Johnny Depp has just delivered an unexpected performance in the opening trailer for the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff) currently underway in the Czech Republic.
In the trailer, Depp is seen walking outdoors, carrying a guitar case. He then enters the lobby of a hotel, struggling to get his guitar case through the door, where he meets a woman who’s there to interview him.
As they speak, she mentions that he had attended the Kviff, but came home empty-handed.

“Literally everyone who goes gets an award. How come you didn’t?” she asks.
“Did I not?” Depp responds, to which his interviewer confirms, “I don’t think you did.”
After an awkward pause, Depp reaches into his guitar case and retrieves a Kviff trophy, bearing a piece of tape covering the nameplate, upon which his name has been handwritten.

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival premiered a new trailer featuring Johnny Depp at the opening ceremony of its 2023 festival, which took place on Friday evening in the spa town outside Prague in the Czech Republic.
The trailer, along with other Kviff trailers, can be viewed in full here.
One of the most distinctive features of the Karlovy Vary festival is its trailers, which often feature Kviff honorees putting a playful spin on the festival’s top award, the Crystal Globe. Depp has not yet been recognized with such an award — a fact that he pokes fun at in the nearly three-minute clip when an interviewer asks the actor, “Literally everyone who goes gets an award, but you didn’t.”
Depp stares. “I didn’t?” he says.

Johnny Depp returned to the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on Friday, kind of — onscreen, not in person.
The opening ceremony of the 57th edition of Central Europe’s biggest cinema celebration in the Czech spa town on Friday featured the much-anticipated premiere of its annual trailer starring the Pirates of the Caribbean actor.
It was directed by film and advertising director Ivan Zachariáš and is set in the Hotel Gellért, an art nouveau hotel in Budapest. With Depp working in Europe at the time of production, a stopover in Hungary fit into his work schedule, the fest noted. “Right at the start of the shoot he told me that he would prefer to improvise,” said Zachariáš. “I was initially a bit taken aback, but it turned out to be a great idea, since Johnny ended up putting even more of his own personality into the trailer.”
Concluded the director: “We had great fun.

At this time last year, the organizers of the Karlovy Vary international film festival — the biggest cinema event in the Czech Republic and the premium A-list festival for all of Eastern Europe — were scrambling. The Russian invasion of Ukraine, just a few months earlier, had disputed the entire region. Filmmakers from Prague to Tallinn were rushing to show their support for the Ukrainian people and their battered industry. When the Odesa International Film Festival (Oiff), scheduled for July 2022, had to be canceled, festivals near Ukraine joined forces to show cross-border solidarity. Poland’s Warsaw Film Festival stepped up to host Odesa’s competition program. The PriFest in Kosovo opened up its schedule to screen full-length and short films by Ukrainian debutant directors.

While Ukrainian filmmakers have called out international festivals such as Cannes and Karlovy Vary for the inclusion of Russian titles in their lineups, Liev Schreiber, who has Ukrainian roots stemming from his maternal grandfather, admits he “struggles” with the idea of boycotting art of any kind.
“I struggle with the idea of boycotting any kind of art or expression,” Schreiber told journalists at a press conference at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on Saturday. “Having said that, the reason that I believe, and everyone always asked me why I think Ukraine is going to win, is because I believe that they are going to come out of this eventually on the right side of history. As the 56th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff) is about to kick off on Friday, there will be plenty to discuss at this year’s event in the picturesque Czech spa town. The prominent Central European festival, which is returning to its usual early July slot after last year’s edition was delayed to August because of the pandemic, will see 33 films from five continents screen across its three sections – the Crystal Globe Competition, the Special Screenings section and its new competition, Proxima, which replaces the former East of the West section.
This year’s selections will be bookended by Friday’s opening night film Superheroes, from Italian director Paolo Genovese, and George Miller’s Cannes title Three Thousand Years Of Longing, which will close the festival on July 9. The lineup includes the world premiere of Jake Paltrow’s Israel and Ukraine-shot feature June Zero, about...

In a region of the world — central and eastern Europe — that hasn’t had much to celebrate recently, the news that the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is returning in full force this year (the 56th Kviff runs July 1-9) is truly a reason to party.

In a typical year, fans of Eastern European cinema, after enjoying the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in early July, would hop on a two-hour flight to Odesa, Ukraine for the Odesa International Film Festival, the No. 1 annual event for Ukrainian cinema.
2022, of course, is a far from typical. Spain’s Association of Female Filmmakers and Audiovisual Media is speaking out against this week’s news that Johnny Depp will be awarded the Donostia prize at the 69th San Sebastian Film Festival next month. The festival announced Depp will be given the event’s lifetime achievement prize Wednesday, Sept. 22, referring to the actor as “one of contemporary cinema’s most talented and versatile actors.”
Cristina Andreu, the president of Spain’s Association of Female Filmmakers and Audiovisual Media, told the Associated Press (via The Guardian) that the group of women directors was “very surprised” over the decision to give Depp the Donostia prize. Depp has been accused of emotional and physical abuse by Amber Heard. Warner Bros. had Depp exit the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise last year after he lost a libel case to The Sun, which referred to Depp as a “wife beater” in an article about Depp and Heard.

