There is something inherently frustrating about the prospect of university life. As a college student, you can feel as if you’re stuck in limbo. You’re obviously no longer a child as sex, drugs and alcohol pervade your everyday world, yet you’re not really an adult — totally free of the burdens of the 9-to-5 rat race for at least a few more years. A feeling of unease can fall over you, as there’s always a kegger or a party to attend while lovers change partners more often than bed-sheets.
Everybody Wants Some!!, the long-awaited spiritual sequel to Richard Linklater‘s classic comedy Dazed & Confused is now out in theaters. In the film, a college freshman (Blake Jenner) arrives at school to find that his new baseball teammates are an out-of-control, alcohol-fueled army of irresponsible party-dudes.
To celebrate, we compiled ten of the finest college movies, all ranging wildly in style and tone.

The Cosmopolitans, Season 1, Episode 1: “Pilot”
Written by Whit Stillman
Directed by Whit Stillman
Released August 28, 2014 by Amazon
As Amazon continues to attempt to expand into original programming with their pilot season, they are promoting many of their pilots as the work of a distinct, well-known voice: “produced by Steven Soderbergh” or “created by Jay Chandrasekhar.” For The Cosmopolitans, that distinct voice is Whit Stillman, the writer-director-producer behind movies like Metropolitan and Damsels in Distress. It’s billed as a comedy about modern American ex-pats in Paris, a sort of twist on Hemingway’s classic A Moveable Feast. It’s got the same tone and slice-of-life feel as Stillman’s other works, or an HBO comedy like Girls or Looking.
If Girls attracted controversy for its lack of diversity, I can’t imagine what those critics are going to say about The Cosmopolitans. It’s all a very heteronormative, upper-class,...

Writer-director Whit Stillman ("Metropolitan") is taking his signature brand of young relationship comedy to Amazon Instant Video. “The Cosmopolitans” premieres on August 28, 2014. His latest ensemble includes Stillman vets Adam Brody ("Damsels in Distress") and Chloë Sevigny ("The Last Days of Disco"), plus Carrie MacLemore, Dree Hemingway, Freddy Åsblom, Jordan Rountree and Italian actor Adriano Giannini. How did Stillman wind up on Amazon? The filmmaker was an expat himself in Paris for nine years after "The Last Days of Disco," returning stateside to make "Damsels in Distress." “I had a lot of material set in Paris, and I would always think in terms of doing an independent film,” Stillman told Vf.com. “But you also have to make a living, and TV is what’s happening.” Much like "Barcelona" (my favorite of his films), this half-hour dramatic comedy pilot follows a...

“This is the most glamorous character I’ve ever played,” says Chloë Sevigny. “Finally! After 20-something years in the business, I’m a fashion journalist!” She and director Whit Stillman are in a West Village café talking about The Cosmopolitans, an Amazon Studios pilot debuting August 28 that might become a series. It fits right in with Stillman’s American-expat oeuvre. “It’s supposed to be open-ended so people want more episodes,” he says. “But I think it works fine—if this is the only thing we get to do, it will be nice. It’s sort of Metropolitan meets Barcelona in Paris.” He looks at Sevigny and adds, “With some Last Days of Disco thrown in.”“Sprinkled!” says Sevigny, who starred in that 1998 Stillman film. She’s wearing an oversize hunter-green Lacoste shirt tucked into a pleated tennis skirt along with a chunky gold watch. The Cosmopolitans—with Adam Brody,...

Big news today: We’re excited to announce Amazon Studios’ third pilot season, beginning August 28th and featuring three half hour comedies The Cosmopolitans, Really and Red Oaks, and two hour-long dramatic thrillers Hand of God and Hysteria. For one month, it will be up to you to watch, rate and comment – ultimately helping us decide which of them get the greenlight.
“There is something for everyone in this season,” says Roy Price, Director of Amazon Studios. The glamorous life of modern day expats in Paris. The hijinks of a summer job at a country club in 1980s New Jersey. The visions of a vigilante judge who appears to be channeling God. The complexities of marriage and friendship among a circle of friends in suburban Chicago. And the mysteries behind a psycho-physiological illness spreading through a small town in Texas.
You can help choose which of these stories should get “picked up” to become shows.

