British former footballer turned former manager Joey Barton has escalated his battles regarding female commentators in sport, after he was slammed by broadcaster ITV for making “vindictive” remarks about two of their pundits.
Barton, used to causing controversy with his outspoken attitude, launched this latest debacle with a social media post Friday regarding the comments made by pundits Eni Aluko and Lucy Ward on a televised match the night before.
Of Aluko, he wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “How is she even talking about men’s football. She can’t even kick a ball properly. Your coverage of the game Efc last night, took it to a new low. Eni Aluko and Lucy Ward, the Fred and Rose West of football commentary.”
Fred and Rose West were a married couple convicted of a dozen murders over a 20-year period, with both names remaining on the list of the UK’s most notorious criminals.

In all areas of life, there are people who just won’t go away, no matter how hard you try to block them out of your mind. The more you dislike them, the more they seem to appear.
Ocarina of Time has Navi. Game of Thrones has Joffrey. The footballing world has Joey Barton.
You’d think that with an ongoing career of implosions, people would learn to ignore him. Instead, quite the opposite has happened, with Barton frequently popping up on some of the biggest sporting stages.
He’s wormed his way onto Match of the Day, the occasional BBC Rugby broadcast, Channel 4’s NFL coverage and, away from sports, Question Time. All of this clearly proves that to make it as an ‘expert’ in every field, all you have to do is punch, kick and tweet philosophical insights about Nietzsche…

Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Steve Harper paid tribute to the near 51,000 crowd that showed up for his testimonial on Wednesday night, and also had words of praise for Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio.
The ex-Magpies stopper assembled a team of black and white legends for the match against an equally star-studded AC Milan line-up, which included the Black Cats’ boss.
With his every touch booed throughout the match, Di Canio took his revenge in the penalty shootout after the goalless draw, and scored from the spot to put his side in front.
And though he felt the full force of a challenge from Joey Barton in the second-half, the former Celtic and West Ham star took it on the chin and played his part in raising thousands for charity.
After the game, Harper said: “If I was a betting man I would have tried to get a bet on Joey doing that,...

The stars came out in force at St. James’ Park last night as almost 51,000 fans paid tribute to one of Newcastle United’s loyalist servants.
Some of the biggest celebrities in the Magpies’ history turned out for Steve Harper’s testimonial, and faced an AC Milan side packed with legends of their own.
Celebrated names such as Alan Shearer, Faustino Asprilla and David Ginola all donned the black and white shirt one more time to mark 20 years of service from the goalkeeper.
And the Italians weren’t short of household names themselves, with Paolo Maldini, Franco Baresi and Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio all featuring on an emotional night on Tyneside.
The game itself, which ended goalless, was settled by a penalty shootout that saw the Rossoneri’s old boys triumph. But the outcome was of little importance on a evening that saw all proceeds handed to local charities.

Joey Barton wants to play for “boyhood club” Everton and will take a huge pay-cut to make the move happen this summer, according to the Mirror.
The outspoken midfielder grew up in Merseyside supporting the Toffee’s and has now contacted their manager Roberto Martinez about a potential deal.
Barton is back at Qpr following a year in exile at French club Marseille, following his red card madness on the final day of the 2011/12 Premier League season.
Harry Redknapp is even considering playing him in Saturday’s Championship season opener against Sheffield Wednesday.
But the controversial star’s agent has made contact with Goodison Park manager Martinez enquiring about a potential move.
Barton had been hoping for a huge payoff at Qpr to make his move back to Marseille financially viable but those hopes are wavering, leaving the former Manchester City star considering a move to Everton instead.

I am a football fan but I have a confession. I am a traitor. I’ve switched allegiances not once, but twice. Any fan will tell you this crime is relatively rare and to have performed it twice is almost unheard of.
So why do I consider myself above the laws of football fandom? Well my story starts from a very early age. Being a year older than me, I worshipped my next-door neighbour like a God growing up. Everything he did I automatically did, and one of those things was support Manchester United. Now he could’ve supported Liverpool (my uncles were adamant I would be a Liverpool fan before finally giving up after the third replica shirt purchase), Arsenal or even Wolverhampton Wanderers and I would’ve done the same.
Luckily, for most of my childhood I supported the most successful team of all time including an extra...

You could argue that modern football is dominated by players making the most of weak challenges in order to gain an advantage. With footballers such as Luis Suarez and Gareth Bale building reputations as a divers, modern football is starting to get an unwanted reputation. Most incidents usually end with a player rolling around on the floor in an attempt to convince the referee that the tackle deserves punishing. With this being said many are genuine attempts to win the ball and are made worse by a player’s reaction.
The term ‘crunching tackle’ is usually followed by an overwhelming amount of pushing and shoving between players in an attempt to encourage the referee to brand a card. Some of the most dramatic acting has been played out on the biggest of stages, including Cristiano Ronaldo’s wink after getting Wayne Rooney sent off in the 2006 World Cup.

Long have referees been reviled figures. Whether we’re on the pitch or in the stands, the referee is always given some form of abuse or labelled as a certain manager’s play toy. The abuse referees get is something that I have seen from under 9′s playing football to watching Liverpool at Anfield… and I’m sure it happens at every club, at every level, on every weekend.
Rightly so the Respect Campaign was brought in. This campaign stressed the importance of the officials and attempted to deal with the issues in the game around abusing our officials. Let’s be frank, it is nothing short of abuse. Whether the referee has actually made the decision incorrectly or a linesmen flagged your star striker offside when he was 3 yards offside…. our natural reaction is to call the officials a f’ing this or a b’that. The Respect campaign wanted that to end,...

He has a lot to prove as a new member of the Paris Saint-Germain squad, and David Beckham came to play during his team’s match against Marseille last night (February 27).
The English soccer star made his full debut in the French Cup after playing the final 15 minutes of the previous game, helping Psg trounce Marseille 2-0.
And of course there was plenty of tension between Golden Balls and his rival Joey Barton, who hasn’t been shy about bashing him in the press as of late.
Paris Saint-Germain honcho Carlo Ancelotti praised Becks’ contribution to the win, noting,
"He made a very good performance. He made good passes as usual, he was well positioned on the pitch alongside Blaise Matuidi. He was very solid."...

Looking to boost the local economy, Victoria Beckham and her daughter Harper treated themselves to some retail therapy in Paris, France today (February 20).
The former Spice Girl and her little daughter hit up a slew of stores including Bonton, Merci, Isabelle Marant, Celine, and Natalys before stopping by a bakery for some goodies.
Meanwhile, Victoria’s husband David, who recently signed on to play for Paris St. Germain was on the receiving end of some condescending words from Marseille midfielder Joey Barton.
Barton stated, “As big a star as Beckham is off the pitch ... realistically he doesn't put the fear of God into you anymore like he used to when he played in the Premier League.
