like – or, indeed, named – Fuck Buttons to play against the Rolling Stones might have seemed like a stunt booking on the part of the Eavises. Who, exactly, would turn down watching Mick and Keef do Brown Sugar in favour of a group the Radio Times carefully asterisked,...

Director Jamie Chambers wants his film, screening at this year's Edinburgh film festival, to be more than an elegy for the nation's oral tradition of singing and storytelling
Home advantages don't come much stronger than the one the new Scottish film Blackbird will have when it screens this week at the Edinburgh film festival. It isn't just that the picture's writer-director, Jamie Chambers, was born and raised in the city, or that he is artistic director of Transgressive North, a community of Scottish artists that has collaborated with the likes of Irvine Welsh, Jarvis Cocker, Alexander McCall Smith and Four Tet. Nor is it merely that this movie, inspired partly by Powell and Pressburger's Hebridean romance I Know Where I'm Going!, will be vying for the prestigious Michael Powell award. The very subject of Blackbird is Scotland – specifically, the oral tradition of singing and storytelling. Despite initiatives to keep that tradition alive,...

The xx broke into the indie music scene in 2009 with their mesmerizing, whispery self-titled album -- and every hipster from Brentwood to Brooklyn embraced their emotional lyrics and addictive sound.
Bandmates Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim started making music together at age 15, but they've known each other since they were 3 years old. Hailing from south London, Croft and Sim studied at the Elliott School, the same institution that claims Hot Chip, Burial and Four Tet among its alumni talent.
But the xx's path wasn't fated: Croft admitted in an interview with The Huffington Post that she never had the intention of becoming a musician. She took up the drums to get out of class, she picked up a guitar after not being too great at the drums, and she started singing just so she could learn the guitar a little better. Bandmate Jamie Smith joined the group later, rounding out the trio.

Total Loss is a much less insular listening experience than How To Dress Well’s (alias of singer/producer Tom Krell) debut, Love Remains, and most of the reverb and lo-fi production is cleaned away: it all sounds very clear but mostly manages to retain the intimate bed-sit solitude of Krell’s debut. Opener ‘When I Was in Trouble’s’ opening piano refrain is dolefully buoyed up by the surging and distant churn of thunderclouds. ‘Cold Nites’ icy piano notes sound like their coming straight from Dracula’s castle, with a warped bass-line that wanders out ominously beneath an infantilised vocal sample.
‘Say My Name Or Say Whatever’s’ vice-tight melody is Four Tet circa Rounds with most of the serotonin washed out, but the child-like choral whisper at the end of the song is truly angelic and tinged with the kind of warm-hearted feeling you get from a carol song.

“The idea that this is an awesome job is completely accurate,” music supervisor Gabe Hilfer told us we caught up with him for an interview last week. And who can blame his enthusiasm?
Like any dyed in the wool music fan, Hilfer was willing to lose sleep to dig for new tunes. His youth was spent staying up Thursday nights armed with a 120 minute cassette tape (remember those?) in order record the famed hip hop centered program “The Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show.” He too eventually became a DJ and radio host, and after college, spent a few years working in the music industry. He eventually transitioned into helping source music for television and movie projects, and is now the head of the L.A. offices of Clear Songs. The music supervision company boasts an impressive track record, having worked on projects like “The Wackness,” “The Wrestler,” “Luck,” “How To Make It In America...

British "super producers" Four Tet and Burial are known for collaborating, even with super-super types like Thom Yorke on occasion. Now they've quietly revealed a new joint effort minus the Yorke. Meet "Nova," a track Four Tet tweeted early last night with little fanfare or explanation. So far the best guess for the chilled-out track's future is Pitchfork's theory that it'll be the 13th release on Four Tet's Text Records label, since Four Tet included the phrase "TEXT013" in his 140 characters. Take a listen to the mysterious "Nova" below -- it's pretty great.

You wanted it, you got it. Whatever you think of this weekend's outrageous found footage party movie "Project X" there is no denying that the filmmakers provided a serious playlist to accompany the debauchery on screen. And while 13 of those songs were collected for the official soundtrack that was released earlier this week, we've heard from more than a few readers that they want to know every song that was featured in the film. Well, we've tracked down that list and here it is: all the music that rocked your eardrums in "Project X."
And really, there is something here for everybody. For people looking for straight up party bangers there are more than a few options, but for stuffier folks who like their music to be critically approved and maybe slightly more underground, bands like The xx, Four Tet, Amon Tobin, Animal Collective and LCD Soundsystem are all featured.

Thom Yorke unveiled a recent mix he put together on British radio station Xfm Thursday evening. The 25-minute mix, which the Radiohead frontman dubbed Money Back Mix, includes a new Yorke cut a few minutes in called “Twist.” It’s pretty dense stuff, but if you’re into the heavy dub beats and just curious as to what he’s been up to, this is for you. The set also includes Four Tet remixing Tinariwen (the best part, in our humble opinion), and some of the remixes from “King of Limbs,” according to www.onethirtybpm,” which has posted the stream (and download) of Yorke’s mix,...