Now I'm not saying I'm not a fan of Adam Brody and Chloe Sevigny, but I don't like seeing their names as the leads of Whit Stillman's upcoming Amazon pilot "The Cosmopolitans". It's just casting that's too on-the-nose given the show's plot -- a group of young American expatriates in Paris who are searching for love and friendship in a foreign city. As much as I love the synopsis for a Stillman venture, with these two in the lead I can almost hear the whiny, "witty", back-and-forth banter now, increasingly grating with every punchline and sip of espresso. It's like when Larry David starred in Woody Allen's Whatever Works (my review), the writing was on point, but the actor delivering it just seemed a little too perfect for the part. It doesn't make it necessarily bad, but just not as good as it could have been. Both Brody and Sevigny are Stillman veterans,...

Amazon Studios hasn’t backed out from its commitment to creating original series’ for their Instant Video streaming service. Despite Netflix running away as the #1 streaming network, Amazon has announced that a third round of pilots are set to premiere later this year. They’re also going to keep their unique, quasi fan-sourced, approach alive. See, on Amazon, when they launch a pilot they allow the viewers a window of time to offer direct feedback about whether or not they’d like to see the series get a full season order.
They’ve found some success with recent shows like Alpha House and Betas, while notable flops like their series adaptation of Zombieland famously tanked during the network’s ambitious first attempt at creating something original.

Amazon has ordered two new pilots as part of their third season of original programming. The online giant has not yet debuted its second season of television series, in fact, it was only at the beginning of last week that Amazon announced what series they had picked up for season two, but clearly they have no plans of slowing down. First up with the two new pilots is "The Cosmopolitans," a half-hour dramatic comedy written, directed, and produced by Whit Stillman. Amazon writes that the series "follows a group of young American expatriates in Paris searching for love and friendship in a foreign city." The series stars Adam Brody, Chloe Sevigny, Carrie MacLemore, Dree Hemingway, Freddy Asblom, Shaun Evans, and Adriano Giannini. The second series, "Hand of God," is from Marc Forster, who directed last year's "World War Z" with Brad Pitt. Ron Perlman leads the cast as Judge Pernell Harris.

Dare we say it's like Chrismakkah?! Adam Brody (also now known as "hubby" to one Mrs. Leighton Meester) is coming back to television in a new Amazon dramedy pilot called The Cosmopolitans, about a group of young American expatriates in Paris searching for love and friendship. Chloe Sevigny, Carrie MacLemore and Dree Hemingway also star. Amazon announced the project today. (That pretty much puts the final nail in Sevigny's A&E-turned-Lifetime series Those Who Kill now, doesn't it?) This marks Brody's first series regular role since The O.C. bowed out in 2007. He most recently appeared on Fox's New Girl in a short run as Zooey Deschanel's ex-boyfriend. And of course, made...

Amazon Studios traditionally doesn’t announce its pilots until they’re fully cast and starting production. That is why it this morning confirmed the first two pilots from its third pilot season — half-hour dramatic comedy The Cosmopolitans, from Whit Stillman, and one-hour drama Hand Of God, from executive producers Marc Forster, Ben Watkins, Ron Perlman, Brian Wilkins and Jeff King. Both were greenlighted in January. The Cosmopolitans, about young American expatriates in Paris searching for love and friendship, stars Adam Brody and Chloë Sevigny. Hand Of God stars Ron Perlman as a hard-living powerful judge-turned vigilante and co-stars Dana Delany and Garret Dillahunt. Yet to be confirmed are three other Amazon pilots ordered this year, single-camera comedy Red Oaks, executive produced by Steven Soderbergh and executive produced and directed by David Gordon Green, Shaun Cassidy’s drama Hysteria and Samuel Baum’s dramedy Cocked. Here are detailed descriptions and credits...

