L.A.-based Dynamic Television has acquired worldwide rights to its first ever Norwegian drama series, “Dates in Real Life,” produced by “State of Happiness” Maipo Film for Norwegian pubcaster Nrk.
The upcoming seven-part half-hour dramedy, set to start filming next month, is the long-form scripted debut of writer-director Jakob Rørvik, a graduate from the U.K.’s National Film & Television School whose critically-acclaimed pic “Thomas vs. Tomas” received funding from the Sundance Screenwriters Lab.
“We’ve had a very good collaboration with Jakob Rørvik as a writer and director for many years, and we are so happy to now produce his first drama series,” said seasoned producer and Maipo Film CEO, Synnøve Hørsdal. “We’ve experienced a lot of interest in ‘Dates in Real Life,’ but to us, Dynamic Television is the perfect partner for this project. We thought this might be ready for last year, but the project was still in post production and aiming for a 2022 drop. From Norway, filmmaker Jakob Rørvik has been in the short film space for a decade plus now and he workshopped the feature as early as 2018 when he attended the Sundance Screenwriters Lab. Superposition features Arthur Berning, Filip Mathias Eide, Silje Storstein.

Much like Brit filmmaker Daniel Mulloy, Norwegian filmmaker Jakob Rørvik has “owned” the short film space for over a decade now landing accolades from all the prestigious film fests. We got to meet the filmmaker after his sejour at the 2018 Sundance Screenwriters Lab (was known as Thomas in 10 Dimensions then) – so Thomas in Superposition has its roots there. Production began around the month of February this year with players Arthur Berning, Filip Mathias Eide, Silje Storstein onboard and as production wrapped unleashed another short in Apocalypse Norway – it can be found here.

"What do you want to conquer?" This short film is almost too on-the-nose for the times we're living in. But it's an engaging and thought-provoking work and deserves to be seen anyway. Apocalypse Norway is a short film made by Norwegian filmmaker Jakob Rørvik about a group of teens on holiday, hiding out in a remote area of Norway in a huge house when an apocalyptic virus takes over the world. "As it reaches the heart of Europe, Oda realize they might be next." This stars Billie Barker, Kjetil Jore, Lotte Tomine Henningsen, Håkon Stubberud, Lea Meyer, & Lars Tafjord. The project is also a collaboration with electronica producer André Bratten. There's an intriguing mix of handheld, mobile phone cinematography and beautiful conventional shots. Rørvik explains the idea is inspired by a feeling in Norway of false security that comes from "belief in a never-ending growth of wealth and daily comforts.

He has already cracked the code sorta speak with the short film form (his shorts have preemed at Cannes and SXSW), and now current Oslo based filmmaker Jakob Rørvik appears ready to explore the feature length directorial debut with Thomas in 10 Dimensions which centers around the titular quantum physicist character who believes he is about to crack the code of the universe, but he can’t seem to untangle the mysteries of his own life, even as the people he loves most—his young son, ex-wife, and mother—all try to bring him back to earth. Robert G. Putka‘s Mouthful and Jared Varava‘s Tumbleweed! are two short films that have been selected to screen at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival, which will run in Austin, TX on March 9-17.
Mouthful is Putka’s second short film, a verbally raunchy comedy starring Eilis Cahill and Conor Casey as a young couple whose relationship becomes strained thanks to an overly frank discussion about their sexual histories. The film was recently reviewed on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film saying “one shouldn’t assume too much how the premise of a young man and woman discussing [male] anatomy will play out.”
Putka has also mounted an IndieGoGo campaign to help fund his filmmaking team’s trip to SXSW and for marketing material, such as posters, T-shirts, press kits and such. If you want to help out, please visit the Mouthful IndieGoGo page.
