Back in 2021, one of the films that truly left an impression in Fica Vesoul was “2000 Songs of Farida” by Uzbek director Yalkin Tuychiev. It seems that Tuychiev, apart from an excellent director, is also an equally good teacher, with “Sunday” by his student Shokir Kholikov proving the fact in the most eloquent fashion. The movie won the Asian New Talent prize for best film at the 25th Shanghai International Film Festival and a number of awards at this year's Fica.

Korean filmmaker Lee Jeong-hong’s A Wild Roomer and Shivamma, from India’s Jaishankar Aryar, were the winners of the New Currents Awards at the close of an encouragingly busy Busan International Film Festival.
A Wild Roomer, about a 30-something drifter, picked up multiple honors at the festival, also taking the Netpac Award, Critic b Award and Kbs Independent Film Award. Set in an Indian village, Shivamma is about an illiterate woman who falls for a pyramid selling scheme.
The Kim Jiseok Awards went to Scent Of Wind, from Iranian filmmaker Hadi Mohaghegh, which also played as Biff’s opening film, and Alteration from Uzbekistan’s Yalkin Tuychiev.
Other winners included Aamir Bashir’s The Winter Within, which took the Kb New Currents Audience Award, and Vinay Shukla’s documentary While We Watched, which was presented with the Busan Cinephile Award (see full list of winners below...

Korean film “A Wild Roomer” and India’s “Shivamma” have been announced as the joint winners of the New Currents competition, the prestige discovery section of the Busan International Film Festival.
“We were particularly sensitive to the lightness and subtlety of the director’s view of his characters. Through his innovative cinematography, he creates original circulations between the characters within a house, and builds a very contemporary universe,” the competition jury said of the Lee Jeon-hong-directed “A Wild Roomer.”
“We appreciated the originality and intensity with which the director was able to tell this very contemporary story. Here documentary and fiction meet in an organic and spirited way of making cinema. The generosity of the actors and the scenes create a closeness with this universal story that takes place in an Indian village,” the jury said of the Jaishankar Aryar-directed “Shivamma.”

The Busan International Film Festival will further honor its co-founder and former programmer Kim Jiseok, who died suddenly in 2017, by expanding the existing prize in his name into a fully-fledged competitive section.
Previously, the Kim Jiseok Award was given to one of ten films selected from the ‘A Window on Asian Cinema’ sidebar which introduces new films from significant Asian directors, defined as those who have each made more than three films.
“Starting this year, the Kim Jiseok Award nominees have been sorted into a section of their own, namely the ‘Jiseok’ section. Also, Korean films will be included in the ‘Jiseok’ section,” Busan organizers said. “This program section aims to both reinforce the spirit and determination of [Kim], who devoted himself to the growth and support of Asian films, and direct attention to the nominated works.”
The section comes with two cash prizes of 10,000 each. “Thus, the Jiseok section is...

The concept of what is reality and how cinema can present it, is one that has been “tormenting” arthouse filmmakers forever. Yalkin Tuychiev presents his take on the topic, trying to approach reality through intense beauty.
“2000 Songs for Farida” screened at Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinemas
The story takes place in a remote location in Central Asia, during the civil war following the 1917 Russian Revolution, that ended with the Bolsheviks taking over from the khans and emirs that dominated before. In this setting, Kamil lives with his three wives, who follow an exhausting everyday routine that allows them to survive in a rather harsh setting. As Kamil has not managed to have a child with Robibar, the most beautiful among the three, he brings in yet a fourth wife, the titular Farida, and tension soon mounts.
Tuychiev creates a very intriguing setting, lingering between the dystopia and the Far West,...

It can take a moment to adjust to the quiet, grave rhythms of the impossibly gorgeous “2000 Songs of Farida,” where the imagemaking is so resplendent as to be disorienting, given how accustomed we are to a cinema in which the pictures primarily serve the storytelling. But Yalkin Tuychiev’s film, which is Uzebkistan’s entry for the international Oscar, is hardly lacking in story: This historical drama is simply told with such grace that its opening scenes feel like snatches of a melody that needs to reach its refrain before we can recognize it as a song — one that harmonizes between the caged bird longing to be free, and the freed bird longing for the comfort and safety of her cage.
The vast backdrop, flattered by the blanched grandeur of Dp Bakhodir Yuldashev’s incredible imagery, is the wilderness where scrubby steppes extend out from the foothills of arid mountains in rural Uzbekistan.