Listing the best films of any year comes down to a matter of ordering -- Which film will I say was the absolute best? Listing the worst films of a particular year comes down to being honest with yourself -- Did I dislike it enough to call it one of the worst? However, when it comes to disappointments it's a different story. As a movie critic, maybe it's different for me. People tend to believe critics should walk into every movie without anticipation or excitement. Then, if that perception is held up, those that disagree with your opinion will either say "Yeah, but you didn't want to see it anyway!" or "You were always going to like that film." I do my best to let my opinion be known before seeing most films (running a blog of daily opinions helps). I do my best to avoid expectations (not watching trailers...

Last week, Joss Whedon returned to our screens with the DVD and Blu-ray release of The Cabin in the Woods, with which Drew Goddard (Cloverfield) made his directorial debut to brilliant critical acclaim, with a script he co-wrote with Whedon.
This week, Whedon returns once more to our home entertainment systems with the release of The Avengers, the year’s biggest film to date, and the third-highest-grossing film of all time. It’s been one we’ve been looking forward to ever since its release, and now it has arrived for us to bask in its awesomeness once more.
My picks of the week:
Joss Whedon’s The Avengers & Jay Oliva’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – Part 1.
And Bond 50 – the complete 22-film James Bond collection on Blu-ray.

Damsels In Distress
Stars: Greta Gerwig, Adam Brody, Analeigh Tipton, Carrie MacLemore, Megalyn Echikunwoke | Written and Directed by Whit Stillman
Damsels in Distress is an interesting film… I found at first that the style Whit Stillman’s approach to college life took quite a while to get used to. The girls of the Suicide Prevention Centre have quite a unique way of speaking and the world they live in is as crazy as their view of the world, or at least their world (the college life).
The story centres around the Seven Oaks college campus and a group of four girls that have taken it upon themselves to save their fellow students from themselves. They run the suicide prevention agency with the aim of finding students that may be in danger of succumbing to the harsh nature of their lives and trying to kill themselves. Propagated by doofi (the plural of doofus), the fraternities of Seven Oaks have de-evolved into a state of idiocracy; the situation is so grim that two male characters do not even know the names of the basic colors. Four girls at an Ivy League college attempt to teach their male peers some manners in Whit Stillman's urbane comedy
During the golden days of Hollywood's big studio system, directors such as Michael Curtiz and John Ford made three or four films a year, hoping that perhaps every couple of years a Stagecoach or a Casablanca would survive. Over the past 40-odd years, however, few film-makers have had the opportunity to develop such large bodies of work, and some have come to owe a good part of their mystique to the very paucity of their oeuvre.
The most obvious examples are Terrence Malick (70 next year) and Whit Stillman (60). Either through bad luck or excessive fastidiousness, they have respectively made five films in 40 years and four films in 20 years. The lengthy gaps in between have created expectations that are hard to fulfil, and admirers have been inclined to overestimate their achievement.

College can often be a trying and even traumatic time for some, but on hand to help the students of Seven Oaks, a stately-looking East Coast establishment, are a trio of prim and proper female students comprised of group leader Violet (Greta Gerwig), Rose (Megalyn Echikunwoke) and Heather (Carrie MacLemore). Managing the campus’ Suicide Prevention Center, they dispense sagely advice alongside offering refreshments, donuts and the opportunity to engage in a number of dancing techniques, designed to help alleviate the stress of student life.

Oh, the hoards and hoards of films which try valiantly to dissect and study teenage and young adulthood, those formative years when boys and girls learn so much of themselves while at school. There are dramas, horror films, the not so cleverly coined ‘dramedies’, and so on and so on. Most of us have lived through those unforgettable experiences, whether we reminisce them fondly or otherwise being an entirely different matter. Because many understand what they mean, there is an endless supply of material, be it adapted or original, to create more of such movies to the delight or annoyance of many. College, or university as it is recognized in Canada, is unfortunately not solely the domain of the bright and brilliant. Damsels In Distress
Stars: Greta Gerwig, Adam Brody, Analeigh Tipton, Carrie MacLemore, Megalyn Echikunwoke | Written and Directed by Whit Stillman
The opening film of the Bradford International Film festival, Damsels in Distress is an interesting film… I found at first that the style Whit Stillman’s approach to college life took quite a while to get used to.

