The new Karate Kid movie, starring Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, was set to have a release date coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the original 1984 movie in June 2024. However, the strikes of 2023 moved this release date to December 13, 2024. Now, the latest upsetting update suggests that the movie will not be released during its 40th anniversary year at all. The new date of release for the movie is May 30, 2025.

The change in dates has triggered a backward domino effect as Sony pushed the date of release of Kraven the Hunter to Karate Kid‘s original date of December 13 this year. This makes the Aaron Taylor-Johnson film one of the only R-rated films during the Christmas holidays this year.

While Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio have never before appeared together on screen, even as they’ve led films in different corners of the Karate Kid universe, they’re getting that opportunity now via a new feature installment in Sony’s hugely popular martial arts saga.
Macchio reprises his role as Daniel Larusso, the karate champion molded by Pat Morita’s Mr. Miyagi, with Chan as Mr. Han, the kung fu master who helped Jaden Smith fend off bullies in Sony’s 2010 Karate Kid remake. Details as to the plot of the film are under wraps, though sources say that it will mark a continuation of the mythology of the original franchise.
Jonathan Entwistle (The End of the F***ing World) is directing the as-yet-untitled film from a script by Rob Lieber, with Karen Rosenfelt producing. Pic’s slated for release by Sony Pictures on December 13, 2024.

Jonathan Entwistle, best known for his well-regarded and award-winning teen television dramas I’m Not Okay with This and The End of the F***ing World, is directing the untitled feature that the studio is positioning as the fusing and continuing the mythology of the original franchise.
A global search for a Chinese actor to play the erstwhile title character launched today, with the Chan and Macchio kicking things off with an introductory video, seen below.
Rob Lieber, whose credits include Sony’s Peter Rabbit and Disney’s Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day, wrote the script. The plot line is hiding in the back of the dojo.

Robert Evans claims to have told Francis Ford Coppola, after an initial private screening of The Godfather, “You shot a saga, but you turned in a trailer.” Unfortunately, Jennifer Esposito’s directorial debut Fresh Kills suffers the same fate, cramming a series’ worth of material into a sweeping feature film. In Fresh Kills, Staten Island, a beautiful suburb that stands just across the water from the city and not far from the infamous landfill, the Larusso family is about living the good life and moving to safety. Patriarch Joe (Domenick Lombardozzi) and wife Francine (Esposito) attempt to shield their daughters Rose and Connie from the family business. There are always little tells, and on moving day the girls discover a box of white powder in the moving van––leading Joe to discipline a foot soldier who later turns up dead.

Watch the canon of classic American mob movies, and you’ll be constantly reminded that families — both kinds of them — stick together. The Vito Corleones and Tony Sopranos of the world are quick to justify the formation of their crime organizations by saying that Italians had to look out for each other when they immigrated to this country with nothing. And they’ll defend their continued shady dealings by saying that they do it all for their wives and children. Crime might be the lifeblood of their communities, but what really matters (in their view) is that mob families always take care of each other.
Of course, the stories never end as happily as they begin. The sacred bonds of family rarely survive the stresses posed by greed, law enforcement, and the massive egos this line of work attracts. Sometimes, all it takes is a guy named Big Sam making...

The Tribeca Festival excised “Film” from its name in 2021, and while it’s true that the annual celebration of all things entertainment has expanded to include plenty of television and immersive programming, the movies make it a must-attend event. This year’s lineup is no exception. It has big-name actors such as Michael Shannon and Jennifer Esposito trying their hand at directing, along with revelatory performances from stars like Nick Jonas. But what makes Tribeca so exciting is that it’s a springboard for bold new voices. As the fest gets ready to kick off on June 7, here are nine movies not to be missed.

Cobra Kai. (L to R) William Zabka as Johnny Lawrence, Ralph Macchio as Daniel Larusso in Cobra Kai. Cr. Curtis Bonds Baker/Netflix In The Karate Kid, William Zabka’s Johnny Lawrence was clearly made out to be the film’s bad guy, a rival in every way to Ralph Macchio’s Daniel Larusso. But, three decades later, when the series Cobra Kai was first pitched, the idea was to make Lawrence — although still Larusso’s rival — a much more sympathetic character. And, as the series has progressed, we’ve even seen an unlikely friendship develop between the two characters. Speaking at a Steel City Con panel, Zabka talked about his feelings regarding the evolution of Johnny Lawrence from the Karate Kid movies to Cobra Kai. This week’s guest is Ralph Macchio.
Macchio has — as he puts it — been wearing Daniel Larusso’s shoes for a long time. Since 1984 in fact, when he first stepped into the role of The Karate Kid. Two sequel films and 34 years later, Cobra Kai was born. The key Karate Kid characters were back! In a TV series! Only now perhaps “kid” was no longer an appropriate title. Sure enough, those who loved the original film and legions of brand new fans leaned hard into the reimagined world of the mid-life Daniel Larusso and his arch rival Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka).
After two seasons on YouTube Red, Netflix snapped up Cobra Kai, and now we’re heading into its sixth and final season. During this podcast chat, Macchio — also an EP on the show — explains that although shooting hasn’t yet begun and he hasn’t seen a script, he...