This year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Aug 20 -28) will honor actors Johnny Depp and Michael Caine, and director Jan Sverak.
Depp, who is also set to be feted at San Sebastian this year, is set to attend the Czech festival which “will recognize and pay tribute to the acclaimed actor’s extensive career and lasting legacy on the film industry globally”.
“We’re incredibly honored to welcome to the Festival an icon of the contemporary cinema,” said Kviff’s executive director Krystof Mucha and the Festival’s artistic director Karel Och. “We’ve admired Mr. Depp for such a long time and are thrilled to bestow this honor on him.”
The timing is interesting given that Depp has been caught up in an ongoing and very messy legal feud with former wife Amber Heard. The dispute and its lurid details have seen the star dropped from at least one major studio project.

A year ago, the film industry was packing their Canada Goose and Bludstones for Sundance, the opening salvo for another frantic 2020. Park City proceeded as usual, with the occasional news about a virus across the world, and we all know what happened next.
The Berlin festival barely squeaked by before shutdowns swept Europe, and after that it was all about cancellations — SXSW, Tribeca, Cannes, Telluride and nearly everything in between. New York and Toronto cobbled together a combination of online and drive-in events. The Venice Film Festival was one of the few to host a physical edition, with masks de rigueur for the red carpet. Meanwhile, many distributors thought “cobbled” was too close to “hobbled” and held back their movies in hopes that more conventional circumstances would soon prevail.
So what happens now? By any metric, the pandemic is far from over and the disruption continues. Sundance goes virtual for seven days in late January,...

Radoslaw Śmigulski(left), general director of the Polish Film Institute, hosted Friday’s Polish Party at Plage du Goéland in Cannes, where the guests included Marche du Film director Jérôme Paillard.
“It was a pleasure to host great filmmakers and film industry representatives at the Polish Party in Cannes, which was one of the many events promoting the talents, locations and the funding possibilities in Poland, including the 30% cash rebate,” said the Pfi’s Smigulski.
Among those in attendance were Berlinale artistic director Carlo Chatrian, Locarno Film Festival programming head Mark Peranson, and Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival program coordinator Anna Purkrabkova, programmer Martin Horyna, and programmer Lenka Tyrpakova.
“There is a lot of interest in Polish cinema right now,” said producer Klaudia Smieja of Madants, gesturing around the packed terrace where guests huddled, danced and downed Polish vodka to stay warm on a cold, soggy night.

As the world witnessed earlier this year in Cannes, film festivals — as with every other institution in the #MeToo era — are under the microscope. Observers and activists alike now carefully scrutinize the number of films made by women, the composition of juries, and any fest statement on sexual harassment policies.
How will the Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival, running June 29-July 7 this year, deal with these issues and others in the wake of May’s Cannes protests and changes, which included the banning of red-carpet selfies and embargoes on press screenings? Executive director Krystof Mucha and artistic director Karel Och talked with Variety about their strategies.
Regarding sexual harassment, Mucha says he does not see the need for a reporting hotline or other protections of the kind set up this year by other fests, including Cannes.
“It needs to be said that Kviff is an event of which the more...

Festival also to host Frank Daniel tribute with workshop and screening.
Amazon Studios’ in-demand head of motion picture production Ted Hope (21 Grams) will deliver a talk at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (July 1 – 9) in which he will discuss his perspective on the future of film.
Karlovy Vary executive director Krystof Mucha said: “Ted has already been to the festival twice – once as a member of the Main Jury and once as a producer of a competition film The Collaborator. When we met at Sundance this year, we agreed it would be wonderful to have him at Karlovy Vary as Amazon Studios’ chief producer so that this innovative project can be introduced in the Czech Republic.
“However, Ted would also like to use the unique opportunity to meet dozens of European distributors and individually discuss a new Amazon strategy that keeps them in the game.”

Marrakech International Film Festival
MARRAKECH, Morocco -- Grandhotel is a quirky tale about a hotel in the Czech Republic where one does not see the guests at all but rather its staff. An apt movie that is sure to endear itself to a discerning festival crowd, but too experimental for others, Grandhotel is set in the northern city of Liberec and among the nearby Jizerske mountains.
Jaroslav Rudis, Pavel Jech's script focuses primarily on the hotel's handyman, Fleischman (Marek Taclik), who is also an amateur meteorologist desperate to get close to the skies. He is sewing a hot air balloon to take him up, up and away, but if he does not vanish into the clouds, it because the chambermaid, Ilja (Klara Issova), loves him and drags him down to terra firma. But she has a problem in her jealous boyfriend and arrogant waiter, Patka (Jaroslav Plesl).
Though Fleischman believes that a person belongs to the place he is born, he dreams of running away from European boredom. Among his co-workers are the sex-starved receptionist Jegr (Jaromir Dulava), clumsy hotel help Zuzana (Dita Zabranska) and bitter German World War II veteran Franz (Ladislav Mrkvicka). It is only when beautiful Ilja comes into Fleischman's life that things begin to brighten.
Director David Ondricek spins a yarn that is great to look at but lacks emotional punch. Often the characters appear distant from each other, and the chemistry between Fleischman and Ilja is not hot enough. Taclik is fussy, if that can be called somewhat appealing. Issova's eyes are mesmeric, even though she does not ooze enough sex, leaving one wondering what exactly caught Fleischman's eye. Richard Rericha's photography is wonderful, adding a warm glow to the images and the striking cloud movements. The film's sound design by Pavel Rejholec and music by Jan P. Muchow won the country's Oscar equivalent, the Czech Lion.