Chicago – The sly satires of Whit Stillman have cultivated a fan base that appears to consist largely of his fellow peers. Manhattan-based filmmakers such as Wes Anderson, Noah Baumbach and Lena Dunham have cited his subdued comedies as an influence on their own similarly mannerist yet considerably more accessible work. For many moviegoers, Stillman’s brilliantly constructed, emotionally distant pictures are easy to admire but difficult to like.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The young, upwardly mobile “urban haute bourgeoisie” that populate his films serve as the target for Stillman’s observational, deeply affectionate humor. These characters may have big vocabularies and even bigger egos, but they are ultimately no less vulnerable and naive than their fellow peers in the lower social classes. I’ll never forget the hilarious scene in Stillman’s best film, 1998’s “The Last Days of Disco,” where a group of twentysomethings utilize their long-winded skills of analyses to pick...

Chicago – It takes a special kind of talent to appear wholly natural on-camera. Delivering dialogue with dramatic inflection is easy. But the ability to say scripted words as if they are emanating from your soul is profoundly tricky, especially when the words are written by an instantly recognizable stylist the likes of Woody Allen or Whit Stillman.
In 2012, audiences will have the opportunity to watch 28-year-old actress Greta Gerwig effortlessly inhabit the realms of various iconic filmmakers, as well as craft her own personal cinematic landscape. Gerwig’s revelatory work in Joe Swanberg’s Chicago-set indies “Hannah Takes the Stairs” and “Nights and Weekends” led to her breakout role in Noah Baumbach’s acclaimed comedy, “Greenberg.” Since then, Gerwig has become one of the most in-demand actresses of her generation, appearing in a variety of mainstream and art house pictures. The women-take-charge, narcissistic attitude has become increasingly prevalent in films, and writer-director Whit Stillman is the latest filmmaker to take part in the trend. His new comedy ‘Damsels in Distress,’ which is now playing in select theaters, isn’t afraid to present its female leads as smarter than their male counter-parts. The women are also classier than the men, in a school where male barbarism is still in effect, decades after coeducation was implemented on American college campuses. ‘Damsels in Distress’ follows a trio of girls-dynamic leader Violet (played by Greta Gerwig), principled Rose (portrayed by Megalyn Echikunwoke) and sexy Heather (played by Carrie MacLemore)-as they set out to revolutionize life [ Read More ]...

College is finally the time when people can voice their opinions and set out to accomplish whatever they put their minds to. This certainly rings true in writer-director Whit Stillman’s new comedy, ‘Damsels in Distress,’ in which females are finally taking control of college life, and are portrayed to be smarter than their male counterparts. The female characters in the film aren’t afraid to voice their thoughts and opinions, no matter how different they are than their friends’ and classmates’ ideas. ‘Damsels in Distress’ follows a trio of beautiful girls-dynamic leader Violet (played by Greta Gerwig), principled Rose (portrayed by Megalyn Echikunwoke) and sexy Heather (played by Carrie Maclemore)-who try [ Read More ]...

Here's Whit Stillman's schedule for the next few days: This evening, following a screening of Barcelona (1994), he and Chris Eigeman will be chatting at the Museum of the Moving Image. Tomorrow, he'll be at the Museum again to introduce his new film, Damsels in Distress, before heading over to BAMcinématek for a Q&A with Eigeman and Lena Dunham following a screening of The Last Days of Disco (1998). And then on Friday, following its premiere in Venice (see the roundup) and screening in Toronto (see Dan Sallitt's take), Damsels, Stillman's first feature in 14 years, finally opens in theaters.
Let's take this more or less chronologically, beginning with Colin Beckett, writing for Moving Image Source:
The three films that Whit Stillman made in the 1990s are neither the paradigmatic indie comedies they would appear in summary nor the traditionalist allegories his conservative fans have claimed. Though Stillman released these formally unambitious,...