Sharper is a thriller movie directed by Benjamin Caron with Julianne Moore, Sebastian Stan, Justice Smith, Briana Middleton and John Lithgow.
An elegant and very classic thriller you can enjoy this Friday on Apple TV+.
This movie knows how to balance a slow technique, brilliant actors and classic plot which is totally familiar.
Movie Review
A paused rhythm for this movie about tricksters that is totally predictable and yet manages to fool us from its direct title and its “film noir” look, studied and elegant: it does not bring us anything new and does not promise to do so either, but the entire setting, the characters and its giddy calm rhythm knows how to work with precision to do the exact thing it needs to do at each moment, without getting lost or trying to invent something new.

Knowing that Cobra Kai Season 6 will be the final season is a little bit sad. Cobra Kai gave Karate Kid fans so much joy and introduced a whole new generation of karate kids. At least ending the show now means the inevitable legacy revival will happen even sooner. The final season of Cobra Kai is sure to end with a bang. Here are seven burning questions we hope the Cobra Kai final season answers.

Who watches TV for the main characters?
The supporting characters are usually far more interesting.
2022 provided no shortage of supporting characters running away with the show.
These are the scene stealers of 2022 whose spinoffs we would watch.
Commander Jett Reno - Star Trek: Discovery
The incomparable Tig Notaro brings her signature snark to the role of Chief Engineer but, in actual fact, is the reincarnation of Tos' Bones. Wait, that's not the right term since they're technically contemporaries. Emotional doppelganger. Yeah, that fits.
Who wouldn't give their port side nacelle to see a Young Sheldon-like prequel for Reno as a spunky and brilliant young engineer aboard the USS Hiawatha? Or as a candy-addicted cadet at Starfleet Academy?
Even a Short Trek where she visits family and her wife's final resting place? Maybe Reno will create a holodeck program where she can celebrate their anniversary. Notaro would kill that emotive opportunity with deadpan delivery.

If the revival of "The Karate Kid" franchise in the form of "Cobra Kai" wasn't enough for your martial arts cravings, then Hasbro has a next-level crossover that will both blow your mind and confound your senses. After a collection of action figure two-packs teamed up characters from "Cobra Kai" with the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," Daniel Larusso has been imbued with the might of the "Power Rangers."
Hasbro revealed a trio of action figures taking cues from both "Cobra Kai" and "Power Rangers" by turning a couple of the west coast's finest martial artists into Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. However, instead of suiting up Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and his daughter Samantha (Mary Mouser) in the full Power Rangers suits, they've given them the ninja wardrobes first glimpsed in "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie" back in the 90s. As someone who only saw "The Karate Kid" only a couple of years ago, it's been fascinating to see this franchise blossom into five seasons of must-see television with its sequel series, "Cobra Kai." There's been select cases where the antagonist of a revered movie finds some semblance of redemption in a follow up, but it isn't often that characters like Willam Zabka's Johnny Lawrence become the lead of a franchise. But despite Zabka's magnetic performance, "Cobra Kai" makes it extremely clear that Ralph Macchio's Daniel Larusso's journey is still just as important as Lawrence's.
The Netflix series shows all of the ways Larusso's actions in the first film could be read in a different light through another's perspective. In the span of five incredible seasons, Macchio has become a critical component of this ensemble, as Larusso stumbles and picks himself back up after the challenges thrown his way.

There are two things everyone who has seen "The Karate Kid" has tried to attempt. The first is the famous Crane Kick that Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) employs at the end of the film to knock out Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) for the All Valley Championship, and the second is catching a fly with chopsticks. Obviously, this is a near-impossible task, but with Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) as your sensei, nothing is impossible.
The scene in question involves Daniel watching as Mr. Miyagi tries and retries to nab a fly out of the air with a pair of chopsticks. With true Larusso sass, Daniel asks if perhaps using a fly swatter might make the whole thing go a little faster, but Miyagi uses this opportunity to dispense some of that all-knowing wisdom of his and replies, "Man who catch fly with chopstick, accomplish anything." He then confesses that he has...

