“Dune” has started rolling out overseas, collecting a strong $36.8 million in its international debut over the weekend. While the first movie in Denis Villeneuve’s planned two-part saga doesn’t arrive in the U.S. until late October, his crafts team has started making the rounds in support of what is surely one of the year’s big below-the-line Oscar contenders. Costume designers Jacqueline West and Bob Morgan recently spoke to Variety, which reports the duo created “1,000 or so looks” to bring the film’s different planetary worlds to life.
As reported by Variety: “Jacqueline West and Bob Morgan teamed up to create the 1,000 or so looks needed for the three main worlds of the movie: Arrakis, Caladan, and Giedi Prime. ‘For research, I looked at David Lean films — “Dr. Zhivago,” “Lawrence of Arabia” — [as well as] “Fahrenheit 451,”‘ says West. She says she also referenced Greek and Roman mythology because she thought...

The costumes in Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” tell a rich story on their own.
Jacqueline West and Bob Morgan teamed up to create the 1,000 or so looks needed for the three main worlds of the movie: Arrakis, Caladan and Giedi Prime. “For research, I looked at David Lean films — ‘Dr. Zhivago,’ ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ — [as well as] ‘Fahrenheit 451,’” says West. She says she also referenced Greek and Roman mythology because she thought there was a connection there with House Atreides and House Harkonnen. “It all seemed like a kind of a real Greek and Roman tragedy on one level,” West says. Other wide-ranging inspirations included art by Goya, Giotto and Caravaggio; the clothes of desert people such as Bedouins and Tuaregs; tarot cards; the classic fashion of Balenciaga; and the colors of the rocks and sand in Jordan, where a chunk of the action was filmed.

Sony Pictures has released a set of new photos from their fantastic looking new movie The Amazing Spider-Man 2. They feature Peter and Gwen looking very happy with each other. Then there's Norman Osborn above who looks like he's possessed by some kind of demon like in The Exorcist.
I've also included a few pieces of Electro concept art by illustration Keith Christensen. One of the designs looks like it comes right out of the world of Tron. I ultimately really like what the final design for the villain ended up being. The designs in the film look fantastic, I love everything I've seen, and I just hope they were able to pull together a great story and script.

Keith Christensen, is one of the most respected artists working in the entertainment field today. He's contributed his incredibly imaginative costume illustrations on plenty of big-budget comic book movies, such as X-Men: Days of Future Past, Man of Steel, and is currently working on Josh Trank's upcoming Fantastic Four. Below, are four exclusive piece of concept art for Jamie Foxx's Electro in Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Concept Art by Keith Christensen We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead. It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone...

How would you describe your artistic style? Keith Christensen: That's tough. By necessity, it varies from job to job, and even piece to piece. Since most of the 2D work I do is as much about problem solving and translation into 3D (both digital and tangible) as it is about imagery, I have to use the most efficient method of satisfying those needs. Very little concept art can simultaneously invoke narrative and atmosphere, And function as a blueprint for the build. I try not to concern myself with a personal style. It'll show up in some form whether I like it or not, so I try not to force it. Man Of Steel Concept Art A lot of your Man of Steel designs for the Kryptonian characters incorporated some 16th Century aesthetics and decorative motifs of twentieth century architect, Louis Sullivan. What type of look were the costume designers...

Film Sketchr posted a new Man of Steel article today, that includes an interview and artwork from conceptual artist, Keith Christensen. Keith illustrated costumes for Jor-El, General Zod, Faora,, the Sapphire Guards, and Kyptonian soldiers. You can view some of his art below, but to see all of his pieces, and the full interview click here. Here is an excerpt. Keith Christensen: The hardest part was working out the Kryptonian 'look'? The costume designer [Michael Wilkinson] kept pushing for something strange and different, while referencing 16th century armor. He wanted a future/past blend that felt both alien and historical. You needed to feel like there was a culture behind the decadence… a real sense of history. After hearing that Art Nouveau was influencing the art dept., I introduced the costume designer to the decorative motifs of Louis Sullivan, an early twentieth century architect that was a contemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright.