It’s been fourteen years since Whit Stillman last explored the aspirants to high society in The Last Days of Disco. And, oh, his clever banter and twee worldview have been missed. In his fourth film, Damsels in Distress, the auteur behind Metropolitan and Barcelona takes on the plight of female co-eds at the fictional Seven Oaks, a former women’s college now overtaken by boorish frat boys. Greta Gerwig’s Violet leads a pack of pretentious do-gooders, including naïve transfer student Lily (Analeigh Tipton), snobby Rose (90210’s Megalyn Echikunwoke), and ditzy Heather (Carrie MacLemore), on a crusade to cure the college’s ills with tap dancing, a new dance craze, and soap. The film also marks a comeback of sorts for the also-missed Adam Brody, who plays a mysterious suitor to both Lily and Violet. Stillman spoke to Jada Yuan about his new movie, love of horse racing, and "hipster neighborhoods.

So “The Hunger Games” is still doing quite well, “Wrath of the Titans” is performing tolerably, but looking to ripple the waters this weekend is the behemoth of behemoth blockbuster movies, “Titanic (in 3D),” which (re)opened on Wednesday. It will again make James Cameron a boatload of money (Ha) so he can buy another submarine or whatever he uses his money for. Not a bad life, Cameron, not bad at all. Oh, and some other movies opened as well, in the event that you’re in the mood for something other than a large-budget epic with sick CGI. Thrillers, indie comedies, and dramedies set in Vatican City abound this week: sit back, relax, and “never let go, Jack.” (I'm so sorry for that. I just couldn’t resist.)
As summer creeps closer, so do the blockbusters, and “American Reunion,” fourth in the “American Pie” series, is here to help ring in the season.

Charlie: Do you know the film, "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoise?" When I first saw that title, I though, "Finally, someone is going to tell the truth about the bourgeoisie." What a disappointment. It would be hard to imagine a less fair or accurate portrait.
Cynthia: Well of course, Bunuel is a surrealist. Despising the bourgeoisie is part of their credo.
Nick: (disgusted) Where do they get off?
Charlie: The truth is the bourgeoisie does have a lot of charm.
Nick: Of course it does, the surrealists were just a bunch of social climbers.

Filmmaker Whit Stillman has made a mere 4 movies over the span of 23 years, his first three films grossing less than $15 million combined. His style of writing is abrasive for many, as is his sophiscated, sarcastic and self-deprecating sense of humor. That said, his third film, Last Days of Disco, offered a measure of hope and joy not present in his first two films, allowing for a slightly larger viewership during and after its theatrical run.
Thirteen years later, with Damsels in Distress, Stillman has grown softer still, as so many great filmmakers do (I’m looking at you Scorsese). Not that this is a bad thing. In fact, the versatile tones – both in drama and comedy – at play here mark a step forward in many ways for Stillman as both a writer and director.
The setting is Seven Oaks, a New England college that’s still suffering from a testerone-fused attitude towards college life.

Greta Gerwig stars in today's Damsels in Distress from director Whit Stillman. Adam Brody and Analeigh Tipton are among her cast mates in the comedy, which is based on a group of college girls who set out to improve the lives of their classmates through unconventional, and somewhat crazy, means. Greta and Whit told us about their own university days at a recent NYC press day. Leading ladies Carrie MacLemore and Megalyn Echikunwoke also weighed in on the topic, and shared a fun story about a particularly rowdy off-set party that bonded the largely female cast together.