Imagining the climax of "The Karate Kid" without Daniel Larusso's iconic crane kick is like trying to listen to John Williams' "Duel of the Fates" without a lightsaber battle. All seems lost after our underdog hero played by Ralph Macchio has had his leg swept by the villainous Johnny Lawrence (Billy Zabka), but thanks to the balancing act of a crane kick, Larusso wins the tournament and scores his winning point with the move.
Ironically, the crane kick almost didn't happen, because it's not only a completely made-up move for the film, but it's ridiculously hard to execute. In Macchio's new memoir, "Waxing On: The Karate Kid and Me," there's an entire passage about the crane kick that almost never was. According to Macchio's book (which /Film's own Jenna Busch recently spoke with Macchio about), the crane kick was invented by screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen, a move that sounded cool...

According to Macchio's book (which /Film's own Jenna Busch recently spoke with Macchio about), the crane kick was invented by screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen, a move that sounded cool...

We're in a full-blown "Karate Kid" renaissance era. The franchise that started with "The Karate Kid" in 1984 not only got three sequels and later a remake in 2010, but it spawned the series "Cobra Kai," which began on YouTube and ended up on Netflix. The first film was the story of young Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio), who just moved with his mom to Los Angeles from the East Coast. He gets bullied by Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), a student at the Cobra Kai karate dojo, and meets a mentor in Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita), who teaches him how to defend himself.
"Cobra Kai" not only gave audiences a chance to see what happened to Lawrence and Larusso later in life, but it brought back characters from the first three films. It's been a huge hit with fans, who remember the first film with tremendous amounts of love. Now Macchio...

So, remember that bit of news about the new "Karate Kid" movie in the works? Weeeeellll, things just got a little more confusing about that whole thing.
The news was that Sony Pictures has dated a brand new "Karate Kid" movie for June 7, 2024 but beyond that the press release was very vague. No attached cast, writer or director and the bizarre phrase "the return of the original 'Karate Kid' franchise."
Why is that bizarre? Because the "Karate Kid" franchise has already returned and returned in a big way with the hugely successful streaming series "Cobra Kai," which sees a grown up Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence coming back together in genuinely unexpected and emotionally complex ways. "Cobra Kai" has wooed fans of the original franchise by playing up the nostalgia while also turning it on its head.

This Cobra Kai article contains spoilers for season 5.
Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio), Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), and Sensei Kreese (Martin Kove) aren’t the only carry overs from the original three Karate Kid films. Far from it, Cobra Kai has been masterfully tapping its source by bringing back cast members from the movies, regularly serving the fans up with colorful Easter eggs.
Some of the original characters, like Lucille Larusso (Randee Heller), Daniel’s mom, have appeared throughout Cobra Kai. She has been seen in seasons 1, 2, and 4, which is more than she was seen in the latter two Karate Kid films. The original Cobra Kai gang from The Karate Kid Part I, Bobby (Ron Thomas), Jimmy (Tony O’Dell), and Tommy (Rob Garrison) were reunited with Johnny in season 2 in one of the most poignant episodes of the entire show – the death of Tommy. It’s an emotional irony when the...

(Spoiler Alert! The following contains spoilers for “Cobra Kai” Season 5)
If you’re a proud couch potato and an expert binge watcher, you’ve likely already crushed Season 5 of Netflix’s “Cobra Kai,” which debuted on the streaming service Friday. That means you now know that Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) has been arrested, the Cobra Kai dojo appears to be finished after winning the All-Valley tournament in Season 4 and the good guys have won. Well, at least for now.
In many ways, Season 5 is all about old wounds finally healing and cementing unlikely alliances for the greater good. But Silver’s global expansion plans are still out there floating in the ether and John Kreese’s (Martin Kove) escape from prison complicates the supposed happy ending. In other words, there’s opportunity for more should Netflix renew the series for a sixth season.

The dojos have mojo: “Cobra Kai” Season 5, the latest installment in the popular “Karate Kid” sequel TV series on Netflix, currently has a perfect 100 critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.
All 10 episodes of the fifth season, which stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka (reprising their roles from the original “Karate Kid” movies), were binge-released Sept. 9 on Netflix. As of Friday, “Cobra Kai” Season 5 registered a 100 Tomatometer score, based on Rotten Tomatoes’ aggregation of 27 critics ratings, as well as a 96 audience score. Season 1 of “Cobra Kai” also has a 100 critics score on the site, while seasons 2 and 3 have a 90 critics score and S4 clocks in at 95. (A caveat: The critics score for Season 5 could decline if Rt incorporates additional reviews that are less than favorable.)
By comparison, many other recent TV premieres have Tomatometer scores in the 80s. Those include Disney+’s “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” (88); Netflix’s “The Sandman” (87); FX/Hulu...