Radiohead are giving "The King of Limbs" and extra, erm, leg of life. The British band has been releasing 12" singles all summer of remixed tracks from their latest album, with contributions from artists like Caribou and Four Tet. Now, all of those reduxes are being compiled into a 19-track, double-disc and download package, "Tlol Rmx 1234567." Radiohead chose their collaborators out of a crew of "electronic artists and producers who have been exciting and inspiring the members of the band." That would be you, Jamie xx, Sbtrkt, Jacques Greene, Modeselektor... [Jump...] "Bloom" and "Morning Mr Magpie" were apparently the most...

A certain kind of music festival has emerged in recent years. In the mid-nineties, the festival scene was stagnating: Glastonbury was a ticketless free-for-all, V was a soulless corporate cash-in and Reading was where teenagers set portaloos on fire. Sensing a gap in the market, some enterprising sorts started up what became known as the ’boutique festival’ – multi-arts, small but perfectly formed, family friendly, an uber-relaxed atmosphere and an often grand country setting. Positioning itself as the ‘original boutique festival’ is the Big Chill, now in its seventeenth year and a veteran on the festival calendar. This is a festival which does exactly what is says on the tin, promising a weekend of extreme relaxation with a blissfully mellow soundtrack in a beautiful setting. Nestled in an idyllic Herefordshire valley, the beautiful site – home to the festival since 2002 – is a working deer reserve year-round, the private grounds of nearby Eastnor Castle,...

Earlier this month we announced that Radiohead would be releasing a 12-inch of remixes of tracks off of King of Limbs. We’ve already got a sneak peek. This past weekend, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke partnered up with Four Tet’s Kieran Hebden for a night of electronic glory at London nightclub Plastic People. There he previewed a track off of the upcoming album, Caribou’s remix of “Little by Little.”...

Check This out! This is a music video of “Smile Around the Face,” by European electronic music artist Four Tet. Not only is it a great song, and a great video, but it is one of the finest examples of non-verbal acting I have ever seen in my life. The actor in the video is Mark Heap. Really, do check it out.
I know that this is completely out of the blue, but as I’ve recently come across this actor, I figured I’d help spread the news that he’s fabulous. Heap is an Indian-born English actor who has been doing mostly TV work as of late. I would Really like to see this guy do more movies, and get into some more significant roles. Not that he hasn’t done movies, oh no! Heap has seen roles in such films as Stardust, The Calcium Kid, and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory...

Word's out that Thom Yorke and mysterious underground rapper Doom (aka Daniel Dumile) are exchanging ideas in the studio, with a potential full-length album in the offing. You may know Doom from his 2005 collaboration with Danger Mouse, The Mouse and the Mask, where Doom spit his trademark free-associative, cartoon-influenced lyrics bolstered by Danger Mouse's unique, sonic support. Since the release of Radiohead's The King of Limbs, Yorke has been honing his DJ chops by, among other things, dropping in on an L.A. gig by experimental laptop artist Flying Lotus, and thrilling the crowd with a surprise ninety-minute DJ set earlier this month. He also released a twelve-inch single with electronica wizards Four Tet and Burial. Yorke has actually worked with Doom before, remixing the tune "Gazzillion Ear," off Doom's Born Like This album, back in 2009. Doom, keeping it real, revealed that he'[...]...

Electronic auteur revisits his past, digs deeper into hypnotic dance grooves While he’s hardly been inactive during the five years since the last Four Tet LP (releasing a set of remixes, a Fridge album and no less than four collaborations with avant-garde jazz drummer Steve Reid), Kieran Hebden has lost some momentum since he revolutionized electronic music with his use of folk instruments on 2003’s Rounds. That he hasn’t really tied up the loose ends of that experiment into some definitive statement is both a small disappointment and a large testament to his creative restlessness....

Over the course of a truly inspired career, London’s Four Tet, a.k.a. Kieran Hebden, has remained ahead of the curve, sidestepping obsolescence by folding new strains of sound into his already rich jazz/hip-hop/folk base. Last year’s Ringer Ep found Hebden reveling in the hypnotic, developing 10-minute songs that ditched the dissonance of 2005’s Everything Ecstatic in favor of calmer waters and subtler effects. There Is Love In You, his first proper album in five years, is smoother still, and to great effect—if this isn’t the best Four Tet record yet, it ...

Manic Street Preachers have announced details of a remixed version of their recently-released ninth album. Tracks from Journal For Plague Lovers have been taken on by a number of artists, including Andrew Weatherall, Underworld and Four Tet. Bassist Nicky Wire said: "It's been a pretty overwhelming response to be honest. We chose people for each track hoping they would bring us back something unique, that they'd find something we maybe hadn't in the track. "Without fail, they've done that. Heartfelt thanks from us to everyone involved." Manic Street Preachers have been remixed by a number of artists in the past for B-sides to their singles. The band's 2002 best-of Forever Delayed was originally packaged with a bonus disc of mixes, while their 1992 debut Generation Terrorists (more)...
