In Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” 19th-century scientist Baxter (Willem Dafoe) restores Bella (Emma Stone) to life with the brain of her unborn child — and the surreal visual design reflects her wild imagination as she progresses from infant to liberated woman.
To achieve that, the director instructed production designers James Price (“Paddington 2” art director) and Shona Heath (a collaborator of fashion photographer Tim Walker making her film debut) to create a fantastical world that was a throwback to the old-school style of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s “Black Narcissus,” with miniatures, painted backdrops, and rear screen projection (high-tech LED screens created the oceans and skies).
“My experience in film is zero,” Heath said in an on-set interview in the video above, “so this wouldn’t be standing if it wasn’t for James.”

Smart, clever and inventive, Poor Things is described by the filmmakers as “the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a young woman brought back to life from the brink of death by the brilliant, daring scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe).” Based on the novel by the late Scottish author Alasdair Gray, director Lanthimos and scriptwriter Tony McNamara also reference Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein,” making this off-beat coming-of-age fantasy a kind of “feminist Frankenstein” that is part dark comedy, part adventure thriller and pure smart entertaining fantasy with an uplifting message.
Poor Things is a wild science fiction coming-of-age tale set in an alternate Victorian world that is part steam punk and part anachronistic fantasy from the writer/director who gave us The Favorite and The Lobster, Yorgos Lanthimos.

Director Yorgos Lanthimos and cinematographer Robbie Ryan, not unlike the family at the center of “Poor Things,” like to experiment.
In their previous collaboration on “The Favourite,” Lanthimos and Ryan trained the audience’s eyes to function like unctuous couriers through extreme wide lenses and a slinking set of camera movements that matched the actors’ physicality. But the approach to period and the techniques Ryan and Lanthimos allow (and don’t allow) themselves on “Poor Things” show a whole other gear of what the pair can do visually.
In this latest film — based on the Alasdair Gray novel about Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), brought back to life thanks to a timely transplant of her unborn infant’s brain into her own skull (for science!) — there’s still plenty of extreme wides and a distinctive fish-eye look that heightens key moments. But Ryan curated a pared-down set that makes the world...

In Yorgos Lanthimos‘ comedic and fantastical Poor Things, an adaptation of Alisdair Gray’s novel, the mad scientist does what Dr. Frankenstein never dared to do: he lets his creation free out into the world instead of seeking to kill it. It’s not fear that drives this decision but love, and it sets the tone for a dazzling, bizarre, and imaginative fairy tale of a journey fueled by curiosity.
The mad scientist here is surgeon Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe), a disfigured medical experiment himself at the hands of a cruel father. His creation is Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a recently deceased woman he’s revived by replacing her brain with that of her unborn baby, rendering her an infant in a grown woman’s body. Godwin tenderly raises Bella as her young mind develops, enlisting an assistant in medical student Max (Ramy Youssef) to document her early stages of re-life.

Prolific producer and director Shawn Levy fell in love with “All the Light We Cannot See” long before he was attached to adapt the 2014 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Anthony Doerr into a new Netflix limited series, out Thursday, November 2. “I did not read it as a filmmaker. I read it as a reader,” he said to IndieWire over Zoom. “By the time I got back from whatever holiday I was on where I read that book, the rights were already unavailable, having been snatched up by Scott Rudin and Fox Searchlight.”
The story of a blind French teenager Marie-Laure and German soldier Werner connecting via radio, providing each other salvation under the devastation of WWII, caught Levy right as he’d made the deliberate decision to take a step back from directing films, and focus on producing. “I had, at that point, directed maybe like nine movies in 11 or 12 years.

Could Oscar winner Emma Stone (La La Land) be back in the Oscar hunt with Searchlight Pictures’ Poor Things? According to critics who’ve caught festival screenings, the answer is a resounding yes.
“From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents,” reads Searchlight Pictures’ synopsis. “Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.”

Exploring the sexuality of Emma Stone’s “Poor Things” character was an important part of the storyline, says director Yorgos Lanthimos.
During a Friday press conference at the New York Film Festival, the filmmaker explained why Stone’s character Bella Baxter’s sex scenes were “a very important part of her journey.
“We felt that we shouldn’t shy away from it,” Lanthimos, 50, said. “It would feel very disingenuous to tell this story about this character who is so free and so open, and then be prude about the sexual aspect of it.”
“Poor Things” — based on the 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray — is a Victorian tale of love, discovery and scientific daring that centres around Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life in a Frankenstein-like fashion by an eccentric but brilliant scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe).

Emma Stone is a woman who gets to start from scratch in Yorgos Lanthimos’ unbound and astonishing new feature, “Poor Things.” For most of us, life is comprised of knowledge and circumstance that take decades to accumulate until we die. For Stone’s Bella Baxter, that process happens in very fast motion, thanks to a reanimating procedure that finds her, once a dead woman floating in a river, now alive again with her unborn child’s brain inside her head.
Bella, née Victoria, is a living breathing tabula rasa unfettered by societal pressures, propriety, or niceties. And Stone, in her most brazenly weird performance to date, plays her like a toddler taking its first steps and saying its first words — until by the end of “Poor Things...