When it comes to the original Karate Kid films, The Karate Kid Part III is unquestionably the worst installment of the trilogy. Part I launched the franchise. Part II took it to Okinawa. Part III nearly killed it. Even Daniel-san himself, Ralph Macchio, rejected the film.
“I was not a fan of how the Karate Kid III came out,” Macchio said to The Hollywood Reporter last January. “I felt the story was only repeating itself and was not character forwarding for the end of Larusso.”
Macchio went on to say it wasn’t a smooth ride for him and that there were parts of the character he didn’t embrace. “I don’t put it on the top of my résumé.”
Is Macchio (and mostly everyone else’s) estimation of Karate Kid III a fair one? And if so, is there any...

It was near impossible not to fall in love with Kenny Payne from the moment he appeared on Season 4 of “Cobra Kai,” the wildly popular Netflix series set in the universe of “The Karate Kid” movies. On his first day at a new school, he is caught dancing exuberantly as the school bus picks him up — and instantly becomes the target of Anthony Larusso, the son of Ralph Macchio’s Daniel Larusso. And it’s a testament to actor Dallas Dupree Young that as Kenny changed in Season 4 to the point where he turns the tables on his bully, that audiences are still rooting for him.
The 15-year-old Young never intended on becoming an actor — his father is Eric Young Sr., a former Major League Baseball player and current first base coach for the Atlanta Braves, and Young thought he would follow in his father’s footsteps. But he went...

This Cobra Kai article contains no spoilers for season 5.
One of the many elements that makes Cobra Kai work is its sense of poetic parallelism. Some might simplify this to well laid Easter eggs, but it’s an aesthetic device akin to literary symmetry, layered screenwriting that elegantly fuses storytelling and homage.
For example, in The Karate Kid Part III, Sensei Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) sent Sensei John Kreese (Martin Kove) away to Tahiti where he got bodywork from shadowy Tahitian gals. In the Cobra Kai season 4 finale, Silver sends Kreese away once again, but this time, to the slammer where he gets a different kind of bodywork from his fellow inmates.
That finale left fans gobsmacked with Silver’s betrayal of Kreese. After exhibiting dubious motivations throughout season four, the real Silver is revealed in all his manipulative glory. Kreese appeared to be pulling the strings, guilt tripping...

In its fifth season, "Cobra Kai" gets both its "Empire Strikes Back" moment and its "Avengers: Endgame" moment, as the legacy sequel reaches its finest moment. The show also throws any resemblance to the real world out of the window and goes full sports anime. This means the show has its own ridiculous set of rules and laws that may not make sense in our world, but if you're willing to accept that in this version of the San Fernando Valley the only law is karate, then you might find this season utterly delightful. Add some career-best performances by some of the cast members, one incredible cartoon villain, and thrilling stunts, and you've got a season that is the best, around.

There’s nothing worse than a smart-alec film fan.
We’ve all done it, of course. Picked apart a cheesy blockbuster for its perceived flaws. Poked holes in some sloppy plot logic. Proposed another ending that would have made oh so much more sense.
The fact is, though, we’re often not as smart as we think we are. Often, films are simply more interested in telling a story than in bulletproofing themselves against pedants.
Sometimes, even widely circulated complaints are totally fatuous. People watch Titanic, for instance, and ask why Leonardo DiCaprio didn’t simply hop on the door alongside Kate Winslet at the end. It’s enough to make you want to scream: “That’s not how buoyancy works!”
But sometimes, plot holes are so egregious that you just can’t let them go. These are the ones that really stick in your mind, and leave you searching...

“It’s a good question because most people, I would say even my parents probably have no idea what I really do,” jokes Emmy-nominated supervising sound editor Patrick Hogan about the primary responsibilities of a sound editor and the differences between his team and the sound editing team on a show like “Cobra Kai.”
For our recent webchat Hogan declares, “It takes a lot of people to make a movie or show and even on a TV show like this,” he explains, adding that “you’re talking probably 150 people between production and post-production who work on the show. So, while the sound department is one small group of those people, it’s still many people working towards a common goal. There’s different positions and different responsibilities that different people have and in order to get the final product and reinforce the vision and the story that the producers want to tell.
