Viewers of Martin Scorsese’s 2010 film or readers of Dennis Lehane’s 2003 novel, both named Shutter Island, may still be haunted by the Ashecliffe Hospital. Now HBO and Paramount Television are charting a return to the island-bound mental institution with the development of a TV series based on the film that’s aptly titled, Ashecliffe. Scorsese is set to direct the pilot off a script by Lehane.
Deadline reports that Ashecliffe will follow events at the mental hospital for the criminally insane before the timeline of the first film, in which Leonardo DiCaprio played Edward “Teddy” Daniels, a Us Marshal investigating the disappearance of a patient from the cryptic facility in 1954. The show will take a close look at the founders of the hospital and the way they approach treating—at times controversially—the mental illnesses of patients.

HBO is reportedly in the early stages of developing "Ashecliffe," a TV series prequel to the 2010 Martin Scorsese feature "Shutter Island".
The story would be set at the isolated mental hospital depicted in the Leonardo DiCaprio film with the events in the series taking place before those in the film and Dennis Lehane's 2003 novel on which the movie was based.
The plan is to explore the hospital's past and the misdeeds by its founders. If it moves forward, Scorsese would direct the pilot while both Tom Bernardo and Lehane would pen the script.
Scorsese, Lehane, Brad Fischer, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Killoran Davisson, Laeta Kalgridis, Rick Yorn, Chris Donnelly, Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Mike Medavoy and Arnie Messer would serve as executive producers.

With True Detective and Breaking Bad duking it out at the Emmys tonight, it’s never been clearer that television is on the verge of overtaking cinema in terms of entertainment value, if it hasn’t already. And now we’re hearing about another small-screen project with absolutely extraordinary potential – HBO and Paramount are reportedly plotting a Shutter Island-related series tentatively titled Ashecliffe, with intentions for that thriller’s director Martin Scorsese to helm a pilot scripted by Shutter Island author Dennis Lehane.
No word yet on whether Laeta Kalogridis, who worked with Scorsese to adapt Lehane’s book into the aforementioned hit film that Leonardo DiCaprio starred in, is involved with the project, but we do know that Ashecliffe will be set before the events of the film, with a focus on the dark, tormented history of the island’s central hospital. Deadline reports that the gritty series...