A true Southern belle, Carrie MacLemore was born in Mississippi and raised in Alabama, but now resides mostly in New York, where she twice moved to try her hand at acting. In charming, demure tones, she admits she escaped her homeland without an affinity for country music or Nascar (“Which means I didn’t quite feel like I fit in when I was little”), and says she feels most Southern when she’s out of the South, and her accent helps render her a delightful curio. With but a few television credits to her name, MacLemore was hand-picked by director Whit Stillman for her film debut in his fourth feature film, “Damsels in Distress.” In [ Read More ]...

Within mere seconds, it’s obvious that writer-director-producer Whit Stillman’s first film in over a decade is going to have a spirit all of its own – after all, Damsels in Distress opens with a bright pink Sony Pictures Classic logo, a change-up from their classic blue. The message is clear – it’s the damsels’ world, we’re just living in it. Set at Seven Oaks College, a small liberal arts school somewhere on the East coast, Stillman’s film centers on the perpetually charming Greta Gerwig’s Violet and her three best pals as the foursome attempt to navigate the rough waters of friendship and romance in collegiate life. However, Stillman’s film twists around that bland and done-to-death premise with his most effervescent and light-hearted film yet, a fairy tale set in the real world and acted out by memorably off-beat and good-hearted characters. Violet’s best friends are named Heather and Rose (Carrie MacLemore and...

From the moment the Sony Pictures Classics logo pops up not in the usual blue -- but in cupcake frosting pink -- you know that Whit Stillman's first film in 13 years (!) is going to be something special. While word from Venice -- where the film closed the festival before heading to Tiff -- was good, the question to be answered was whether or not Stillman's style and cinematic persona would stand up in a filmmaking landscape that has changed immensely since "Last Days of Disco." Well, let there be no doubt: Stillman is just as enjoyable as when we last met him those many years ago, and "Damsels In Distress" finds the director with lots (and lots and lots) left to say.

"What the world needs to work properly is a large mass of normal people," transfer student Lily (Analeigh Tipton) concludes near the end of Damsels in Distress. With his fondness for preppily dressed, decorous men and women behaving discreetly, writer/director Whit Stillman also seems to believes this, but he's too in love with eccentrically posited aphorisms for their own sake to make a convincing case for bland societal assimilation. Here, his leading lady is Violet Wister (Greta Gerwig, mastering Stillman's unusual cadences), her name a self-created yoking of two different flowers. Violet's a college student who leads a small, Clueless clique of self-appointed social reformers dedicated to helping "young people crying out for guidance."
This sounds terribly condescending, and one of the nicest jokes is that Violet's literally out of her mind, a former Ocd kid prone to depression whose sharp comic timing is the result of mental imbalance.

Here's the first trailer to a new film written and directed by Whit Stillman called Damsels in Distress. The movie is a quirky kind of indie comedy that stars Greta Gerwig, Adam Brody, Analeigh Tipton, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Carrie MacLemore, Hugo Becker, Billy Magnussen, Ryan Metcalf, Jermaine Crawford, and Aubrey Plaza.
The movie looks like it could be entertaining, this is the first film Stillman has made in 14 years. The last movie he made was The Last Days of Disco back in 1998. Just to give you some perspective, this is the guy that inspired filmmakers such as Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach.

Anyone who remembers the 1990 indie comedy/drama Metropolitan can recall the dry humor and charm that began writer-director Whit Stillman's storied, yet not very prolific, career. Metropolitan was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Screenplay, and his following two movies — 1994's Barcelona and 1998's The Last Days of Disco — seemed to herald that Stillman was going to continue to be one of the more intelligent independent filmmakers for years to come. However, Stillman's latest movie, Damsels in Distress, is his first in 14 years.
Making its debut last September at the Venice Film Festival to good reviews, Damsels in Distress continues right where Stillman left off in The Last Days of Disco, yet again targeting the "urban haute bourgeoisie" (to borrow a phrase from Metropolitan). The movie follows three young women at an East Coast university (Greta Gerwig, Megalyn Echikunwoke and Carrie MacLemore) who take a transfer student (Analeigh Tipton...