In recent years, there has been a campaign of sorts to stress the universality of so-called “Black stories.” One reason for that pitch is it’s meant to draw non-Black audiences and eschew the more-reductive “Black films” categorization.
IndieWire spoke to multiple Black filmmakers, on and off the record, about the “Black film” terminology: Is it limiting? Does it pigeonhole creators? The responses were as varied as the people who answered the questions. Some embraced being identified as “Black artists,” defined by a shared experience that’s inextricable from who they are. Others found it limiting, preferring to foreground their creativity over race or ethnicity.
As conversations go, it’s a minefield. Many are unwilling to tread on that ground, but perhaps that’s exactly why it needs to be had.

With fewer entries than ever before thanks to the pandemic, the nominations for the 73rd annual Emmy Awards had less room for error than in years. And yet somehow, voters found a way. While the majority of the categories seemed to have a consensus that was largely confirmed this morning—Ted Lasso! The Flight Attendant! The Crown!— that doesn’t get Emmy voters completely off the hook for some of today’s blunders. Here are the biggest surprises and straight-up snubs from this morning’s nomination announcements.

No, it’s not a Christian movie but a sequel to The Big Lebowski. Well, sort of a sequel. The Jesus Rolls, which debuts on DVD and Blu-Ray on May 5, is not directed nor written by Joel and Ethan Coen, but by John Turturro, who played the bowling-loving, spandex-wearing character who calls himself “the Jesus,” and doesn’t pronounce it the way Hispanics usually do.
If there were a Big Lebowski sequel, the bowling adversary of the Dude and pals Walter and Donny, is not the first character that would spring to mind for most audiences. But this is not really a Lebowski sequel. Instead, director John Turturro is playing the same character as in the Coen brothers classic, but now that character has been transported to another movie, for a remake of the 1974 French sex farce Les Valseuses,...

Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone face off as rivals for the queen’s favor, in the hilarious dark historic comedy The Favourite. This satiric romp mixes bedroom farce, biting satiric wit and history with a touch of the tragic for a very entertaining excursion into rapier wit. Of the two historical films released this week, this is the fun one, while the other is drama. Still, this fact-based story has its serious and tragic undertones. Set in early 18th century Britain in the reign of Queen Anne, The Favourite is a wild ride, a battle of wits and ambition at court mixing history and comedy in a way that brings to mind Jane Austen crossed with Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon with a dash of Moliere.

Ever since standing inside a frozen moment at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis – looking across to where the bullet must have issued, taking the life of an icon of nonviolent resistance – the image of Dr. Martin Luther King has become something more intimate to me. Black and white schoolroom footage becomes flesh, the voices less distant, when you stare into the full horizon of the cultural landscape that fought against basic life rights for African Americans in the South and those who began to turn the tide. Ava DuVernay’s Selma takes us to that headspace, shows us the familiar under new lights, ruminates on American history without histrionics.
Kitchens, bedrooms, churches, and the slim streets of Selma are the backdrop of an American revolution, one that seemed far too faded and familiar before Selma took the tactical back room approach to the legend of King’s organized protests for Black voters rights in 1965 Alabama.

In his review, Omar P.L. Moore (PopcornReel.com) says, “Selma is an instant classic, a film that will be revered and applauded throughout the annals of American history, long after we are gone.”
Selma is the story of a movement. The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement.
Director Ava DuVernay’s Selma tells the story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history.

Though he may sound unfamiliar to folks at home, Bradford Young is one of the names to emerge during recent Oscar discussions for his cinematographic work on two films this year: J.C. Chandor’s A Most Violent Year and Ava DuVernay‘s Selma. Both films premiered at AFI Fest.
The 37-year-old director of photography was first recognized for his work at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival for Dee Rees’ Pariah (2011), which took home the excellence in cinematography award. He won the award a second time in 2013 for David Lowery’s Ain’t Them Bodies Saints and Andrew Dosunmu’s Mother of George (2013). He most recently received a Spirit Award nomination for Selma, which was also nominated for best picture and director, and he may very well land his first Oscar nomination this year.
Young previously worked with DuVernay on Middle of Nowhere (2012), which put DuVernay on the map.

The American Film Institute’s AFI Fest opens tonight in Hollywood with the world premiere of J.C. Chandor’s A Most Violent Year. The film stars Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain as a couple trying to run a business and live in New York City during 1981, which was statistically one of the city’s most violent years. This is Chandor’s first film to premiere in Los Angeles. Though the film is hoping to garner some Oscar nominations, only six of the past 14 films to open AFI Fest have gone on to receive Oscar nominations and none have been for best picture.
Of the six films to garner Oscar nominations, the only film to win an award was 2005’s Walk the Line, which resulted in Reese Witherspoon taking home the Oscar for best actress. The Johnny Cash biopic scored four other nominations, including film editing and best actor.

Chicago – The first image that surfaced of Derek Cianfrance’s “The Place Beyond the Pines,” was that of a bleached blonde, tattooed Ryan Gosling seated on a motorcycle. For many viewers, that would be enough to earn their ticket, yet Cianfrance’s brooding epic is bound to give them far more than they bargained for. Some may feel betrayed, others will be hooked.
With the exception of “Brother Tied,” a 1998 effort Cianfrance dismisses as an “exercise in egomaniacal hubris,” the director’s first major feature film was 2010’s “Blue Valentine,” a shattering drama that juxtaposed the dawn and dusk of a relationship between two lost souls (played by Gosling and an Oscar-nominated Michelle Williams). “Pines” unspools an even more ambitious narrative structure, exploring the impact of violence on two generations of men in purely linear fashion. Each segment in the film’s three-act structure is self-contained, shifting the audience’s...
